it's been a few years since I drove up toward Mt Humphreys outside Bishop, but it looks like I'm heading back this summer for some climbing

I was looking at google maps and racking my memory... if I recall correctly, I once managed to push a Volvo sedan with about 4" of clearance up to about 9,000 feet, scraping the underside a fair amount, but Google Maps suggests that the road disappears at 8,200 feet

anyway, can someone familiar with the road advise on how high one can realistically push a Camry or similar up the road in typical August conditions?

The road is in way worse condition than it used to be, you probably won't even make it to the Mt. Tom trailhead turnoff (maybe 1-1.5 miles above the Buttermilks). High clearance (low-range 4x4 preferably) is pretty much required to get anywhere near the Humphreys trailhead. The old turn-around/campsite for 2wd is overgrown with zero sign of use.

On the other hand they bulldozed the final steep section to the end of the road (above the old 2wd turn-around/campsite) so that's in better shape than 5-10 years back.

Need a current update as to how far up the road is passable in a regular sedan en route to Basin Mountain/Horton Lakes trailhead. Thanks!

Been a couple months since I went up there to ski Humpheys, sounds like someone here was recently up there though.
I would't imagine a regular sedan (not a Subaru type) being too fun after the Birthday boulders parking area at the Buttermilks proper. The road is hammered.

That washout is after the Horton parking area coming from Buttermilks Rd. If you don't give a crap about the rig your driving then you might be able to make it to the aspen stand by the turnoff to Horton Lakes Trailhead. There's a lot of exposed rock and lots of smaller washouts though. If you know how to drive it's possible in a sedan. It's also probable you'll get stuck or suffer body damage trying it,

It was a tough go beyond Buttermilk for my AWD Toyota Highlander 4 years ago. After last winter it must be much worse.
Hire a packer maybe?

The road is in relatively great condition. I was able to drive a Toyota Yaris (rental) up 5.8 miles to within 50 yards of the right hand turn onto the 07S101 road at the "Horton Lks Trhd" sign, then just 15-20 mins further walk to the locked gate. I'd never driven a sedan this far.
