Here's an update from my end as of June 18th.

We are planning on City of Rocks, nights of Sunday June 21 - Thursday June 25, checkout Friday June 26. We have the same camp spot as last year, at Twin Sisters, reserved (Twin Sisters Group Camp).

Our campground is somewhat short on level tent spots, but has lots of parking, a Deluxe shitter, 2 picnic tables, & a nice firepit.

No cellphone or internet access, & no water, except what we bring in, & no garbage service.

Camping expenses. I won’t know exactly until I get a final head count by night, but I will be asking for about $17.50 per camper for 5 nights, or $3.50 per night.

We have attendees sponsoring dinners, with others adding on H'ordeuvres & fine beverages before, or with the meal. Donations are accepted to help defray expenses.

Currently we are thinking:
1. Pat's turkey chili, green salad, bread Sunday night Sponsored by Jim, Angela, Jack & Pat.
2. Riblet & salads, bread. Fritz, Heidi & helpers
3. Spaghetti, green salad, bread & likely grilled Italian sausage. Mark & helpers.
4. Wayno & Masha & helpers gourmet meal Carne Asada
5. Taco & Tamale night, Fritz, Heidi & helpers.

Firewood! Last year we had too much firewood. Heidi & I will bring a bunch of our “free” wood & 11worth has committed to bringing some wood too. Please don’t spend your hard-earned money on firewood----------instead----spend it on fine wines, beer, & great H’ordeuvres to share.

We'd love to see you again? Let me know your thoughts?

Notes:

1. The no small children & no pets policy worked so well, we are doing that again too.
2. If you plan on attending, post here if you want your name on ST as an attendee, or contact me, if you would like to be anonymous?
3. Campsite costs will be shared and donations accepted for food & all campers are expected to help with the work load.
4. We do welcome diversity & young & fun climbers!

Namaste,
Fritz

There are likely nearby campsites available, but you need to get off your ass and reserve them in advance.

Here is a link: http://www.reserveamerica.com/ Look for City of Rocks National Reserve, Idaho. As of 5/10 there are zero out of 47 campspots left at City of Rocks for nights of June 21-25.

The same search also show Castle Rocks State Park with 8 sites available.
Their Smoky Mountain camp offers deluxe camping with showers, cell & internet connectivity at reasonable prices. On the map of Smoky Mt. camp, the blue sites are still available. Of those available, #2 would be best for tent camping & 27 - 28 are not at all suitable for tent camping & lack shade.

Looking forward to it folks. I can't hardly restrain myself.

As you already know, I'LL BE THERE! I may fly in and stay in town (Almo) at the motel so that others can fight over the camping sites. I might elect to stay in the big campground complete with Internet and hot showers if I decide to drive out. Flying limits my weight severely, but the time saved is worth that disadvantage.

Masha and I are going to try and make it. I don't think Boris will be around that long. If we go, we will be good for one of the meals. As Fritz knows, I am no longer a chef due to major job burnout but I do still enjoy cooking for people. Hopefully, my feet will be fine and I can hike and climb. I don't remember what it is called but that large crag across the valley as you enter the park looks like something I would at least want to hike out to if not actually climb. Looking forward to some good times.

I wasn't sure what the camping situation was so I reserved one of those camp sites you mentioned up thread. So there should be plenty of "over flow" room. They seem to be fussy about car restrictions saying only one to a campsite.

I'll pick up anyone ALONG THE WAY. I'm NOT doing a Canadian detour. Sorry. That is likely to be Santa Cruz to Idaho. Could be Moab to Idaho...Won't know for sure which route (root) until later spring.

Susan: Re your mention of one car to a campsite. I just called COR & the current rules are: Maximum of 8 people, 2 tents, 2 vehicles for $12.72 a night + a $10.60 reservation fee in their regular campsites.

Smoky Mountain camp with showers, cell phone, internet is a $10.60 reservation fee & $22.00 to $27.00 a night.

Extra cars are not a factor in the Twin Sisters Group Camp. There the fee is a $26.50 reservation fee and $3.18 per person per night. Roughly speaking, with 30 people for 5 nights = $3.50 per person per night.

Steve! That would be great. Can you use your influence to get Jeff Lowe & Connie to attend & give a showing of Metanoia too? We'll pay for a motel room in Almo for them. They almost attended, back when Jeff was still living in Ogden.

Thanks Fritz. When I put in 2 cars in the reservation on line form it kicked it back. So I just defaulted to 1 figuring I could plead later.
I have to call them anyway because, ahem, I'm eligible for senior discount which I guess can only be arranged by phone.

So anyway if folks are looking for space I obviously have some!

I barely got a spot reserved so don't dither getting the last few available spaces for the long week. Assuming that I can line up partners in SLC for the venture I plan on being out there for the full nine days.

I usually try and do some anchor work while climbing in the City and replace old chain sandwich set ups with something better at the end of the day. Brad Schilling the COR ranger appreciates the help as long as you are in touch with him about the specifics and have his approval to do the work. He also provides the hardware that they want to see left in place.

I'm thinking of getting the same site I had last year until Thursday and then possibly the group site for the last night or so. Steve, did you book a site already? if so, which one? This year I am going to take my time going and coming. That much driving needs to be enjoyed. I am also thinking of going into the Okanagan and visiting Phil G. and then work my way east and then south. All this thinking. Time is a wonderful thing when it is on your side.

Nuts again. There used to be a "dispersed" camping site near Smoky Mountain campground. Supposedly, it is up a road that goes through the Equistrian area of Smoky Mountain. I have never checked it out, but I haven't heard anything about it being closed.

On the WeighmyRack blogsite on City of Rocks, there is a description of another Free Camping place. http://blog.weighmyrack.com/the-low-down-on-climbing-at-city-of-rocks-idaho/

Another "free" area is on Forest Service turf, high above the Breadloaves on a continuation of the road that goes up to campsites 62-64. It's a long, steep, and airy drive to campspots that might well be snow-covered in late June.

Ron, one note on dogs is: park rule require them to be kept on leash.

My brother just booked campsite #1, across the road, for the 20-23rd. This frees up a bit of space early in the week.

PM me for space swap coordination if you need it, early arrival, etc.

Last year the reservations seemed to book up throughout the area in advance, but come down to the middle of the week there was plenty of open campsites.

We are once again planning on City of Rocks, nights of Sunday June 21 - Thursday June 25, checkout Friday June 26. We have the same camp spot as last year, at Twin Sisters, reserved (Twin Sisters Group Camp).

Of course, if you and or several folks want to sponsor a meal, just let me know? It appears Wayno & Masha might be talked into doing a meal too and Jack T. & Pat showed willingness as well.

Currently we are thinking:
1. Roast Chicken, green salad, bread.

Hello, Ranger Kristen here.
There is no longer a fee for an extra vehicle at a campsite in the City of Rocks.
However; the rules are
2 tents, 2 cars, 8 people per site MAX.
We don't get bent out of shape if there is a 3rd car as long as it is not parked on the vegetation, blocking another campers designated spot, blocking a trailhead or blocking a road.

If you are planning to do work at the City this summer PLEASE get in touch with Ranger Shilling ASAP!

Look forward to talking with you all this summer!

Near the shindig, I think there's a route or two that could use some anchor help. The Smell on BFD has poor anchors (your lead...ha ha) I dimly recall.

On Outhouse aka Suncup Slab, I think Brad yanked the old button heads bolts on "Sh#t in the Woods." I haven't gotton around to replace them...so, if you're in the neighborhood...

Fritz, I'm trying to get my young friend Darrin to go. He's just back from Thailand where he did a segment of the TV show "Naked and Afraid."
He is also an excellent outdoor cook specializing in unusual game. He does a succulent marmot and claims to do the best porcupine ever....he has it fry in it's own internal juices.
Should he be able to come I propose that in true Idaho tradition we have him do a roadkill dinner of marmot and porcupine.

Jim: Heidi, Mark, & I met Darrin at your Indian Creek work-camp gathering. We'd all love to have him attend.

Favorite Idaho roadkill dishes include campfire-roasted "hair-on" skunk, since roadkill porcupine present a thorny problem. "Hair-on" skunk is a traditional regional delicacy that, if properly prepared, provides an unforgetable repast. It does pair well with more robust Italian red wines.

Roadkill rockchucks aren't a problem, although they start their summer hibernation by mid-June. I could save this head that I found 50 feet from our house yesterday? It would likely stew-up real tasty.

ROASTED PORCUPINE

Leave porcupine whole. (After skinning and evisceration!). Chill meat to remove all fat. Parboil in simmering water to cover for 15 minutes with 1 teaspoon of baking soda.

Drain. Make your favorite stuffing. Stuff the porcupine and place on roasting pan. Cover with lid or foil. Bake at 325 degrees F. until meat is done, one to five hours, depending on the size of the porcupine.

Any old red will do.

Roadkill is a figure of speech for the type of meat involved. I am fully expecting humanely butchered, if not kosher, marmot and porcupine. Additionally, I think that the sides should be appropriate:

My weekly post is more than "Bump." I'll be bringing a case of Bolla Italian wine, probably Bardolino. I drove and/or rode past the winery bottling facility in Trento several times last Fall.

Wayno-I haven't found a store here with Marzemino.

Good luck with that, Roger. I have rarely seen any in stores. Maybe a good small wine shop that has a lot of old-world stuff. But worry not, I can get some In fact, I'll get a couple. Did you try any Teroldego or Schiava or Lagrein when you were there? And what about those whites?

As many of you know, I am now retired and living on a budget. I'm sorry to report that budget constraints only allow me to bring one bottle of Italian wine to share at our get-together.

Jeroboam! Sweet. At least it looks like one. 5 liters? I have had that wine before. It is a sangiovese, cab, merlot blend that sees some new oak. Meant to be enjoyed young, fruity, nicely rich. Perfect for pizza, pasta, or just a bunch of friends. sluurrp. Banfi is a large and well respected producer of quality wines at all price levels. Good score, Fritz.

Last year I brought a bunch of wine that we never even touched. Probably because everyone else brought wines, too. Oh well, better than running out and having to go buy some crap in the middle of nowhere. Just for shits and giggles, let's start a wine list...???

Wayno-

I believe I brought a half case of 1.5 Liter Banfi Pinot Noir last year. None of it was wasted. Also had some Bardolino and Valpolicella. Those were all Trentino varieties, I believe?

Banfi is mostly in Tuscany, I think. I could be wrong, as they may have stuff going on in other regions. Valpolicella is more of a Veneto wine and Bardalino is a lighter wine made from the same grapes from the area west of the south end of Lake Garda. To the North of Garda is the Trentino Region. There might be some wines with those grapes from Trentino, but they can't call it Bardolino unless it comes from a specific locality.

There will be a Quiz tomorrow. 8) Use a #2 pencil please.

strictly adheres to the Chianti Classico DOCG laws.

They are not what they used to be. Now they can use them fancy French grapes in there like Cabernet and Merlot. Probably a good move, as wine sales are more international. There are actually five Chianti zones, Classico being the most recognized.

OK, I'll shut up about wine now.

Here's a better map of SLC to Almo. Go north on I-15 to I-84, & a couple miles past Snowville exit, turn west onto Hwy 30, then a few miles later turn north on Hwy 42.

and the shortcut after going through Stevell is shown in this map.

Careful going fast through Naf. Its one area that has a lower posted speed limit and does have some some LEO activity. RKM can attest to that...!

There's also a couple of corners where the gravel gets a bit big that are banked funny to be careful with, and, the visibility to oncoming traffic is reduced. Bummer to hit those at high speed, so to speak. Had friends roll a car there and go through a fence...

Strevell doesn't have much left. When I first started climbing in the City in the mid-80s there was a few structures still standing. Most are gone now.

If you're coming from the south, you can take the first exit into Snowville. Go into "town" (don't blink...ha ha). Pick up a fresh cinnamon roll at Mollies, then go west on the main road which is Highway 30. Stay the course and go straight (due west). It'll turn into Highway 42 which then swings north into Idaho and becomes Highway 81. You'll hit the turnoff to Naf in around a mile into Idaho is all. Its signed on the left.

Alternatively, one could take the second Snowville exit but it might be prudent to have your tank topped off in Snowville anyhow so the first exit is best for that. And that cinnamon roll. Or, a set of scrambled eggs to go. And a cinnamon roll.

Says someone who's driven that way over 100 times... ha ha...

Remember, Rock City in Almo for a superb beer selection and they have wine, even in a box, as well. Pizza too. Yum.

Here's an updated attendance list.

Here's an update from my end.

We are once again planning on City of Rocks, nights of Sunday June 21 - Thursday June 25, checkout Friday June 26. We have the same camp spot as last year, at Twin Sisters, reserved (Twin Sisters Group Camp).

Our campground is somewhat short on level tent spots, but has lots of parking, a Deluxe shitter, 2 picnic tables, & a nice firepit. No cellphone or internet access, & no water, except what we bring in, & no garbage service.

Heidi, Mark Mason, & I are making contingency plans to feed attendees, with a little more help from attendees. We are currently planning on sponsoring meals for 3 nights, with others adding on H'ordeuvres & fine beverages before, or with the meal.

Of course, if you and or several folks want to sponsor a meal, just let me know? It appears Wayno & Masha might be talked into doing a meal too and Jack T. & Pat showed willingness as well.

Currently we are thinking:
1. Roast Chicken, green salad, bread.
2. Riblet & tamale night, green salad, rice.
3. Spaghetti, green salad, bread.

I was heading south from COR to SLC once in the GTO. I had the radar detector
on, duh, as I was doing the ton. I saw a line of cars some miles ahead coming
down into the large valley I was descending into. Their tightness alerted
me so I slowed to 90. He was unmarked so I didn't ID him until the last
second when the alarm went off and I locked 'em up. With smoke billowing
from the wheel wells I saw him look at his gun as we passed. I punched it
cause I knew the Utah border wasn't far. I hit the big curve doing well
north of a ton and made it to the border and slowed down to 80.

We've survived some long river trips with box wines. I agree that Black Box & Bota Box wines are drinkable and pass the hangover test. (You should not have a hangover after drinking decent wine)

Here's a link to a blind chianti taste test where an almost Chianti Box wine won against some pretty good competition.

While not called a Chianti, this box is pretty close with Sangiovese as the primary grape supplemented by the Malvasia Nera and Ciliegiolo grapes.

Wayno & all: I loved every Wayno meal last year at the COR event. However, Heidi's & my favorite was Wayno's Italian sausages. We had a recent discussion about your old custom sausage maker in Seattle and your difficulty in obtaining said sausages.

If you can bring 60 or so of those sausages, the Idaho contingent will pay for them, and grill them, & provide some type of local buns, condements, etc.

We are off to SE Utah for a week of canyoneering & I promised to be a little more active poster after Cinco de Mayo.

The sad news is: Mouse & AK Trad & companion are not able to attend. The good news is: we will now likely have room for those who are staying in adjacent campsites, but were not able to book Thursday night.

We were rudely thunderstormed out on Sunday, when our last day's hike ended up with a one-mile uphill off-trail power-hike through a raging lightning storm with several strikes within a mile of us. (I felt very alive!) We did see a lot of great Anasazi ruins during the week.

It looks as though Masha and I will do Carne Asada again seeing as it is always a hit. I can also help others plan and execute meals. I have skills. We can bring several coolers and some cooking gear.

Jim, I am going to try and get some "local" Idaho grass fed beef for the Carne part. You can bring fresh veggies for salsa and guacamole. I will post more about that.

Fritz, is Mark going to bring that four burner stove he had last time? Is anyone going to bring a "hot" grilling setup? Those propane jobs last time were a little weak. I would rather just use the fire and a grate. How are you going to roast the chicken? Grill? I can get as much of that Italian sausage as you need, just let me know. I'm sure we will discuss a lot of this on the phone at some point.

Looking good at this end and I can't wait for the festivities. It looks as though we will have a nice group. Steve Grossman and I are going to see Phil Gleason tomorrow and we are going to try to get him interested in going. He would be a nice addition to our group.

Cheers, everyone!

Hi Fritz!

So Anita is definetly not coming. Since Vegasclimber is my roadtrip partner it would be nice if we could squeeze him into camp. Alternatively maybe i can bunk with him and Brokedown.

-spend it on fine wines, beer, & great H’ordeuvres to share.
I would be happy to contribute some of this stuff, and food for dinner, let me know what we need.

Since Travis and I are both flying in, it will be difficult for us to bring much in the way of cooking accessories, but i would love to contribute however I can.

I have booked my ticket out friday night, so i am no longer attempting to stay the weekend.

I am very much looking forward to this!!

Wayno: Per your questions, here's an equipment list for what Heidi, Mark, & I are bringing.

Same 4 burner propane stove as last year, along with it's owners Jerry & Angie. They also have a grill attachment that fits two of the 4 burners. It isn't perfect, but works far better than the little propane grills.

Same large charcoal "River grill" as last year.

Mark will again bring his large rain-fly that saved dinner on our rain day and his deluxe handwashing system, that I really wish our campers would start utilizing more.

He will also bring his river dish-washing system, so Heidi won't have to take dirty dishes down to her motel room for washing.

We do deeply appreciate your offer to share your cooking expertise, but we also don't want to see you doing anywhere close to the amount of work you suffered last year.

The very-large roast chickens are purchased pre-roasted & one chicken with salad & bread will feed 6 average climbers. We will cut them in half & rewarm them.

Big Mike! Vegasclimber is switched out for Anita as a camp guest, with the understanding that he is going to have to find another place for our too-full Thursday night.

Mike, I'm sure we will have room at our camp just as last time. You are welcome to join us. The last night will be the crux, but I'm sure we'll figure something out.

Fritz, thirty-six or so sausages per box. We can get them frozen and they will stay pretty cold in a cooler for several days and good to eat for about a week. And yes, wash your hands, people, the number one way to prevent food-born illness. courtesy of your local county health dept. Lol.

We do deeply appreciate your offer to share your cooking expertise, but we also don't want to see you doing anywhere close to the amount of work you suffered last year.

Don't worry, I plan on going climbing and I didn't suffer because of the work, but rather my damned feet. They feel good now and I have a score to settle with some of the coolest granite that I have ever seen.

Marmots and ground squirrels.......Idaho bush meat at its finest. Recent studies show that 40% of Idahoans supplement their usual diet of Big Macs and Cheetos with bush meat and road kill.

Health officials in Idaho are giving free meat thermometers to grocery stores to distribute to their customers with instructions to cook bush meat to an internal temperature of 165 degrees. It is hoped this will ward off any possible Ebola outbreaks. Officials are quite happy with their initiative stating that the program has proved very effective with the 56% in Idaho who are literate.

Roadkill is preferable for most residents of the Gem State so that they can save there ammo for local Aryan Militia turkey shoots.

Camping expenses. I won’t know exactly until I get a final head count by night, but I will be asking for about $17.00 per camper for 5 nights, or $3.50 per night.

We have attendees sponsoring dinners, with others adding on H'ordeuvres & fine beverages before, or with the meal. Donations are accepted to help defray expenses.

Currently we are thinking:
1. Roast Chicken, green salad, bread Sunday night Sponsored by Jim, Angela, Jack & Pat.
2. Riblet & salads, rice.

Sorry to all potential late-comers, but the group camp is still full for the duration & the nearby camp folks are going to have to squeeze in with us, or camp elsewhere on Thursday night.

At this time, I think we are right at the campsite limit, but ok for Thursday night. Decent tent-sites may well be a problem, which is why we will have wine & beer to ease our pains.

On the more positive side!

After buying some more throw-away plates last week, I discovered the cache of paper plates & plastic utensils donated last year, that I took home. I think we have plenty of stuff to eat on & with, but we will also have a "river-trip" dishwashing system sponsored by Mark this year, if you want to eat off & with your own beloved plates & utensils.

The weather forecast shows sunny weather with slightly above average temperatures. It would seem that early starts in cooler temperatures will be necessary to assure that a respectable number of pitches will be climbed by this virtuoso gathering.

Unfortunately, this means that nights of unbridled rivalry accompanied by copious amounts of adult beverages need to be drastically curtailed.

It might be prudent to adjust inventories to include a higher proportion of non alcoholi!c, high electrolyte beverages.

The local Mormons will be unaware, but grateful, that global warming, a concept they don't endorse, will have brought an invading horde of ,mostly secular, climbers more in line with them.

I am assuming that all the folks Fritz mentioned in the group camp and the other sites are going to be in on the meals. Some folks are coming in later but that shouldn't matter. I'm planning on feeding 35 for my dinner, that way no-one goes hungry and I will have leftovers. I will know my costs and go from there. How are the other meal planners going to roll?

Wayno! Based on my most current info, which includes folks that will be camping with us, but following their own food wants, I suspect 25 - 27 each night.

I have not interacted with 11thworth & his friend, or Nutagain & his 2 teens, or Steve G. about whether they would like us to share in our cooperative dinner plan. No problem on my end to add them, but I need to know if they want to share our dinners and share kitchen work, appetizers, fine wines, & good beer?

That said: our two sponsored meals are set up for 25 - 27 folks and we hope for shared appetizers.

I still encourage folks attending to offer up appetizers----and fine wines or good beer, and to please help with our meals (after washing their hands at Mark Mason's foot-pump & soap hand wash system) ------and to also help every night with clean-up!

Big Mike! The Utah State Liquor stores have a good selection of beers, including higher alcohol ones. The two best are in SLC. One is just off 3300 South next to a REI store at 3245 E 3300 S. The other is downtown at 255 S. 300 E., Salt Lake City.

Here's a link to state liquor stores.

Got home mid-day today & have had a busy afternoon unloading a pick-up load of group & personal gear.

My condolences to those that missed the "get-together" & much praise for all attendees. It was a great group that climbed hard, partied hard, & most importantly: shared in providing yummy food & beverages & helped at attending to camp chores.

I had not done a day of technical climbing so far this year, so I paced myself, but enjoyed a number of pleasant 5.4-5.8 routes. On Thursday Mark & I "Geezered-Up", left camp at 8:00 A.M. & climbed a well-bolted 4 pitch 5.7 classic named, Theatre of Shadows. Since it was mostly my idea, I was selected to be the "geeze-rope-gun."

The climb entails a long hike, but the views of "The City" are rewarding.

I'm limping today, but it was fun, as was the whole darn gathering. Great people, great weather, & great attitudes all around.

And fine beverages.

Mark brought a foot-pumped hand-washing system that he uses on multi-day river trips. Once our dirty-handed climbers got used to washing with it, the system was tolerated by most & even liked by some.

Unfortunately, Monday morning, I discovered a drowned juvenile Packrat in the five-gallon bucket that holds clean water for the system. I fished it out with two pieces of wood and placed it on a rock near the kitchen, so all in camp could bid it farewell & give best wishes for whatever afterlife it might have in that big rat-nest in the sky.

However, it was horribly disfigured with what looked like large tumors on its back. After somewhat distant study by those in camp with biological knowledge, or strong stomachs, it was decided I should take it to Park HQ for their biologist to look at & perhaps share with us what hideous disease it was carrying. I held open a garbage bag while Brokedown used two sticks to drop the packrat in. I then drove it to park HQ and after leaving contact information, returned to camp for climbing. Mark shut down the hand-wash system & dumped the water a good distance from camp.

That afternoon I stopped by park HQ and was informed the tumors were Botfly Larva & no threat to humans, although it was suggested we might want to add some chlorine to the hand-wash system water. We also wrapped the clean water bucket in a garbage sack to keep out other diseased & suicidal creatures of the night.

Botfly Larva! And I was worrying it had bubonic plague.

Darwin. Daytime highs ranged from the high 70's F. to a max of 88 F. on Thursday. Bear in mind, that most all the day is less warm than those highs.

Mark & I had sun on the last two leads of Theatre of Shadows on Thursday & for the long descent, but it wasn't too hot.

After the climb, Mark & I drove to the top of nearby 9,000 + ft. Mt. Harrison to cool down. We explored the views and sorted our rack before leaving the windy 60 f. summit.

Darwin, if you think it's bizarrely hot now, just wait til next weekend. Temps are forecast to be about 95 both at Index and Squamish. And staying home will be no better, because Seattle will be just as hot.

Which doesn't mean you can't climb, just that you have to be a little careful about picking the right routes (and not caring about dying of heat stroke). I posted a story a while back about Nature visiting the PNW and going climbing with us on a day that was that hot. There was puknig involved, but We all survived.

After the sun hit the rock we scattered to other places. Unfortunately our group picked the still in the sun Bloody Fingers area, which was also quite crowded with what we later learned was the Las Vegas Climbing Club.

The City was quite busy last week, possibly due to the very favorable weather.

Since, my hard work from this morning, got buried by a bunch of savages... I felt i should pull a thisjustin special.....

Awesome video Rodger! Thanks for that.

Hahahaha Spider! The one shot i wished i'd taken.. Thank you!

Ok Rodger i've been working on getting these done since yesterday.

After getting spanked at practice rock the day before... I talked Travis into hitting up Decadent Wall the next morning.

This was what i saw when i unzipped the tent.

These Cottontail Bunnies were common sights at camp.

Here are a few pics from the City. This little dude was quite curious. We put out a little capful of the spring water from the Breadloaves. In a few minutes he was chugging down and then he rolled in the dirt and hopped up on this big flat rock in our campsite and did some poses for us. He even waited while Masha fetched the camera.

Hahaha Rodger! Patience my friend.

After lunch and a town siesta, Travis wanted to get up Bath Rock and I told him i would be happy to hold his rope.

The belay and climbing were conveniently in the shade, which was nice since it was already 87f or so in the shade... Lol

Travis heading up tree start.

Have you got a piece in yet??

Ignore the extra arms and legs.

Travis wanted to rap off this thing but I wasn't feeling too confident about that...

Each formation you summit offers a unique view in the city.

Wayno, The swastika-like symbol on the building in Thermopolis comes from many Native American tribes and represents the four directions and the four seasons.

Did you visit the free hot spring baths there? The state maintains a bathhouse for the hot mineral springs that is open to anyone for free in honor of a treaty with the Shoshone and Arapahoe.

Hey Mark, too bad you couldn't make it to COR. I did know that symbol was used by several cultures for a very long time before the Nazis got a hold of it and ruined it's meaning, but it was still strange to see it on that old building. Yes, I did go into the hot springs, but not the ones in the park. I had a room at a motel in town that had an RV park north of town with their own spring. It was over a 100 that day but we still soaked. Very refreshing when you get out, it seems cooler. Thermopolis is a real interesting place. I actually liked the area.

I'll contribute some flower pics from COR (actually Castle Rock State Park)

And a critter trying to steal our breakfast:

And on the way out, we took the very scenic path. Here's a border road between Idaho and Utah. Granite Pass is in the background, a major waypoint on the trail to California in the pioneer days.

We went probably 60+ miles on this dirt road before hitting a paved road in Utah, and then went about a hundred miles before reaching Montello, NV as the first spot for gas. Definitely need to form the habit of filling up anywhere you can, even if you're only down a quarter tank, when traveling through some parts of the country.

I somehow managed to not take any pics of people at the gathering, so these will have to do from my side!

Mike-

My curiosity overwhelms me; how DID you get down? The Rebar Route? That eyebolt looks great to me, since that's the standard rappel point anchor in the Dolomites; cemented in eyebolts. They are, normally, utterly bombproof... ??????

Rodger - we did indeed take the rebar route. Travis let me know after we got down that that is indeed standard practice in Germany too. I just couldn't rap my head around going off a single point. I suppose when i'm forced to do so, i will just have to do it.

Wayno- did ya get some new bait? ;)

Wednesday we headed out with the group for a Donini rest day.

Mark on the first lead of Theatre of Shadows on Thursday. I'm now recovered from leading that well-bolted 4 pitch 5.7. I may even have enjoyed it. I confess, even I was skipping clipping the numerous bolts.

It turns out you can do two 30 meter rappels to exit Theatre of Shadows. It is only slighly tricky to catch the chains at the bottom of the first of two overhanging rappels.

The 2.5 billion year old granite on Theatre of Shadows has some huge phenocrysts of feldspar. Some in the below photo are over one-inch long.

Mike-

How was the Rebar Route down? I've been kinda' put off by downclimbs ever since 2010 and my little accident. I still have infrequent bouts of Post Concussive Syndrome, especially when looking down; intermittent touches of vertigo. That makes me want to rappel when ever possible (good anchors, easy rope pull, etc.).

Added it "edit.": I would have rapped on that eyebolt in a heartbeat. I'll bet it was drilled in at least 4" and probably 6" before being cemented.

Downclimb with or without the rebar ladder off Bath rock isn't bad either way.

If you were a bit wobby, you could always just hang onto the ladder.

Brian: I have no doubt the Cowboy Route has been soloed in flip-flops. It hurts me to think of post-cocktail hour night-time flip-flop ascents, but I agree the rebar route off is fun.

Brokedown! The rebar route is easier and safer than the "walk-off" route from Decadent Wall, that we enjoyed on a November evening a few years back.

Kristen, it was nice to meet you. Masha and I really enjoyed listening to your wealth of info about the local history. Somebody needs to keep Donini in line! LOL. You made a nice addition to our wide ranging group of misfits. I don't get around as much as I would like but COR seems to have a unique and productive relationship with the user groups there that I find quite refreshing.

Rodger, since you are so interested in the rebar route, here is a shot of the crux of it.

Pretty mellow really.

Ok, here are some shots from our last climbing day.

11worth joined us for our last day at Castle Rock. We were hoping Big Time would be in the shade still, if we got an early start, but instead it was in the blazing sun.

Looking up at Little Time

11worth and Vegasclimber racking up.

I wasn't too stoked on frying in the sun, so i let the boys climb and i took some photos.

Looking back at Almo

11worth and Vegasclimber on route.

The flowers were in abundance.

We were all pretty beat and the heat was getting to us, so we hit the parking lot.
