So I have this 2 year old see, she climbs like mad and I need to tie her in now...she will be 3 in Dec...

Does anyone have any kids gear you no longer use in the garage?

I'm just looking for a kids harness and shoes, maybe a helmet..

Just the cutest pumpkin. Got no gear but maybe the handier people can help with some custom gear or hand me downs.

Not that I'm willing to part with just yet. Though, FYI, the Petzl Oistiti was too large for my 3yo. The Trango Jr on the other hand, is adjustable enough to fit her quite well. Hope that's helpful.

I have some old stuff for you in the garage, right next to the leaky car batteries and drain cleaner - belay on (?)

Uh, speaking for myself as the father of a kid the exact same age... I'm all down with used kids stuff in general. But if I wouldn't use a rope or harness of unknown history for myself I'd probably also want to get new stuff for my kid. Not that she's gonna be shock loading any of it to several kN or anything, but why f with it? Shoes - okidokie but helmet/harness - notsomuch?

Now that I'm done being a total dick, I wanna get real and tell you that it is absolutely fantastic that you've got her out there doing that stuff at her age. Hats off to that part for sure! I aspire to gettin' my girl out like that ASAP.

I totally get the used gear angle...but in all honesty, she weight very little and will be on a short rope...the helmet yes, I agree and that's why I said "maybe a helmet". I think a little bike helmet for kids her size should work well enough.

Obviously I'll take into consideration the age of the harness, but I have to assume these get used little and are quickly outgrown, on top of being pretty overbuilt body harnesses...which is one reason why I don't want to blow a bunch of money and end up with some of it as well, lol..

I actually thought about just tying my make a harness out of some webbing, but I trust used gear over my own ability to access DIY solutions..unless someone has some magic guidance on the subject?

I tried tying a harness out of webbing. No. Just NO. Mine will use a bike helmet too, initially. No shoes for her yet. So far, the only thing she's climbed is the side of the play house. Loves to stand back with the rope running over the top of the swing set and have me yank her off the ground and let her swing. Baby steps.

On the complete other side of the coin, when people ask me when I started climbing I'd love to casually say "Oh, when I was about three". :-D

Unfortunately, I do not have one to sell you. My younger cousin has Pezel onesie and seems to really enjoy it. My other younger cousin is now getting ready to climb so Ive been researching like crazy for him! I know you're hoping for someone to sell you one but if you wondering how to buy a harness for a kid I found this article interesting: http://www.infiniteclimb.com/knowledge/how-to-buy-a-kids-climbing-harness/

Nothing physical to give, but here's some first hand info:

A few months back I combined my REI dividend with a 20% off coupon to buy an Edelrid Fraggle II for about half price. Lots of padding and super easy to put on (holds its shape well, inside and outside are obvious), but may be a skosh baggy on a 3 year old, and it cinches up a bit when lowering (just a bit uncomfortable, per my niece, and easy to relieve once they're down).

Shoes we scored from the used bin at the gym. Craiglists sometimes has deals, and sometimes people want $50.

Second this - the Trango Jr. fits just fine with our 2.5 yr-old (she's 26 lbs, probably a better metric since there's so much variation in toddler size), the Petzl was too big when we tried it with our older daughter at the same age. We don't even have the Trango straps cinched all the way down with our 2.5 yr old (almost all the way, but not all the way).

The bike helmet is a good idea. My little one had a habit of traversing out from the plumb line and then "rolling" back to plumb including getting inverted at times. Some of this was just him having a good time, acrobatics and such, but the helmet did actually get put to use.

And FWIW I belay him on beater old ropes all the time. No way is a 35 lb kid going to break even the fuzziest climbing rope on top rope.

Cragman's kid's harness works great up to about 6 or 7 years old (depending on growth rate of course). I've got Adam's climbing helmet, in very good condition, which your girl would grow into. I'm sure I've also got his small sized adult style harness for later.

I'm out of town for a bit so can't be sure I know where they are.
PM me if interested.

Don't bother with climbing shoes till she's much older. Any old kid's sneakers will do just fine. Just be sure you can reach her foot when she gets it wedged in a crack. Actually sneakers are easier to get out than climbing shoes.

Wow!, thank you everyone...

So on our 1st roped climbing day I opted for School Rock at Donner Pass, because I remembered this little slab there at the bottom. It's only an hour's drive for us, so why not, it beats the gym , the temps are better and the views are nice.

Little did I know everyone had the same idea, but it was cool, there was plenty of other kids for Rozzi to watch, learn from and show-up.

We threw up her pink 9mm half rope, put on cragman's harness and went to work on a hard one. She just used her bike helmet and some stick sandals, mostly because she's a badass. Obviously the lowering is the hardest part of getting use to top roping and she was no different. Once she got into the position she understood and did well. She actually fell onto the rope once, so we got that over with..

There was a nice family there staying at Lake Mary nearby and invited Rozzi back over to swim with the kids. We ended the day in a canoe and sailing a little dingy.

We are open to suggestions for nearby places to learn the ropes, maybe ones that are easier climbing and not so crowded.

Awesome! I love the rope color coordinated with her outfit. Did you already have that, or was that by her special request (the rope, not the clothes)?

Just to throw out my (admittedly limited) experience with introducing young kids to climbing, slab seems like it makes sense to start them on because of the low angle, but finding holds and feet, or trusting friction, can be subtle. Highly featured face with obvious things to pull on and stand on often goes better, even if it's a bit steeper.
