Well I guess I committed to this so here it goes. Hope to have a raffle, t-shirts, people show up, etc.

Gunna be at the Big Sleep area, because it's the most road and camp friendly area.
Big Sleep is perfect for long easy routes, Crocodile is one of the best cragging spots on the ridge, Eagle Beaks is near, world class bouldering is within a thirty minute hike. Something for everyone.

Definitely want to do a potluck/BBQ on Saturday night. Will have horse shoes set up.

Can somebody direct me who to contact for ASCA?

Hope to see many of you there.

Justin Ross

Hi Justin, I can't get to COR this year so I definitely wAnt to make this gathering.

Could you post a diagram of the areas you are talking about with their relation to the nearest town?

How far from the nearest CA route is the camping area? What are the roads like to get in there? Passenger car? All wheel drive? High clearance?

I'm sure I could find all this out on Mtn Project but it would be good to have all the info in one place.

Phylp...I was at the exact area a few months ago. Easy access with low clearance passenger car if you take it slow for the last couple of hundred yards. Under an hour from Oakhurst. Super primitive camping in the open with your car parked on absolutely flat granite slabs.

Phyl! Woohoo, now it's official. If you are coming from LA, you will take highway 41 north towards Yosemite. Fresno would be a good place to get ice, meat, or any perishables. About 30 minutes north a Fresno, you'll see a sign for O'Neils and North Fork, also a scenic byway sign and the first traffic light for awhile. Take a right and this road will take you to North Fork.
We do have a gas station and a grocery store, but don't recommend the store for food or supplies other than beer. There are two routes from here.
Hopefully the guidebook author won't copyright my ass for this.
I believe Jim did the second pic, Cascadel directions.
The cool thing about the first way is there is a spring at the bottom of the dirt road to fill up water. Also this route is easier on vehicles, but both are mellow.
It's in a National Forest so camping is free and is not a campground setting. Hopefully they will still allow campfires, but this winter has been dismal, so I wouldn't be surprised if they have fire restrictions already.

Justin - don't be dissing the gals at the Shell Station - if they get to know you and it's not too busy and you tip well - they can cook up fresh fried chicken and broasted potatoes that are damn tasty.

Especially if you wash them down with a sixer of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

Ha RickyD, I prefer the deep fried Chevron food. Just avoid North Fork Market, unless you like greenish colored meat at premium prices.

True limping.

Quite the statement Donini, it's definitely unique.

Spider and dirt, will get a better idea if you guys are coming for sure later.

As munge points out, there are no amenities at this site. Whiskey Falls Campground is about 20 minutes away and has a bathroom and designated campsites, so that is an option for people who like a bathroom.

Here are the 2 wheel drive directions to the camping from the guidebook, typed out:

Brown’s Meadow Rd (7S02) directions:

Allow one hour from North Fork.

From North Fork, take the Mammoth Pool Rd (aka Road 225 aka Minarets Rd) east out of town and past the old mill, heading towards Mammoth Pools. At about 22-23 miles, before the pullout for Mile High Overlook, you pass Rock Creek Campground on the right. Three-quarters of a mile past the campground and before the road actually crosses Rock Creek, a major intersection on your left is dirt road 7S02 to Brown’s Meadow.

Fifty yards past the intersection there is a drinking water spring on the left.

Turn left on 7S02 and follow it about 7 miles until you can see Big Sleep Dome on the right. A small dirt road on the right leads to the right (south) side of Big Sleep Dome drainage and Shuteye Pass trail. Keep your eyes peeled because the turn, in the middle of a right-hand curve, is easy to miss if you are driving fast. This final short road is a bit rocky so drive carefully to avoid flats.

A large open area to your right on the way is the main camping area.

There is one little ten foot section maybe a quarter mile from the Big Sleep camping area. It isn't bad at all, just go slow through it. I will do some work on that section to make it even better.

Camping area is around 7200' so should escape some of the heat. Wind always picks up at 11:00am.

Right on Charlie D, have always enjoyed your contributions here and look forward to meeting you.

As far as the temperature, it might get into the low 90's. Getting the approaches done early is the big thing. Most of the area's crags are between 7200-8000' and the wind is always enjoyable during the summer.
The actual camping area is exposed and not a lot of shade, but no reason to hang there during the day.

Bummer Handcrack. Would it help if I posted some pics before? Haha, no worries, you'll make it up here soon enough.

The temperatures are looking great. Should be 60s-70s, winds pick up around noon daily so bring a jacket and bright colors for pics. Also, bring water. There is a spring at the bottom of Rock Creek rd and should be some filterable water up there, but no guarantees.

Here are the directions again, from the guidebook:

It's hit or miss, but like it looks easy says, there are spots. Rock creek campground not really.

Mindy and I took our pop-up trailer to the camp and posted the signs on the road.
So almost a mile past the Rock Creek Campground on Mammoth Pools Rd or Forest 81 you'll come to the fork below. Take the left.
Just past the fork is a spring that has very good water, no filtering required.
Follow the tacos
It is 7.0 miles to the turn for the Big Sleep camping area from the first sign/start of the left fork.
There is a sign past this fork, stay right.
Last turn and camp just up this rd. Go slow for lower clearance vehicles.
X marks the spot.

If you look at the last photo (two photos of the same spot actually, the last two photos) this just in posted of the camping location, you will just go rolling in there with the pick up 4x hollering hellos and woots, having no idea that you are actually destroying these:

Please be aware of the environment. It's a beautiful fragile place. There are many more flowers and artifacts in the area.

on the same slab you are driving/camping on, others have been before you for hundreds of years

Limping Crab sure is tall!

I talked to him this morning, and he had gotten into camp just about ten or so last night.

Flip Flop picked me up yesterday a.m., we drove to North Fork, he found a message from a gal named Erika at his place. As I expected, breathing at that altitude was a trial, being active was out of the question, and I'd like to thank all the folks who took the time to help me out right now.

I'd like also to borrow a card from neebee if she'd pick one out and post it for me...May I?

First time at Shuteye and I must say it's more confirmation that the Sierra is by far the best granite climbing range on planet earth! Even the more obscure spots are probably better than the main destination in any other state :)

Had a great time and fun meeting everyone and climbing even though I didn't get there until late Saturday night. But I made it in time to get a serenade from Graham Doe on one of his beautiful Hapi steel hand drums.

Met and climbed with Joey on Crocodile Dome on Sunday and had a blast. I also did my first ever sport climb, that stuff is fun!

Limping Crab sure is tall!

That's why I like slab, I can reach past all those blank parts. Didn't seem to help much with the sport climbing though :/

Thanks Justin, everyone sounded like they enjoyed themselves and the taco signs were really helpful for those of us new to the area and driving in at night.

I forgot my camera so just picture perfect granite and smiling people, that sums it up.

Mouse,

I wasn't there so thanks for the photos and thanks to OP(t.j.i) for the plan. Sorry the altitude got to you Mouse, but I personally love "climbing" trips even when I can't climb. I've never been to Shuteye, and I so want to see it and climb there. Sounds like a great area.

It's a treat seeing a photo of Mark. Man, I can't remember the last time I saw him. Maybe at Humboldt State in '77? Matt Pollock and I were going to use "going to see Mark Chapman" as an excuse to get in the Park when we got in during the '95 government shutdown. We just drove through the unstaffed entrance without being stopped or questioned, though. I'm sorry we didn't "have" to visit Mark, as Matt died in the commercial fishing accident 3 weeks later.

It would be great to meet you Mouse. I don't think we ever did back in the day, but you knew Luke?

Freeman? I married a Freeman! He was much better than I so he had to go climb with Werner instead. I'm sure he'd have preferred climbing with me, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Besides, Werner probably turned out the better for having had to climb with Luke.

We haven't met, I'm VIRTUALLY certain.

You'd love Shuteye and vicinity, man.

Thanks to TJI it was a fun event. I agree "Danny" does not look like a typical climber but he acts like a typical climber from the era in which I began climbing. I owe a big thanks to "Danny" because he has encouraged me to spend more time climbing (and drinking) and less time mountain biking (which is far less fun then climbing or drinking).

Haha Ludwig. Mouse that's Kenny Rose, we call him The Legend. One of my climbing mentors and the first person to take us climbing about 15 years ago at Trapper Dome. He has done a ton of stuff around here and if you've ever climbed in Big Creek you've climbed his routes. Kerchoff Dome should be renamed Rose Dome, ha.

Limpingcrab, first time sport climbing? Dude no matter how many baths you take you'll never be clean again, haha. Thanks for coming up, I will definitely make it down to SEKI in the near future.

Darwin, I think you can use the Chapman excuse to visit Shuteye now. Talking with a legend was one of the highlights for me and meeting his buddy Jay as well. They were solid to watch climb too. Will post pics later.

WHen my plans for going this weekend fell through, I knew I was missing something special. Thanks to all who shared pictures and stories from the trip.

Just wanted to say miss Matt and Bruce. Two of my all time favorite guys. Hard to believe we lost them both...hope you are well.

Chappy, one of my favorite memories of my bouldering days at Indian Rock was in 1972 or '73, when Matt, Bruce and I were bouldering down in the Pit, and a couple of cop cars drove up and their occupants got out with revolvers drawn. They looked at us and said "You don't look like the guys we're looking for, but you need to come out to the street with your hands up." (Berekely police were obviously enlightened and user-friendly by then - in contrast to the People's Park days). When we got out to the street, they asked if we'd seen anyone around there threatening bystanders with a rifle. We hadn't, but we decided it was time to end the bouldering session.

Thanks for reminding me of those two. I still miss them.

chappy's pictures from above that didn't post
mark, (and tiki-jer) here's what i think i know about posting photos to this site in particular:

once a photo makes it's way to the ST server it gets assigned a unique identifier
consisting of six numerals and the next photo to be loaded will be that number plus one.

that photo and the server's name for it (those six digits) won't change.
we can call up that photo to be inserted into our post by typing in that string of digits and as long
as it is followed up immediately by the closing bracket ] and preceded by [photoid= all continuous, like:

the server will know we didn't mean a "word" but rather will insert the photo named that number.
any deviation except outside the brackets won't post a pic, it's just seen and printed out as text.

the photo uploader that walks you though the steps inserts that character string automagicly, BUT HERE'S THE RUB:

after the first photo, the CURSOR returns to, (places itself in) the AMIDST THE STRING! like this: [photo(CURSOR)id=418359]
and that CAUSES the PROBLEM. (#bugfix??) the blinking cursor has to be removed to anywhere outside the brackets
or it will malform the "special magic image message" and put the new character string right INSIDE the previous one ... NO ES BUENO ...

so since your photo's numbers were visible as plain text, i just copied [photoid=4183
six times and went back and closed each with 59] and then 60] and 61] etc.
which is what you could do to put the pictures into your post!

and i'll delete

ps: call sis ;^)

Chappy, Thanks for making it, hope to see you soon.

Susu, really cool of you and John to show up. I know you guys are always busy on some project, but the amount of work you guys have done in the area, a Shuteye gathering wouldn't be the same.

Rincon, great pics. Was also a pleasure to meet you and the whole Stoney crew. You guys kick ass. Let's get a brew sometime at Southgate.

Tiki, So good to see you, it's been way to long. Thanks for making it.

JE, Next year hopefully you are free.

Steve, you gotta get a ride with Jim next year.

Daphne, really cool meeting and talking with you, thanks for coming and I'm thinking June next year so we can have a fire.

Some raffle pics courtesy of Cori. Guyman was kind enough to part with his Gramicci Lycra. Cole was beyond happy to end up with them.

Climberdude won the first of the two books Mouse donated. O Ranger, about the first NP Ranger from Yellowstone.

We had four books and only four people didn't have the book, so it was perfect. Big thanks to Grahm for the donations.

Jay was probably thinking, Whoa is that Sharma?

You can tell how serious this raffle was by my expression.

Tiki won one of the Dawn Hart bowls. Dawn is a local artist and teaches at Community Colleges in the Fresno area. She is also one of Mindy's best friends. Thanks Dawn, very cool to donate.

Hans making sure.

And the proud winner of a free resole from Barry's Resoles. Barry really wanted to make the event, but is still recovering from a hip replacement. Heal up Barry and thanks for the donation.

Carrie already had the Yosemite Big Walls book, so she gave it up for re-raffle. Very cool of her, especially considering it is signed by Tommy Caldwell and CMac. Thanks for the donation Chris!

She did not regift the Bigfoot donated by Cam Donnahoo however.

Climberdude winner of the Big Walls.

Rob (thanks Carrie) winning another Outdoor Gear Lab Review item from CMac.

Kenny Rose keeps his Bud Light close to his heart as he wins another cool book from Mouse, The Ansel Adams autobiography.

Sorry Frumy, I had to post this.

Guyman was a crackup and so glad to meet him and that he brought up the Stoney Crew.

Guy winning a plant and vase from Dawn Hart.

Luke takes the 9.1 Sterling from CMac. Having just done 50+ miles of hiking to climb, it found the perfect home. Awesome meeting you Culture Shock.

Mucci won another Outdoor Lab Review item. A kelty sleeping pad.

Tiki was the big winner. Can't see but this was the 9.9 Maxim 70. I was happy to hand it to an old friend.

Thanks Neebee! And thanks to everyone who donated items or money to the raffle.

Haha! Yep, the Big Wall book - though very cool - needed a better home. The beer found a perfect one, it's in my fridge chilling and waiting for a good excuse to share it with a friend!

PS: I'm so glad the moment with Frumy and the chair was captured - this seriously happens every. single. time! Something about G_Gnome's chairs are out to get him! Or that's what he'd say anyway. ;)

Phyl, thanks again for the painting. Really weird coincidence being you painted it on my Birthday and numbered it 32. Definitely a highlight meeting you finally. Anytime you need a place to stay let us know.

Marlow, cross the Sea to see next year!

Mucci, thanks for making the long drive, hoping the best for your ankle. Definitely hard to be on the sidelines.

Jan, really big words about Shuteye from you. Friday night at the Stoney camp was too good. Your guys stories and heckling and laughing at each other is a climber's universal. Loved the Guyman suddenly joining in from his tent. Hopefully see you around, let me know if you need anything.

Tiki, thanks man, I'll be back.

Carrie, haha I didn't realize Frumy is sabotaged so often.

I got a ton of climbing pics still to load, but gunna be awhile.

That was a blast. Y'all are awesome. Justin and Mindy were definitely the hosts with the mosts. You two throw a good party.

Too many highlights but here are three:

1. Riding with Mouse

2. The "Post Valhalla Stoked Aura" of Vitally and Luke (edit.).(Angel Wings) (heal up V.)

3. Jay-" I'm pretty sure that we met back in the day"

Brook- " I'm not sure. It's been awhile. You remind me of Shaggy..."

Jay- " I am Shaggy!"

I ended up with an extra Shuteye Guide? Mouse?

Thanks Y'all.

I think you should save it, Flip Flop. Tell, though, is it Brook or Brooke?

And I was thanking "Danny" when I wanted to thank "Kenny" for that ride into North Fork. My ignorance of names of those I just met has got to be wiped out and the best way is to make plans to return, if possible, next year.

This was an awesome, just-the-right-size gathering and I'm very sorry I felt so out of it. I'd have loved to jam and jive much more with all of you fine, mellow folks.

I did achieve my main goal, which was to meet Chappy.

And Guyman, I am complimented by you and your desire to meet me. So there.

Now I'm working to see, is it in the realm of possibility to move up to North Fork. Still. As I've fantasized before on The Flames.

Flip Flop, we need to talk. Call me, please.

Looking forward to your climbing shots, Justin!

Mouse,it's alright to call Kenny Danny he's a great guy by any name. It was fun to briefly meet you and a few others. If my wife's not in Poland next year maybe I can leave my crazy dog behind and hang out more and meet a few more folks. I was really glad to see Mike A. again after many years.
I'd like to hire Justin as a meteorolgical consultant for my vacation plans in the future as the weather was as good as any July day can be in this area and he picked it a few month's in advance. Justin when should I do a ski vacation next year? I'll pay you after I ski a bunch of powder.

Hi, all. The Shuteye taco trip was a blast. Driving up from LA on a Thursday evening after work is the way to go. None of the usual stop n go traffic you get on Friday slowed us down and we soon found ourselves at the best Taco Stand in Tulare, (thanks Yelp)
The place didn’t look like much but with grandma back in the kitchen, cooking, you can bet the Tacos were first class and they were.
We made good time and got to Rincons home in Corsegold and were joined by Cole who lives in Josh and Carrie who made the trip from SLO and Mark who lives in Bishop and we stayed up till 2am swilling beer and catching up. We all agreed that the longest drive was Mark, who had to drive for 5 hours in the snow over Tioga pass, in July!!!!!

On Friday morning we headed up to the “Big Sleep” to go get a spot and get some climbing done. On the way we stopped in at a Deli, located in a market in Oakhurst, and I ordered a “Breakfast Burrito”, this proved to be a fateful mistake.

When we arrived at Big Sleep, Justin Ross had his trailer all set up. We had our pick of spots and got a good place for our wagon train of cars. We set up camp, talked with Justin and got some good information on the nearest climbing ....
“The Runnells” became the chosen objective....”A 20 minute hike” according to Justin.
Well I never made it, about 18 minutes into this hike the pressure that had been building in my gut overwhelmed the pop off valve and I blew big chunks all over the pristine wilderness..... “you guys go ahead and climb, I am going down to camp” I said. I staggered down to camp, with a few more gut retching sessions along the way I fell into my tent and lapsed into unconsciousness. I would only emerge when the pop off valve was ready to blow again.... about every two hours!

The climbers returned at sundown, I was feeling a bit better by now and even ate some of the Angel Hair pasta Jan cooked. By now the campground was filling up and an impromptu “campfire session” had started up about 15 feet from my tent..... Vitaliy, Luke, Justin and unknown others were telling stories, lies and spreading slander .... “Stoney Style”. I felt right at home and would interject comments to the unseen as needed. This continued long into the night.

Saturday morning, I felt a bit better. But not good enuf to go climbing. I watched and was quite envious of all the climbers who walked by as they headed up to Shuteye Pass and more of the fabulous climbing that is up there. I was starting to feel better and spent the day eating bits of food and stretching. I could hear climbers yelling “off belay”, “rope” and “yesssss!!!!!!!” this echoed down from all the cliffs.... lots of fun was going on.

By the time the sun was starting to set and the real party was about to start I felt good enuf to drink a beer and I was digging through the ice chest looking for a cold one, that’s where I was when the group photo went down.
The raffle was cool, I really wanted that 70m 9.1 cord.... Luke won it and that is for the best. I am sure Luke and Vitaliy will put that rope to the test over the next few seasons. I won a succulent plant in a really cool pot... those are the sort of plants I have in my backyard and it fits in nicely. I was able to chat with Mouse from Merced, who was the senior climber at the event and Mark Chapman. I haven’t spoken with him in like 40 years!!!! It was 1975, camp four all over again. It was really nice to meet Mike A, Gerry, Doughnutnational, climberdude, Daphne, Matt and a whole bunch of really cool people whose names escape me.

These events are really good to have, not only did we raise some money for ASCA but the climbing community became a little tighter as avatars became faces with names.
I really hope that this becomes an annual event.

On Sunday I was able to go and climb. We packed up and went to the Melting Wall. What fun! I was finally able to grab some of that fabulous stone with my own two hands and let me tell you, It was better than I could ever imagine.

Monday was spent at the “Swimming Hole Wall” my friends were pretty wiped out after all the hiking and climbing and needed a rest day. I wanted more, but that will be another day.

Thanks again to Justin and Mindy for doing the heavy lifting, I appreciate your efforts and look forward to more Shuteye trips.

Blitzo was also there to party with all of US.

Guyman, I had no idea you'd been sick...when you shook hands it was like a vise, man!

Flip Flop advised me via phone call the other day that someone's Shuteye Guide ended up in his truck. He has his own and would like to repatriate the extra to its rightful owner. Send him a PM if you are missing yours.

I'd like to hear someone's taken Flip Flop up on his offer.

He's a decent climber, is a barrel of fun, and knows his way around somewhat.

You ought to try to hook up with him (and keep him out of the Buckhorn). :0)

Tons of killer stone at that Shuteye place...

How about next year? As soon as the 60 feet of snow we are hopping for this year melts off....

Vitaliy..... Have you ever herd of the "RINCON"? Fab winter climbing, down by Kernville. The 1.5 hour hike scares off most but looking at your history you would probably call that "bumper craging." .....

Ha, Justin! These are a little late. But glad to see them.

Chappy and J. were to our right that day, we were on Afternoon Nap. Daphne and Urizen switched leads and I had them clip me off at each belay with our second rope (1/2 rope), which I toprope-soloed while they were climbing. It was super fun. We rapped down quickly and easily, no snags anywhere.

I hope we do this again next summer. That was a good location, plenty more to climb there.
