So bummed. Roland was a super badass and a kind soul.
I like to think that in 9 months some lucky couple will view their new born and he/she will be sporting Roland's cheesy grin...

I didn't know Roland but heard about his passing on Wednesday from a friend of his. I would love to hear stories about his life and not the circumstances of his passing.

Bump for Roland, a cool guy.
I saw a few postings on the face book about his kayaking and soloing in Yosemite. But so far there's still no info on what happened?
RIP Roland.

I did not know Roland, but had been chatting with him via emails, while doing research for the Yosemite Guide Book. We had exchanged half a dozen emails over the last couple weeks prior to his passing. His last one to me was on February 6th. He seemed like a funny and interesting character, and was only just starting to share some of the stories from his time in Yosemite. He sounded like he had some good ones that will unfortunately not get told. Sorry to hear of his passing.

Hi all from down under - just letting you all know that roland will be sorely missed by a number of us in australia. He came down here many times in the late 80's and early 90's and everyone who came across him left a better person for having known him.

I met him when I was 15 and had just started climbing - I was lucky to have a guy like him to look up to and I'll miss him sorely we climbed all around oz together and he helped us out when we kids came to the states in 89. Just never thought I'd never see him again and I sort of imagined bumping into him in some random bar/crag/beach somewhere in the world and catching up as if it were yesterday that we last saw each other.

Deanne - i've sent you an email...not sure how the supertopo email thing works but my email address is in my profile.
cheers

Remembering Roland

"LOTTE COLBERT·WEDNESDAY, APRIL 20, 2016

To all who knew Roland C. Arsons, there will be a remembrance in Celebration of His Wonderful Life, His Kind and Generous Spirit and His Deep Love of His Way of Life on June 4th in Tuolumne Meadows and Lee Vining.
The plan is to meet at the Dog Lake parking lot at 11:30 and walk up to Lembert Dome for a gathering and remembrance of Roland. From there, we will go to the Mono Inn in Lee Vining from 1:00-4:00 to get together for food and drinks. All are invited to attend and please send this information to anyone you know who would like to be there. Feel free to contact me to let me know if you will attend."

Give it another decade or two, and there will be more of us gone than alive.

Roland was a wild and crazy kid. Nonthreatening, but strong and bad ass, consistently ladling out his boyish charm.

Wherever he appeared in the magazines, I got a kick out of his nom de plume: Budd Green.

I remember climbing with Roland (and Josh Vendig and Carlin Rogers) at the UCSC quarry a few times, but the image that always comes to mind is seeing him biking up the hill to UCSC with his scuba tank on his back and all his dive gear strapped to his mountain bike. It looked brutally uncomfortable, but it was very clear that Roland was not to be deterred! I heard later that he tumbled down one of the Water Cracks on Lembert in a soloing jaunt gone wrong. If you're going to grease off a climb, that's probably one of the better routes, but just thinking of it makes my palms sweat. I didn't know him well at all, but his enthusiasm and good humor was unmistakable and infectious. I'm sorry to hear that he's gone.
