Hey,

Does anyone know which of the dirt roads up at Shuteye are gated in the winter? Or maybe a better questions is which are not gated? I've been up in the summer, but didn't take note of which roads had physical gates. I figure with the snow year we've been having, they are probably clear, but I think the forest service gates the ones they can anyway.

Thanks!

Minarets is gated at the cut off to Mammoth Pool.
The summit at Beasore was thick with ice, but not sure if Beasore way would be open to ridge proper.
The gate off road 222 was locked a few weeks ago. I think that is the road number.

Ok. Thanks so much! Do you know if the dirt roads that shoot off of minarets road before mammoth pool are gated? Like 7S02 that goes to the Big Sleep area?

Yeah there are gates there Matthew and are closed Dec 1-May 1. BS cause there isn't snow on the rocks up there. Chiquito Dome is accessible.

Do what WTF said and then buy a matching padlock and put your own lock on the gate...

No don't. Just kidding..

dirt roads get seriously screwed up and need a lot more maintenance when they are muddy.

Plus in winter time both the park service and the forest service operate on very reduced staffing levels.

just saying.

I hate the closures too.

Thanks for the advice. We spent Sunday/Monday at Chiquito dome. It's summer up there for sure; I came back with a nice t-shirt tan!

Yeah, it's way too dry already. Think the snakes will be out soon, if they haven't already left their dens.
Glad you got some climbing in, hopefully you will post some pics, if you took any.

Hello all. I have friends going to Shuteye this weekend, and I was thinking of going there April 13-17. From Grahm's book and this thread I gather the walk up way to Chiquito Dome is good to go. How about the FS campground nearby-open? I guess the road closure means Big Sleep and that region are locked up. If Chilkoot is open, then I'm thinking Hidden Eagle should be good. I've been to both Chicquito and Hidden Eagle (& will happily go to each again!) but is there anything else in season, and ungated that is accessible pre-May 1 gate opening?
Thanks again for any feedback!

I was there Saturday before Easter (the 4th) and the gate was "open" and the roads were clear, not a soul around we had all of Big Sleep to ourselves...blue bird day, gentle breeze...we scored!!

Wish I had the time to have stayed longer...but a day's all I could wrestle.

Good. Very Good. Buahahaha. Mean climber rejoices over warming. Not much chance that there is a storm big enough to cool these mountains this year. Demasiado sol en el cielo Amigos. Butter on a hot skillet.

Great news Roxy. My friends will be happy to hear, and my upcoming trip next week may have more climbing options. Big Sleep is very fun, and there are loads of other good areas nearby.
I hope this storm that just hit Tahoe and the Sierras doesn't shutdown some Shuteye areas that are open!

I'm glad the snow happened! I've seen how much we need it on trips to Tahoe and Yosemite this winter. Last week at Phantom Spires the bees and wasps were buzzing and all around a real lack of snow. I hope to get to Shuteye soon. It'll melt fast. Chiquito should be perfect this next week.
Rumor has it at least one Shuteye local climber was going to take out his snowmobile today!

F10,

Two weeks ago I asked the Forest Service personnel in the Clovis office when the roads up to Big Sleep will be open. They told me they would open on May 1. I have not been up there, but some roads do not have gates, yet are officially closed. I think the road up there falls under this category in that it does not have a gate, but is closed. Perhaps others can give some more recent information.

The road to Big Sleep has been open for a few weeks. Someone "opened" the gate with their truck in a unofficial way some time ago.

Several parties were climbing Big Sleep a couple of weeks ago

The little snow that was on the Minarets Road on Sunday was melted out by the evening. The snow is melting out fast, but this is causing the rock to be wet in places where there are ocassional water courses on the rock.

I did, John. The fellow I spoke with says he doesn't believe there will be much precipitation, although he warned me that we might see a bit of snow at The Balls, where we are going. It probably won't stick. He wasn't terribly concerned. I expect nothing more than possibly occasional rain/snow, but not much.

EDIT: Having read the forecast from your link, I may reconsider my destination.

As of 6:30am Thursday it was raining hard at 1000' in the foothills, with clouds building fast in all directions. I think it's going to rain substantially in the shuteye area today.

I guess we're just hoping to get to the 2wd parking/camping area. Don't have the book with me now and I can't remember the other places we're scoping out. Pretty much just looking for access to some moderate multi pitch, long/snowy approaches are fine.

bingo,

You cannot get to the normal 2WD spots on any of the side roads now because the gates are locked. As Mike indicated, you can presently get to Chiquito Dome along Minarets Road. Any higher locations will require hiking through snow and starting climbs in the snow.

I haven't been up Minarets in awhile, but Jeremy is right, once you get passed mile high, some of those corners hold ice till May. 2wd might be an epic out. Also Chiquito might be a little wet too.

What's the beta for skinning from Beasore to the Shuteye Summit?
Climberdude

Trad climber

Feb 12, 2016 - 08:17am PT
Besore Road is not maintained in the winter. You may be skinning not just from Cold Spring Summit, but quite a ways up Besore Road. Cold Spring Summit is over 7000 feet and there is likely to be snow on the Besore Road starting at 5000 feet.

Assuming you can get to Cold Spring Summit on Besore Road, head south on open areas of snow to Chikoot Lake area. Stay away from the open lake area since it has water in the winter (do not want to break through the ice). Head up on snow and rocks to the north Shuteye Peak (I assume you are referring to the North peak and not the south peak. The north peak is called Little Shuteye although it is taller.

Minarets Road is open to the winter gate just above Mammoth Pool turnoff - no snow even in the shade.

Dirt roads took a pounding from the runoff this season - running into 2 foot deep ruts in off-camber turns - drive slow.

Beasore still sketchy over Cold Springs Summit - mostly from downed tree trash mixed with icy crud..

Bump for data inquiry on Shuteye roads/approaches. My wife and I are hoping to get up there for the first week of June. That damn guidebook has me drooling like a fool. Must. Taste. Shuteye. Our last attempt was two years ago in May, and big storms shut us down.
