I am thrilled to be on The Enormocast. For those that don't know, it's a podcast where Chris Kalous interviews some of the most interesting folks in the climbing world (one of my favorite episodes is with Peter Croft). I think Chris's talent, other than having a good podcast voice and sense of humor, is to get folks to open up and be very honest about their motivations.

The link below goes to an 1 hour+ podcast where I talk about getting into climbing, SuperTopo Forum, and more.

Listen Here: http://enormocast.com/episode-88-chris-mcnamara-living-the-ever-changing-dream/

Will be interested to see what this crew thinks about my forum comments. I've been preparing myself for it for a month actually.

I see the words “enormo” and “super” and “the wide”
And I wonder bigly and muchly what “the Clyde”
And some others with cred might have tried.
But that’s the same as pissin’ into the wind, I sighed.

Let’s just hope for the best not the biggest.

Common sense is the key to integrity.

Integrity is the key to trust.

I approve of Cmac’s philosophy of gentle moderation.

Thanks.

Check out the back catalog of Enormocast episodes--many are amazing. Peter Croft and Paul Piana stand out as two of my favorites. Hayden Kennedy was also great. Nina Capraz and Randy Leavitt are also highlights. The Craig DiMartino episode is unbelievable. Lots of amazing history, commentary, and insight on the Enormocast.

Thank guys, glad you dig it!

Survival, nice to hear you think this could be better than the annual "keep it real post."

Maybe i should do an "internal podcast" for the supertopo forum once a year where we just talk about forum issues in a Q and A format?

Hey nicely done thanks for posting!

We're currently stressing about a relative with borderline personality disorder and it's reminding me of your challenges with the forum :-) How to help and do some good and get the good stuff that we can get without making things worse and without too much cost and risk to ourselves. For us we're feeling very strongly that we need to disengage both for our sake and for theirs, before we metaphorically have some nutjob going to advertisers slandering us, or worse.

So to some extent I think it's just the nature of our borderline society now and our technological ways of distanced communications. Like your host laughing about pulling the plug on the forum and everyone freaking out and wouldn't that be awesome! :-) It's just kind of human nature one step removed from the immediate feedback.

But I don't know - a lot of people appreciate the freedom of this place that you create, and I think that's good, as long as we can stay one step ahead of insanity!

Thanks!

Great interview. Learned a lot.

Several things about the forum:
It is as diverse as are people and life. There are lots of good and bad. I think the good outweighs the bad if you let the bad go and don't take it personally. The history on this site really is invaluable. So much has been shared here. It's great that we can discuss so many off topic subjects in long exhaustive threads. Climbing will always be the common background and mainstay, but just like at a campfire or on a remote bivy there is so much more to talk about, not just climbing.

Chris thanks for the ST Forum.

BASE/Wingsuit flying is rad. I would like to see the community make it safer. Proximity flying is the worst drug of all seems to me. Learn to BASE jump to jump another day and into old age.

yeah, thats always been the goal. That's why we have always resisted breaking the forum into two: a) non climbing and b) climbing.

But I realize there is also a cost to having one giant bucket for all threads. There are more weeds to get through. But hopefully the weeds are not getting too tall!
