Thoughts? Reccomendations? What is best for an active climber who does the odd wet canyon?

Two votes for Lifeproof case over here - Aya and Tom both have them and Tom says he loves his.
I have a Magpul case for mine. it's not waterproof but only runs $10 and it's made by a company here in Boulder. I'm pretty good about knot dropping my phone but I have a couple times.

I have had otterbox in the past... Lifeproof Fre is much lower profile and easier to get on and off. Probably slightly less shockproof, but so far so good.

Lifeprrof case disintegrated on me. So far the otterbox is holding up much better and doesn't obscure the camera like the lifeproof.

I had one on my droid for 3 years...dropped it & cracked the case corner, but the phone continued to work fine.
Just got an iPhone 6 last week, and got another otterbox for it...got the 'Symmetry' this time, as it's a little less bulky. We'll see how it goes....
(I also purchased the AppleCare policy, which has damage replacement coverage. Better coverage than the phone service's.)

I've been using a Lifeproof on a 5S for about two years.
Lifeproof makes the lightest, thinnest case that meets the MILSPEC shock and waterproof requirements. The Otterbox is several times heavier and maybe 50% thicker.
The case itself is excellent, but the accessories all suffer from the same design flaw in the attachment of the cradle to the underlying, clip, bike mount etc.
Nothing that can't be fixed with a little Seamgrip. For what they charge that shouldn't be required.

Lifeprrof case disintegrated on me.
I had that same problem with a case for my 4. Lasted for about a year before it started to fray. I wasn't hard on that case either. For $75 I expected much more durability. And, it wasn't truly waterproof.
This was two years ago. Maybe they've gotten better? Unfortunately, and surprisingly, they don't seem to have much competition.

I had a Otterbox Defender for my G3 iPhone.
It exceeded my expectations. Perfect case. The phone looked like brand new three years later when it quit working. I wasn't careful with it either.
So I got another one to go with the new 4s phone. It's not as good as the earlier version. Its problem is there are several "vents" open for sound quality or something. These vents let in dirt. Fast. It's embarrassing to pull out the phone to show someone a picture or something, and there's a layer of dust between the screen and screen protector, even though I just cleaned the damn thing that morning.
Now I'm looking for a case that's water-tight with the backbone of an Otterbox.

I'm in this market too. Recently switched to the iPhone 6 for the fantastic camera.
I got the leather wallet which is nice for town usage.
Looking for a good minimalistic case that is grippy not slippy so I can do selfies on the third pitch of Whodunnit? without dropping it.

This is why I ask questions here! I had never heard of the catalyst case and now that is the one I'm clearly leaning toward.
I fumbled around my new, slippery, six out of pockets, hundreds of feet off the deck yesterday, and I don't want to do that any more!

I don't know if it's still as popular, but a couple of years ago flash drives with detachable (mini Fastex buckle)were popular trade show give a ways. no one in the office wanted the lanyards and I collected a bunch of them. Put them on knives, keys and phone and gave away several to climbing partners that had been subjected to the hole in the pocket disappearing car key disaster.
I was really glad I had one attached to the handlebars when the bike mount assploded from the G forces associated with hitting some railroad tracks at about 20 mph.
Just for the hell of it I measured my wife's Otterbox i5 181 grams and 0.63 thick. No lanyard attachment point.
The Lifebox i5S is 147 grams and 0.45 thick with a lanyard attachment point.
The Catalyst looks like it's comparable to the Lifeproof.

iPhones can't catch a break.
Todays's disaster is a text message that crashes the message app,
causing the phone to reboot(respring?) making it unusable for messages.
The owner does not have to do anything. It'll crash in your pocket
and you won't even know.
Couple fixes. Best is have a working phone send a MMS picture to bump the
'bad' text out of first place in the rendering engine of the f'ed up iphone.
Send this text at your peril (line breaks are important):
effective.

Lifeproof. Completely waterproof - I've taken calls in the shower, dunked it in a pitcher of a beer, etc. Eventually the rubber will fail around the edges on the front, and you can just replace that front panel. Only real gripe is the headphone adapter jack and the narrow slot for the bottom port, but these are no big deal to work around. LifeProof all the way. Just don't accidentally buy a counterfeit.

It doesn't meet the OP's waterproof requirement, but I have been happy with the Thule Atmos X3 I have on my 6 plus. It provides strong drop protection and "grippiness" in a minimalist package. I added a Go Pro style adhesive tether mount so I can attach a retractable lanyard for situations when there is a high risk of dropping, loss or theft.

I went with the catalyst, btw. Very low profile, waterproof and has a lanyard!
