"Extreme sports is a context for implicit Whiteness".
Kevin B. MacDonald, Professor of Psychology, Cal State University, Long Beach

A few years ago, I met privately with Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel. The main topic of our discussion was actually astronomy, but Mr. Wiesel also made a few comments about what he saw as a rising level of ethnic intolerance and hateful rhetoric after a period of relative calm following the civil rights activism of the 1960s and 1970s. After my meeting with Wiesel I am much more cognizant of contemporary happenings in the twisted world of the haters and the intolerant. One dim bulb I found among the ranks of the haters is a tenured faculty member at California State University - Long Beach: Psychology Professor Kevin B. MacDonald. Among his many low achievements, MacDonald recently co-founded a new political party for white nationalists called the American Freedom Party (originally called the American Third Position).

One of MacDonald's AFP co-founders is LA-based attorney William D. Johnson. Johnson drafted an amendment to the U.S. constitution which nullifies much of the Bill of Rights (and other amendments), mandates the expulsion of all non- whites from the United States, and specifies the return of all Native Americans to the confines of an 1800s-style reservation system.

Detailed profiles of MacDonald and Johnson can be found on the Southern Poverty Law Center's web site:

http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/intelligence-files/profiles/kevin-macdonald

http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/intelligence-files/profiles/william-daniel-johnson

So, what does all this have to do with Caldwell and Jorgesons' recent ascent of the Dawn Wall? Well, I thought I'd seen it all, but then I saw a recent article penned by Prof. MacDonald which praises their achievement as a shining example of white supremacy in the areas of "...energy, inventiveness, exploration, and creativity."

http://www.theoccidentalobserver.net/2015/01/caldwell-and-joregeson-two-white-guys-conquer-el-capitan/

In a similar article, MacDonald identifies wingsuit flier Jeb Corliss, and legendary surfer Laird Hamilton as examples of two guys who do stuff in which (apparently) only whites can truly excel.

http://www.theoccidentalobserver.net/2011/09/extreme-sports-as-a-context-of-implicit-whiteness/

The absurdity of MacDonald's assertions, and of the assertions of others of his ilk, is almost laughable were it not for the fact that they come from well-educated professors, attorneys, and many other (supposedly) respectable people from respectable institutions and backgrounds. And there are a lot more MacDonalds and Johnsons out there than many of us would imagine.

What could be done in the climbing community to refute what people like Kevin MacDonald are saying? I think we need to be more explicit in identifying and showcasing the diversity in our community. Next time you pick up a copy of your favorite climbing magazine, look at the (human) subjects of the articles, and the sponsored athletes featured in the advertisements; I think there is a lot that can be done to provide a more complete picture of who we are.

That's my two bits worth. OK - a lot more than two bits worth.

Back in the '80s in Colorado there was a black climber in Boulder that had the same name as me. My friends occasionally called me "The White One", the difference being that he was climbing 5.13 (top grade at the time) while I was bumbling around on 10 and 11's. I guess I was a disgrace to the white race.

The next thing you know this McDonald guy will be telling us that black climbers do poorly in the Himalaya because when they go above 20,000' their lips explode.

It is ironic that the only moribund race is that of racists themselves. In a few hundred years everyone will be mutts and racists won't know whether to shlt or go blind (and should likely do both).

Man, there really is a whole 'nother world out there. Like "Roller Pigeons". WTF?! Blacks tend to be too smart to become climbers (or wingsuiters either), but if they were to take it up, I don't doubt that we'd be seeing records broken. Including one day ascents of Tommy and Kevins new masterpiece.

Ten-four on that, @toker. One of my favorite work-out hikes near my home in LA blasts up the first 1,200 vertical feet in just over 1 mile. The trailhead is located in a super-affluent, white-dominant part of town, but I'd say 70-80% of the the hikers I see on that trail are non-white folk who likely traveled some distance to get there, from much less affluent parts of the city.

The first thing I thought of when I read that dickwad MacDonald's article was watching my friend (sur-named Ramirez) lead this little gem in J.Tree, at 10pm one night, using a headlamp.

That McDonald guy sounds nuts! It's crazy that he has enough of a brain to be a university professor.

I think we need to be more explicit in identifying and showcasing the diversity in our community.
I think all of the pictures of white people in the magazines you speak of pretty much show how diverse climbing is. i.e. it's not diverse so it would be tough to showcase?

In a few hundred years everyone will be mutts and racists won't know whether to shlt or go blind (and should likely do both).
People said this a few hundred years ago, I wonder if it will ever be true? I'd guess not but it's an interesting idea.

They are using images without credit, and likely without permission. If anyone knows the photographers of the images used in that story, they should contact them so photogs can issue take downs.

It saddens me, knowing that there are still, in these day, those out there who believe in white superiority. But it gladdens my heart just a little to know they are butting their heads up against a wall, that at SOME point, their children(if they don't already know dad's a whack job) will have to accept that "the better man"(as they believe they are) didn't win.

Between undergrad at Berkeley, and graduate and law school at UCLA, I've run across some off-the-wall profs, but nothing like this, thank God.

My second quarter in grad school at UCLA, we had part II of the graduate courses in macroeconomic theory. Our prof the first quarter referred to our prof the second quarter as "Crazy Earl." His theories were, to say the least, singular, but responding to them forced us to learn a very great deal. In contrast, MacDonald strikes me as a prof whose views offer nothing positive, even in responding. They're just hateful and stupid. Oh well, even universities make mistakes.

Why is it necessary to somehow make an effort to show case ethnic diversity in climbing ? That would be like trying to imply that the NBA is not 80% black or that Latin Americans don't excel in baseball, etc. It is what it is. Not sure why different groups of people like some activities over others. The Professor is like the rest of us entitled to his opinion but we should not validate it by trying to correct a false premise. I think Jessie Owens pretty much squashed the "White Supremacy" in sports theory with 4 Gold Medals in the1936 Berlin Olympics. Guess the Professor didn't get the memo. His loss.

That is my point DMT.

40,000 years ago all humans were black. Then some moved north into europe where having sensitivity to the sun allowed clothed or wintered humans to still produce enough vitamin D, so in time skins lightened.

^Does it say that in the Bible?

I've read that the white portion of the Earth was the result of colonizaiotn from space. Might have been George Lincoln Rockwell, the guy who invented space travel. No wonder real white folks never get the flu.

Viral And Bacterial Immunity

It’s a common trope in Science that aliens, having never encountered Earth bacteria before, will succumb to simple diseases which they have no immunity to. Just look at the pilgrims and conquistadors, and the havoc smallpox and typhus wreaked on unexposed native populations. But conquistadors and Aztecs were both human. According to Seth Shostak, senior engineer from SETI, bacteria are limited to the life forms they are biochemically related to.

Our germs have evolved to survive on our unique DNA. Even viruses and bacterial infections that infect one species on our planet will only rarely spread to another. Dogs don’t routinely get the ‘flu, for example. Any alien life form that invaded earth will likely be immune to earthly diseases, so don’t expect a War of the Worlds solution.

@tami -- I don't see any evidence of racial discrimination in the magazines. I think we as climbers are for the most part a tolerant and inviting bunch. Having said that, I just flipped through the latest issue of R&I (not the Dawn Wall edition) and can't say I saw a single latino/latina for sure, or Asian climber; this is a lot different than my experience at the local crags, and in Yosemite for that matter. Regarding my own experience, this may be due at least in part to where I live.

I abhor the idea of some magazine editor saying to his/her staff that they need to publish X-number of features with ethnic group Y. What I'm saying is that our community, ethnically speaking, is substantially bigger than you will likely see represented in an average magazine issue. I'd like to see magazine editors and advertisers look farther, that's all.

Diversity isn't represented in the mags ( ever read the hilarious stuff on this forum from a group of gay climbers in the US south - their name escapes me just now )

It's the crowd that puts on the Homoclimbtastic festival.

And I think therein lies the key to dealing with the crazy professor. I think Tommy C & Kevin J should reach out to the guy and do an interview. An interview for which they showed up holding hands and telling the prof they'd like him to come to their wedding.

It would be interesting to see how fast he backtracked on what stellar examples of white supremacy they were.

BLUE you really can't see the forest for the trees ..you are blissfully unaware of the world around you. Hell you arn't even aware that you might be unaware.

Adventures require excess time and money.

It's easy to be adventurous when you belong to the richest culture in the world. Riches that in the beginning and perhaps today came about because that culture was the only one morally corrupt enough to convince itself it had a right to take anything it wanted. Almost every inch of this nation was stolen and we kidnapped, exiled and murdered millions for it.

Manifest destiny eh? Nice excuse to rob and kill and still sleep at night.

I don't apologize for it since I have nothing to do with it and have opposed our continued wars for control of any valuable resource, but I am very well aware of it.

I am aware of other cultures within this nation, ones that don't have the centuries of wealth required to develop within them respect let alone traditions for wasting money and time.

What Determines Skin Color?
Skin color is determined by the amount of melanin in the skin. Melanin is a pigment produced by specialized cells called melanocytes. People with dark skin have more melanin.
How much melanin your skin has is mainly a matter of your genetic makeup. Sunlight exposure, hormones, skin damage, and exposure to certain chemicals can also affect melanin production.
Changes in skin color will often resolve themselves. For instance, tans fade when the amount of direct exposure to sunlight is reduced. But over time, certain discolorations, such as "age" spots or "liver" spots, become more or less permanent.

Something you might have a feel for if you were not so entrenched in just one culture. I suspect much will change in the next 100 years or so. Prosperity is spreading and has a fair chance to continue to do so. More young people in other cultures will have the opportunity to do these things and better. Amazing experiences for certain types of personality. Those personalities are by no means unusually racially distributed.

A story:

Several years ago I was hiking up to climb Whitney via the Mountaineer's route and was camped below Boy Scout Lake. I was making breakfast, considering whether the headache I was suffering would calm down enough to continue on the climb, when suddenly

I heard the distinct sounds of a group of Spanish speaking hikers. I looked over and saw a group of 6-7 Mexicans hiking up the nearby trail. Curious who they were and where they had come from I greeted them and struck up a conversation. My first impulse was to comment on their very non-outdoorsy clothing, nothing but cotton, tennis shoes, blue jeans, and light sweaters, not a bit of poly amongst them - but I held my tongue.

Turned out they were from Tijuana, had been partying in a nightclub and one of them suggested they drive up and climb Whitney. They were literally walking off their drunkedness.

I tried to act fatherly and give them some sage advice, but being teenagers, they just blew me off. They continued along their way with not a care in the world.

Hours later I was relaxing at Iceberg Lake when I saw them again, this time walking from the direction of Mt. Russell. I joked, "hey, what happened to your plan to climb Whitney?"

Their response: "Ya, we climbed it, and after descending realized we still had lots of time so we went and climbed Mt. Russell, too."

Que la chingada con la superioridad de los Blancos!

The very idea of racial "purity"- regardless of what race is supposed to be superior, is idiotic to anyone with even a rudimentary knowledge of population genetics. In that field, there is an expression called "hybrid vigor" which refers to the improved rate of survival of individuals with mixed parentage, because they are less likely to get the same messed up gene from both sides.

On the other hand, there is a notion of extensive inbreeding leading to a condition of "purity" where all the bad recessive genes are flushed out of the pool because all the offspring get the same thing from both sides and these ones die off- so the survivors are very inbred but without the negative recessive traits.

So does this mean "racially pure" is a new code-phrase for "inbred"?

When I was running track and field fifty years ago the mantra was that blacks were great at sprinting but couldn't run distance races. Then along came Kenyan and Ethiopian runners from the high lands of Eastern Africa and within a few years many top European distance runners were taking early retirement. At the present time 96 of the top 100 marathon times of all time have been turned in by runners from those countries.
Athletic performance is more a function of culture and socio economic factors than anything else. KIds who run to school everyday from their homes at 7000 ft. are going to produce good
distance runners and latinos from the barrios of Central America are going to punch their way to economic well being. Irish and then Italian boxers were very prominent during the periods when those groups were new immigrants. Now the sport is dominated by latinos and blacks.
You don't see many minorities prominent in "country club" sports like golf, yatching, swimming and gymnastics for reason obvious to anyone with half a brain.
Climbing was for years in England and the US dominated by the upper classes. Only in the last half century starting with Whillans and Brown have caucasions from the lower socio economic classes made their mark. Climbing is still a sport largely of the white middle and upper classes. Should latinos and blacks get involved in any numbers their performances would be right up there with those of white climbers.

The WASPs have been upset ever since the Roman Catholic hordes (i.e. the Irish and the Italians) began colonizing the US during the middle of the 19th century, bringing in their wake crime and gangs. But there's just no going back to 1913 segregated Jim Crow America. J. Edgar Hoover and Joe McCarthy tried their best and still failed. So did the Klan. @flipflop -- I struggled while trying to come up with a title for this thread, wanting to generate enough interest for folks to at least want to read it but not wanting it to sound like anyone is endorsing what twits like MacDonald and Johnson are trying to peddle. Bottom line is, my buttons got pushed when I saw that MacDonald, whom I'd been monitoring for years, attempted to draw a beautiful achievement like the Dawn Wall climb into his twisted world. I did hope to accomplish two things here: 1) make people aware that neo-Nazis are not always guys with shaved heads and scary tattoos -- William Johnson (the guy who wants to deport all non-whites from the US) was nearly elected to a local judgeship before being outed just days from the election by an LA Times columnist; and, 2) express my own observation that feature articles and advertisements in popular climbing magazines may not reach far enough into the diverse makeup of the climbing community. I will probably not post something like this again in a climbing forum. I'd much rather go climbing, read about climbing, and talk about climbing with people who have similar interests.

Hey thanks for your thread.

IMHO, I think that really our desire to refute it by proving that diversity does exist is well intentioned but slightly misguided. I think what we really want is for that diversity to actually exist in our sport and in wilderness appreciation more than it does, and that that would save us from having to acknowledge the reasons why that diversity doesn't exist, and how that traces back to racial injustices. For most of us, we're not comfortable just saying why do we need to show that diversity exists in (fill in the blank)?, can't we just acknowledge and accept that median white income is 13 times median black income, and that's why so many of the black guys are poor? And whether the guy who stole cigars gets killed because he's a thug or whether it's because of the white privilege of the society who the DOJ reports continues to racially target him, it's hard to say, but I trust that we'll form a belief that suits us.

So it gets expressed in different ways, the idiot you referenced being one of the extremes. If you're interested in a different take check out Black Faces, White Spaces, and maybe Post-traumatic slave disorder.

I think that humans are actually really smart, just not in the rational information processing -> belief creation way that we think we are.

It's true, whites are superior athletes. Just look at the biggest sports, like rock climbing, curling and golf. Non-whites only excel in Podunk organizations and sports like the NFL, NBA, boxing, soccer...

Should latinos and blacks get involved in any numbers their performances would be right up there with those of white climbers.

But they aren't involved. Not anywhere near their share of the general population.

Why are most "extreme" athletes white males? Especially the top competitors? It's not about physical ability. African Americans over-represent in the football, basketball, track & field and baseball... from high school to the pros. But among climbers, surfers, snowboarders, skateboarders, motocross etc., its almost all white guys. Why is that?

It'd be refreshing to see an honest discussion of this subject, where all possibilities are examined.

EdwardTroll You must have missed or misunderstood Donini's excellent post a ways back.

and Reiterating my own thoughts

It's easy to be adventurous (extreme lol hack cough bwah) when you belong to the richest culture in the world. Other cultures within this nation don't have the centuries of wealth required to develop within them respect let alone traditions for wasting money and time.

This will change and already there are some examples, but it takes time for most cultures to appreciate being stupid for nothing except personal satisfaction.

Extreme? Seriously? Still annoys me that the term got dumbed down and used on things that usually don't kill you when you mess up.

So far I know of 4 extreme sports, ski mountaineering in specific situations (where the term originated in Europe)Free solo rock climbing, base jumping/proximity flying, and record level freediving. Oh and a 5th, Reno Air races.

As far as male thing goes...I don't yet know of a culture that has built an appreciation of women being stupid for nothing except personal satisfaction.

We climbers are getting there though. Steph Davis is badass

That's strange that nobody in this thread has mentioned David Epstein book "Sport Gene".

You can find a lot of interesting facts and ideas helping to understand "Nature vs. Nurture" complexities.

As for original donini's assertion that blacks are good marathon runners when they have to run several miles a day to school, Epstein points to a fact that only a few tribes located on Rift Valley plateaus produce outstanding long distance runners. Remaining Africa is not known for abundance of marathon runners.
Similarly only people from Western Africa and their decendants produce world class sprinters.

By extension,

White Americans are too genetically flawed to;

-learn second languages
 compete in an open field
-Preserve their rights and responsibilities
-Play basketball
-Run fast
-play football (minus the token white supremacist QBs)
-field a respectable presidential candidate
Etc
Etc

There has always be Blood and soil zealots. They are now are being churned out of the Post Politically Correct working class by Fox and other conservative outlets. They are encouraged to be demagogues of Truth, science, ethics and Humanism.

Opportunistic Politicians, theologians and reactionary academics have corroborated their subjectivity, self interest and goal of retribution.

I pity the fools!

Some day maybe they’ll be as woke as I am right now. But I’ll always be woker. That’s just the way righteous ole I am.

I’ve conducted a large scale scientific study on all of humanity in my head and determined that different combinations of nature and nurture produce humans with different physical abilities and different thoughts and values and beliefs.

You can repeat that same experiment for yourself in your own head. But if you don’t get the same belief results that I got, don’t blame me, you must just be doing it wrong.

Sorry to say, righteous human believers, but we’re all doing it right. Right colored skin, and right beliefs, just look different in different people.

But spread a little of your own righteous fake news, and you might be able to affect what other people believe in ways that you prefer. That’s a survival/thrival strategy that’s been working pretty well for us humans so far, but it’s starting to show some cracks around the edges. Some of the dinosaurs got to be really big.

Rich Jones = Largo? If no, glad to see that maybe someone caught a spark. If yes, 1200 vert.in a mile, on a bum wheel, in mixed company intimates much largesque.
