Nothing appears to have changed following Williamson's inclusion in the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument [in October 2014]. Just to be clear I suppose, the closure was officially imposed [again] by the ANF for calendar year 2015. Threats of fines, jail, the usual.

I work for a local fire department, how do I go about getting one of these special permits? I think I see some high angle rescue training in the near future :)

Riley.... The twisty roads with the scarey drop offs... are quite a barrier to civil servants.
Remember the last JT sup, I recall he, grew up in 29 palms but had never gone up the road to the park.
Well this guy is now packing off to a happy retirement, full pay and generous benefits...... the next one will most likely be worse.... hand picked by the CBD BOD.

No unelected federal civil servants receive "full pay" in retirement. The vast majority of current federal employees are on a (1% of high-three avg) x (years of service) scheme under FERS. I have voluntarily forsaken higher salaries in the private sector to serve my country. Army doesn't function without civil servants, the Marines don't function without civil servants. The very nature of the military, where for uniformed members 2 years in a position and then gone to something else is the norm, means you require stable backline support structures, and that in turn means civilians.
I don't know which federal employee kicked your puppy in your formative years Guy, but still...maybe lay off the heaping helping of stupid you serve up anytime public sector comes into the discussion.

Elcap, at the risk of thread drift I don't know if you were being deliberately
disingenuous or you just don't know the facts but you did fail to mention
the federal TSP program, basically a 401k, plus the fact that most federal
employees also receive Social Security. Add it all up and a lot of them
retire with close to their full pay check. In addition, federal employees
are also eligible for retiree health coverage, which is very valuable* for
early retirees but which in the private sector is shrinking even faster
than defined benefit pensions.
But we digress.

Reilly, quite aware of the facts, with 15+ years in FERS. 401ks and social security are not confined to public sector, are they? The notion put forth is that a person could get pension equal to salary. Which is far from the truth, as you know.

A few weeks ago I attended a public meeting with the new JTNP super. I was highly impressed. One of the subjects was the fees for use of the park.
By the way there was not one climber at the meeting.

I do not consider myself to be a climber. I am long over that. I considered I was there representing the Clean Team since I have been trained and cleared to work on park lands.
Guy:
All of the subjects you mentioned were discussed at length. The meeting at Copper Mountain College had been widely publicized. Hikers, equestrians, and motorcyclists were all well represented.
Something quite unusual happened while we all were waiting for the room to fill up. Sup Smith sat down with individual people and engaged them in conversation. When he found out I once climbed a little he said the park had decisions to make on bolts and would I be interested in that area. I replied that I had made my feelings on the subject well known and that my involvement would probably not be constructive, particularly as I no longer climb.
I will leave you with something I once heard. It was said that anyone who insists on things being done just so, may expect failure in their future.

Jose Enriquiz is the described "team leader" in the ANF's attempt to find some common ground that would allow climbing to resume at WR.
He seems like a nice guy and has worked hard on this project.
His boss was a slacker but, Jose seems to be genuinely concerned.
According to him we should see some changes by mid/late summer 2015 that may allow recreation at WR but, I'll believe it when I see it.
Either way it's refreshing to hear that this dysfunctional supervisor is no longer involved.

Closure has been renewed from 1/14/16 to 1/17/17.
Last year's order expired 12/31/15.
