Canyon is great fun. I've done it a few times and you can choose either the longer, full route down from Tenaya lake or the shorter "Airplane Gully" version that takes out the 4th class slabby down climb, and visits a fanastic pool at the bottom of the gully itself, which the longer route avoids. There are a lot of good pools either way.
70 meter rope may be more than you need. Longest rap is about 50 or 60 feet long, unless you are trying to rap that 4th class upper section, which is unnecessary with sticky rubber, or if you skip it by doing Airplane version.
Routefinding in the upper bit is a minor crux, with the Airplane Gully version easier in that respect. Exiting out the extendo boulder field is long and it is nice to try and get into the forest on the right side of the boulders after a half mile or so, a faint trail will appear..or keep looking...
Pools in the inner gorge are beautiful and downclimbs exist to skip rapping in a number of sections. There is even a register that can be found...
Overnighting is gorgeous, though limited spots are good. One 'slick rock' option about a quarter mile past the LeConte Boulder is on some smooth, beautiful angled slabs, on right, in the 'inner gorge' Experiencing the canyon in the evening is fun. Dayhiking it is no problem either. Can't do mid-Oct myself but email if you want more information..is that possible?
