Thanks Darwin,

That looks terrifying to me! A lot of water too.
How long would that stretch of gorge be?

Driving Instructions:

From Blenheim township. Get onto State Highway (1) to the Kaikoura and on to Christchurch.
Seddon is a short 25k drive. Just before Seddon is the famous single lane Awatere Bridge, where the freight train passes over the top of the passenger cars.
After Seddon, the next feature is lake Grassmere 35ks. our biggest salt works.

At 46ks you will be driving through a little county town called in Ward.
54ks, you will be approaching the Waima River. Now slow down, on the right just before the bridge you should see a push bike sitting on top of a white water tank.
Turn right onto Ure Road. Drive 11.9ks for 30 minutes up a gravel road.

The last 15 minutes is very narrow and steep. You might have to open two of three gates along the way. Please make sure you shut the gates after you.
The last 100m of road goes right past the front lawn of the farmers house.

DO NOT drive any farther, the road is for 4X4 only, walk the last 80m.

I have been all over Ward (landlslides, earthquake)... didn't realise this little gem was so close!

Cheers, thanks! Added to bucket list.

We portaged around it. We were pretty extended and without any remote communications devices, thus we avoided as much risk as we could. I think the narrow canyon section was about 1 mile, and it started with a approx. 30' waterfall. Normally we would either paddle or line up-river (e.g. below), but that was out of the question in this case.

I'm glad the thread has legs. I'm not trying to hijack your thread (little danger of that), but I've been thinking about posting some of arctic river kyak trips, so I'm testing out the waters.

Lining through aufeis

Different trip, different people, different place, paddling upriver.

Good stuff Avery! Way to milk those photos. You have learned well Grasshopper.

Darwin, post up those TR's about rivers. Any TR is a good one. I have put up TRs that weren't earth shattering and still got a good response. People here can appreciate any good adventure.

Here's an example of one with 0 climbing and 0 paddling.

And it must be nice to have something make New Zealand look tropical.

;-)

But seriously: I've never been to N.Z. and your photos were taken on a stellar day by Seattle standards. That must one of the drier spots on the South Island guessing by the map(?).

Hi Darwin,

Yeah, Blenheim is the the sunniest town/city in NZ.

We're also in the middle of a drought

You'd be surprised how tropical the west of NZ can be.

You said that gorge was about a mile long. That's huge by NZ standards.

Lets see some more pics!

Cheers!
