Jeff - cool!!! - thanks for the stoke.!!

What date was the Birds of Fire (Chiefshead) picture taken. I hope not recently . . .

If you don't mind sharing the specific location of the bivy picture, would be curious to know. Of course many of us have our secret bivy locations we don't want to put out on the internet - understand if you prefer to stay mum.

12a on Spearhead - pretty damn hard! Good work!!

Not a recent photo of Chiefs Head! That was after an early September storm a few years back.

The bivy is in glacier gorge but I don't want to give out the details on the intraweb!!

I sent you a PM with some specifics on how to find the bivy. I've used that bivy many times and it's one of my favorite spots to hang out. I've done 31 technical ascents of spearhead, so I know that area pretty well :)

I'm not near a scanner,
In the March/April 1986 Rock & Ice, there is a great segment on the Diamond, with a Mini-guide to "Longs Peak Free Climbs" by Roger Briggs, & Eric Guokas, (rip)

The. June 1994 issue of Climbing is home to the classic piece
Written by Jeff Achey, "Longs Strange Trip" with great pictures and a
Logistics break-down, and a poster pic, topo.

I have my eye set on the Diamond later this year.

I passed a chance by in 1981 to get on it, and I don't think waiting another 34 years would help my chances.

Two weeks ago. VVVVVVVV

Thanks for the photos. Great place with superb rock quality. Have bivied a few times back in that Glacier Gorge in more than one nice spot. The base of Longs is a bit more challenging, but there.

June was nice.

A lot more moisture in the air now.

Early season got squeezed pretty hard between the leftover snow and the rains coming in. Get up early people!

Hey Edge,

Don't put it off! It gets harder every year.

I wish that I was out in your neck of the woods; although it is perfect in Wolfeboro, as well. I remember flying right over the Diamond, and regret that I never climbed it.

I spent a lot of time in RMNP back in the day. First climbed on Lumpy in1967. The J Crack. We used to be able to parking lot bivy below Twin Owls.

Went back to the J Crack with Chris Landry to practice a hanging bivy for our first trip up the Diamond in '68 I think. D7 via North Chimney. Of course we almost got chopped on NC. Then Curving Vine in '69.

In 70/71 Chris and I got the idea to do an enchainment of sorts and climbed Overhang Dihedral to the Yellow Wall. That was fun, got hit with a big snow storm half way up but finished the route. 5 days up there. Lot 'o snow for Aug but then again you are at 13 to 14 thousand feet.

Over the years climbed it several more times. The last being '78 with Michael Kennedy, Pervertical Sanctuary. By then the Chasm Lake Shelter was gone and the wall was getting new routes and a lot of traffic relative to the solitude of the late sixties and early seventies. We used to go up in winter for ice and skiing. I can say looking back I got more total Alpine experience in the Park than any where else. My last ever climb there was Crack of Fear with Steve Kentz. RMNP, what a place!

Awesome stories Steve!
You can still find adventure and solitude but not like back then.
I remember training at horsetooth (a bouldering area) in the 70's for an
Attempt on D7. I never made that attempt, two broken ankles at Lumpy
Stopped that dream for awhile! I have managed 14 other trips up the
Big D and every one has been incredible.

^ wow those views of the pervertical sanctuary make me want to run off and solo something like Derek Hersey. At least, it looks like the snow has mostly melted off the final part of the Longs Peak trail.

I was just up on Longs Peak yesterday, doing a hike up the Loft Couloir. Here are some pictures I took of fabulous rock along the way - it has the look of being unclimbed but who knows?
