I must say, I'm surprised that this thread didn't take. After 44 years of being climber, I'd have to say my memories are mostly about my climbing partners. I think about the Kinley Adams/Bruce Adams/Rick Piggott years or the Tom Gibson/Rob Rohn/George Manson years or the Clare Dunning or Clean Dan years. That's how I anchor my personal climbing history. I got a strong pack animal sensibility or something I guess.

Well, I was going to throw down. But you said through the years, not months. I started actually climbing (today I guess that would be called "trad"), as opposed to toproping and bouldering, January 25, 2014. That is when I met Mark Ott on a meetup in Joshua Tree and we did Walk on the wild side. Both of being mostly german and loving Irish whisky, we hit it off from the start. About 6 weeks later after burning out on being cheese grated in Joshua tree cracks, Mark had me do my first lead(WOTWS) the next day. I had a great time and needless to say, Mark and WOTWS now have a special place in my memories. Looking forward to more great times Mark, and more Jamasons and Tullamore Dew.

My first climbIng partner Andrew. We learned how to stay alive the hard way.

Jersey Paul has always been my Black Canyon buddy.

Steph is the best rope gun ever.

Climbed El Cap with this guy for our first time roping up.
Linus is the man.

Icky Eric has always been good for some ADHD adventures.

Marie and I got in a gob of towers last year. More to come I'm sure.

The crotchety and crusty Bleeder has been one of my longest standing partners.

Chill has been another longtime partner of mine.

Good ol' Verm is always a good partner.

Can't forget the Hankster and Bun Bun.

There are many more. I'll add on when I get a chance.

This is a good topic. It is important in these things that we do to have another soul with whom to meditate on, with whom to inebriate about, with whom we celebrate those small magical things on the rock.

The ant busy amongst the vertical crystals way off the deck. The raspberries ripe on the ledge. The badly abraded sheath that still held the core intact. No one else would really get it without them.

Best damn Jack-Mormon I ever did know. We been through some sticky situations, and we're still looking for trouble out there in the great sandy freedom beyond the pavement.

Admiral Grungebunny: I tried to set up a TR for him his first time out, only to find him up top when I got around. He's in the great wild beyond of the Pataguch right meow. Yes that is a bicycle helmet.

This guy, y'know, the one who shat his pants on more than one first date:

This woman climbs harder than me without shoes on her feet. I love her (besides the fact that she is quick and strong and way better at managing the fear than me).

Looking back it appears I find young talent, spend weeks and weeks of our time catching them up to where I'm at, then they either leave or quit climbing and I'm stuck finding another. Just outta high school, Kenny Rose took me to Courtright and showed me the dark arts. Still love climbing and hanging with Kenny

Brandon McLemore, "I'm f*#king down for whatever" attitude has been nothing but pure fun. Laughs and laughs, one of the best. My main partner, my brother Jeremy. We taught ourselves how to put up routes and are both still here.

Cam Donnahoo, pretty cool to work for someone, who you can go climb with.

Kevin Ludwig, pure comedy and fun. Acts like he can't climb, but has done way more than I ever will.

Eric Palmer, been fun the last couple years climbing and hanging with one of my best childhood friends.

Grahm Doe, spent so many hours putting up routes with Grahm. He is a machine, sun up to sun down.

Barry Chambers, the master resoler. Damn good climber and always cool to talk climbing with.

Hansel Heiss, grew up and made it through our partying days together. A natural climber and one of my lifelong friends.

Matt Schutz, strong, humble, and climbed El Cap in his early teens. Has put up a ton of stuff, but always stoked on whatever he's climbing

Tom Slater, again nothing but laughs and fun. Great photographer too.

My dog adu has been everywhere with me. She even has a wall named after her.

I am lucky to have experienced it all with these guys and dog. Climbing wouldn't be the same without them.

Well, I would have to say the only guy who I've climbed with, of and on, for over 45 years, is Jim Donini. All the others have pretty much retired from the sport, or I just don't connect with them anymore. I did the Salathe Wall with Jim, back in 1971, and was with him in Yosemite this past Spring, for a week.Jim's been a great partner, over the years.

It is rare to find a climber as stoked on climbing as I am. Ettore and I taught ourselves the craft and are still pulling on the rocks together, several years later.

Powder is not only one of the most perfect, patient, knowledgeable and fun partners, but has also showed me a lot of amazing places up in Tuolumne and beyond, and I feel like my technique/footwork gets better every time I climb with her.

Just needed a few deep breaths.

Partners are indeed a worthy thread topic. I once added up the people I had spent a full day climbing with. There were 105 that I could remember. That was a few years ago.

I suppose that 'main' is intended to mean the people we climbed a lot with, but as a nod to quality I am going to include people I may not have climbed a lot with but had good times with, and as a nod to human frailty, forget a few I probably had equally good times with.

Be glad that I did not learn to use a camera until lately.

Glad to have jogged your memory! Yeah, I was a little put out that I was about to take him climbing for the first time, then you got to him, and it was off to Yosemite. Good thing, too! Dave hasn't climbed for a few years, given some torn muscles from an attempt at the NIAD, and several severe mountain biking crashes. But he's still kickin', still pushing the envelope with something, and still a great friend. Cheers!

MH2,
I overlapped your Seattle time. I remember having climbed with Adrian the wild and crazy Romanian guy. Was trying to remember his name when talking to a friend recently. I said "just ask any Seattle climber from the mid-80s and they'll know who I'm talking about". Remember Pat Timson from the UW weight room and we were in JT at the same time (when he was changing girlfriends).

Adrian, who changed his last name to Nature.

In Romania he lived in a hut near the climbing, barely getting enough to eat and afraid to fall on the frayed ropes and funky gear. He was one of several climbers from far away who showed me what real passion for climbing is.

A story goes that he once went up to Colchuck Lake and met a woman who tried to convince him to sign with her modeling agency. Adrian hated Communism, but he hated Capitalism equally, and any and all superficiality and artifice. I felt sorry for the woman.

Last time I saw Adrian was probably 2002 in Camp 4. I was walking the path and a shock-wave voice from Midnight Lightning hurt my eardrums and brought me up short; "HEY CAIRNS!! WHAT THE FUK YOU DOIN' WITH YOU LAZY FUKIN' CAPITALIST ASS??!!"

I was glad to see him.

When I first saw the admittedly great thread title, I shied away because it seemed too personal. Eeyonkee: I bet some of the lack of initial response is due to that. Related to that, most of us who have climbed a while have lost really important climbing partners whether due to accident or just life. It's bitter-sweet for me to bring up their names, but that's also what actually reeled me into posting. I want to mention partners I wish I still had. Also, I find the 7 degrees of separation aspect fascinating.

Luke Freeman. 1968 to early 70s, still in-touch.
Matt Pollock(D). 1968-1972, 1993-1995.
Bruce Pollock(D). 1970-mid 70s. It just guts me that the two Pollock brothers aren't around any more.
Peter Haan. 1970-1972. I learned tons, but I'm sorry I didn't take more advantage of his mentoring.
Adlai L. 1993-present
Tony B. 1995-present
Dana K. 1994-97 sheesh, he got into kiteboarding. ;-)
Mark I. 1994-present

It still seems awfully personal.

Hey, thanks for that, Darwin. I think you may be on to something. Fact is, I really have wondered whether my overall experience is the norm or not. Clearly based on my initial post, I'm kind of a monogamous guy. In 44 years of climbing, the 14 partners I listed really do account for I would guess 90 - 95 percent of the climbs I have done.

Climbing partners, it seems to me is always an interesting dynamic. Sometimes, you go for weeks climbing with the same person. It's nice to be able to count on it. When that person is out for some reason, you start going through your list. Basically, the "main climbing partner" in my initial post refers to anybody on that list.

Sometimes, after you lose a longtime regular, you flounder a bit...waste good climbing weekends because you were too shy or otherwise not on it.

I'm going to post some pictures of my guys soon.

By the way, mighty impressive list there, MH2.

some people you climb with, and then, some people you climb with

one of my favorites: I had climbed pretty soft all day. I quivered and quaked and spoke aloud to the heavens to get through the top two leads of Sentinel Spire.

Then we hiked over to the Otto's Route. Admiral Grungebunny took off barefoot, off belay. Shortly thereafter I was seconding the final overhang (major exposure!) and starting to wimp out, when Andy says:

"Wait dude you're not on belay."

I learned a lot about my own self that day. If the mind wills it, etc.

"WAAY TO GO DONNY! State of Israel: If you will it, dude, it is no dream." Deep, heavy liberating stuff.

One can always go back to photograph some route but you can't go back and photograph your partner that day. I've got boxes and old carrousels full of slides and old photos that I'd throw all away in trade to have a few photos of old partners some of whom are long gone.
