Um? The impending apocalypse of exploding population running smack into the ecological limits. Hard to dissect when the options are frack water or dying of thirst.

There is only one environmental problem.

An aggressively invasive non-indigenous species has displaced many indigenous species to the detriment of the ecosystem as a whole. When it has run it's course, it will toxify the environment past the point of it's ability to adapt to it. Only when it is fully dead, can the biosphere truly start to rebuild.

Sorry if some pedophile, or incense waver told you differently.

“C’mon man, go for it! You’ve got it!”
“No! Left hand up first! Get the finger lock then step up the right foot. Do the spinorama, clip and yer done.”
“Hey.. Keep the rope tight, I don’t want to have to do that part again.”
“This is so rad! I can’t believe I did that!”
“Damn, I did this before no problem. These shoes suck!”
“No worries man, I’ve got you!”

Yeah, and growing up climbing-by-the-dots only to be gobsmacked by the utter unworldliness of it all their first time on a line with no chalk (or tape) - I mean, how exactly the f*#k do people even do it?

As stated above - human population is the pretty much the only environmental problem that really matters over the long haul.

Re: Overpopulation.

I have been on this bandwagon for 50 years, and I think it underlies most environmental problems.

That said, I think most people do not appreciate what has happened, which is a DRAMATIC drop in fertility rates worldwide, where the average number of children/woman has dropped from about 6 to less than 3.

This translates into a plateau of the number of children at about the current number of 2 billion. The projected number in 50 years......is 2 billion.

Here is a great 10 minute TED talk on why this is, and the documentation:

The facts do tend to prove we are an invasive detriment to the balance of things.
Where can we make the most beneficial changes? China limit, no more births in unsustainable regions? Who would be the arbitrator ?

For climbing prolly the climate change. Ice and moutain stuff will be pretty dangerous and maybe not even form alot of the years.

For rock stuff, the seasons will be different, and some of the desert stuff may not see hard routes done because the temp is never low enough. Then everyboy tries to go where conditions are good, and trample all over the alpine and destroy it.

As a person though concerned about a point of no return on the warming. But maybe there is a mass die off before from disease ro crop failing or war over what is left of the food or water.

#1. Rampant human f*#king leading to widespread human f*#king-up.

The immediate problem seems to lie in nature's stinginess here lately.

Stupidity and ballessness.

In the end we all die.. So sorta I don't worry much about it.. Only sad thing is we don't all die together so.. due to stupidity and ballessness lots more will have to cry about it than are at all necessary.

The planet itself? the environment itself?.. will carry on.

Climbers as a group tend to lean toward the Tree Hugger end of the enviro-awareness spectrum, until someone tries to take away something we want to climb on. Then it's war on frogs, war on falcons, and war on the biologists, bird enthusiasts, etc. involved with the taking away. Suddenly, these so-called "experts" become in our minds, stupid and malicious.

Heaven forbid some silly frogs or non-endangered falcons should get a win.

The fishing is NOT good at Lower Merced Pass Lake! Lower Merced Pass Lake is Yellow-Legged Frog territory. We ran into USGS scientists who were at Upper Merced Pass Lake to study the frogs. Frog lovers - enjoy! Fish Lovers move on.

I'm relieved. When I read this thread title I thought the OP was saying that climbers are the Number One Environmental Concern, rather than asking what we saw as the biggest concern.

After reading the 39 preceding posts, I think Jean Paul Sartre got it right in Huit Clos:

L'enfer c'est les autres.

Yes, we have met the enemy and he is us.

That said, it still bugs me when otherwise ethical friends eat non-sustainable sushi only to use the excuse that because they don't have kids they are not part of the problem.

My main environmental concern is for us parents' children. The hypocrisy of parents' children complaining about other parents' children - that's just part of who we human parents' children are. The rest of the environment is number two on my list.
