Celebration for the Ocean!
Last night I was talking with Lynn leichtfuss about the ocean.. she inspired me! Most climbing areas have some ocean evidence..
They say human origin is from ocean.

Mt. Wapta, Mt. Dennis and Mt. Stephen are all Canadian peaks but not what you might call a Proper Climbing Area. They are prime areas for viewing the formation known as the Burgess Shale, however. It says so in the link.

This shale and its specimens were a subject of great interest to the science historian/baseball nut Stephen J. Gould, who wrote a book The Burgess Shale.

I only had to struggle through the book. donini actually lived through much of the era's latter millenniums!

Lloyd Burgess is not in the movie, though.

No, wait...he is in the movie Cool Bridges...what was I thinking?

Hey, Pyro, awesome Thread. I enjoyed our discussion last night and it was cool how we found common ground in the ocean. Like you and many others here, I love oceans and pretty much all bodies of water large or small.

You can even boulder right on the shore of St. Thomas :)

You have inspired me to load my pictures onto my new computer. Maybe I'll find something like the time I did the fun, tourist thing off Grand Cayman where you go out a couple miles to a sandbar and hold and feed the stingrays. Special critters!

Great white shark hanging out by Aptos cement ship
A great white shark was seen swimming around the cement ship in Aptos at Seacliff State Beach this week.

The shark was spotted there on Saturday and Wednesday, and people who saw it estimated it was 8-9 feet long.

Sean Van Sommeran, director of the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation in Santa Cruz, confirmed that the ocean animal was a great white shark. Van Sommeran said the shark appears to have an abrasion on its head.

Beach-goer Manuel Partida shot video of the great white. VIDEO: Great white shark swims around cement ship

It turns out that great whites are fond of Aptos' cement ship, where recreational fishermen often fish from a pier leading to the ship.

"We see them there every season, maybe even same individuals," Van Sommeran said.

Sharks are people too.

Lens wise tokina (10-17mm fisheye), 60 and 105 macro lenses, zen glass mini dome, plus diopters, plus sola focus light. Also have some shots from an lumix lx5 in a ike housing, plus some way old film stuff from old S&S cameras, and a gopro. My GF just got an 5DMIII (I have sensor envy).

We let the crew keep the marlin - it's really how they make any money on the charters. After all, what was I going to do? Stuff it and bring it back to Boulder?

No worries, there were still a bunch of live mackerel in the bait well, so we took them home and had them for dinner, and also took about 10 lbs? more? of ahi and had that as poke and sashimi, as well as grilled, a couple of days later. With 8 of us eating the ahi, there was still a bunch leftover. LEFTOVER AHI!?!?!

Environment
Ocean Life Faces Mass Extinction, Broad Study Says

JAN. 15, 2015

Carl Zimmer

A team of scientists, in a groundbreaking analysis of data from hundreds of sources, has concluded that humans are on the verge of causing unprecedented damage to the oceans and the animals living in them.

“We may be sitting on a precipice of a major extinction event,” said Douglas J. McCauley, an ecologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an author of the new research, which was published on Thursday in the journal Science.

But there is still time to avert catastrophe, Dr. McCauley and his colleagues also found. Compared with the continents, the oceans are mostly intact, still wild enough to bounce back to ecological health.

“We’re lucky in many ways,” said Malin L. Pinsky, a marine biologist at Rutgers University and another author of the new report. “The impacts are accelerating, but they’re not so bad we can’t reverse them.”

Scientific assessments of the oceans’ health are dogged by uncertainty: It’s much harder for researchers to judge the well-being of a species living underwater, over thousands of miles, than to track the health of a species on land. And changes that scientists observe in particular ocean ecosystems may not reflect trends across the planet.

Dr. Pinsky, Dr. McCauley and their colleagues sought a clearer picture of the oceans’ health by pulling together data from an enormous range of sources, from discoveries in the fossil record to statistics on modern container shipping, fish catches and seabed mining. While many of the findings already existed, they had never been juxtaposed in such a way.

A number of experts said the result was a remarkable synthesis, along with a nuanced and encouraging prognosis.

“I see this as a call for action to close the gap between conservation on land and in the sea,” said Loren McClenachan of Colby College, who was not involved in the study.

There are clear signs already that humans are harming the oceans to a remarkable degree, the scientists found. Some ocean species are certainly overharvested, but even greater damage results from large-scale habitat loss, which is likely to accelerate as technology advances the human footprint, the scientists reported.

Coral reefs, for example, have declined by 40 percent worldwide, partly as a result of climate-change-driven warming.

Some fish are migrating to cooler waters already. Black sea bass, once most common off the coast of Virginia, have moved up to New Jersey. Less fortunate species may not be able to find new ranges. At the same time, carbon emissions are altering the chemistry of seawater, making it more acidic.

“If you cranked up the aquarium heater and dumped some acid in the water, your fish would not be very happy,” Dr. Pinsky said. “In effect, that’s what we’re doing to the oceans.”

Fragile ecosystems like mangroves are being replaced by fish farms, which are projected to provide most of the fish we consume within 20 years. Bottom trawlers scraping large nets across the sea floor have already affected 20 million square miles of ocean, turning parts of the continental shelf to rubble. Whales may no longer be widely hunted, the analysis noted, but they are now colliding more often as the number of container ships rises.
Continue reading the main story Continue reading the main story
Continue reading the main story

Mining operations, too, are poised to transform the ocean. Contracts for seabed mining now cover 460,000 square miles underwater, the researchers found, up from zero in 2000. Seabed mining has the potential to tear up unique ecosystems and introduce pollution into the deep sea.

The oceans are so vast that their ecosystems may seem impervious to change. But Dr. McClenachan warned that the fossil record shows that global disasters have wrecked the seas before. “Marine species are not immune to extinction on a large scale,” she said.

Until now, the seas largely have been spared the carnage visited on terrestrial species, the new analysis also found.

The fossil record indicates that a number of large animal species became extinct as humans arrived on continents and islands. For example, the moa, a giant bird that once lived on New Zealand, was wiped out by arriving Polynesians in the 1300s, probably within a century.

But it was only after 1800, with the Industrial Revolution, that extinctions on land really accelerated.

Humans began to alter the habitat that wildlife depended on, wiping out forests for timber, plowing under prairie for farmland, and laying down roads and railroads across continents.

Species began going extinct at a much faster pace. Over the past five centuries, researchers have recorded 514 animal extinctions on land. But the authors of the new study found that documented extinctions are far rarer in the ocean.

I like going down into the ocean at night. The fish are loud, in places, yelling at each other. If there's a moon, I don't even need a light until around 50 feet (16M). Coming up on a big critter in the dark can send a tingle down the ole spine. But the light, gives you good visibility for a short range but blinds you to what's happening on the peripehery.

Here's one from the Maldives. A ridge, with a ferocious current going across it. A shark was circling waiting to get into the bait ball.

We're back from a season in Nz but take a look at this mutha of all storm, Cyclone Pam, headed south and anticipated to skirt to the east and just "nip" NZ.

With a 932 Mb center this is the most powerful storm to cruise through these waters in over 30 years. Category 5 with 320 km winds.............

Fortunately it appears it will slide between Vanuatu, New Caledonia to the West and Fiji to the East.

Alas one scary mutha indeed!

Gunkie - you were very close to losing a member of your fantasy surf team. Fanning got attacked by a great white but came out with not a scratch (just a bitten in half leash).

After further review as well as listening to an argument a shark expert that I know I believe that Mick was KNOT attacked. The shark was swimming at the surface, it became curious as to what Mick was, got caught in his leash, thrashed about, and well, we saw the rest.

Whites attack from below on a vertical vector. You've all seen the shots of a fully airborne white with seal in mouth.

Mick reports one pressure ding on the board and no bite marks. It's hard to imagine that big fish ever had it's mouth open.

But at the time I'm pretty sure if you tried to convince Mick he wasn't being attacked he'd flip you off and tell you the same.

^^^^^^give the man a cigar. That is the correct answer, as Great Whites are generally ambush predators and if Mick had really been attacked he would probably have something to show for it other than a video. It was just curious. Thank you for putting that up, as I've been hesitant to say that here for some reason. Doesn't mean it wasn't a scary encounter btw....

The man got a punch in on a great white.. buddy/competitor came to help at his own unknown risk.. its a serious story with a perfect outcome..I wondered if it was an attack or not myself.. regardless that's one hell of a close encounter I would not like to have.

Got to snorkel in the ocean for the first time back in May. A return trip to my birthplace with my dad almost 40 years after leaving at age 5.

Had so much fun I'm headed to Peurto Rico in September.. I am so in love with tropical oceans now.

The spot my dad took me swimming when I was 1 day old.

Cool spot..If we had stayed and I had grown up here..pretty sure I woulda been big wave surfer...This place gets big but not so much this day.

The white pointer had passed Mick and became entangled in the leash. Watch the video, it's dorsal was moving away and it changes direction and thrashes.

I have a friend who was surfing waipio valley and a tiger shark was cruising through and got hung up in his leash and drug him 200yds before it broke free... Scary stuff , took him 3 months to paddle out again.

I already stared a thread for this but thought i'd cross post on this thread too. Please reply on the other thread...

Last weekend I encountered a group from the Great Whale Conservancy attempting to set up an anatomically correct inflatable 85ft long whale at San Carlos Beach in Monterey, CA. This was being done for a BBC/PBS show. Unfortunately for them, there was some wind that day (and most days) on the coast. Since the big ass inflatable whale is basically a large sail under these conditions it tried to escape the land to be with it's brothers in the sea, almost smothering a small child or two in the process ;) I offered to help them the next day so the BBC shoot could happen.

Well they just called me and said they're in San Diego now and need some help. I used 2 jumars and one mini-trax in conjunction with 3 static lines and some other anchor gear to set up in Monterey. Post up if you want to help em out and you guys in touch!

Hey Pyro
I surfed Willow once.
I was rollin solo, no real significant swell in the water. Checked it from where your vid was shot and watched 3 OH tepees roll in out of the kelp- pretty much where that right comes in at about 1:15.
Then I looked down at da boyz in the carpark. Muddy trucks and gun racks. Went for it anyway.
No pre surf stretch or smoke or watch. It was on with the suit and out there.
I knew they'd be scrutinizing me and my "souther" board.
As I was just starting the cobble dance one yelled
"Nice booties hahaha!!!!"
Thing was, I wasn't wearing any.
First/only time heckled for NO booties.

Made it out easy and went straight to where those peaks came in.
I was nervous- new spot with locals just waiting to heckle, and sometimes I suffer from stage fright.
Sure enough those peaks popped up out of deep water. They were way bigger than they looked from the cliff.
I paddled over the first and was in perf position for #2 and it was a gem.
Dragged my arm as soon as I stood up and got a proper barrel, cutback, kicked out heart beating.
Got a hoot from the boyz, had a great session.
FYI the water is 10+ degrees colder there than anywhere around. Big rocks, big fish, more powerful/bigger than it looks.

Thanks for the vid!

the lost coast was road's end on my recent wanderings, savoring the memories of this old crimping ground.it sure felt like the bouldering at black sands beach was pretty personal back during the watergate era.think blue suede boots and halibut hat. summer job: launched boats out of shelter cove those years.never the luxury of a spotter, but not a better landing surface ... like a splashdown into the chiclet pit! my seventies sweetheart still lives on a nearby bluff, was a nostalgic visit. forty years of history here.salt of the earth family, gen 3&4 at the cove, still conducting a century of righteous commerce therefrom the internet:

been surfing central coast this week , padddled out on a beautiful clear day with small surf at the spot in photo after about an hour spotted the landlord feeding on something about 50 ft from me and my two bros were sitting in the lineup. first spotted the dorsal fin , then it breached exposing it's back and tail estimate at least 10' great white. first shark I've seen in cali in 42 yrs of surf. we decided to paddle in :)

Debris in the oceans is something we need to address, among countless other environmental concerns.

DO YOUR PART and CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELVES WHEN VISITING THE BEACH OR MOTORING AROUND ON THE BRINY.

Okay?

From the magic pen of Fossil Climber in the Another Poetry Thread--

Understand that the warmer waters in many coastal areas have increased toxic phytoplankton blooms
and thus the chance of paralytic shellfish poisoning for those who harvest clams and mussels.
Had to say something about this:

Red Tide

(Gonyaulax toxicus)

There’s a pot of clams a-steaming on my venerable Coleman,
And they strained the intertidal till today.
But I spotted telltale dimples and I dug them from their burrows
And I rinsed the sand and carried them away.

Now the pot is gently steaming and my mind is softly dreaming
Of the chowders and the dips that lie in store,
And those clams are all through scheming of predacious filter-feeding;
They will threaten phytoplankton nevermore!

Now my appetite is sated and the clam threat is abated,
And the zooplankton have a bit more peace -
But I’m feeling nauseated and my gut is irritated,
And I wonder if this malaise will increase.

Have my motives altruistic reaped a poison paralytic?
My attempt to save the plankton been betrayed?
I fear some dinoflagellate may cause me to regurgitate -
Good intentions have betrayed me, I’m afraid!
