Atmospherics, for purposes of this thread, are not strictly "clouds" in the normal white fluffy stereotypes, but are more plays of wind, light and moisture in the atmosphere.

Rays of light and dark are sometimes seen beaming down from holes in cloud. In atmospheric optics these are called crepuscular rays. I recently learned a much better name: God rays. Here are God rays directed at a sparsely populated wide expanse of nature (characteristics of areas referred to as God's country) in Montana.

Here is another example of crepuscular rays which it seems to me could equally well be called God rays.

Such a sight may be hard to reconcile with the fact that rays from the Sun are very close to parallel when they reach Earth. Here is what shadows cast by trees in fog look like from a different perspective.

A little windy:

Does this count as those crepuscular thingies, or not because there are not really clouds? But maybe some morning mist and campfires?

depth of field issue here. the diagonal stripe of cirrus is high above.
setting that layer aside, i think that what we are looking at is cloud formation where water vapor
is condensing into visible moisture and simultaneously there is intrusion of convective columns
which are warm enough to dissipate droplets right at the point of penetration.

little baby lenticulars were forming and disappearing very quickly at that level. in another part of the sky this one hung around long enough to frame. it appears kind of "hybridized" and i wonder if there is an interface mid cloud involving temperature and/or shear.

would love to hear an interpretation from someone who knows this stuff, or even speculative rebuttal

Sundog today ...
Wiki: Sun dogs are commonly caused by the refraction of light from plate-shaped hexagonal ice crystals either in high and cold cirrus or cirrostratus clouds ... the crystals act as prisms, bending the light rays passing through them with a minimum deflection of 22°.

I live in Norman, OK, home of the Storm Prediction Center, National Severe Storms Lab, and a host of weather research institutes. There are more meteorologists per capita here than any other place on Earth.

I started going out storm chasing in the early 90's. Within a few years, I started volunteering on the Spring Tornado Missions, where we went out with a dozen instrument-laden vehicles, mobile radars, sometimes aircraft.

I learned a lot about mesoscale meteorology over the next 12 years or so. We never liked the guys who just chased to get video, but in the early days, we all knew each other, and it was cool. These days, there might be a hundred chaser vehicles on a single storm, clogging the roads.

I stopped going out with them about 5 years ago. I still go out, but it has to be just right, and close to home. We used to get up, drive to SW Nebraska, follow a supercell into Iowa until dark, and then drive home. It was brutal driving that much. We did all kinds of field experiments: hurricanes, electrification, boundary layer, you name it. I've seen a lot of storms.

I only go out when it is a good day, storms are close and upstream, no more than 40 miles or so away. The 2013 Moore F5 was really close, There are only 1 or 2 F5's a year, out of 1100+ tornadoes, most tornadoes are out over open country. Getting on an F5 with a perfect road network is once in a lifetime.
