Harley (the cat) boiled outside to go to the catbox in the wild, this morning, and stuck inside the rest of the day.
I had two longer journeys with the big garbage can on wheels, down to the country road for pickup, and later, back to house.
I had to keep repeating to myself: "bend ze knees und stay flexible." Austrian Ski Instructor wisdom to a young Fritz back in the 1950's in Sun Valley, Idaho.
Got any "Early Winter, cold as Schist stories?"

Hey it's winter alright in California. I put on a long sleeve shirt to go to the climbing gym last night. I even brought a light synthetic fleece jacket just in case, but that was an overreaction.

I'm honored to post after Bob Harrington.
I'll report it did indeed rain this morning here and something weird was certainly going on with the weather because the fish stopped biting yesterday. But I was wearing shorts by 3 pm.

The weather has been weirdly warm since spring this year. No cold fog.

The hard thing about this last storm is that the weather changed so abruptly.
It was 77 degrees in eastern Colorado the day before the storm hit and we were still working in our gardens. I finished planting my last flower bulbs with an inch of snow on my head and shoulders.
The wildlife was caught by surprise also. That's why eKat had a bear on her deck and why my mother in western Colorado surprised one outside the window of her senior housing.
The really weird thing to contemplate is that this storm was provoked by one of the most powerful super typhoons in Japanese history.Since typhoons are super hot and humid, the idea of one of those forcing arctic air south is something I'm still trying to wrap my mind around.

Boise got about 6-8" of snow yesterday & this morning, with more expected overnight. The low there for Sat. night is 2 f.
Their local news tonight showed the scramble to remove snow from the BSU football field and clean stadium seats. It looked like the field was still snowy, wet, & fuked for football, with a hard freeze tonight.
San Diego State plays football there Sat. night, starting at 8:15 P.M. It should be an interesting California warm vs Idaho cold "reality-check."
I can hardly wait for Idaho's version of the "ice-bowl."

That's a impressive "Lake-effect" snowstorm in western NY state and surrounding areas. Watched reports on NBC News tonight, and some areas are getting 6' of snow with more expected. Supposedly it's the earliest/biggest storm to impact that area so heavily.
(Of course it's not related to global warming.) I don't watch Fox Snews, but they likely made a point of adding that information.

I talked with a buddy of mine who lives in Hamburg, a southern suburb of Buffalo,he has over 70 inches and it is still coming down.
It has the potential to exceed the 24 hour record for snowfall with another 2 feet predicted tonight.
Snowing 4-6 inches per hour there now.
Me,an hour east, not so much, but, plenty in the hills south of here.
60-70 mph winds and whiteouts now.
Angry weather.
It was 70 here this past monday and it is going to be 60 by tuesday.

The forecast is for rain and 50's this weekend, that new weight with all of this snow.
Well I am hoping for the best.

Im at Stonybrook university today visiting my daughter. Blustery and cool but none of that lake effect snow made it as far as Long Island. The seven feet of snow in Buffalo; now that would be a sight I haven't seen since my young days at Tahoe. Wonder how long it will taje them to dig out and get back to some semblance of normality?

From AP http://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/as-snow-ends-roof-collapses-floods-are-concerns/ar-BBeNeMr
Even for the Buffalo area — one of the snowiest and hardiest places in America — this was one for the history books. The three-day total is close to the nearly 8 feet that the region typically gets over an entire year.
Because the Buffalo area is so snowy, building codes require homes and businesses to be able to handle up to 50 pounds per square foot on their roofs, which would be about as heavy as a slab of concrete 4 inches thick, according to Mark Bajorek, a structural engineer.
As anyone who has ever shoveled snow knows, its weight depends in part on how wet or fluffy it is, not just on how deep it is. But Bajorek said some buildings may be close to that limit now, with more precipitation on the way.

hey there say, all... thanks for the weather reports..
just got a great photo from home, in san jose, where the rain came... made the area LOOK like i remembered it, in nov, when a kid...
mouse, thanks for the new york stuff--did not get a chance to see the picks... whewwwwwww... heard about all the snow, back then, though... heard it was melting, since, too...
*last year, so much snow came here and did NOT melt FOR NEAR THE whole season, :O
this year, so far, we are 7-10 degrees colder than last winter, which was nearly 10 degrees, steady, colder than the year before, which before that, were not such drastic differences, on the whole... (summer and spring, for the most part, too, were 10 degrees diff, as well)...
wow, sure hope NEXT year is not 7-10 degrees colder, :O
but, so far, better news here, than last year:
the snow is not as steady, with the 'no melts' ...
had only about 2-4 inches, off and on (and only about 2, here, in my area) and now:
most all is melted... and will be a 'sunny' though in the 30's low = mid 20's kind of week...
so diff, than last year, wow...
course, jan and feb, have not set in yet...
last year the most wild snow shoveling many of us had to do, for (what the old timers say, was perhaps 100? years??? = but will have to check on that as to 'exactness') ... *after i find which two neighbors, SAID that, :))
:)
well, glad that my mom got to enjoy the rain, into her yard, :)

No sun in our town, where we've been without power since the storm Wednesday night. Folks filling water bottles at the fire station, or buying coffee at Dunkin Donuts (who intially had it driven over from other stores, but now have their own power back) are looking kinda bedraggled. We've got a woodstove so we stay warm and cheerful, but it will be nicer when lights and the water supply come back. Another day, they tell us.

After a week with high temps in the mid-60's here in Choss Creek, no nights below freezing, & almost no precipitation out of the blowby of the great California storm I'm starting to think we might skirt around the frosty legs of old woman winter, here in the Idaho desert.
Unfortunately, the Solstice lights on the Inukshuks just don't look as good without snow.

It sure hasn't been winter-like for the last 2 weeks in South Idaho. Average highs are running 10 degrees F above the hundred year average, which works out to daytime highs in the mid 50's to mid 60's, and nighttime lows above freezing. The asparagus is up two weeks earlier than we've ever seen and the arugula & chives are happy too. Best of all: the mountain snowpacks in central & east Idaho are still near or above average.
I am kinda, sorta, starting to feel sorry for those folks in the NE US.

Don't waste no tears on us, Fritz. It's -1 wind chill and 16 above with the sun shining...dang, it actually feels like spring is in the air!

Didn't really feel like spring was in the air here Ms. L.
More like summer.
I've been outside all day in glorious sunshine, too. The temp didn't get much above 60, so it didn't quite feel like summer was here yet, but definitely close.

hey there, say, willbeer... oh my, say, i am in mich... most of it, moved around our area, though, but say:
these last few night, i KEEP getting updates from my boston friend, every night, BY phone, and i HEAR her news on the tv. there, and whewww, it is
not good... :O
what is so funny, just now, is this:
that LINK that you sent, well, i THINK it is the same news clip that i heard her listening to, on her tv, of the newscaster, and the thundersnow, lightning, :O
i wanted to see it, as, the weatherman really did seem to 'lose it' during
that report... :O oh my...
i will go see that now... thanks for sharing...
say, take care, ... stay off roads... all kinds of squalls, still and
multi car pile ups... :)
say, warbler, are you one of chappy's friends,
say, just saying 'hey there' if so, :)
(seems i saw a post, and that you might be...)
:)
wow, i just saw the clip:
ps:
also, willbeer, NOW i understand this, as well...
she said that someone sent in a tape, of their toddler WATCHING this,
and while she was watching this, clip, my friend said:
the toddler was DANCING... lilke--dancing along with the guy...
and gigglings...
i could not FIGURE OUT WHY... why would a little kid, dance to a guy, yelling about the snow and weather...
well NOW I Know--
he looked like he was dancing up a storm, there... :))
oh my... of course, why NOT dance along... :)

Yeah, lots of snow here right now. However, we are a hardy bunch and it's freaking winter after all!
My 200+ year old home is hurting right now. Ice dams are the devils work. Water was dripping vigorously inside my house because of those damn ice dams on the roof.
The worst part is that, as a carpenter and homeowner, I'm unable financially to remedy this situation that I know oh so well to be damaging the frame of my beautiful old place.
On a lighter note, I spent eight hours yesterday snow blowing, fixing the snow blower, shoveling, and removing snow from roofs. At it's worst, I was moving coffee table sized chunks of ice. At it's best, I was getting a tan standing atop a ladder roof raking my home to prevent more ice dams.
The roofs I shoveled two weeks ago now have mid-thigh deep snow on them again, time to repeat the process.
The big positive is that my mom, who suffers from psychological disorders, is still keen to maintain the neighborhood. She lives down the road from me with her mum and at fifty eight is out there moving snow like a boss. Go mom!
Pretty much, it's all good here in NH.
How's everyone else doing?

Yosemite Valley was very warm, so warm that we hid in the shade on a Saturday cragging session at the base of Royal Arches... and climbed in tee-shirts in the Sun on Schultz's ridge...
the central valley of California is in blossom...
and there is no water due from the sky anytime soon.

Yes I am serious.
I was skiing down a nice pitch yesterday when I was all of a sudden freaked out by what I thought was the sound of an Avalanche above me.
It was thunder, right in the middle of a snowfall.
Then some lightning.
Unreal.
Later ,when home ,it started ice raining for a bit,in -3f temps.
Two things I have never seen.
Brandon ,I hear you about The Snow!

Left Moab with daytime temps in the mid to high 60s with plenty of sunshine. Arrived Santa Cruz with temps in high 70s, hitting 80 and the beaches full. I had to remind myself several times it was Presidents' Day not Memorial Day.
Bought new-for-me crampons a few months ago. Not likely to get used.
Headed up to Yosemite on Thursday....guess I'll leave my skis and snowshoes behind.
Oh well at least my bikes are getting a good workout while the wax melts off my skis.
Family back east are in a whole different situation. Said I'd visit later in the spring!
Susan
Wilbeer and Brandon....several generations of my family back east are saying the same "never encountered anything like this". Also the ice issues are really bad and horrible bitter cold that is just unrelenting.

Thunder snow, I love that stuff!
Haven't witnessed it in a couple of years now.
Keep it real, Wilbeer, let's do something on rock this year.
Edit; Susan, if you're here this year in more accommodating weather, I'd be stoked to show you around NH.
And Wilbeer, it's crazy that you got thunder, it usually accompanies warmer snow and it's been pretty dang cold. Super unusual.

Colorado seems to be alternating between the two extremes. We have three or four days of 50 degree weather and then it snows and inch or two for a couple of days and then warms right up again. I alternately shovel snow and work in my garden ??!

Reilly,
I live along the ten mile route from the freeway to Mt Sunapee on a state highway (well, I live on a loop off of the main route) and I can tell you that the Massachussets plates on the BMW SUV's tell a story of easy driving and mass spending at the local hill.
Salt the sh#t outta the roads and those with money will come...
At least some of us are getting a winter, and I'm a jaded Tahoe guy.

Will do Brandon.
The Hill I was skiing has been known to slide,I have set off some good sloughs there,as I did yesterday.
Hence my fear.
And It was very cold ,but, you do not get cold with a 3 mile skin/approach.
