So what do you see as the solution to the problem you describe?

From our position as plebes I don't see a simple solution.

It's easy to say burn the whole thing down but that doesn't work since it'd leave a huge vacuum behind historically filled by something worse.

It's probably better to focus our plebeian energy on very local governments where some modicum of change might actually be implemented. Educating people not to be afraid of everything we're told to be afraid of is good. Teaching people to spot propaganda as best we can...

Everything being cyclical, the current system will likely collapse on it's own. But like the boot flake, who knows when!

Ms. Clinton said exactly the same things Romney said in his speech, but I believe her number was 47.5%. I have the tape.

Donald is fear base, playing to lowest denominator. Hillary wins and wins fairly big.

Hillary's speeches weren't given in secret. Hundreds of people were there and could, and would relate what she talked about if there was anything at all interesting to report. Release them or not, no big deal.

Only Donald and his lawyers know what he's hiding by refusing to release his tax returns, unlike every other presidential candidate.

You're probably right, winemaker. The reason he lied about releasing them is he probably pays no taxes.

Muslim ban? Nah, that's just a suggestion.
The wall? Maybe it's a virtual wall.
Deportation? Mmm, probably rhetorical.
Self-funded campaign? You kidding?

This clown just makes it up every single day. His idea of the truth is whatever last came out of his ignorant mouth. Hard to imagine so many gullible people amongst us.

All this "discussion" doesn't matter much at this point. It's many months before the election, yet already people have pretty much made up their minds. Certainly the participants in this thread have made up their minds, and there's no "discussion" that's going to change minds in this context.

So, now it amounts to one of two things:

1) Hearing oneself talk to oneself and thinking: "My arguments are entirely compelling to 'rational people,' so anybody that can't get it based on what I'm saying is an idiot." This amounts to intellectual masturbation: It feels good to the talker, but isn't edifying anybody else.

2) Being part of the "agrees-with-me" circle-jerk. This is shared intellectual masturbation: Everybody in the circle is getting a good feeling, but all the "idiots" not in the circle look on in amazement that anybody can be getting a good feeling.

People in (1) are largely addicted to the effort to extract validation of their opinions from "the opposition." Such validation is not gonna happen, so you'll just have to live with the "pleasure" of knowing that you know that you know that you're right.

People in (2) are largely addicted to the pervasive sense of superiority and validation that emerges from the echo-chamber. Because they don't have to "convince" anybody to feel validated, the echo is sufficient for satisfaction. The echos let you know that you're right.

The nation is totally polarized, with virtually everybody voting "against" what they see as "the other" party, and with most independents already decided. The election will basically amount to nothing more than a "poll" of the actually-voting population to show us how "left" or "right" the (bare) majority is. The electoral college will likely not even reflect the popular vote. LOL

The IRS has all his tax records that he has also been subjected to audit for the last 12 years. What other candidate has ever been subjected to audits like he has? You know they are legit since he's been audited by the IRS.

What other candidate claims (untruthfully) to be worth 10 Billion dollars?

Trump could release the results of the prior eleven audits at the same time he releases the tax returns.

I know this is a bit off topic, but I ran across an interview with a Pentacostal Minister, Jerry Dewitt, who had given up religion and become atheist. Very interesting and thoughtful answers that when put in a political context possibly indicate why self proclaimed religious persons would support Trump.

the article is here: http://www.rawstory.com/2016/05/why-a-pentecostal-preacher-gave-up-on-jesus-and-became-an-atheist-activist/

Here's one small exchange that some insight into judgmental religious people:

(GC is Greta Christina, the interviewer and JD is Jerry Dewitt)

GC: I was surprised to learn that, when your ministry shifted from focusing on religious doctrine towards simply helping other people, you got so much resistance from so many of your congregants. When you wanted your church to help Katrina victims, you got serious pushback from people who thought Katrina was God’s judgment.

Do you think a focus on doctrine and supernatural belief often interferes with people’s impulse to help each other? Or is it just human nature—some people are more compassionate, and some are more judgmental, regardless of whether they’re believers or atheists?

JD: Maybe a little of both. My experience in the ministry taught me that personality plays a far great role in people’s decisions and behaviors than most of us give it credit for. Personality types seem to be drawn to the theological worldview that suits them best. Judgmental people favor judgmental world views, believers and atheist alike.

And:

GC. You talk about that a lot in the book: the feeling you had that if your faith were stronger, your life wouldn’t be so hard, or that if you could just find a missing piece of the puzzle of doctrine, your doubts about your faith would clear up and you could be a better leader. Can you talk about that? How did the comfort and the guilt religion provides play out for you, and for the people around you?

JD: Many times the comfort religion offers comes at a very high price. This form of comfort is at the same time both temporally present and linked to an uncertain moment in the future. I’ll use the doctrine of Healing as an example. If you are ill, you may be comforted by the idea that God can heal you and may very well do so…one of these days. For some, this is more comforting then “knowing” you don’t know what the future truly holds.

The exorbitant price that is paid at the very same time that a measure of comfort is received is the emotional abuse one silently suffers while trying to receive/earn the promised Healing. Knowing that God could heal you immediately, but doesn’t, naturally causes the believer to ask, “Why not?” “What do I need to do to better please God?” “Is it God’s will for me to suffer?” “What’s God’s purpose in allowing this illness in my life?” The list goes on and on.

Well worth a read.

Intellectual masturbation?

You oughta know MB, wall of text.

The whole Trump candidacy is a masturbatory celebration of Trump's narcissism.

I will continue to speak out about what I see as an evil racist egomaniac fear monger. This thread will last til November. Best settle in for a long ride. But counsel away if you must. Trump is still an ignorant dick.
