most info will be here:
http://www.sushifest.org/

going to have to raise the price to $35 a day.

This one might be huge. Last year word clearly had gotten out. Nine years later....

Happy New Year Everyone!

About 10 years ago to this day Jeff Lowe made a comment about the photos of my sushi that I was posting on the taco. His comment is the inspiration for SushiFest.

They could hear us all the way from the duuuuuuuuuuuuunes.

wow... 10 years and 30-something SFs later

"there" like we already picked out a spot yet you already know. Love it.

What can we do for Mike? Remember - what makes it sushi is sushi rice.

You keep doing this to me. Picking dates when I have to be somewhere else.

This time it's Hong Kong, where I'll be hosting several hundred suits until the day before the fest. In theory, I could get to the Creek for the 23rd, but in the real world... I lose out again.

But I'll pass the dates on to Mari -- she likes to get to Indian Creek every spring.

Well I know where IC is. I know Beef Basin and the big cottonwoods. If it's somewhere else but in the general vicinity of IC I'll find it.

I'm just kidding with you Susan. As the date approaches any help securing the same spot will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the comments on the website. Only took my 8 years to finally give it a little justice. Though please, let's be real... if it wasn't for all of the beautiful faces I wouldn't have any images to include in the site. We'd be left with nothing other than my blah blah about how this and that fish is or isn't "sustainable".

I sure wish I were In, but not this time. Last year's Indian Creek was so good. Great people, and despite the rainy first night, a good time. In order to get to the fest, you had to drive through a running creek(or get a ride over, if your car was just too low slung). And Aya's additions in the food were spectacular!

Last year at the creek there were a few of us left over on Sunday. There was also rice, etc. Matt was still around as well. We had a most enjoyable sushi meal - no stress, no cost, no expectations - other than the rest of the fish was required to be consumed. I think we also had the goal in mind to kill all of the rest of the bottles of Sake. I'm certain something similar will happen this year (unless we clean out the fish cooler on Saturday)

Sweet! I wanna talk to you about kayaks. I'm thinking about getting another and boating again.

And I was just about to bump this thread. Between ST and Facebook there's 100+ folks "going" to the event. My list shows seven who are truly committed. The hard cap this year is 60 and no more unless we find another professional sushi chef, another sushi bar, and a few more tents, etc. etc..

So over the next week or two it's time to pay for your spot.

Also, speaking of sushifest t-shirts, I'll have the new version available. They are already printed, most are men's medium or large (some XL some S), one or two women's, and one or two in white - otherwise black. $20 but I'm not asking for that until we make the exchange (unless you want one of the ones in short supply).

Furthermore, if anyone would like a jar of my Ginger/Tataki sauce let me know ASAP. I can also make the hot ginger/sesame oil available as well as my "eel" sauce. If there's other items that I use that you'd like like the yuzu vinegar I can order that for you when I do my dry/wet foods order.

I also have real wasabi grated and frozen for $20/lb if that interests anyone.

And one other thing - either we're going to have an unusually small event or it'll be a blowout. Either way I expect to have little room once the thing kicks off. Rumor has been spreading but it was my observation from last year that a lot of folks heard about it but didn't know enough to get the info at the website. Showing up day-off will probably get you turned away and i really don't want that. So just let anyone know to hit up this thread, sushifest group on crackbook or http://www.sushifest.org

Is this moosemath? It's $35 per day :) Cuz I was about to ask which night are you in for.

(that just made me laugh at my own self)

Speaking of such - if you're only interested in one night that's totally fine. Things you may wish to consider. Most folks opt for Saturday night as it's a bigger party. Which means friday is a little less crowded and thus less elbowing at the sushi bar. That said, we're going to have two and a half sushi bars this time around and hopefully a drink bar as well. 120 angry chopsticks pointed your way is not a pretty sight.

Paypal can suck it. WTF.

They locked my account because of all the personal (friends/family) transactions. They thought I was selling tickets to something.

But I explained what I was doing - saying my friends are making food contributions for a sushi dinner we're having and I don't make any money on this.

So moving forward please do me this favor. When you paypal me if that's what you choose to do (you could send a check if you like) please write in the note something like.

"Here you go my Friend... here is my portion of the food contribution for our two night sushi dinner with the rest of our friends".

^^^^ HAHHA They did the same to me even though every transaction was paid through my linked bank account. I wonder if some people have done money laundering using pay pal. They said I had exceeded my "monthly" limit even though every transaction was debited from my bank account automatically. Anyways, it was a blessing in disguise because I had gone nuts on some expensive eBay stuff.

I'll be on a 10 or 12 day road trip and able to relax a lot lot more. Hoping to climb as well but I'm in no climbing shape. South Sixshooter has my name written all over it. Will probably hang out in the creek until tuesday or wednesday after SF.

Is there a dumpster at the campground?

I'm going to be tight on space so I would appreciate it if;

1) we can distribute the piles of recyclables
2) do a trash run so I don't have to haul that back to Boulder

Also, as many may already know there is a few things you can do for me

1) dishes on morning
2) bring a 5 gallon jug of water
3) camp set up or break down (potentially get you out of dish duty ;)
4) possible ice run/donation

I need to start herding cats now. With less than three weeks before I depart I really need a good head count. Certain orders depend on this.

So if you are anywhere between 51% and 100% going and you've not paid please post here. It's fine that you haven't (but it does help a ton in knowing you are 100%).

The current count sits at 27 friends ;) paid so there's tons of room.

big spot in the middle. I plan to set the tents/trailer up on eastern side of that spot like last year. Mia already has a tent in there.

Hey guys, just got back from there and the Creek is amazing (as is usual). The Creek flowing through Beef Basin is definitely up compared to last year. I don't think the Sienna would have make it through the far side of the last crossing without alterations. So, don't forget your shovels to alter the cut bank side of the last crossing to the Sushifest site. Have a great time and wish we could be there. Doug, hope to see you and Aya again in Vedauwoo.

Ummm, past Super Crack, maybe a couple miles, turn left onto Beef Basin Road, at the toilet buildings. The sign for Beef Basin Road is kinda hard to see because it is parallel to the road instead of perpendicular. The main thing I look for is the toilet buildings just past the ranch (all on the left). You then go down Beef Basin Road for several miles before making a very sharp left (almost a 180) onto a smaller dirt road access that will take you across the stream and into Cottonwood. As you're getting close to that sharp left you will probably start to see Natures popups in the cottonwoods to the left (assuming he's getting there before you). It kinda looks like an oasis on the plains.

See you there

Hey,

Any other Cali ST'ers heading to SushiFest? I'm gonna pick Cleo at the SLC airport Thursday night and then we'll drive down to the Creek. It'll be our first time there. So psyched!

I'll be driving out from Sac and wouldn't mind company on the drive. Otherwise, it'll just be me and at least one audio book.

I guess worst case scenario we'll post a note on the board at the shitter at the beef basin turnoff. Or, you'll just see the sushi trailer overturned in a crossing. That seals it; we're coming in the morning so as not to have to navigate a crossing at two am.

Doug, we stayed at the Creek Pasture Group site. Call the BLM in Montecello for the reservation. Patty says that the weekend (actually the whole) schedule looked open after the 16th and 17th at the time we reserved it.

No injuries to report from the rough road either!

Susan

The one to the Cottonwoods had a bad exit (getting in)

Interestingly, the first one was the tricky one this time due to depth. The second one was not especially deep or slick mud. Jay's car made it through the first one and was on the ascent out when it died. Likely sucked water in someplace. We towed it out to the crapper and I think Jay joined AAA. It wasn't starting.

made it home last night.

we got lucky on friday and saturday night. because other than those two nights the weather was crap. wind kicked up massive dust and then it started raining. Spent two nights at a hotel in Moab.

I was so concerned with dust I didn't take out my cameras so I have very few images.

I'll post what I have later.

I can't thank Aya, Matt and Terance enough for their hard work.

I busted my ass for three weeks prior to leaving trying to get things in order. Glad I spent that time but could have used another week to finalize. Maybe by Vedauwoo.

Exhausted but dang that was fun even with all the dust. And the food and company was excellent.

The best story I have is there was a guy that was camped at the spot below us. He got into a conversation with someone about SushiFest and that he always wanted to attended. The person he was talking to pointed out SushiFest was set up on the hill above him. He bee-lined it and joined up. Put a big smile on my face.

Doug thank you for al the work that you did before and after this and every other sushifest. The amount of work you do is ridiculous, and we probably don't even realize the half of it (and I WATCHED you toil your way through your pages of todo lists). Maybe some day I'll actually eat some sushi :)

Now, you need to go on vacation after that vacation!!!

PS We stayed at the RedStone inn in Moab - one of the few dog friendly places in town, and cheaper by like $50 a night than any other place. Hot tub, kitchenettes, laundry, super mountain biker friendly, outdoor gas grill, walking distance to the brewery, excellent staff - yeah the bathrooms are a bit dimly lit and the beds are a little lumpy and the sheets a little scratchy (or maybe that was just my sand scoured feet) but overall we had such a good night the first night that we said screw it and stayed for a second. Absolutely would recommend it.
