I was climbing up at Dale's Camp in the Buttermilks last week and witnessed some odd helicopter shenanigans. Hopefully someone will know what the hell was going on...
So this helicopter came flying in and descended to maybe 10m from the ground between Dale's camp and the Buttermilks main area (near the stream crossing where we had parked our car). It flushed a bunch of deer up, then pursued them one by one. We could hear what sounded like gunshots coming from the helicopter. This seemed especially odd given that the helicopter was flying so close to parked cars, tents, and climbers.
I'm not sure if it was a deer culling program (couldn't find anything online indicating this is going on in the area), some kind of tagging program, or just some idiots psyched on deer carnage. Regardless, this seemed a pretty poor choice of location to start shooting from a helicopter.
Anyone know what the deal was?

Next week they'll be culling surplus boulderers at the Milks.
It's an idea whose time has finally come!

also, they use net guns for capture, so it is very likely that the shots you heard were not actual firearms.
(although there is nothing illegal or necessarily unsafe about shooting guns out there. You may often hear shots at the Buttermilk Boulders if it is hunting season for grouse, quail, deer, etc.)

Thanks for the responses! Good to know I won't have to hide under the boulders next time the helicopters come flying by.
