Got gear to donate? We’re collecting classic and not-so classic goods to auction this spring for the American Safe Climbing Association.

Pictured here is one of the ORIGINAL Patagonia pile jackets owned by Don Peterson, the first person to climb Tis-sa-ack on Half Dome with Royal Robbins. This was a part of a big donation by Bruce Hildebrand and Gerry Kixmoeller that included DOLT gear, Chouinard gear and some very classic books.

If you have classic climbing gear or just gear that ships easily and is worth more than $50, please contact me. Any support is HUGE as the ASCA is a bare-bones non profit. No grants and few mega donors (though we wouldn’t mind a few more … we depend entirely on the climbing community to make cash and gear donations. Thanks in advance!

The Key Details - FAQ
When does the auction start? June 1
Where is it held? At the eBay OutdoorGearLab eBay store (OGL will donate some gear and some hours to hosting the auction). I'm pretty tight with the folks over there ;)
What can I donate? Anything worth $50 or more than can be shipped easily
Where do I ship stuff? Chris McNamara, 1048 Ski Run Blvd, South Lake Tahoe CA 96150

I'll send it next week Cmac. (Travelling right now). No need to provide a label. Shipping cost will be part of my donation. It won't cost much - within California. And mine is is much better shape than the one in your pic!

Chris/ASCA:

I have a new pair of BD alpine aiders, a BD carbon/cork trekking pole, assorted biners, an old MSR water filter, a 'tuning fork', and an old Leeper Z-pin. Can you handle the FedEx? I think it'll take two boxes--the pole is kind of an odd size.

Hey, I resemble that remark! After Don Peterson passed the jacket on, it got me through three winters in grad school at University of Wisconsin-Madison where the temps can dip to -25F!

Lol, Bruce. I'll post a photo of mine when I get home and you can judge for yourself. But your's will auction for more money as I am the only person who ever wore mine.

I do have a funny story about that jacket though. I ran into TM Herbert at the Tuolumne store in the mid-90s and he came up and said, wow I can't believe you still have one of those old jackets. So it was considered an antique even then I guess.

Marty(r) - all that stuff would be awesome. You can ship to the address above.

If anyone is on the fence about donating, and a prepaid fedex label helps, let me know. Its better if ASCA does not have to pay cost of shipping... but if a free shipping label is what gets you off the fence, then i will send one

Chris~I thought I'd send some of my students to Tahoe to deliver the goods...but that might not be such a good idea. Will box up something after spring break.

PhylP~Looks MINT! And far too warm for the wilds of Upland. Mine is a strange singed-unborn-linoleum brown and is only appropriate in a full blown snow storm!

The jacket is a size extra small - I think there were no mens and womens clothing then, just unisex, so today it is probably a women's small. My husband bought it for me right after we met and I first started climbing (1981). But then, naturally, by climbing in Yosemite Valley, I became so massively strong and huge that the jacket soon no longer fit. It's sat in storage ever since. Time for it to go to a new generation!

Lurking Fear, Zodiac, Nose....pretty open. Just want to avoid the crowd when possible. I'm OK with jugging and hauling. Just need someone with experience. It gets awfully cold in SD, so something later in the season when crowds have thinned out would be pretty cool. This is probably a one-shot deal says the wife. If anyone's serious, shoot me an email.

My apologies if the answers were already there and I missed.

1) When and where would the auction be? If it's not decided now, will it be announced later?

2) I know retailers do not take back any climbing gear because they are deemed unsafe to resale. I have an almost new harness that I bought and decided too big right away. Is that something that can be auctioned off? Also, what about used but perfectly safe (no fall) helmet? I can wash it, but I don't know what people feel about buying used helmets, so I'm not sure if shipping is worth it due to the volume.

Just curious. I'm sure you guys get all sorts of donations for the auction. What's the percentage that gets auctioned off? What are usually hot items? I don't want to pass on to you something that I see usable value but nobody wants. Thanks, Chris!

Past auctions have been done online. Just a guess on my part.

"Anything worth over $50"..... I believe I have seen used gear of all types auctioned off in the past.

More gear will be shipping shortly. (Unadulterated cuteness not included.)

The haul bag is made of some uber-rare XXX oz vinyl. Built on the Grade V chassis it has all the other features of a Grade VI (burlier 2" webbing, rain sleeve, and even a blowhole so you don't have to cut apart your investment when it fills with slurry and threatens to be immovable from your anchor.)

This is the lender bag that, in its own small way, launched the career of SuperTypo star Vitaliy--four days on Lost Arrow Spire! It has also been up on the Captain, .5 Dome, and the Column.

Good enough for a freakishly talented nurse, some traveling Swiss, and wicked smart engineering students from back east, now reduced to mere clutter.

Pony up some coin and help out the ASCA.

Peace and falafel grease.
