I got two dates that would work, both have some advantages and disadvantages. Going to be at the Big Sleep area again, because of it's easy access.

June 24-26. Weather should be good, temperature wise, but a big snow year (hopefully) it might be one of the first weekends up there due to snow melting. Streams and creeks will have good water and approaches might have some snow, but nothing bad and the stone will be perfect. Close to the Solstice and the Moon cycle will be between full and 3/4.

September 16-18. Weather can still be hot up there, but usually pretty mild. Most likely no water and the biggest thing would be that is opening weekend for hunting. So, gunshots and quads would be a constant. It is a Full Moon that weekend though, and Big Sleep would see a lot of Moonlit traffic I think.

I'd prefer the June date, but seeing what some of yous guys and gals would prefer. Regardless, it's gunna be a blast.

Directions thanks Phyl

Here are the 2 wheel drive directions to the camping from the guidebook, typed out:

Brown’s Meadow Rd (7S02) directions:

Allow one hour from North Fork.

From North Fork, take the Mammoth Pool Rd (aka Road 225 aka Minarets Rd) east out of town and past the old mill, heading towards Mammoth Pools. At about 22-23 miles, before the pullout for Mile High Overlook, you pass Rock Creek Campground on the right. Three-quarters of a mile past the campground and before the road actually crosses Rock Creek, a major intersection on your left is dirt road 7S02 to Brown’s Meadow.

Fifty yards past the intersection there is a drinking water spring on the left.

Turn left on 7S02 and follow it about 7 miles until you can see Big Sleep Dome on the right. A small dirt road on the right leads to the right (south) side of Big Sleep Dome drainage and Shuteye Pass trail. Keep your eyes peeled because the turn, in the middle of a right-hand curve, is easy to miss if you are driving fast. This final short road is a bit rocky so drive carefully to avoid flats.

A large open area to your right on the way is the main camping area.

When is FaceLift? September might be perfect for those not in the San Joaquin Valley. That way, if FaceLift is at the normal time, they can come out for Shuteye, and then just move the party farther north the next week. Also, if we have a real El Nino year that approximates, say 1983 or 1969, we'll have trouble getting there without skis in June. For example, in 1969, there was still a small snow patch at the base of Monday morning Slab on July 4!

Still, I'll try to talk my wife into letting me borrow the Forester I got her, whenever the get-together happens. It disappointed me greatly to miss 2015. I'll try to make sure that I can make 2016.

this just in! Go for June. I am fine with having fewer people at City of Rocks and more at Shuteye, and any avid climber would enjoy doing both events in the same week.

Nature? We all would love to have you visit COR on your way out to ShutEye.

We can arrange for an adjacent camp for you, your dogs, & your Sushi groupies.

and yes to Nature sushi.

son of a bitch.

truth is by the time either of those happen if I still have my day jerb - 8+ years salaried doing web stuffs - it'll be big news. Hard starting a startup w/o funds. Hard starting a startup with time. Chicken or the egg question. I've decided to kill the chicken and hard boil the egg. Doesn't help much since I gave up eggs again (unless they are quail eggs on Uni but I digress).

kev is twisting my arm about as hard as it can be twisted before I can no longer slice fish with it. There's a good chance this happens one of these years.

I've always been interested in checking Shuteye out, and it seems much more dependent on good guides to the area?

The best places are hard to find..... tons of "then you cut through here and drop down to this ledge, walk out 100 yards around the corner... and look down... thats the "wall"".. sort of approaches.

Nature.... Sushi Fest please!!!!... it would be so cool, we could also have a BBQ and a fund raiser for the ASCA.

Going with June 24-26. Saturday night we will do the raffle for the ASCA again. We raised 560ish last year, let's try to double it. Anyone willing to part with some gear or donate items are always welcome. Not sure if Guyman has anymore Lycra, but we can hope.

Good idea on the BBQ Guy.

Phyl, really hope you can make it.

Daphne, talk Phyl into it.

Sorry Mike, we got so lucky on the July weather last year, but that won't happen again. You better show this year, line your guys out now and if you can sneak that Cam Ryan dude in with you beers are on me.

Received two packages this weekend for the raffle, one from Neebee and one from Phyl. Neebee sent five cool dreamcatchers and Phyl sent some great climbing books, two by Tami Knight, a cool little painting, and some cam lube. Big thanks to both of them.

The Big Sleep will be no problem to get to , so the June date gamble paid off.

Anyone else who would like to donate raffle items, please contact me at jross1838 @ g m a i l .com. Or bring it with you along with cash, tons of cash. All raffle money will be sent to the ASCA, so lets try to make at least a thousand for them. I failed to finish a knife in time before my surgery, but will be donating a rope instead.

Bring the little one. We'll set 'em up on a crash pad and let 'em wrestle. We can place bets. We'll skim 10% of the pot for the ASCA. That's in the spirit of the event...right?

It's on like Donkey Kong!

We're probably at about 70% in right now. Just keeping a little bit in reserve in case next weekend is explosively bad. But I'm optimistic!

Hello everyone! I've never posted here before, and I don't think I know more than one of two folks on the forum, but meeting a bunch of new climbers sounds like fun. Plus I've been meaning to climb the shuteye area for a while.

I'll plan on being out there, probably with 2 kids (ages 6 and 7), possibly one more.

I will have a taco sign at the start of the last little road.

Kahola, that sucks man, heard you will be stuck in the Valley. Not a bad place to be "stuck." Powder will have no problem finding good partners and by the end she will be your guide when you make it up there.

Bump ..... looking FWD to Friday through Monday fun.

I will not eat at any funky spots in Oakhurst this year, Rilleys tried to kill me last year...

As of now the STONEY contingent might be HUGE... Tremendous even.

We will stake out the same spot we had last year if we can... 100 yds upwind from the trailer.

This way we will not disturb the folks with kids when the campfire gets a little out of hand, like last time, at 12:30.

One of the Fellows wants to know if there is a good place to go shooting?

Justin, got any ideas?

Also....any good stream fishing in any of the hi- creeks,(fly-catch and release) or do you need to go down to the San Joaquin?

anyway... going to bring $$$$ so I have a shot at the big prizes! One of those ropes would be nice.

Best fishing relatively near to you guys would be West Fork of Chiquita Creek...a nice series of stepped pools about 1-2 miles upstream of the road crossing.

A bit more of a drive down Grizzly Road to Lower Chiquita Campground is a pretty good producer either downstream of the bridge or bigger prey again in some upstream pools.

Avoid upstream hiking of Shake flat or Dutch Oven creeks...local rumors have some Hmong grows in the area using the creeks for irrigation.

Ricky D ..... thanks for the info.

about these grows.... any other spots to avoid?

Last fall I went down to North Fork to resupply ice and beer. I was assaulted in the parking lot of the local grocery store at 8:05 am by a most drunken local resident who walked up and started calling me a "WHITE DEVIL" then took a punch at me!

He was so drunk I just side stepped the punch and took the 40 he was 1/2 way done with, put it on the roof of my car, then gave him the old college forearm push back hard and he went down.

The cashier came out of the store and told him to stop or she would call the cops.

Being the non violent person I am I handed the 40 back to him while he was sitting on the ground.... and told him to have a nice day and then I drove off back into the mountains.

So now I know to avoid North Fork..... some tough, shady people in that town for sure.

Hey gang, I'm trying to figure out the directions, looks like it's a little too local for Google Maps... roads as named in directions don't exist in their database.

Does this look right? It's not the same directions, but it looks like it gets through to the spot I can most likely figure as a group camp near Big Sleep... where the gray marker is past the end of what Google recognizes as a road:

If I've got the right destination... is this path accessible via 2WD?

Phylp, I did read the directions and tried to follow along on google maps, but I couldn't find the turn-off for 7S02, or the specific campground names or other waypoints.

Thanks rincon- that routes me via a different path than the directions given by phylp. It takes me out of North Fork on 274 past Bass Lake, then up Beasore Rd (5S07) to Central Camp Rd to Rd 8029. It ends on Shuteye Peak probably looking down on the Big Sleep area.

So it sounds like I need to just go old-fashioned style turn-by-turn directions and checking the odomoter using Phylp's directions.

Awesome Jan, the Stoney crew was responsible for a lot of the laughs last year.

Guyman, haha. Yup that's North Fork for ya. The Exact Center of Class.
As far as shooting, there are many places up there. There is also some alright fishing on Rock Creek pretty close to camp. Chiquito is better and the San Joaquin is the best.

As far as balloons and signs, there will just be one Taco sign this year on the last little turn to the Sleep grounds. The directions posted are sufficient. Basically go through North Fork, drive towards Mammoth Pool, and when you get to Rock Creek campground look for the first left after it. Stay on this dirt rd until you see a Taco sign and turn right. It's pretty simple.

Look forward to seeing you all.

This mama and her three little cubs (not the pathetic baseball team) checked in on our coffee drinking session one morning. After this pic, she winded me and bolted. Every bear I've come across up there seems to share the same reaction. I even got between a cub (also not the shitty team) and mom and she decided quickly the cub was on it's own. Never had any problems with them trying to get in our food when we were climbing for the day. I doubt they will want anything to do with us, but you never know.

Campfires were still being allowed above 4000 feet as recently as last weekend when I was up - but check with the FS in light of this recent heatwave.

As for shooting - 500' feet off road is usually fine - just no tracer rounds and don't make a spark or the 26 million dead pines will explode!

Also posted the sign on the way out.
7602 isn't marked, but after Rock Creek campground you'll see a brown sign with mileage values on it. You'll be heading towards Browns Meadow 9miles.

It's the first left after the Rock Creek Campground. Enjoy the drive of dead trees.

It looks like I'm not going to be able to make it. I knew I had to be in Fresno for a wedding Saturday afternoon, but was hoping to come up tonight or tomorrow morning and stay until noonish on Saturday.

Unfortunately, a friend's death and memorial service have now taken up Friday. I'll try to swing by to say hello if I can, but I won't have enough time to climb.

This pains me greatly, as there will be many that I had been hoping to meet, and many I was looking forward to seeing again.

The terrain below the Mammoth Pool Dam is some rough azz country to try to maneuver in and around. Did a down-dam foray a few years back with a Fly Fishing Maniac friend of mine and after covering maybe a fat mile in a hour said screw it.

Did have another bud go down early last year and said thee was a lot of debris washed in from the Aspen Fire that burned the eastern side. Later in the year, the French Fire burned down from the western side - so may be even more debris than before.

Why is Mammoth Pools closed to fishing, swimming (sign from FF post)?

Just curious. EDIT: Looks like the closure ended last weekend.

Justin, do you guys think those Nat Geo Trails Illustrated Maps would make a good raffle gift, as one of the consolation prizes?

They're better than the Forest Service maps IMO. It has just about all the trails around Chiquito/Shuteye outlined and named with FS road designations.

I'm going to score a couple extra from marina down here. The best part of these babies is that they cover the whole SNF. That includes our good friends, Shaver, Courtright, Huntington, And Wishon Lakes areas.

For Bluerings question:
Why is Mammoth Pools closed to fishing, swimming (sign from FF post)?

The closure is to protect migrating deer. Mammoth Pool blocks an ancient deer migration route that they still follow. The fawns have to swim across the lake to follow their mothers. They barely make it if they are not disturbed. Boat traffic especially, scares them off course and they drown.

The forest service closes all public access to the reservoir, till the migration is over.

The river below Mammoth Pool is very pretty. With boatable flows it is moderate class 5. There was about a two week spill this year, so debris may have been cleaned out. Now the flow is 32 cfs; enough to fill in pools between the rocky rapids but not enough to cover any rocks. Don't bring a raft. Float the pools then climb over the rocks is the way to do it. A super lightweight pack raft for getting across the pools and easy to carry or toss over the rocks would work well. I would expect a youngster could get through in a really long day or maybe a couple of days scrambling and swimming. With good flow it takes a few hours in a kayak.

The canyon just at the base of the dam is pretty impressive.

Hey Neebs! It was a good thing from what I saw. The family and I left yesterday morning after breakfast as everybody was heading out to climb from camp.

I had the pleasure of finally meeting a lot of people I've been eager to meet, face-to-face. And it never disappoints. As usual, everybody was cool!

And I had the pleasure of meeting Justin and Jeremy (and Josh and Mike A.). Very cool people, in a very cool setting. And I got to see old friends like Daphne and her friend!

Flip flop, Ksolem, Guyman, Nut-Again and I'll stop there. Too many cool climbers in one setting. It was good to hang with the gang.

My only regret was not spending more time there, but after a long week with my family and dog on Bass Lake, we were all vacationed-out and ready to head home.

Camping Note:
I really regret bringing my dog, Maggie. It was a bit of a selfish move on my part. I really wanted to meet everybody, but knew my old dog was going to be a potential problem. She growls, barks when other dogs are present.

We managed to keep isolated, yet still part of the overall area, which was a testament to the awesome-ness of the area.

But if you can really avoid it, try to leave dogs at home. Unless they're like Adieu, Justin 's dog. Adieu immediately was Maggie's focus. And then they met! Adieu and Maggie got a face-to-face.

That went way better than I expected. Adieu was like a friendly host-dog. But I'm constantly stressed in these situations, watching dogs, and what not. Better to leave the pups at home if you can. Unless they're super-friendly to people/other dogs like Adieu.
End Camping note.

Good times, my friends! I'm very grateful to the work everybody put in on this. I didn't take many pics, but I'm sure others did.

Thanks, Justin!

I saw some of your dream-catchers, Neebee, hanging at the raffle-table too!!!

The river below Mammoth Pool is called Tied For First if I remember right isn't Paul?
Myself along with Barry Kruse Eric Marten did the probable first raft descent of Tied For First in 1985. We made a cart for our SOTAR and lowered it down the dome just below the dam to get to the river. We had a flow of probably 1800-2000 and it felt pretty pushy. We spent two days making our way down and scouting the drops.
All of us worked for the same rafting company, ABLE Rafting, those were fun days.

I remember doing Cherry Creek and and a section of the Lower Stan that had a drop called Haunted House, that drop swallowed the raft whole.

Gang, I'm really happy I came and could share the combined stoke for climbing and nature with my kids. My iPhone camera lens is shattered, but still can take fuzzy pics...

Thanks Jeremy for help with the tire- that was my first tire plugging experience in the field- good I had the gear for it. Three plugs in the sidewall and it held for that rocky drive out and about 2 hours of asphalt driving before I got new tires in Oakhurst (2 others were pretty bald, and the blown sidewall was the only one that had good tread!)

Dernit Dingus, that was a close call. I woulda flagged ya down if I wasn't preoccupied. I never noticed you go by what with the rubber work and all.

MikeA, you have a heart of gold man, going a good ways out of your way to ferry us back to Big Sleep when I left my car at the asphalt (not wanting to push my luck with the triple-plugged sidewall). It was like a carnival ride for the kids bouncing around back there, heads banging ceiling, windows, and each other :)

Flipflop, thanks for excellent kid-friendly adventures and I'm sure more will follow.

Kris, next year you gotta bring Mahler's 5th and blast it! Better yet, play along with it!

Thank you Neebee for making the dream catchers, and thank you Moosedrool for giving it to my daughter when you won it in the raffel. She loves It!

Any pics of the corn hole masters? That is stylish campground entertaining.

Bluering, thanks for the chicken- I was looking for you at some point to see if your family wanted to head down to the pools, but you had already left. Next time.

I enjoyed the mealtime rituals hanging out prepping food and chatting with whoever was around our area, midway between the Stoney Point camp and Justin family central. Guy, Freeze, Kris, Jeff, Joe, and a host of others but I am memory-challenged when it comes to names. Just lots of nice faces flashing in my mind.

Thanks Justin for pulling this all together. It was a really positive experience for my family even if we hardly climbed. Very nice job of making the virtual community real.

I did manage to lead one pitch with my son belaying me, I guess it would be his first lead belay ever. The kids got in a full value top rope complete with biting flies and a rappel that involved jumping out to clear a wide flake. The kids didn't kill me yet so I guess I'll be able to get them out for more.

I wish I made more time to wander around and meet more people. So nice crossing paths with folks I haven't seen in a few years or in many cases, ever. Definitely adds more to the virtual experience, connecting faces and real interactions with the avatars.

A big group of Fresno climbers did the climb starting at about 9:30 PM.

Nice. I wonder if they froze, or had the right idea and nice temps. Not much moonlight at that time, though.

curlie..... When they returned, 2 am?, I got up to answer the call of nature....

it was a nice warm nite, I shook Joe's tent and it was still empty, I figured if you must "bivi out" at least it was warm.

I want to go to the pools where Justin and Mindy went to, are those hidden secret spots? Mike M. told me some of the best ones were at "whisky"....

time for a Shuteye, swimming hole guide.

Mike A .... get on that one OK?

happy 4th to you all

Weather was so warm, I can't imagine a better intro to unplanned bivies. No real danger, just a fun story and maybe some teeth chattering if fear of intimacy is an issue. Or maybe Joe "became a man" that night? It gets lonely in the mountains.

I'd recommend against this. Word of mouth is a far better way to share swimming holes :)

I tend to agree. Climbing guides are different. The swimming holes would degrade quickly. But I think Guyman was kinda kidding.

I've been 'guided' to some good ones over the years, but I have no idea how to get back to them. I was not driving and was probably half-drunk en-route.

I think I remember some by Red Eagle.

I' have to get back out, and I've been given clearance from the family. I get to roll solo.

No dogs, no wife, and no son. Just me and the Ridge. I love it all, but climbing is best suited for independent adventurers.

Justin and Jeremy, check yer f*#king e-mails. I'm coming. I'll prolly meet you guys at BS. I'll be in touch.

Where the f*#k is Mossedrool too, that guy is everywhere! Adrej!

Anybody wants to climb at Shuteye next weekend let me know! I can provide a commute, maybe.

HA! Sorry Mark, I only lurk here sometimes now. The Stoneys are badass in my book. Been super busy and I just don't have the time to organize something this year. If you guys come up let me know and I will try to hang and climb with you. Goes for any of you.
My phone is five (yosemite)5 9 two87 58one3. Would love to share some beers and ropes with you guys.
Hopefully next year I can get this party going again.

Justin.... I understand about how much of a big project making things like that go.

The people at Stoney have been asking me when "the Shuteye deal" -- as it has become known-- will be "ON"

I have be telling them... "the place is under a ton of snow"

Im going to pick a DATE and make a 4 day weekend and let all the SP people know..... we will let you know when we are coming up for some fine climbing, fab swimming and succulent slander...... Late July to early Aug.. I reckon.

When the creeks go down some.

I consider myself a bit of a local but I didn't make it last year.....but maybe this year if Justin is out I could help put it together and keep the flame alive. The T-shirts would be cool at least. How much interest would there be?

Scott

WAIT.....would this be the THIRD ANNUAL? What an idiot.....back to the drawing board on the T-shirts I suppose.....
