I saw his account was deactivated and wondered why. The guy is entertaining even though a little acid tongued, but never out of line so much that this would be warranted. This place will be poorer without him.

Werner better not have gotten the boot. This place has changed so much since I found the campfire 8 years ago. I'm sad. I am doing some research on climbing and it led me to ST years ago. So many people/names are missing from the campfire.......and we are poorer for it.....imho.

If Werner decided to take some time off, you can all rest assured it was his decision. So maybe a better question is to ask ourselves how it is that supertopo reached a point where it was no longer worth his time.

I think Werner has disconnected from the ST server to connect better to the Grand server of life... You can easily get lost when often connected to the ST server...

To me Werner is one of the great disappointments of the supertopo forum.
To have a legend, who lives in The Valley, with vast experience and insight, post not much more than useless or bitter babble and bump lame threads....it's just a bummer.

9 out of 10 posts were becoming very toxic. Of course the 1 out of 10 were usually very insightful and helpful.
And though I hope he took a break and is focusing his energy on the good he can provide to this world it wasn't happening here in my observation. I found it sad to witness as it wasn't always that way.
Doubt he took a hiatus - usually a disabled account is for a reason the admins determine.
He helped me a ton both times I did Facelift SushiFest and I have a ton of respect for the man for many many reasons. The avatar...

That's so wrong. Love to see Werner back. He was never malicious unless some dumbf**er like Crankster attacked him first, and his climbing resume was 2nd to none. He added a lot of spice to the campfire, although it's true that the word crankloon was one of his more overused ones.

malemute, I know I posted here way to much after my husband died. But this place was less expensive than a shrink and way more helpful. I've made many real time friends here and walked into a new life working in the outdoors, leaving a job I never cared for. All thanks to the people here around the campfire.
So, you don't always know what's going on in other peoples lives. If Werner liked to post here, so be it. Who cares how many times a person posts here per day? Jess sayin', lynnie.

Toxic? I was surprised how many of his posts are on non-climbing threads, and many of those are certainly dripping in sarcasm, but come on! You'd have to take yourself and your political views way too seriously to have his comments cause hurt.
I could count on him for knowledge of obscure Valley climbs and incidents. Maybe because I met Werner in the Valley more than 45 years ago (he has no reason to remember me, but I certainly remember him!), I thought it was very hard to take offense at anything he wrote.
In any case, I'm with Lynnie on this. I've met a lot of wonderful people on ST, (she not the least!), and the variety of personalities and the relative freedom on this site keep it fun. And as others already pointed out, his posts aren't erased; his account is merely deactivated. Lighten up, people.

Say what you will about Werner, the good and the bad-- but the one thing I have found to be true is that Werner is a spot on judge of character. And I do not know him personally.
Once firmly in the witness relocation program he will soon return as a new persona.
Perhaps he has already posted his displeasure with Werner on this very thread.

ST is but a small chunk of it, the largest part of our lives is left behind in those we love and whom love us. In that, you'll be fine. Kevin's post about Werner wearing down his Yo Hammer made my day. About 20 years ago, I was using my (then) 25-year-old Yosemite Hammer (old style - no caribiner hole) to pound in tent stakes, because I hadn't used it climbing in probably ten years. I got distracted, put the hammer down to tend to something else, and when I returned, it was gone.
Last year I decided it was time to re-learn modern aid, and I needed to replace the hammer. My current Yosemite hammer is pristine. I now know how to fix that condition and save my ego.

Well it finally happened: a no passing, live, reincarnation.

Here is the inside scoop.

After 28 pages of nonsense about ignoring history & sanitizing route names,
this was the fun addition I think it is from 2/10/16 but i may be off by a few days.
(AND THE ) "COLORED GIRLS" (GO) / NEGRO GIRLS a.k.a. US AND THEM
Negro Girls is not really my route. The FA belongs to Kurt Smith. In fact, I almost snaked his FA by soloing through him and passing him as he was bolting it up on lead. But I didn't complete that folly.
This was before Kurt Smith really had chops, so well before 1988. I'm pretty sure it was 1984. I started bouldering the route, even before Kurt had topped out on his FA. I was wearing a Walkman, listening to the B-52s, and smoking a joint as I climbed. I climbed next to his rope and passed up the first bolt. Then I went over a little overlap and went past the second bolt. Kenny Ariza , Kurt's belayer, wasn't very happy with me soloing a route they were still trying to complete.
Kurt was drilling the last bolt on the first pitch and I decided to just go on up and see how things were going for him. Obviously, I had plenty of confidence that Kurt wasn't going to fall and sweep me off the face. He wasn't so nonchalant!
As I came up to his drilling stance, un-roped and relaxed, Kurt pleaded that I not finish his route before he topped out. (Yes, I was being a brat). I finally realized my prank would've devastated him, so I waited for Kurt to finish his FA. I flipped over my tape while he pounded his last bolt, and then he completed the pitch, getting the FA. Understanding that humiliating a young climber by soloing around on his new FA before he finished it wasn't such a good idea, I actually had him throw me the rope and I tied in to finish the pitch from that last bolt.
I am surprised to hear I am credited with the FA. It should be Kurt Smith and Ken Ariza. I was just a fly in the ointment. Technically, it's true, I was involved, but in a weird, gray area, stupid sort of way. This is the first I've heard of (sic "Colored Girls" / "Negro Girls", On the face to the right of - Walk on the Wild Side.
As I see it, Negro Girls is a coarse and clunky play on outdated norms and a pop song. Sure, I could've made such a gaffe, but I don't remember being involved in naming the route. It was their route to name. They named it "Us and Them". Colored Girls would be more apropos for a route on that rock and would be more pleasing to me aesthetically. But I already have a Colored Girls route, as far as I know.

I'm not sure. I don't pretend to have any deep understanding of this, but I think that once you've passed into the Bardo, whatever returns to the material plane is not really you. Maybe your essence is in there somewhere, but it isn't you.
