Unwin Lodge is a great place to use as a base for a few weeks in the Aoraki/Mt. Cook National Park.

Ski planes and helicopters can be somewhat reasonably priced if you are able to share the cost with a sightseeing tour that stops near the likes of Kelman Hut.

When the weather is too poor for going above the snow line, Cragging can be had on the Sebastapol Bluffs on the village rim. There's also a bit of bouldering near the monument to climbers who have died in the park. The YHA has a big selection of movies to watch. There is also a mini undercover bouldering wall behind where Alpine Guides use to be based. And the Hermitage staff gym is pretty good too.

If coming from abroad. Getting groceries in Christchurch was once way better than buying in Twizel. But Twizel seems to be improving each time I visit.
