Feasting on meat, my favorite part of Facemeet. I mean Facelift. It's never too early to think about the next Facelift, is it?
Hope to see you there, everyone!

Looking forward to seeing everyone in September, and of course helping out.

The YCA will start taking camping requests on May 1st: http://www.yosemiteclimbing.org/facelift-2016/

Moose, mouse, whatever - four legs good, two legs good too.

Hopefully by autumn the situation regarding place names will be sorted out, given that many of us will keep on using the historical ones out of forgetfulness, obstinacy, or both.

Apparently so. I did not see any change noted on that location. I should follow up to make sure my reservation carried over.

Not sure if we will be attending this year. To be honest, I hope we won't be, simply because we are already 6 months behind on our plans to move to Europe, and things need to start solidifying or I am going to have to take a different path.

If we are around we will be there of course, although my health will probably prohibit me from doing much. Mister E, will miss you at the gathering!

We will see how it goes.

Delhi Dog, we were discussing whether human activity is responsible for the yellowness of the pines in camp.

TT is an expert witness concerning large woody objects.

Turns out it was simply a misspelling on the part of the NPS sign shop.

It's supposed to be Mellow Pine Group CG, not Yellow Pine Group CG.
Always the pedantic one, I am.

DNC apparently trademarked "Facelift", so the event shall now be known as "Tummy Tuck".
I'll be there, ready to scour the woods and trails for improper evidence of human passage.

Yosemite Facelift 2016

The Yosemite Facelift starts with an evening program 9/20/2016 and ends at midnight on 9/25/2016.

We will start taking camping requests May 1.

Please include names of people in your party, what nights needed, and campground choices in order of preference. Tuolumne, Yellow Pines, Camp 4 and Upper Pines will be available.

I'm very sorry to report the recent passing of Michelle (Missy) Carter, who was a real friend of the climbing community. She died in a motor vehicle accident on April 5th, near Mariposa. I don't know if Missy did much climbing, but she was certainly an active presence in Yosemite. She had the distinction of having been born and raised in the Valley, worked for the National Park Service for 23 years, and was a ranger supervisor.

http://california.obituaries.funeral.com/2016/04/08/melissa-anne-carter/

Many of you may recognize Missy from your trips to the Valley, and the Facelift. She was a staunch supporter of the FaceLift, and helped in a myriad of ways, including camping. Despite what must have been a challenging job, Missy was always cheerful and organized.

This has been a severe blow to the tightly-knit communities of Yosemite Valley and El Portal, and the NPS. My condolences to Missy's family and numerous friends.

There will be a memorial for Missy in El Portal on Saturday, April 16th.

Missy was the sort of person who might have received this scholarship, as she was born in Yosemite Valley, graduated from Mariposa High School, and was valedictorian there.

Boo Dawg, From what I gather the email is Yosemitefacelift@gmail.com. You need to give them the names of everyone in your party and the nights needed. Face Lift this year begins 9/20 and ends midnight 9/25. Choices for camping are Tuolumne Meadows, C-4, Upper Pines and Yellow Pines. They ask you to give them in order of preference.

Looking forward to seeing you and Lisa, Kali, Nancy, Audrey, Guido and everyone.

I'd like to email you re: a book on climbing in Tuolumne. Is that cool? Lynnie

Agent FatTrad, a loyal supporter of the FaceLift, advises that once again there will be a Meatfest at Yellow Pine on Saturday evening, September 24th. Details TBA.

Jeff considered having it as a fundraiser for the Cthulhu/Trump campaign, or perhaps for Sauron/Cruz, but in the end agreed that it will be by donation to the YCA. Neither mouses nor mooses nor meeces will be barbecued, but many other good things will be there to be eaten and drunk. Everyone welcome, and a good time will be had by all. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was some music, too.

For the clamouring hordes who have sent Facelift camping requests to http://www.yosemiteclimbing.org/facelift-2016/, just a note. The YCA gets a lot of camping requests for the Facelift, and has several hundred campers/night to manage.

1. Please make your request as clear and simple as possible. Names, dates, location, etc.
2. Please live up to what you've requested, and if your plans change, let the YCA know as soon as possible. Camping is at a premium in Yosemite in late September, particularly Camp 4.
3. Don't expect confirmation until July or later. (TBA)

Also, the Yosemite Climbing Association can always use donations - cash, that is. The Facelift, and its work on the museum and other things, involve significant expense, and every bit helps. Indeed, in the past Ken has sometimes had to pay significant expenses pre-Facelift, hoping that the YCA will have enough afterwards to pay him back. So donations would be a timely thing. For US residents, you get a donation receipt, so this would be a good thing to invest some of your tax refund in.

I am very excited to say that CG and I will be able to attend and participate in the Facelift this year!! Very psyched as the last Facelift we made it to was 2008... I just sent in a request for camping in Yellow Pines for the full duration. Also, by September I'll be just up and running with climbing again after 9 months on the bench due to back to back shoulder surgeries, so hopefully I/we can connect with some folks for some moderate climbing while there :-) :-) Cheers!

Bump.

Decisions, decisions. It just hit that I have a 50th class reunion on the 24th of September.

It's a no-brainer, though.

I still haven't sent in the $40 they are asking for attending.

And I WON'T BE IN TOWN ANYWAY because It's the same night as the MEATFEST!

Can't live in the past, can we?

I'd rather be singin' n' feedin' my face on REAL GOOD EATS (with Negra Modelo in hand) than trying to schmooz with people who look older than me, spend more freely on booze than me, and will wake up in the morning feeling old.

Dear All,

I hesitate to write this...but as of today, camping is full. Requests sent in the last 14 days or so should have received an email about the waitlist today. The automatic response now asks whether the requester is interested in being placed on the waitlist at this time and (gulp) I've added my phone number.

We're still planning to send out confirmations in the next month or so.

If traffic control warnings were placed at the park entrances on 120 and 140 we could do a lot of work on those roads. Sites at campgrounds further out might be available and if NPS busses could be pressed into service people could be transported to the festivities each night in the Valley. Both auditoriums would have to be available, obviously.

But no matter what is done......there are limits.

Yosemite National Park unveils 400-acre expansion

Ackerson Meadow features wetlands and rolling hills that are home to endangered wildlife, park officials quoted by AP news agency said.
The land, on Yosemite's western boundary, was bought for the park by conservation group the Trust for Public Land for $2.3m (£1.7m).
Yosemite National Park covers about 1,200 sq miles of mountainous scenery.
It attracts millions of visitors every year and celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2015.

MOOP 1. ( noun)
An acronym for Matter Out Of Place, meaning any thing or impact not native to the immediate environment, especially as it applies to the citizens of Black Rock City and the greater Burning Man community in regards to the founding principle of Leave No Trace.

Here is info about group projects:

Hello Yosemite Facelift Participants!

The Facelift team is SO excited that the big event is just around the corner - and we hope you are too! There is nothing quite like this special week of working hard and having fun in Yosemite.

On the note of working hard....we want to give you a heads up several group projects happening throughout the week that we are recruiting for. Sign up is the same as usual at the registration booth, but if you want to sign up ahead of time for one of these awesome group projects there will be an opportunity to do so starting 8 am Wednesday at the registration booth in front of the Valley visitor center (and we would love it if you would!).

The projects are as follows:

WEDNESDAY:
Conifer Removal, meet on the mall at 8:30 am. Project Description: Removing small conifer trees around black oak trees, in scenic vista areas, and to help prep for prescribed fire. Easy to Moderate difficulty. 20 volunteer maximum. All ages welcome!

Seeding and Invasive Removal, meet on the mall at 8:30 am Project Description: Volunteers will be hand-pulling invasive plants from the medians of the West of Lodge Parking area. Then they'll be spreading seed and duffing the areas. Easy to moderate difficulty. 6 volunteer maximum.

THURSDAY:
Seed Collection, meet on the mall at 8:30 am Project Description: The Revegetation crew will be collecting seed all around Yosemite Valley. Volunteers will learn how to identify native plants and collect their valuable seeds for future restoration projects. Easy to moderate difficulty. Adults only, detail oriented people preferred.10 volunteer maximum.

Social Trail Eradication meet on the mall at 8:30 Project Description: Using heavy duty shovels to decompact unwanted social trails in Bridalveil meadow removing ruts that fragment habitat and disrupt meadow hydrology. Moderate to Strenuous difficulty. 15 volunteer maximum. Adults and older youth recommended.

-Crane Flat Clean-Up 10 am (meet at Crane Flat Gas Station) Project Description: Guided litter cleanup in Tuolumne Grove area and Crane Flat area. Volunteers must transport themselves to the Crane Flat Gas Station to meet the project leader. Easy to moderate difficulty. 20 volunteer maximum.

FRIDAY:

Tell your Facelift friends, and we're looking forward to seeing you in a few short days!

Sincerely,

DAMN, senorita! ^^^^
But work pays in so many ways.

Hope you do make the Meatfest, HJ.

I have beans covered, mostly, but need help.

I don't have a large pot, unless Mr. Flip Flop decides to bring the one I left in his truck at Shuteye last year (plus the glass lid).

I don't have a camp stove, either, but someone can probably provide one to simmer the offering.

They will be scratch beans, so they'll soak 24 hours prior to cooking.

There will need to be some fresh tomatoes, and Romas are the ones, not the fancy salad types. Boil them and let them cool to where the skin sloughs off easily.

I plan on adding in two small cans of salsa de tomate con jalapenos and three small cans of salsa de tomate and that's all--no beer in my beans, Maldaly, thanks.

Anyway, I saw GLee off just now. He spent the night here and we had some fun at Marie's Homemade Enchiladas and stopped in to watch the Pack and the Vikes at the Publick House.

I'm leaving in the morning and will get to the Village about 9 a.m.

See ya all when I see ya!

Susan....I wish I would have been in my car. I was in the truck...

I have a 4Runner which some refer to as a "truck" but it drives a lot better than our Tacoma.
"Panache" is pushing it a little, well a lot, but certainly a lot better than the gargantuan trailers and trucks. I'm still at a loss why people need to bring along their mega on wheels estate.

I walked up to some guy in the cafeteria and said "Grandpa". When he turned full face I, well, er, saw my mistake. Profile, though, spot on. Your evil, liberal, democratic twin ;). He was nice about it.

Wonder if Ken or the YCA has records of each years total trash collected?

Definitely worthwhile to spend the entire week at the registration tents, seeing the in and outs of Facelift management and dealing with the tourists, repeat pickers, the locals, etc.

He spent lots and lots of effort at the registration area,

jstan, I made that phone call the moment I came home.

My driver hadn't reported it found when he finished his run out to the north of town, but this only means he found it and didn't report it which is unlikely; or he didn't bother to look back there; or it may have slipped to the floor under a seat.

The person who took the particulars has my phone number and said that the cleaning crews work on the buses each evening and that they have a great deal to lose by not reporting lost items.

It's interesting that the last shot I made was a silhouette of you looking out the window of the bus at the top of the grade descending into Catheys Valley.

Thanks for the encouragement, and let me say that it was a pleasure to get to know you a bit better.

Here is a commute I'd love to have to make every day.I thoreauly enjoyed this time to myself, thanks to the One All Around Us.

It's great to be back and healthier than last year. Let's roll up our sleeves, shall we?

Looks like Mouse got his camera back!

On the way back the west shoulder of Rt 5 north of Pyramid Lake is loaded with trash for miles. Very tempting. No mattresses or sofas though. Ah well. Nothing is perfect.

Couple of photos Cathy got.

Big Shout-out to *Mr Ken Yager, thank you for putting together another fine, fun, worthwhile event.. I love attending the Facelift!

My three day trash total was only 15 pounds, but that's pretty good for mostly micro bits. I only found two diapers and way too many cigarette butts & nasty toilet paper wads to count.

Cold nights, cold mornings, coffee and good friends.. Great food at the Meatfest..Thanks Jeff!!

Mouse, Good beans!..Miss Lynda, the Salmon Queen.. My Sister~ Miss Lynne..I want your Chicken tortilla soup recipe and Miss Erin, please can i have your Curry lentil soup recipe, Please make it again next year!... Also, The park service woman who made the vegan cupcakes..double yum..Miss Susan's brownies, chocolate yum...

It was fun to finally meet the Mysterious~ Ms.Debby...she showed up one night and disappeared the next morning.....Did i dream meeting her?

Someone put a klean Kanteen in my bear box...Is anyone missing theirs?
Really Great hanging with all you guys and gals! .. (-;
Able Gable, next year>> No crutches..ok.
Saludos..

ps..Thanks H... and Allison...Dean, thanks for bringing the beer!
pss. My clothes smell smokey and the tee-shirts run too small, It's time to hire Guido for tee-shirts. psss> This years print of Josh Helling's art is great!

MAN, THAT CURRY WAS GOOD!:):)

Moose, I never really did know bout you, but I surely don't know now! Ha!

i think Eric Gable might be getting more done now on crutches than he did without! What a great job he did on precureing a spot and stoking every 9-90 year old who walked through there! and I heard breezes that the New Yosemite Guide is close to completion!!!!!

FACELIFT*

OMG! AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ive already planned for next year.. But history is still happen'in now! Just came from Doug Robertson's rip-roar'in, but humble view of the valley. And I'll never forget walkin thru the real Camp4 with Glen Denny.. and i can't stop thinkin bout Beth Rodden's supreme honesty.

Truely, i just saw way to many people working way hard to make this "thing", Yosemite Facelift proceed 110% i wouldn't know who to Thank first..

Thanks Everyone!

PS, Every climber should be investing into this!! and I'd say all that have are benefitting largely!

It is nice to connect faces with the people of the taco. One of these years i will make it to a facelift. i swore i would do it before i made 60, i missed that by a week.

Good to see Don Reid.

Thanks for posting pictures. i guess Ed H. no longer does the black and white "morning before coffee photographs", they are some of my favorites from years past.

after a disastrous encounter in a commercial "rental" photolab I haven't yet figured out how to develop B&W film at my home... until I do I'll probably wait to resume my portraiture in B&W. This year I was just simplifying life at the Facelift, bringing only my point-and-shoot and keeping the subjects simple.

Good morning! Another Facelift successfully in our repertoire! :-) Thanks again to everyone. Facelift always warms my heart because it's a great example of spontaneous organization for a good cause!

If you didn't get a chance to see it, Ken, Timmy, Mike Gauthier, and Jeff Johnson "went live" on Sunday morning. Some good tidbits in there, including the fact that over 13 years, we've picked up over one million pounds of trash! Patagonia Live with Ken from Valley Floor

I'm planning to work on camping assignments next year, but with help from Linda. We'll work on getting communication about requests out early. :-)

And, some photos!

If you all are around Santa Rosa next Tuesday, come by Round Table to the RIM Club event! I'll be showing some photos of painting and from climbing in Patagonia and would love to see you again!

Until next time,
Cheers!

Yosguns, it was fun and a privilege working there in the booths with you and watching the participants come and go, most of them really glad to be doing something positive, if only a pound or two was all they managed to bring in.

How do you get that impression, Blurring? He's better from the first ankle-bender, but has a long ways to go for this knee-mother. It was from a bike accident this time.

Glen's new book, "Valley Walls" had just come out - well worth a read. One day Glen was at the VC to sign books, then the next day he gave a walking tour of Camp 4, talking about how it was in the 1960s. Fascinating!

Reva and Gary Colliver, at the location where they were married in 1965. Glen took the photo that they're holding, on their wedding day.

People like JOey F. don't get the props they're due. I'm watching you Joey, and yer always there, working.

Seriously, the guy is oddly always at the right place doing the right thing. Angel? Or just a nice guy?

It's good to see all the good work getting done, and just as important IMO, the camaraderie between the Park Service and climbers helping them make Yosemite God's little Valley.

Well done everyone! Sorry I missed it this year.

Tunnel View is always severely impacted due to its heavy visitation. On Wednesday, Sept. 21 st, Ken and Lisa picked up over 19 pounds of litter left by previous visitors. Some of the rubbish was tossed down the dangerous northern slope of the parking area. Lisa belayed Ken on a climbing rope, so he could safely clean up the dangerous slope above the 500’ drop-off above the Merced River.

As has been usual in past years, there is the evening raffle of prizes that are donated by the Facelift sponsors, much of which is climbing and outdoor gear and clothing.

Patagonia had a unique booth, offering to repair clothing that needed patching and other TLC to extend our favorite garments.

The raffles usually attract many of our favorite "celebrities," led by Ken Yager who started it all...

Ed Hartouni so often offers his skills in photo-scanning and other technical areas to other climbers. He’s been a HUGE help to me personally, scanning my old color slides and just a good all-around friend.

See Ya'll next year!!
