Heard on my scanner there was a head injury (unconscious) victim being life-flighted out of Mammoth airport this afternoon.
Dispatch said it was from Patricia Bowl.
I hope it turns out better than it sounded.

Watching a big fall happen next to you is a terrible thing. A group of friends were climbing together and he fell approximately 50 feet after pulling a piece, tumbling, but first impacting on his feet. The main concern was head injury. We did everything we could to stop bleeding with whatever we had. There was a great combination of experienced climbers, rescuers, and medical personnel that happened to be already on the scene climbing yesterday. He was hoisted out via helicopter none too soon.

Word overnight is that he made it to Fresno and is considered critical, but stable in an ICU. I don't feel comfortable talking about the full details on the scene yet. Best of hopes for our friend right now.

It's not far from the base of that 5.8 that goes up, jogs left under a roof and then goes up again. About a yard from the base trail in the talus. I don't know what to say about whether it should be cleaned up. It's certainly upsetting to see. That is really nice of you. The main bloody rock might just be able to be flipped over. Thank you.

Decked from fifty feet, and pulled only one piece? People, put in some gear...I'm sad to keep hearing folks getting hurt, and while I don't know the full story in his case, often these sort of accidents could have been avoided. It is the "sharp end" after all. If you're a belayer, don't hesitate to remind your leader to be safe and for god's sake, remind them to keep the rope from between their legs. Sasha

Yikes. I do wish they guy a speedy recovery- although it's a really bad place to fall and I'm sure he's got some serious injuries. Meh.

E and I climbed that thing a couple months ago. There's a slippery step or two at the start and the bottom is a little funky to protect, so I can sort of see how this happened. It is 5.8 - so someone solid at the grade may not see the point of fiddling in a bunch of gear. As you get higher, the cracks get better and easier to get solid pieces in. It's actually a fun climb, but p2 as a fair amount of loose rock to be wary of as well.

Edit to add: TI believe the route is Living the Dream (5.8)

Hey all

I ran across this GoFundMe on facebook today. I'd spent a few days on the East side, including climbing at Patricia bowl (which was very beautiful and serene) and everyone I ran into were very concerned with the climber who fell, David Pearson. I think that our community is awesome and can come together for some great things when we allow ourselves. I've shared the GoFundMe link here as he has major medical funds he is in need of.

A message from Claudia, David's mom:

David had a serious accident on Sunday, August 16th. He took a fall while climbing and is in critical condition with serious brain injuries. My utmost and most sincere gratitude to his friends who saved him while waiting for a helicopter. You are my heroes - I cannot find the words to thank you.

He is at the Trauma Center in Fresno in the ICU. His sister and I are by his side every minute since Sunday night. He is not supposed to have other visitors. Please know that we were asked to not even touch him to reduce any stimulation. I know David will love to see you when he regains consciousness.

In addition to a bleed in his brain, he has a vertebrae base fracture on C2 for which they intend to put him in a halo after he stabilizes. His Trauma and Neuro team are trying to lower his intracranial pressure.
Sedatives, diuretics and pain meds did not lower the pressure enough, as of last night he is on meds to paralyze his brain. Removing part of his skull is still an option as last resort.

We cannot believe the outpouring support, kindness and caring from his friends and his community.
Thank you so much for sending your strength, your positive thoughts and vibes and your prayers!!
Please continue to pray for him to heal and to get better. I will send updates when I can.

Here's another update from David's mother:

"Still very critical, still in medically induced coma. His ICP (intra cranial pressure) still not stable. Neuro team was planning craniectomy to reduce pressure on Friday, then decided to wait a few more days as long as they can still give him meds to lower the ICP when necessary.

Good news: he is still here and hanging on. CT Angiogram did not show additional intra cranial bleeds. Neuro team is saying that brain swelling might start to decrease - but is unable to tell us what his chances of recovery are. We have to wait. Once his ICP becomes stable, they will stabilize his fractured vertebrae.

We are still with him around the clock.

Thank you for sending your love, support and prayers - will provide an update once information becomes available."

She also wanted to urge others to please use helmets while climbing. She says that his medical team unanimously agree that he would be in much better shape had he worn a helmet that day.

On a personal note: David has been a good friend for many years. Anyone that knows him will tell you that David LOVES climbing and is the pure definition of "stoke". It's really been inspiring to see all the support from our community.

And if you can donate to his medical bills, please do at: http://www.gofundme.com/davidpearson
If you can't, just send him prayers, good vibes, and positive thoughts. He really is an amazing person and deservse all the love we can give right now.

[photoid=425738]updatefrom David's mom:

update on David
His Trauma and Neuro team have determined through an MRI that David suffered a potentially devastating brain injury affecting his entire brain in the accident - and not just a local bleed in his frontal lobe.
They have removed the bolt which measured the ICP and are currently tapering him off the sedatives so that they will be able to do an assessment of the extent of brain damage - which they intend to do next week (it takes time to get the high doses of Versed and Fentanyl out of your system).
------------------------------------------------------------

Diffuse axonal injury isn’t the result of a blow to the head. Instead, it results from the brain moving back and forth in the skull as a result of acceleration or deceleration. Automobile accidents, sports-related accidents, violence, and falls, are common causes of diffuse axonal injury.
When acceleration or deceleration causes the brain to move within the skull, axons, the parts of the nerve cells that allow neurons to send messages between them, are disrupted. As tissue slides over tissue, a shearing injury occurs. This causes the lesions that are responsible for unconsciousness, as well as the vegetative state that occurs after a severe head injury. A diffuse axonal injury also causes brain cells to die, which cause swelling in the brain.
DAI is a stretching injury to the neurons (the cell bodies of the brain) and axons (fibers that allow for communication from one neuron to another neuron). Everything our brains do for us depends on neurons communicating. When the brain is injured, axons can be pulled, stretched, and torn. If there is too much injury to the axon, the neuron will not survive. In a DAI, this happens to neurons all over the brain.
You cannot go back in and connect these neurons microscopically so what you hope is that the diffuse axonal injury, a disturbance to the microscopic structure of the brain, is a physiological disturbance. In other words, you have rattled it so the nerve cell is unconscious, and not cut, because the brain has very little capacity to re-grow its axon.
-----------------------------------------------------------

We do not know if David is going to wake up, or what level of functioning he will have. We have been told that they are very concerned with the MRI, but patients with this type of injury can make a recovery. It is however also possible that he might not wake up - it all depends on the amount of damage which was done to his brain in the accident.

Please bear with us as we are anxiously awaiting the result of the assessment. Please also know that we are NOT giving up, we remain fiercely positive and are embracing him with all our love and strength, hoping and praying for the best. We refuse to allow the fear of what the outcome could be to overshadow our determination to help him pull through.
This is David - with the biggest heart, contagious in his positive attitude, loving life and freakishly strong, if anybody can pull this off it will be him

FANTASTIC news this morning: David is awake and responsive!!!

Here's the latest from Dave's mother:
Our prayers and hopes have been answered: David will not spend the rest of his life in a vegetative state due to his brain injury. David gave his nurse a 'thumbs up', and then another 'thumbs up' with both thumbs. This means his brain is working for him to understand what she asked him to do, and then to actually do it. BEST NEWS EVER. We could not fathom losing him, and we were struggling to accept the dire prognosis he had been given. We literally could not be happier - and we know that you feel the same. The mood in the Trauma ICU is downright giddy, the nurses and respiratory therapists are all smiling at us. Everybody has been pulling for him. Thank you for all the love and support you sent to him and extended to us. He has a long road ahead of him - but whatever will come next will be a piece of cake - compared to the fear and sadness of the possibility of losing him.

Huge step in the right direction (to not be ventilator dependent), plus: he can cough instead of needing to be suctioned to clear his lungs. He is blowing kisses to the nurses he likes when they leave the room, looks like he found a way around the fact that he cannot talk yet ;) Respiratory intends to add a single valve in a couple days to the trach collar (if he continues to be able to breathe on his own), which will allow him to try and speak. In case anyone is still following this thread... David is doing really well! I'm a close friend/recent girlfriend and I've been communicating often with his mom through all of this. It's an insane and wonderful miracle that he's okay. He's out of the ICU and into rehab and doing really well! He still can't have visitors, I saw someone asking and wanted to clarify. Updates are posted still on his GoFundMe page (gofundme.com/davidpearson) and donations are still being accepted and MUCH appreciated by his mom and sister who have been by his side now for almost 6 weeks (they don't live in Fresno, so they've been away from home all this time). I just found this thread and it warmed my heart seeing all the people praying and sending love, I have to believe that it somehow worked. :) Be safe out there, y'all! In the original post about his accident, his mom mentioned that she knows wearing helmets is a completely personal choice, but the doctors told her that it's likely a helmet would have reduced the severity of his injuries. I've been extremely meticulous about wearing a helmet since then, it's a good reminder. I'm psyched for David to see this thread when the time comes. He knows well how wonderful the climbing community is, but I'm sure he'll be glad to see this. Thank you all. <3

I received this update on David this morning...it actually brought tears to my eyes.

And after all the tragedies and bickering that seem to engulf the Taco these days, I thought it would be nice to shine a bit of light into the darkness...

From David’s mom:

David was not lucky the day he fell. But everything that happened after his fall has been the most fortunate, unbelievable and miraculous outcome you can imagine. Friends hiking out to call for help, ER/ICU nurses hiking in the same location and rushing to stabilize him, a CHP helicopter/paramedic rescue team doing everything possible to get him to the trauma center in Fresno, his team of trauma and neuro surgeons, all the nurses and respiratory therapists working for weeks to save him.

Despite the devastating and grim diagnosis of Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI) which is very likely to have an unfavorable outcome, despite an MRI which left very little hope that he would ever recover from his injury – he has surprised all his doctors, beaten all odds and continues to improve every single day.

After four weeks in the ICU, David has spent the last two weeks on the acute rehab floor of the hospital. He walked for 13 minutes outside with a walker today. He is talking and working with speech therapy every day. He is solving word problems while working on his cognitive and reasoning skills faster than I think I would be able to. He is already planning to go back to Bishop as soon as he completes his traumatic brain injury rehab/therapy in Orange County.

The support from the climbing community, his friends, his co-workers in Bishop, his former partners, the ‘brotherhood of the badge’, his lacrosse family, high school teachers and even total strangers has been unbelievable. You have helped not only financially with the burden of his medical bills, but your kind words made our weeks of worrying more bearable. He is blessed to have so many people helping him with his recovery. Thank you so much for your kindness, your prayers, and your generosity. We did not know nor expect that he would receive such overwhelming support from all of you - but we will be forever grateful.

So lookie here!

"We did not know after his accident that he would have a village stand behind him and support him. It felt like we were not all alone by his side, we knew you were supporting him and fighting alongside with us. Your prayers helped beyond words and we will always be grateful for your kindness and your support."

"He is walking (with slight assistance of a cane), can cook his own food, can write, can tie his shoes – and still has a funny smirk and a dry sense of humor. It will be a long road of recovery and a lot of hard work, but he has a chance of making a 100% recovery."
