i'm not terribly optimistic about climbing forums. as best i can tell, the actual genre is in decline, and not only in climbing. virtually none of the good, younger climbers in my heavily-populated region even have an account on ST or any of the others, so far as i know.

blogging has gone much the same way-- the most durable have been those that serve as a platform for material that either attracts deep-pocket sponsors or serves (as htis forum does) as an advertising platform for its owner.

lot of working building and then managing a forum. the anonymity guarantees that the drama level alone is beyond what you get in typical work-site politics.

Having site management we can trust is.

how do you find this? I trust Chris well enough to not be that concerned as I don't think that there is anyone out there who could do it better. Could you? I would like to find a way to make more women comfortable.

I don't believe having a forum is that easy. And as Bruce said, it requires a critical mass to really get going and be sustained. We have seen heavily moderated forums. And we even had a spin off from this forum. It was a free for all and no longer exists.

and like those kids at the kids table.

the kids at the kids table some times have a good reason to be upset, but other times its just a limited perspective. The parents don't have an easy job.

The climbing world attracts a lot of strong willed people. It could get old very quickly trying to settle everyone's issues. Would you want to do it?

who here would volunteer to be a moderator? And how would you deal with the various situations that we have seen? Speak up if you think that you can do it better and tell us what you think could be done better and how you would accomplish that goal. Its nice to say we need this or that, but it becomes a lot trickier to figure out how to accomplish it. So speak up. What would you have done differently with this forum? Are there people you would not have banned? What do you do about some of their behaviors? What if they don't respect your decisions and willfully challenge you?

I don't believe having a forum is that easy. And as Bruce said, it requires a critical mass to really get going and be sustained.

i can't imagine many things worse than having to serve as a moderator over ST or a similarly organized site. Brutal and thankless.

I think the basic disfunction comes from the forum and from a lot of the regular posters. Certainly the acceptance of a lot of really nasty misogynistic stuff-- and the abuse and ridicule heaped on the women posters who point it out --was part and parcel of the culture for our generations. it just gets reproduced here.

i do share the frustration of those posters, like jan and michelle, who continue to point out that a lot of really nasty behavior is tolerated on this forum, and the policing that does happen seems to follow along personal lines.

this is a privately owned site, it exists largely as a platform for supertopo products, and i can't imagine it's much more than a headache for cmac. and i have no expectation that anything on here is going to get archived (setting aside the question of how much here even deserves that kind of effort).

the kids at the kids table some times have a good reason to be upset,

And much like the analogy... nobody cares... it's not part of the grown up tables lexicon.. thus, has no consequence or bearing on anything at all.

Maybe the next batch of climbers could make this place a more perfect website..

The climbing world attracts a lot of strong willed people. It could get old very quickly trying to settle everyone's issues. Would you want to do it?

Oh, no.... lets change the subject to how really, really difficult things are at the grown-up table....

Either way, none of it of any consequence...

EDIT: And after all, it's mostly the posters that are the problem...

We need to get rid of the problem....

looking more and more like a community all the time

New site, this site, another site... meh.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

This is a private site that apparently reads PM at random for... whatever reason they want to. I think that behavior sucks, and indicative of a larger issue regarding privacy rights in america. However, few people seem to share my concern. That's fine. In the end, other than the tenuous similarity to a larger privacy issue, to me this is a lot of drama for drama's sake.

Oh yeah, FWIW, RC.com is under new management (not a corporation, but a guy and his wife) and the forum is basically a blank slate.

Cheers.

What the fuk is the matter with you whiners???.

seriously? you think jan and michelle are whiners?

dude

i personally expect basically nothing out of ST and my life would carry on if the entire site spontaneously combusted taking all of our posts with it. I hardly ever post anymore. But I also understand and sympathize with Randy's frustration that there seems not to be an effective platform for folks able and willing to make the kind of contributions that Randy has made-- he's done a lot of public access work including translating a lot of stuff relevant to many of us-- if not to you--and done it for free. even if you don't want to read Preuss, you ought to at least recognize the gesture.

I understand that you are happy with an online forum that serves mainly as a place to bs and gossip with friends. nothing wrong with that. it's part of the attraction of the site for many of us.

but it'd also be great if there were a functional online platform for the kind of work that randy's tried to do here or over at susu.

Some years ago I was a high school administrator tasked with dealing with a group of kids who made some bad choices. On the day I received a call from an irate parent berating the school for the severity of the punishments, I was collared by a parent incensed at how the school wasn't taking a stand. Same data, different perspectives.

Regarding banned posters, there is no response that's the right response, nothing ST admin can do that at the end of the day will leave them thinking, "Dude, we called that one right!"

ST admin needs to maintain their purpose for the forum, as the alternative is undesirable. This is a climbers' site with a set of stated standards. If that doesn't work for someone, nothing making them stick around.

ST is fun. Steve is right, there is a variety of topics going on, even if some are tiresome. I can think of 1 forum where it's just a dozen or so people arguing politics non-stop, bickering, trolling, etc. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
At least stuff goes on here, people get together, climb together. For the most part, people are not anonymous cowards hiding and spending their time being as#@&%es. For the most part.
