I have been told that Jeff is in the hospital, on a very hard pitch.

The Taco Stand has always come through strongest when we have a brother or sister in need.

Jeff is one of the leading lights in our climbing world, the baddest of the bad, and a life long hero to me.

Not only that, but he has been a non-stop positive force here on Supertopo, always upbeat, no matter his personal challenges.

Ther is no finer example of us - sturdy rough and long lasting greatness

All shades of climbers from Vulgarians Craftsmen to prep schoolers used all the same toys to gain the heights and ski the drops with the Lowe name strapped to their backs and every shade of climber has hoisted
themselves through gloomy alpine starts where the obvious simple additions of brilliance
like the side pockets, or continuous radius .....
Made climbing in all facets easier and the regular
so many eye popping innovations that came from action
Framed by Lowe accomplishments .... The pinnacle of what we strive for
Thank you jello....

I am told that Jeff is fighting pneumonia in both lungs, and that breathing and the coughing are very difficult.

Jeff has continued to support and attend ice festivals, outdoor shows and other events which are hard for him, but the stuff of life as well.

I hope Connie will give us an address where we can send cards and letters of support.

Jeff you are the original hardman. Thanks for sharing with us on Supertopo over the years. When I'm hangdogging on some weak sauce 5.7 looking like a total noob, this is how I see myself.....

When I feel scared and feel like I want to bail and feel like going down, I think of you with this stoic gaze, stoked to always be going up.

Thanks for years of sharing the stoke and your love for the hills. We've never met, but guys like you are why lots of us got into climbing and why we still climb.

I'm not sure of your faith, but I'm a Christian and I firmly beleive God is in control. Here's a strong word from the book of Joshua. May it bring you comfort and strength today.

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."

JELLO UPDATE:
I brought Jeff home from the hospital on Sunday, Feb 21. He is recovering slowly at home. This last bout of pneumoia was complicated by sepsis and really took a toll on Jeff. I am in the process of hiring more caregivers for Jeff. He really needs 24/7 care and a pretty quiet scene these days.

It's easy to post good wishes for a "hero climber". But in addition to being a great climber, Jeff -- to me at least -- is also a good man. I doubt he remembers, but there was a day in Italy a couple of decades ago when Jeff, with absolutely nothing to gain for himself, offered a kind word to me when I really needed a kind word.

Go well Jeff.

His primary caretaker other than Connie who was away, recognized the situation and rushed him to the hospital at 3 am.

Dear Jeff Lowe: On one of my better days, I was briefly mistaken for you! No joke! That was back in 1975 or somewhere in there, in Yosemite, and the resemblance was superficial: lots of hair, bandanna and conspicuous glasses. It was a fine day on Royal Arches, when I dragged myself and my hair onto the surprisingly crowded big ledge at the top of the Rotten Log Pitch and sat down heavily and started pulling up rope. I was still sputtering and muttering after the encounter with the saggy Log, which had wheezed rotten woodmeal into my face while I’d desperately clutched my way up the ghastly thing. From one of the resting climbers perching on the ledge, came an earnest, hopeful voice, tremulous with awe: “Are . . . you . . . Jeff . . . Lowe?????” For a few seconds, I planned to say yes, just for the glory, however ephemeral. But then came a huge, violent bray of laughter from one of the other inhabitants of the ledge: your cousin George, who knew too well what a duffer I was! To my intense irritation, George continued to laugh about this risible mistake for far too many minutes, his brassy honks of mirth bouncing off Washington Column and the Apron and Half Dome. For all I know, the echoes of George’s laughter are still rattling faintly over the Valley, wall to wall. I don’t think you and I ever met properly, but I would like to report to you what a fine example of honor and grace you’ve set for me then, after and now, and thank you for allowing me to enjoy the smooth burn of that brief and flattering confusion. I grew a foot that day, no matter what George thought! Thanks for all of it!

I only met Jeff once, but it lasted for 5 days. In 1978 I returned to basecamp on McKinley and a big storm had flights shut down for 5 days. He was there doing some bad ass climb on one of the nearby peaks. There were not that many people on the mountain back then, only a few people in camp, and we spent many hours each day talking and playing cards. We had all basically run out of food and our bets were hot chocolate, tea, and fig newtons.

I grew a foot that day, no matter what George thought! Thanks for all of it!

That's a fine bit of writing- one of the best I've read on this site.

Good Question...
Mar 8, 2016 - 08:59pm PT
If we look at our lives and think to ourselves; have I been the person I wanted to be, have I made a difference, have I wasted my life, have I in my own small way made this place a little better, a little brighter...?

I know for me (and at least for so many others that have shared their thoughts here) that you have made my life richer by your presence and your energy though I have never met you in person.

A sincere appreciation and all the best in your current adventure in this fickle life of ours.

JEFF LOWE UPDATE: Dear Tacoites last night Jeff made it very clear he is NOT ready to leave us just yet. He was adamant when he chose a challenging route: to be sedated and have a breathing tube put in and have a ventilator breathe for him. He was headed for respiratory failure, so this seemed the best option for now. Jeff can hear us, he is stable, in and out of consciousness and able to communicate with fingers and nods. His lungs sound more clear this morning and he is resting well. Our vision remains that Jeff come home and sit on the deck with his beloved cats and family and friends so he can leave this world on his own terms. Thankfully Jeff and I were with family, friends and Sulma while we talked with doctors and Jeff made this difficult decision. My deepest gratitude to Melody and Lillija Contos for their Reiki love, Sulma and Catharine Fahey for their loving care of Jeff and Phil Broscovak who kept a vigil on Jeff all through last night. To everyone, your love, prayers and healing thoughts and vibes are still needed, do make a difference and are greatly appreciated on this amazing journey. We love you all so very much.

Scott Baxter's father passed in the midst of the Grand Canyon Granitica Festival last weekend and I wrote this to Scott this morning while assuring him that he hadn't let me down in the least by going to his father's bedside.

It is an honor to be present when members of your family or close friends move out of this plane of existence and I have come to understand that most of my real regrets in life have come from choosing not to provide care and compassionate company for loved ones who are ill and suffering or approaching death from whatever cause.

I have spent a lot of time around Jeff Lowe and his partner Connie Self in recent years helping them with their film project and fund raising to manage their lives moving forward. Though it can be very emotionally draining bearing witness to Jeff's trials and tribulations, I see very clearly the deeper forces at play in our interactions that enable both of us to gain the kind of insight and wisdom that we both need as old souls and keep despair at bay. It ain't easy but there is purpose and inspiration in his situation and the way he is managing it with such magnificent courage and spirit.

Jeff will have it his way to the end of the line and that is beyond admirable. A true warrior's dharma. Venture on, Cloudwalker...Our love will carry you across the River as and when you need it.

Words by Voytek Kurtyka that applies well to Jello's climbing of Metanoia:

Mountaineering is a complex and unique way of life, interweaving elements of sport, art and mysticism. Success or failure depends on the ebb and flow of immense inspiration. Detecting a single rule governing this energy is difficult – it arises and vanishes like the urge to dance and remains as mysterious as the phenomenon of life itself.

When I close my eyes and picture what it means to dominate & climb, I see Jeff in the late 70s add...

The mirrored glacier glasses, the spray of ice from the crampon'd boot, the gritty determined set of his square jaw. Playing with the fall line, what can be seen of it, in the background, only a hint of what it must have been.
I hope that, that sturdy steel, can rule this moment and bring Jeff home.

I have this cute story today, so I thought I'd share it here for Jeff and Connie.

Two of our godsons were here most of today, helping me to burn slash piles in the more open forest. They will not be here tomorrow because they are going down to do the south route on Granite Peak, which is a puffer of a slog, easy for out of town guests. We had a great visit and they told me about two young avid climber friends over in Butte, who are getting married soon—and whose gift registry is a "Ton of climbing gear" and some other stuff (you know, the china, silver, towels, needlepoint pillows, quilts, all those "other stuff" things) I think she is also a team snowboarder, and he a runner. Great kids! This is my first time to hear of climbing gear on the gift registry, but it makes total sense for them. And I hope it gave you a smile.

Hey Connie, thanks for the good news.

Bruce, that was the 32nd anniversary of Latok in July 2010. The first shot was saturday evening, and unbeknownst to the Latok 4 (but known to me, Jody, Kevin and Tom) I secretly had Tom transport Layton who arrived a couple hours later.
The next day the 4 plus Greg, Layton and myself stood for that shot (only two of them changed their shirts).

Layton gave me that scorpion hat.

All of us had been friends with Kyle Copeland who had attended the previous year at Jeff's in Ogden. Sadly none of us saw him again.

The forests around that beautiful mountain meadow in the Tushers burned only days later from a fire started by lightning 15 miles away.

That party at Snowbasin was really fun. I just saw Steve this month in Arizona.

But in fairness Tom, those photos are all Jody's.

Wishing Connie and all the Lowes the best.

Just checking in from Italy as I've been here for a week skiing and enjoying the high country.
Dropped by the taco stand mostly to see how our hero is doing.

So glad to hear the good news!
Keep on keeping on there Jeff.

You remain an inspiration to me and so many others.

Just got my copy autographed of Metanoia today, and looking forward to having time to play it, thank you Connie and Jeff. What a super way to teach and entertain! Even the title is totally inspiring!

I hope the diet and healing are going well. I am on the Autoimmune paleo diet, which is helping me to get back on some boulders soon.

But what I most want to tell Connie is that eating an autoimmune diet has helped a lot of people who were "given up" by the medical profession—including me, who they could not actually diagnose, and who had been measured for a liver transplant and told that my "extremely rare form of cancer" would take me away before today — Ha! Instead, I am hiking and lifting weights and covering a lot of miles and getting stronger after being unable to walk more than a few steps and not able to even fix my own meals. And now they can find nothing wrong with me, except that I continue to refuse pharmaceuticals. Too many awful side effects for me.

Connie, send a PM if you want more info on Autoimmune protocols. There is a lot on the internet, but I also know how busy a caregiver can be. It sounds as though what you are doing a lot of good already with the gluten-free food, which is a huge step toward health. I am excited and happy to hear how much better Jeff is doing. And Connie? I hope you are doing well also, and getting enough breaks, and having time to take care of yourself. Caregiving is a lot of hard work.

Meanwhile, I will remember about the Special Trust for Jeff as well. I hope everyone knows about how to help out with all the bills through this brilliant idea of the Special Trust.

I could have been watching Metanoia instead of typing this. :) But I wanted to celebrate Jeff's improvements with you both, and send all good wishes and let you know you are in my prayers as well.

Warmest regards,
feralfae

Back online for the first time in months. Been up on the high desert fencing, planning, and improving roads on my tractor. Came down to make 6 appearances at the O. C. Tanner amphitheater in the show Sanctuary (in which there is a video interview of me with a live bluegrass band playing simultaneously on stage). Then they'd bring me out "live" with the band still playing.

I talked about Jeff, and then challenged the audience to donate to him ($15 or more got a Clean Walls video) and pledged to match the entire sum of donations.
We raised $2,240.

Last monday I visited Jeff for a few days. He's hanging in there. He has a machine that sucks the yuck out of his mouth and throat, and I told him it reminded me of Catch 22 where Yossarian shared a hospital room with a guy completely encased in a cast with a container held high on a stand with a tube going into the guy, and a tube coming out to a container down low.
Every 12 hours a nurse comes in and reverses the containers.

(Jeff liked that one. He cost me 3 minutes I'll never get back for another of his "word" jokes; "Great Expectorations")

Monday I cooked for Mdaly, his wife Karen, Greg and Jean, Mark B down from WY, Connie, Sulma at a very fun dinner.
Tuesday I got to see George, just back from a trip to Pakistan with donini. Valentina was also there and (fun as always) was very interested in coming to the ranch when I have "mommy horses" foaling mules. She had just lost a third tooth. Apparently the tooth fairy is now leaving a fiver!

Wednesday I saw Jeff but Connie was at the dentist. She felt very uncomfortable asking but they are hurting for money. I am overextended, liquidating profitable positions to build the ranch will reduce my income.

Still I left a stack of C notes.
C'mon people. A great leader and inspirational member of our tribe needs some help. He is still all there, sharp as a tack, but trapped in a body that won't work.

If you send Connie (Conner) $25 it should get you a Clean Walls dvd.
Metanoia is more than twice for numerous reasons beyond me.

Don't pm me. I'll be offline for a few more months.

Heidi & I took four friends to see the Metanoia screening in Ketchum. Connie was there and did a great job talking after the presentation, which about 150 people attended.

It's the second time I've watched Metanoia, although the first time was a free showing at the SLC Outdoor Retailer Show. It's a wonderful movie, so don't miss a chance to drive 90 miles to see it, as we did.

Best wishes to Jello & Connie!

Maybe if someone knows Connie, could you ask her to please take a look at the Kickstarter campaign as there are still a number of people who donated in 2010 or 11 who have yet to receive their DVD's.

Maybe the kickstarter email system doesn't work. In my case my address has changed since donating so I think that may be why I never received my gift. I know she has a lot on right now and really this is a low priority.

Hoping Jeff is doing well.
