Many of you know Fred, High Traverse, from ST.
He recently had a cardiac arrest while in the back country and was airlifted out to Reno and immediate open heart surgery.
He's home and on the mend now and expected to have an excellent recovery.

Fred is one of the dearest and most gracious men I know on ST and I always hold he and his family close to my heart.

May be heal quickly and fully!

All our love and thoughts to you Fred.

Aw, Fred.
Here's to a different way of life from now on.

We are exactly the same age.

You don't smoke and I can't ski.
What will become of you and me?

HT gave me a lift up to Facelift last September
and is a perfect gent and a safe driver.
He also volunteered to run the Tuolumne campsite for Facelift.

Here's H and HT last fall.

oh.....WOW
(tears in my eyes)
I've been sort of taking a break from this two bit gin joynt for several weeks. It can be aggravating, enlightening and a huge time sink!
I just dropped in to see what was going down and saw this thread.

All of your greetings, photos and good wishes are awesome! SCSeagoat, I'm gonna get you for starting this thread! ;-0
I'm just rambling because I really am at a loss for words.

So here's the not so short story.
AAC Sierra Nevada section has an ice climbing weekend at the end of each January at Lost Trail Lodge/Coldstream Canyon ice cliffs.
This was my 7th trip. I'd missed the past two years and was really stoked. Even with very low snow the ice was good as it's fed from snowmelt.

Hiking up the road (always much more fun when there's enough snow for skiing or snowshoeing) with four companions on a bluebird day. Up a moderate hill I wasn't really working hard, just breaking a sweat........I felt a "squinch" in the region of my heart and slowed my pace thinking "Hmmmmmm that was odd, I've never felt anything like that before". Suddenly I felt like Dorothy being swept up into the sky in a tornado.......and down I went. Totally out.

I came to a few minutes later with Dr DK looking at me and asking my name. I was totally lucid. As if nothing had happened. TB was next to me and another DK and TL were helping with clothing to keep me warm. My chest hurt like bloody hell! Still does!! You can take it from me, chest compression CPR CAN be painful. And pain is a good indication that you're actually alive!
My heart had stopped for 2 or 3 minutes. But my breathing didn't! I had been VERY lucky!

The "team" had gotten out a cell phone call and had deployed my personal locator beacon.
Soon a CalStar helicopter showed up but flew up the canyon past us. We were on the road in a clearing in the trees but they still didn't see us! Someone ran out into a nearby clearing and got their attention.
But they still couldn't land. There's no safe place for a helicopter within a mile.
To make a long story short, soon Truckee Fire SAR showed up with backboard and emergency medical kit AND the CHP short haul chopper arrived!
I'm wide awake, yakking and joking through this all. But I sure knew I wasn't going anywhere under my own power.

The SAR team got me into a warm kevlar bag and on a backboard, and out to the clearing. The cable came down from the CHP bird, I went up and we flew the mile down to Lost Trail Lodge where the CalStar chopper had landed in the meadow. I was transferred to CalStar and flown to Renown Med Ctr in Reno.
By mid afternoon I'd had ultrasound, and an angiogram and the news that I'd be getting open heart surgery the next morning. A couple of AAC friends drove down from Lost Trail in the afternoon which was really kind, and my wife flew up from the Bay Area.
Sunday AM 4 hours or so of surgery. They took a vein out of my right leg, split my sternum and pread my chest open, hooked up the heart/lung bypass, stopped my heart, replaced two clogged heart arteries with bits of vein, restarted my heart and wired my sternum back together.
I was walking the next morning (with much nurse assistance).
A week later I was discharged.
I'm on my feet, walking about 1 1/2 mile daily (with some easy hills) with my dog and Sarah. Doing some work and feeling better every day.

I've never had any heart trouble. The only warning was that I've been abnormally short of breath after heavy exertion the past 3 or 4 months.
Very fortunately, the rest of my heart, valves, veins/arteries etc are healthy. The prognosis is more or less full recovery in 6 months.

Lessons?
You Too can have a heart attack.
Chest compression CPR DOES work for some heart attacks.
It's best to travel with friends and have emergency communications capability. If I'd been alone the crows would have found me first.
We should all learn chest compression CPR.
Life is GOOD!
and you get by with a little help from your friends.
Thank you all again for your concern, I'll keep you all posted.

I know there are a few docs on the Taco...
I wonder what they think of Lifeline Screening?
would that have given Fred any warning of what was going on?

Twice now, once last year and once about 4 years ago, I got a "Lifeline Screening" panel. They set up mobile labs around the country and for a very reasonable price (I think my last one was $125) they do a carotid artery , a - fib, abdominal aortic aneurism and peripheral arterial disease screening. If you have an HMO your doc might order some of these tests for you if you have a family history.

But I have a PPO and minimal family history so these aren't the kind of tests that would be justified to be ordered as a part of an annual physical.

Lifeline does a bunch of other tests like bone density but the other things they do I have covered through my regular health maintenance.

I asked my own Family Practice doc what she thought of it and she seemed to think it was a good thing to do once in a while. She was happy to see the good results I had on my tests.

Stoked to hear such positive things from you HT! Heal well, and get back out there.

You can take it from me, chest compression CPR CAN be painful.

As a side note, one gig I had required a yearly CPR recert among the other required training. I remember distinctly being told that the chest compressions often lead to tearing the sternum free and broken ribs.

Hello gang.
I feel as if I owe you an update so here goes.
Tomorrow will be 7 weeks from Total Arrest. I'm doing well. I've had two significant (defined as taking me out of service for more than a day) setbacks, both related to drug side effects (possibly the same one) and totally unrelated to my heart.
I stopped the Vicodin two weeks ago and the little pain I've had I can manage with OTC pain relief.
Last weekend I was very active. On Sat went to the Pinns with Sarah and two other "old geezer" friends. We hiked the High Peaks from the east via the complete Caves (the upper Caves trail was open) as the loop. 6 1/2 easy miles in 80+ temps. I broke a sweat a couple of times and took a a few rests.
Only saw a few condors, but two of them were up close and personal immature birds. Thrilling to be in a quiet section of the High Peaks trail and have them soar past at eye level 30 feet away. Eye to eye indeed!
on Sunday 3 miles cross country in the Castle Rock back country to dedicate a Very Large Redwood to a friend's memory.
Again, no sweat except for the durned tick digging into my thigh! The Blighter!

Still not allowed any upper body work as it might endanger my surgical wounds. I see my cardiologist on Tuesday and will beg her to let me start re-conditioning above my waist.

I'll be going to the AAC Pinnacles trip in mid April, perhaps I can climb something low angle or at least belay others. If not, I'll still be happy to be alive and outdoors with friends. I just hope it's not too bleeding hot.

Again thank you all for your concern and kind wishes.
On Belay and Berg Heil!!!

(at least I didn't miss out on the ski season!)

Fred! My man!

Methinks you'd be better off mellowing a bit more and not rushing things--
it's only been seven weeks.

Please take it very easy and "keep it in your pants," Tiger.

Belay that.

If I hear you've been trying to climb before it's time...
It's just too bad I can't make this rhyme.

You don't want any setbacks at this stage.

It took you by surprise once,
Just hold on to your horses--
Don't act like a big dunce
But conserve all your forces.

Why gamble?

There'll be time for climbing
Before the game is done.

Nice to hear you're UP & not down, though.

Hey nita, I'm sorry about your friends' heart attacks. I trust they your friends are doing well.

Thanks for your concern. I'm stronger every day. I do monitored cardiac rehab exercise 3X week, do lots of serious hiking every weekend and watch my diet better. Aside from still being cautioned about climbing I'm doing very well.
In fact, the deck was stacked in my favor. My overall health was/is excellent and I have no remaining heart or arterial problems after two blocked cardiac arteries were replaced. The surgeon figures these had been slowly plugging all my life.

I've got a 72 year old close friend who's had bouts with cardiac surgery and twenty years later, stents. He's still active. He trekked to Everest Base Camp a couple of years ago. Modern Medicine really is remarkable when it comes to the heart.

Now if I can just get my cardiologist to give me clearance for climbing!!!
I've got to be very careful of injuring my still mending sternum. It was cut right down the middle and then the two halves wired back together.

Have your friends seriously mend their diets, take cholesterol control drugs if prescribed and LESSEN their stress. (stress has been proven to increase cholesterol). If they can get cardiac rehab they really should. Medicare covers it.

Fred, ..Great to hear positive health news.

My friends..
70 year old female and my next door neighbor. She had two stents, a aneurism with lots of blood clots and a 4 hour surgery..She is thankful to be alive..I know a vegan diet & exercise is no problem for her.

The guy i know is only 42, and had a massive heart attack..He was a heavy smoker, makes bad food choices and no exercise...his wife told me he quit smoking...but still fights her on what he wants to eat..

Scary stuff...
Thanks for the great info..I will pass it on.

hey there say, fred...

happy to see you hear, tonight...

thank you for the nice thank you... and kind note... :)

oh my, about the chest wired back:
an older man, a dear friend, that died so many years back, well,
he HAD this surgery, perhaps nearly the same, and i was out of state then...

well, when i got back, and he was sharing about it, he said:
"they cut me open, like a chicken"

(he was a little old fashioned man, mexican-american, and 'he said' he had
seen many a chicken cut open, in his day) ...

i was so very glad he survived through all that, as, i think,
he was in his 70's at that time... :O

keep getting well,in an easy, practical and strong way... :)
and best wishes to you and the family...

Hey Fred! It was great to meet you at IC and see how well you were bouncing back. Hopefully all is still good. I've just been noticing your absence on ST since the get together.

Hey Chris.
NO worries Myte!

Been busy (trip to Atlanta and back immediately after driving 2 days to get home).
We took a detour up through Castle Valley and touristed Castleton Tower and the Fisher Towers. Got home just in time to toss all the stuff out of the car, walk Oliver, steal 6 hours sleep and tear off to the airport to fly to Atlanta.
Working my buns off on a contract project.
I see my cardiologist next week and will twist her arm a bit let me get back to climbing.
Trying to keep from sticking to the SuperTopo tarball. Hugs to Patty. The PTs at cardiac rehab couldn't believe the weird interconnecting human relationships around my existence.
Sayonara till next time.

So good to see you and Oliver. You definitely don't look like someone that so recently went through what you did! Strong man...BIG heart!
James is a dear...Great meeting him.

So 18 weeks and 6 hours ago I fell over.
Every day I pause to consider my amazing good luck.

I've gotten clearance from my cardiologist (and she checked with a cardiac surgeon) to go climbing!!
Very Carefully of course. I must be mindful of my surgical wounds, especially my possibly still mending sternum. I've had zero pains in over 3 weeks now.
I've done 3 full body gym workouts in the past month. Still doing cardiac rehab 3X week.
The great thing about the cardiac rehab is I wear a portable EKG throughout. There is always a nurse watching everyone's EKG and max heart rate on a computer. It's all recorded. I work a little harder every session and my max pulse rate has never gone over 130 which is what they figure is my max safe level. Evidence my body continues to restore itself.

This is an EXCELLENT program. (El Camino Hospital in Mt View)
I've still got 3 weeks to go before Medicare stops paying and I'll be on my own. I'm sure I'll be ready.

Next weekend I'm going with AAC friends up to Donner Summit and WILL climb, easy stuff at first.
I'm as excited as a kid anticipating Father Christmas!
Perhaps I'll see one or two of you there.

I thank everyone who's posted good wishes to me on this thread. I cannot adequately express how much that as eased my journey.

HT..glad to see you are doing well, welcome to the zipper club. I had double bypass over four years ago. Got right back on the horse and was climbing 5.12 ten weeks after surgery. I have travelled out of the country at least 12 times and driven into Mexico on six different occasions. Best of all is having the time with wife, children and grandchildren.

Everyday day is a gift and I really think I will be around for some time. If you are ever in the Taos area I would love to meet you and compare scars. :-)
