The San Juans offer up world class hiking....steep trails bring you to beautiful alpine meadows resplendent with the best displays of wildflowers in America. And you get all of this while rarely seeing other hikers.
Angela and I did the Hayden Trail today. You get 2,600 vertical feet in the first 2.4 miles and then a couple of miles of undulating alpine meadows.
I love Indian Paintbrush and got to see four shades of them on this hike.
Hiking today, climbing tomorrow.....fresh limestone awaits.
Come visit!

Those are a amazing Jim. But I invite you up still this summer to Glacier. Along with bear grass, huckleberries and glacier lilies, Indian Paintbrush is another thing this national park is known for. Come stay at the cabin.

Very nice in the Snowy Range mountains of southeast Wyoming a week ago as well. It is the Wyoming state flower.

Okay, only the first is Indian Paintbrush, but the other
two are some of the gorgeous flowers I saw today at one of
our local open space parks.

Baseball, hiking, wildflowers? Do I see a trend here Jim. New PR agent? Trying to tell us something?

Tell you what Guido....I'll get a Standup Paddleboard and practise religiously on the Ridgway Reservoir......sorta like sailing isn't it? Then in December we'll sail down to the Anarctic Penninsula.....some wicked looking climbing down there! I guess we better bring Vitaliy for rope gunning and Moosedrool for humor.

Sounds good to me and we can stop off at the Ridgway Drug Store for some supplies to hold us over in Patagonia or at least until we get there. SUP across Drakes Passage?

You're on, I here the Drake Passage is a bit breezy but only about 600 miles. By the way...the Ridgway Dispensary is offering some awesome Summer specials if you but them by 4:20.

This sounds like the start of that joke. Hell is where the mechanics are ..., and heaven is where Vitaliy is the rope gun and Moosedrool is our master of ceremonies. Or something like that.

^^^^^Moose funny!

Patty and I were thinking of driving through Ouray on our way back from visiting in Denver anyway; we stopped off last year and just enjoyed a couple hours in the area. With the beautiful alpine meadow shots, you have us sold on going hiking there at a minimum. I think we will be coming through on Wednesday after the Vedauwoo sushifest. If you are around it would be great to meet up with you and Angela again. If not, we will likely take you up on the Hayden Trail advise.

I don't know what public office you plan on running for, Jim.

You should prepare to answer questions about genetically-altered Native American paintbrushes, though (also know as GMNPs).

"Be prepared."

And how are you at open-water swims in salt water? At night.

Thanks for starting a thread on this topic; as it brings back some wonderful memories.

My father took us each summer to different National Parks to hike and learn about nature. A family of 9, packed in a Pontiac Safari station wagon for 3-4 weeks. Everyday was pre-planned, from point of departure to the hour of arrival at home in GA. He even had all hikes decided upon before we ever left home.

How my dad organized those trips, between 1964 - 1973, I will never know. It must have taken him a whole year to do it, considering he made most arrangements by mail correspondence; as he was not fond of the telephone. The telephone was a major compmonent of his trade, a small town cardiologist. As much as he loved his patients, he hated to hear that telephone ring.

We visited every state except Alaska, spent the majority of the time in the major National Parks, except Yosemite. (He most have had a premonition of my exodus to the valley.) I never asked why.

He studied the plant taxonomy and nomenclature for months so that he could identify them on our hikes. He had a fantastic memory, I dare say photographic. He could rattle off the common and scientific name of the flora as we found it and it was rare for his identification not to be confirmed when checked.

I didn't inherit the memory gene; but Indian Paintbrush is for a fixture in my mind.

And I can't make a decision on what to eat for lunch...

You're up early Hooblie. I'm cooling my heels in Tbilisi waiting to fly to Istanbul. The Caucasus Mountains of Georgia are beautiful but too late for many wildflowers.
