Nailed a five point buck that came outta nowhere this morning on 395 just before the June Lake turnoff headed north to Parker Lake to hunt some Browns at precisely 0755 this morning.

Two CHP's at the Shell station saw the whole incident and came up to check on me. Stated I am the seventh deer casualty between Mammoth and June since Saturday morning. The Tow Truck driver from Mr.K's in Mammoth that hauled my ass back down to Bishop said this is the 12th deer impacted vehicle he has towed since last weekend.

Watch the fk out... they are out and fast. Never saw this dude before it was too late... BAM!

Fk that swerve shet. My Wife had the same deal happen to her last year coming down the grade from Mammoth and did the NASCAR deal and closed her eyes with two of them bad boys crossing directly in front of her. She ended up going in between both of em. Never touched em.

The one this morning, I hit the fker just I was finishing the O-O-O...H. Never got to the Shet!!! part of the sentence. That is how fast he came out of no where. Didn't have time to even react or swerve. Nailed em going around 75ish. Bag deployed the whole nine yards. Felt and sounded like I got hit with a 40mm A/A round.

Family and I drove from Ouray to Durango a few weeks ago at dusk. Within a half hour period we saw 28 deer on the side of the road, including one buck that stopped, looked at me as I slammed on the brakes, then dashed right in front of me. Missed him by inches.

We couldn't stop talking about how many deer were out.

My Dad hit one near Santa Maria when we were kids. Totaled the car.

Roger that on the Muley... that's all we got here in Eastside. Had a nice rack on him. He'll be feeding the coyotes and Ravens for the next week. I hit him so hard he went flying over the guard rail and down the hill. Cal-Trans dudes came by to verify all was clear per the CHP's request while I was waiting for the wrecker...fker!

EDIT: His Startboard Antler went through the radiator dumping all my green juice. Thus the call out for the wrecker.

Who the fk is going to walk down a 20-30 degree hill some 50', drag the sob turd bite deer that just fked up my truck and my fly fishing day, up the hill, throw it in the back of truck and then have blood all over the cab as it's towed 37 miles to a body shop. Specially with it's head half torn off....

EDIT: Chipper told me that had I been going 55-60, it probably would have been far worse. More area to be impacted. He had me at 75. He also made note that the faster one is going the better when hitting a deer or any other animal. They bounce off better. Take that for what's it worth.

Not with the 40mm hole that the jackoff Buck's antler put in it. The truck bled out green juice faster than the almost decapitated Deer bled out it's red juice. Tore off and took the entire AC compressor that was connected to the middle rt hand portion of the radiator with it when it flew off the truck and over the side.

Thus the call out to have the wrecker extract my ass back down to Bishop.

RFLMAO!!! Seriously.

Obvious that all your supposed Road Kill conseur's have NEVER impacted a 200lb plus fast moving mammal at 75mphs with your $30K truck.

Cus if any of you had, you'd all know, that is the least of your concerns after doing so.

Now, I suggest if you all want to check out my take on this, then go out and hit a fking deer with your $30K vehicle, watch the entire coolant system explode, get shoved up into the engine cavity, have the Airbag deploy etc etc etc, then, get out of that bleeding smoking vehicle, run down the embankment some 50-100' where that animal flew off to, grab the decapitated 200+ pound blood strewn animal and haul it's twitching bleeding ass up that hill back to your totally immobile vehicle, shove into the back of that vehicle, call the wrecker, have him tow you 35 miles to the nearest body shop, etc etc etc.

Damn.... how foolish of me. Had I been going 65 I would have not caused it to penetrate my radiator with it's antlers thus partially decapitating it.

BTW, Last May I was coming up 203 from 395 up to town just past the lane split and watched a Buck fly outta the hills and directly in front of a Subaru. I was going maybe 45. The Subi hit that fker straight on and tore the shet outta the front end and blew out the windshield.

I pulled over to check on the occupants and they were ok I then pulled the deer off the road so that no one else would impact it.

As you know Bio, the speed limit there is 55. Thus .... Moot and a bigass BAWAHHWAH!

With all the deliberate actions throughout history that led to you hurtling across the landscape at high speed, it's amazing you can blame the deer...
To make that happen, your ancestors explored, mined, refined, manufactured, regulated, and exploited a staggering amount of resources.
You killed the deer, for no reason other than carelessness and inattention.

That's not Funneeee RJ!

Had an incident back 35 years ago that almost killed me and our crew.

We were doing late Eve/Night ILS approaches at NAS Pt. Mugu from the south (off the ocean). On our third rotation, just after sunset, we were a mile or so off the threshold at 1500 agl. Then... BOOOOM and a second BOOOOOM!!!!

WTF!!!!!

Alarms are going off, blood all over my face we were dropping faster than shet and all I could think of was to get ready of a water impact. I wiped the blood off my visor, got outta my seat, got on the ICS to see if my HAC and Co-Hac WERE OK. No response from my C-HAC but the Hac was getting control of the helo and calling out MAYDAY and telling the tower we were declaring and emergency for an immediate landing on the numbers. I checked my C-HAC and he was out like a light. I raised his visor that had all sorts of blood and feathers on it and saw a goose head impaled into his forehead. I put my hand on it to stop the bleeding etc. When the Hac (Vietnam HAL-5 driver) looked over, he immediately calmly told the tower we needed Medical to be standing by.

We landed two minutes later, got the C-HAC into the ambulance etc. Shut down the bird and then started to inspect WTF happened?

We had flown into a flock of Canadian Geese and two of em blew threw both of the windscreens and one hit the C-HAC. The inside of the helo cabin was all full of blood, feathers and bird guts/shet all over. I was up till 0200 cleaning it out. The C-Hac recovered and got back into the saddle three months later.

Damn!

You can harvest RK in MT; it is the proper thing to do. Just fill out a simple state form in pencil and send it to fish and game the next day.

Deers are pretty small compared to elks and the one that would be the worst to hit are the mooses. Mosses have long-assed legs that put their bodies well above the windshields of most vehicles, until they are hit and that usually puts them through the windshield. The potential for large animal vs. vehicle incident is enough to give the Caulifournian a ticket to purchase a big truck/van, a big ol' coal rolling mobile, if'n ya know what I mean.

You might want some kinda modern 'cow catcher' up there in Clark Fork Le Chief. Especially if you make any forays into MT/TheCabs zone but I hear the fishin' sucks there, so maybe not.

Once got so bored fishing browns at Fish Creek Lake in Utah, I started waiting for clouds to come over, then would cast into the leading edge of the shadow. Immediate strike every time. In the middle of the day.

Of course in the morning and evening we really killed them. Very delicious fish. Only better tasting fish was a cutbow I took out of Telephone Cove on Lake Mohave.

What type Flies (Top Drys, Emerger semi-weighted or Bottom weighted Coneheads, Mice etc) and Wt Stick do you use, Gary?

And yes it's BS. I fish year round in all temps of water for Browns, Brookies, Cutbows, Bows and Goldens.

Some of the biggest Browns I have ever hooked were in the dead of Winter in water that was ranging around 45 Degs F in the middle of day with no hatch to be had. 2-3' of snow. Air temp in the 20's. Water was running any where from 85-135 CFS and 12-20 foot deep. Just happens to be my favorite time of the year to throw flies in the water and hunt for Browns.

Prime example of one of them locations...

Rick, I use a little fiberglass brush rod with black gnats on East Fork San Gabriel River native rainbows. Small, but wonderfully beautiful fighters.

Watching a herd of Nelson bighorns crossing the stream just above the pool you're casting into, just 25 miles from downtown LA, is a pretty cool experience.

We'd use 1 or 2 pound tippets. Higher up on the Iron Fork, we'd be dipping. Tough fish there, they spook easy and the terrain is rough.

Started out spin fishing with a Fenwick UL rod and an Alcedo Micron reel with 2 pound test up the South Fork of Big Rock Creek, crawling hands and knees to the bank. We'd cut two hooks off the smallest Mepps and Panther Martin spinners that we could find.

It's appalling to admit, but I did very well with a tiny day-glo orange Panther Martin on the South Fork, but those were hold-over stockers, not wild natives.

Yup... Nope. Three bodies of water in the Whites hold em. The ONLY three bodies of water that are still legal to C&R em.

I get the feeling you really enjoy messing with animals, and have a callous disregard for law, order, and the safety of others.

C&R is wildlife molestation. It serves no purpose.
You'd be surprised to know how many of them die anyway after release.
I went to CSU for natural resources management, my roommate and best friends were both fisheries majors.

It's easy to collide with deer on 395...The deer are usually lurking on the shoulder blending in with the sage..They tend to use the same migratory paths...The spot where John Fisher was taken out usually has deer standing in the middle of the highway...this a blind corner taken at 60 and there isn't much time to react..it's a crap shoot....

I get the feeling...

You must be on your menstrual period. Stop feeling... 99.999999% of the time "feelings" are deceptive and totally false. Fact.

The spot where John Fisher was taken out usually has deer standing in the middle of the highway..

Make that "deerS" RJ. I almost got taken out two weeks ago on the way to my monthly VA deal in Reno at the exact same spot. 5 Does standing right there.

West Virginia passed that law a loooong time ago. Not sure it's a law that really needs to be in place.

Yes don't swerve! Object fixation is also real. A friend of mine swerved right into the deer. Had he just kept it straight we wouldn't have been in the mess we were in and have to kill the deer.

I salvaged some elk years ago in CO. Saved me that winter, was pretty broke. The look on those yuppie climbers faces headed to the ice park, driving by in LL Bean edition subarus when they saw the blood on the snow, me with a hindquarter in my hand, my friend with a knife in the elk... Pure gold.

The Chief could really turn a phrase, alright.

Shooting the breeze with a local guide while Acadia climbing, he described following a car out of Southwest Harbor when it struck a deer, which staggered clearly damaged into the woods. The driver didn't stop, but in the time it took for the guide to pull over and find his knife, the guy behind HIM was also out, knife in hand, to go stock the freezer.

When I lived in Bend I heard a story that a Chinese restaurant owner had been caught clubbing geese in a park at night. Another time in high school I was at a Chinese restaurant eating what was supposed to be teriyaki chicken, or pork. Not sure wasn't labeled on the buffet. Was a bit too stringy and tangy. Only ate a few. My friend however are a massive pile of them. Week later, cover of the paper: shutdown due to butchered cat remains in the dumpster.

I guess they figure some people will put bullcatchers on the fronts of their trucks and go out "hunting".

I had a roasted fawn leg that was pretty good.

I've seen lots of deer hit by cars. Many people don't realize that over 60mph the headlights don't "see" far enough to stop in time.

AND DON'T SWERVE! A friend of mine knew 2 people killed by swerving to avoid a damn rabbit!

It happens so fast at night you dont even have time to brake. I had just left Monticello UT after the sun set. I was doing 50 in my Subbie and next thing I see is a deers head just left of my drivers side headlight. I did not even see it move from right to left across the lane. Took out my parking light, and a pair of skivvies. That adrenaline shot kept me going have way across the rez.

Yeah, don't swerve, and don't slam on the brakes.

Maybe I was lucky to have that mantra burned in. Don't know why, but it must have sunk in, because the day I killed a dog was a day I didn't kill a young girl or kill myself and another driver.

Rolling down a gravel road in a 3/4-ton pickup in central BC after some fire action, there was a young girl walking a big dog on the right shoulder. And a car coming toward me in the left lane. No big deal. The sun was shining, the road was plenty wide, and...

...and then the dog escaped her control and jumped into the road in front of me.

Swerve right... and kill the girl.

Swerve left... and collide head-on with the car in the left lane.

Jam on the brakes... and god knows what the truck would do in the gravel.

The kid was devastated. But she lived, and I hope one day she understood...
