I regret to share the news that Scott Cosgrove was critically injured in a fall at work yesterday.
I was advised by his workmates (and my good friends) this morning and thought it important to let Scott's friends here on Supertopo know.
He's apparently in a trauma unit in LA and although he's by no means out of the woods, there's indications that he'll survive.
Our thoughts and prayers for his recovery and best wishes to his family, friends and co-workers.

That is rough news.

With all of the risks that we face out there, getting badly hurt on the job is the most tragic, somehow.

Godspeed in recovery Scott.

We're all pulling for you man.

We were already preparing to head south to California today and will plan to visit Coz in the next few days.
Obviously, it's important to avoid misinformation, and I'll do my best to provide accurate updates on his situation as I know more.
At last word a few minutes ago, he's heavily sedated and undergoing surgery for multiple fractures.

Roots- He rigs for television/movies.

So is Coz actually "critically injured" meaning that he's at risk of death/brain trauma or is he just suffering from numerous broken bones requiring sedation between operations? I know it's probably too early for you to know but I have to ask.

But ....!!!!

I've been with Coz when he fell once and hit the ground.

Scott put up amazing routes. Not just super hard but aesthetic at the same time.

I remember one time a few of us were hanging out at Gunsmoke. Bachar was there. As I recall Paul Borne was there too. So Scott walks up and mentions that he had just done some outrageous number of laps on his route Father Figure. You could see the wheels turning in Bachar’s head, he decided it would be a good time for a laps competition on Gunsmoke. I don’t remember who won, I just recall them both totally going for broke, climbing in opposite directions and passing in the middle.

C’mon Scott, you can pull this one out.

That's not necessarily true. If they plan on numerous surgeries they will just keep him intubated and sedated between them. Traumas typically involve an intial stabilization surgery to fix anything life threatening followed by many repair surgeries, sometimes over the course of days or weeks.

I'm sure Scott's family and friends have thought about this already, but I was allowed to play very soothing, healing music while Dan was in a drug induced coma for the month he spent in intensive care. At last report a few minutes ago from Scott's co-worker who's been with him since the injury:
Cozzy's very busted up with multiple fractures and apparently, a shocking sight.
He's described as being in critical condition but expected to live.
He's aware of his surroundings, responsive to verbal stimuli and attempts to open his eyes when asked.
The road to recovery will be long.
That's as much as I can say here at this time.

Chief, we don't really need Scott's location. Just an address we can send cards to that will be ready for him when he is able to view them.

Talked with Coz's co-worker who has been at his side since the accident first happened.

They were working in an airplane hangar, up a little more than 30 feet rigging a line to an I-beam type structure. It is not exaxctly known how, nor is it need-to-know for this discussion, but Coz fell out of the Condor Crane (a tall, cherry-picker kind of boom-arm hoist) and air-balled straight into the cement deck. By the looks of his injuries he broke the fall with a one hand and one leg - getting open (compound) fractures above one wrist and below one knee - transitioned into a face plant, basically shattering every bone in his upper face, including a ghastly open skull fracture - then body slammed, braking all kinds of ribs, etc. The doctors said he basically broke himself in two, with many internal breaks (ribs etc.) but astonisingly, no major organ damage, no spinal issues and aside from swelling on the brain, requiring a draniage tube/stint, no significant brain damage.

While critical, he is expected to "fully recover," though common sense tells us that his mobility will be compromised to some extent by his many injuries/fractures. So who knows how his recovery will play out, but it will, and that is a blessing in and of itself. Perhaps a miracle, seeming that paramedics were so concerned by the severity of his injuries they figured they were transporting a dead man to the hospital.

Doctors have already reconstructed his face, plated his skull and the plastic guys repaired he open wound. External fixators have been rigged up on his leg and arm. His face is twice it's normal size so he's appraently a horrible sight. They also fitted him with a trach to make breating easier owing to the swelling.

So he's all f*#ked up - but will aparently make it.

More as I learn it.

GO COZ!

astonisingly, no major organ damage, no spinal issues and aside from swelling on the brain, requiring a draniage tube/stint, and no significant brain damage.

This is great news. He has the tools to work with. It will be a long road, and he will need friends at his side. I encourage everyone to go see him. Pace yourself though. Often in long term injuries like this one, everyone comes at the outset, and visitation diminishes as you heal.

It is very important to have support in the later stages, as that's when the mental game comes into play. Once you realize how long the road is to rehabilitating your broken body, is the time when despair can easily set in.

So don't all go see him at once. He has many long days ahead and your visit may be that one ray of sunshine on an otherwise stormy day.

My best wishes for Scott's full and speedy recovery.

At full boom, moving a condor and running over a 4x4 piece of lumber, pothole,etc.. can send a shockwave to the basket that can catapult the operator(s) over the safety rails. Think flicking a pea with a plastic spoon. An operator moving the basket too quickly at full stick can do the same.
I've attended the funerals of three co-workers due to this in my 18 years in the industry. This is the reason full body harnesses are now required.

There are many ways to be injured or killed on a movie set. It doesn't matter how this happened to Scott, it only matters that he lives and will recover.

hey there say, john long...

thank you for the update... as to this:

Perhaps a miracle, seeming that paramedics were so concerned by the severity of his injuries they figured they were transporting a dead man to the hospital.

oh my, YES, a miracle...

being alive to have the chance to still be with loved ones...

FOR SCOTT:
as to the face, i remember reading about actor eric flemming and how his face was shattered from an accident, and rebuilt (and this was more than 50 years ago! experimental, at that)... and thus: was still a fine functioning face, he had done for him, and one that could smile back to his friends, and laugh, and get to be himself again...

yes, he had mentioned how he was at first unsure of himself, as this was an uncommon thing to do so long ago, but for those that have seen
him in old rawhide shows, --the rebuilds can be very well done...
how much more so, in this day-and-age...

may all the hard trail that you have to climb and fight through, scott,
be full of grace and love from all those many MANY folks in your corner...
prayers and cheering you onward...

"All f&@ked up but he will live" is great news, as f&@ked up as it sounds. Thanks for the update, John.
I know Scott only as a poster on here but he will be in my thoughts with my running group - we run mindfully and dedicate our runs to those who are suffering in any way. More pragmatically, I will be glad to help if fundraising or donations are needed down the line.

clearly the medical professionals are doing an incredible job

and i hope they have been told something about what an amazing person is in their care

it has long been my opinion that someone in intensive care should have a friend or family member at their bedside 24/7; and this is usually well appreciated by nursing staff so long as you fit in with their professional duties

surely Scott has enough friends nearby to make this happen, but being retired i'm available if anyone thinks that's helpful

(official visiting rules are usually accommodating for such cases and i recently spent several days in Oakland at the intensive care bedside of another old friend recovering from a near deadly assault)

Agree with Cochrane. Someone should be with him 24/7. Dan was the director of a hospital pharmacy. He said if either of us ended up in the hospital it was essential someone be there at all times for a number of important reasons.

Perhaps a small team of family and friends can be created to be with Scott and become familiar with his meds and the various machines he is on. Talking to him can help keep him connected to this world and lets Scott know he is not alone in this.

Since nothing else has been set up yet, feel free to send me cards for Scott. Best to do it now. Big Mike is correct, as time passes sometimes so does the immediacy of the moment. I am in San Diego not far from LA and have the time to deliver them or if preferred by Scott and company I can mail them to him.

My son dove head first ("air balled") about 15 feet onto pavement. He tried to catch his fall with both arms, which he fractured in multiple places in the fall. He then fractured his skull on both occipital lobes. What followed was an incredibly scary 72 hours of observation followed up by more scary days following into weeks of therapy and observation. In the end, he wound up okay but having a dr come into the ICU every 4 hours to look for brain fluid leaking out your sons nose is a bit rough.

A man who worked for me fractured his skull badly on lava falling off the back of a 4 wheeler in Hawaii. He was in a full (non induced) coma for 3-4 days. His recovery took nearly a year and during that time he came back to work then had to leave again because he was still suffering from TBI, manifested by extreme mood swings and fatigue.

My nephew just had a full-speed head-to-head collision playing Ultimate. He was knocked out. He's 9+ months into his recovery and still can't stare at a screen without an instant migraine.

Based on these experiences I'd say that it's very hard to tell what's going to be true in a week based on what's true right now. Keep your fingers and toes crossed, keep up the encouragement, and be ready for what appear to be setbacks but that may turn out to be speed bumps in the path to recovery.

hey there say, PeterNBiddle...

say, good to see a small 'trail-marker' as to the cautions of the future,
that way, as someone gets well, the family/friends, can keep tabs and look out for stuff that is many times never-much taught (for folks to be aware of)...

(i share here, many times about head injury and the after-years effects,
so i do understand what you are saying)...

one step at a time... getting well,of course, first...

but YES, these sign-post are needed, as well... part of an anchor, to understanding what the general public
does not know... AND part of having folks 'be ready' to be there, and
plan ahead so no one goes through those hard battles, alone...
(which sadly, to often happens, in the world)...

edit: this way folks will not get tempted to be disappointed,
which can lead to dejection, and then depression...
as you said--due to the bumps along the way, (i like the speed bump
part you shared)...

:)
thanks for sharing... say, i hope your son and nephew are doing
better/well through the years, as best they can...

Scott,

My sympathies go out to you. I took a 25' grounder out of a tree in 1991 with the top of the tree landing on top of me and couldn't get up or walk away. Broken collar bone and compression fracture of two vertebrae, along with torn abdominal muscles and some permanent paralysis at my left hip. Was two inches shorter after that but was still able to climb decent for several more years before other injuries put me off. Chronic lower back pain still a problem but sure beats the alternative.

Get to see my two oldest grand kids make it to college and retirement looms. I remember being on Higher Cathedral Northeast Buttress around the late eighties or early nineties and seeing you and your partner Middendorf gracefully sailing up Mary's Tears on past us to our left. I'm thinking good thoughts about you now as are all of us here. Get well soon.

Tom, I spent a month with Dan in ICU sleeping between two folding chairs and a trashcan in between to hold up my knees. This hospital did not allow more than two hour visits at a time but got a dispensation from a chief dr. friend. Just saying this to let people know hospital policy can be amended.

I sense that those with Scott right now are hesitant to expand on what's up. That's OK But when you folk need help, contact us. We can be vetted by other friends/climbers. I could not have done it without the help of my big extended family.

Oh yeah, and if you spend the night and the xray person comes in, pretend you are asleep and they will cover you with a heavy cape and you won't have to leave the room.

GO Cozzie!!!

Yeah, some of us already know too much about what it takes to keep alive someone in his condition. You need a very strong stomach with lots of tolerance and respect for the attending professionals...

So long as he has a friend staying by his bedside for emotional support, that's the best any of us can do at this point. I just don't want to see him going through this without an understanding friend at his side. He's a strong guy, but everyone has their limits, and it is much easier to maintain strength in the presence of a caring friend who knows who you are other than a collection of broken parts in a hospital bed.

If you can maintain a positive attitude and learn to read the computer displays: heart rate, respiration rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen level, along with skin color and responsiveness, etc; then you can provide some continuity of understanding about his condition that goes beyond the notes on the computer from one shift to the next and is appreciated by the nurses. The medical professionals are tremendously competent technically, but can't always provide the sort of emotional support and continuity of understanding of a friend who just stays there as the shifts change from one group to another across the days.

Glad to hear that family is by his side. With such a long road ahead, it will take the support of many sustained for quite some time.

Much later, when you are slowly getting back to the world, interpret the stares of family, friends, and strangers as a tribute to your strength and concern for the suffering you are enduring.

In my darkest hours, I found the courage to let people help me. I learned that it was important for other people to have something to give. Please don't hesitate to ask for what you want and need. You have been good to many folks, and they all want to return the favor, just not knowing how.

At last report last night, Scott underwent a couple lengthy surgeries yesterday.
Apparently most of the major "repairs" are done.
Swelling of his face and head is going down and he's beginning to resemble a human being.
Swelling of the brain is subsiding and posing less of a threat.
It's likely Scott will remain heavily sedated for some time and although aware of his surroundings and responsive to stimuli, unlikely to engage in conversation.
His mother and sister are with him and the production company is providing ongoing direct support.
Scott's family feel it's too soon for visitors.
We've communicated to them the level of concern and support expressed by Scott's friends here on ST.
Scott faces a long difficult road and it's probably fair to say that our support will be vital to his recovery in the months ahead as he moves through the acute phase.
Largo and I will continue to do our best to keep all informed and when Scott is able to have visitors.

I've been away from the Taco due to all the negativity, and I stopped Facebook a couple of years ago, so I just heard this from a friend in France. I figure it is worth weighing in here since I'll bet that someone will read this thread to Scott during his recovery.

Very glad to hear that it looks like a full recovery is possible, even if the road is long. I've been climbing in and around southern California, on and off, for over 30 years now and while I've never had the pleasure of developing a real close friendship with Scott, he has been kind to me on many occasions over the years and a source of serious psyche (both direct and indirect). As I've related here before, Scott and Bob Gaines gave me and a friend Bruce the kick in the pants we needed to get up El Cap our first time (and on our first attempt) when we were in danger of psyching ourselves out. That, as many of you know, is a life-changing experience, and I'll never be able to repay him for that friendly encouragement.

I hope his recovery is as quick, clean, and complete as possible given the nature of the accident and the wounds. If anyone can pull through this and come back strong, it's him. Hopefully he will be back on the rocks and in the mountains, with friends, as soon as humanly possible.

Best wishes for a fast recovery Scott. I'm thinking of you.

On this very sad note let me mention something that's warrants restating. I do not know nor do I need to know all the specifics involved in Scott's accident. I simply would like to use this opportunity to say again something we all know but sometimes forget to practice. Even when we are on casual terrain place that piece when you are 15 to 20 ft. out though maybe you have done the route 50+ times. Tie that knot in the end of the rope when TRing. Listen to your inner voice before taking off on that free solo...When mine signals all systems go, I go. If my inner voice says no then I go do something else...I know Scott would encourage all of us to take that extra measure..whatever it may be in any given moment ..it may be the measure that's saves ones life. Again this is in no way a judgment about what happened to Scott. He is still one of my heros no matter what the facts are..he is not diminished in the least...for me.

The lack of a serious brain injury is the best news of all to me. I've had a couple of friends who suffered that.

Those were my thoughts, too. I lost a friend that way, after what seemed like a minor fall (we had a very hard time getting him to agree to seek medical attention at all. Two days later he was dead). When Largo said on Facebook that they had a drain there, I was both worried (because of the terrible possiblities) and relieved (because the doctors were paying attention to it early in the game).

Although now you have time for many things you might have been too busy for in the past.

Wishing you speedy and miraculous recovery and that somehow there's a silver lining somewhere in it

Peace

hey there say... lynne... nice note, perhaps time to get messages for scott now, and not just be worried for him, and wait...

scott--when the time comes for getting folks to read to you...
may you keep on keeping on, in all that you have to do...

take it as a climb, and take each goal, along the way...
meet that challenge as you say: ...

a step a time, gets me closer,it's true...
to all the things, that i hope to one day, enjoy and do...

god bless, hang in there...
some where, somehow, too, you will inspire someone
else, in THEIR fight TO GET WELL, later... :)

hey there say, lynne... am getting a little something ready... will send hopefully on fri or sat...

will some cards as well... been lagging, a bit...
but things are getting back to par, i reckon... :)

for YOU scott:

some days may seem, they never end...
they drag on, just a tedious blend...

perhaps a blend of discomfort-and-pain...
BUT--cherish this thought, it all LEADS to a gain...

you are the captain--no matter, if hospital-staff, be the crew...
you can TAKE charge of your 'innerman', in your tasks, that you do...

sail your self, as if a ship...
ride-out every: lift, roll, or dip...

as the storm subsides...
you will catch glimpses of warm, gentle tides...

bask in those, and catch more wind, to mend...
and hold tight, to each hope and hand, from each friend...

and know that the north star, never falters to 'lead'...
an example of god above, to use, as we need...

sail and master the troubled-waters, charted, that you face...
and later, no matter how later, smile, and thank god, for such grace...

you can't keep supertopo-climbers at bay...
they are sailing, 'round about' FOR YOU, even if/or at play...
you are in our thoughts and hearts, you see...
and if you need anything, well--here they all be!...

hey there say, scott... was just thinking about you:

i was just looking outside at the fall leaves...
realizing how injuries, cause one to feel trapped,
onward through many eves...

the days pass slow, and yep, those eves, as well...
truly, it's just hard challenges, indoors, for a spell...

just, please, scott, be reassured...
as you are stuck behind, many a closed-door...

each day, brings a new bit of sunshine...
whether from family, friends, or, perhaps, even mine...

BUT--these SAME days are bringing HEALING, behind the scenes...
by every resource, ways, and means...

the seasons, may change slow--but seasons, change, they do...
one can't see, exactly how one will conquer--as clues, may be few...

but one CAN soak-in those few clues, AND work on a solid battle plan...
one that will map-out-new-trails, through hospital doors, to fresh air, so grand!...

HERE are my prayers, for you--to do the best you can...
and if that entails, greater, or lesser--STILL, TAKE A STAND!...

you will have more than you dreamed, by each challenge you've conquered...
as inner-strength grows-daily-within, when one DOES NOT GIVE UP--so i've heard...

now, hug a loved-one, touch the hand of a friend...
have a cleansing cry, and perhaps some sobs, and know this:
us supertop-folks, are with you, as you mend...

prayers, scott, keep on keeping-on...
it's the CLIMB, you know--it starts at dawn...

the climb...
takes time...

it finishes, when it FINISHES--as through obstacles, one goes...
cross that finish line, by grace and mercy, prayers and love, and WITH all
you can do, conquer all those woes!...

VICTORIES of all-and-any kind...
are a grand-keepsake and win, so very VERY fine...

Quick update. All the major repairs have been made - arms, face, elbows, legs, head, and so forth. Looks good and Scott's swelling is down. Still has a trach and is heavily sedated because whne they try and back it off he gets agitated and his BP soars. But they say that will subside as his body recovers from the initial shock of getting all busted up and the slow healing starts happening for real. Too soon for visitors but this is a long haul kind of thing so hang in there with him.

I've never had anything close to these types of injuries.. But what I have had has often made me say semi jokingly.. "knock me out and wake me up when it's over"

I would imagine there are drawbacks to keeping someone under for a few weeks but if it's safe enough and keeps the pain away.. wouldn't that be cool to wake up mostly healed past the real bad stuff?

Stating that the production company should "step up pretty big" points to them as a party that is somehow responsible for this accident.

There seems to be some confusion as to the concept of responsibility (i.e. "blame") versus liability in the eyes of the insurer for the film company. I think The Chief was concerned as to whether or not the film company was stepping up to the plate and helping financially.

The film company is liable for anyone that is injured on set. Worker's comp is involved as is the law in this state.
Union members that operate condor cranes and other equipment are highly trained and certified in their proper use and safe operation.
When regulations are followed by certified operators and an accident occurs, the company may be held responsible for many costs incurred by the injured party.
Stunt riggers are currently not required to undergo the same training as SPFX, Grips, ect.. in the use of these machines.

This may change soon. These types of accidents have far reaching effects on the exact qualifications required by operators.

When we work a lot of those jobs we really had to watch our selves.

Because if I got hurt on some of those jobs I was on there was no coverage at all.

We don't know if Scott was a true independent contractor or an actual employee of sorts. Or of course if neither was clear, than he was an employee; there aren't other views under the law as I have understood this as a builder for four decades.

So if he was on the hush-hush he still gets WC under law; California has an "Uninsured Workmens Fund" to cover such situations (which of course are extremely common). This fund is giant and full WC coverage is afforded to the injured. And of course the State eventually goes after the "employer" as established in the case.

And finally, you WANT WC as it is the cadillac of policy; nothing else comes close to it.

That person said hello and introduced me to Coz, and he politely asked about my day out there. I was happy as I had led some crack on the Short Wall in Indian Cove, and he let me go on and on, and then said "Oh yeah....I think that's the one we used to use as a walk-off."

From what Chief says and my own experience in another state the very first steps will significantly determine the long-term outcome of the case.
My and every circumstance is different and similar. The machine will chew, the first lawyer I had was not any help and it cost me tens of thousands of $$ in the final settlement!

Get two good legal opinions at the same time. If you must retain one and use the other through Comp. Keep up to date with both and keep both in the dark as to the other ones’ plans, wins, losses etc. (if the one is a close personal /climber friend then share with her/him)
My injury was very serious and life altering if I had not been a monster .12 puller= sides of body, at the time of my injury ( I was past 40yr ,and not any where near Coz ‘s abilities .) I would be more a ,‘shuffling', than I am today. This is now all past by some years, it took 3yrs and 10 months (5 surgeries) to come 90% back.
it was a very sad chapter

Rough News.

Scott,
You wouldn't remember me but I worked on Bushwacked with AK and the feisty little stunt people. On a practical note, houses aren't very well designed for most people. In construction, I am focused on a design concept called " Universal Design". The idea is to design for people of all ages and abilities. There is a Wikipedia page that describes it well.
Eventually we all need better designed bathrooms, kitchens and more.
I live in central CA now but I'd be happy to volunteer some general contracting and labor if I can. I'm itching to visit J-Tree and would be happy to bring some tools to help ease your recovery at home. The first steps are ramps and single level living with useable kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms.
My long term goal is to partner with people who have faced these issues to help promote this important work. We all need help sometimes in our lives. Whether as children, while parenting, aging or recovering. It makes sense that we all work together to make the 'built-environment' work for people of all ages and abilities. I'm offering. No charge, of course.
Get well.

No significant news to report. I was told today that doctors are in the long and sketchy process of weaing Coz off the sedative. And till that is done and some time has passed, we simply cannot know where Scott stands in terms of his brain injury.

An attempt (I believe today) to ease him off the juice - so the doctors can try out some verbal commands and so forth - wasn't successful because, as happened before, Scott starts jerking about and his BP goes up. But these efforts will continue to go forwards and eventually they will wean Scott off the sedatives.

While we cannot know what the future holds, it is unrealistic to think once the fog wears off, Scott will sit up and start talking. Rather he will likely have to fight his way back into consciousness and self awareness by way of a long rehab.

If there is any good news here, it's that people can and routinely do return from traumatic brain injuries. But it takes time. And our friend took one hell of a blow to the front of his head.

Yes, very much thanks, John. Your post gives a much clearer picture of what is happening in Scott's world of recovery. He is in for a challenge for sure. But, with a great medical support team and much love and support from family and friends, Scott will progress.

Not that it's important, just trying to understand what Scott faces, wonder if he is on propofol and or solumedral. Weaning can be a difficult process for sure. Let's all pray that Scott's body can begin to deal with this and he can move to the next level of healing.

Precluding a miracle, Scott appears to be on a significant journey to healing. Let us all be his companions for the entire trip.

That's truly some sobering news and I am saddened to hear it.

Sometimes we need a slap in the face to realize that these are the good old days that you will look back on fondly. Reach out to the ones you love, and even some that you don't so much, and let them know you see and hear them, and that they make up your present.

Lot's of us here are part of "the club of which you don't want to be a member." Before recovery, there are moments when you look at life in ways that you don't quite get when you are full of health. Stepping back into a day-to-day, it's easy to forget that shadow that's there in the darkness.

As climbers, we know the edge, we know what life has to offer and what it has to take, more than most. Still, until you walk the thin line, it is very hard to imagine just what will go through your mind at that dime-edge time between life and death.

So many folks get caught up on tiny, small things. This is a reminder to see beyond your trivial troubles and to see life for the gift that it brings and the gift that you can give.

Talked to my friend Dave (Scott's workmate) tonight and can offer this update.
Cozzy is still heavily sedated and as Largo said, they're trying to slowly bring him up.
He opened his eyes briefly but he's still a long ways away.
Apparently the swelling on his face is pretty much down and "he looks just like Coz again".
All the major orthopedic work is done except for his right arm and wrist and the're going to do that soon.
Although there's cautious optimism about his brain function, "he's not out of the woods yet".
His family thinks it's still too soon for visitors but will give us the word as soon as possible.
He faces a long recovery and while we all believe in his strength, the future remains uncertain and he's going to need our support.
Positive thoughts and best wishes for a righteous Coz.

Don't forget that aside from a traumatic brain injury, Cos sufered some very grave compound (open) fractures, including both tib/fib of lower leg and a compound femur. And an open fracture above his right wrist (plus a terribly fracrturd wrist) that is still awaiting repairs because the house guy wouldn't touch it. And that's not to mention all the work done rebuilding his grill. Any of those ortho injuries would be enough to keep a good man or woman down for a solid year, if not more.

The isolation from the people and places you love can hurt as much as the accident. very wise, and well said...
i try to share, on 'awareness' months, about head injury issues and such...

but it holds true, as to any injuries that keep one out of the main stream:

IF you don't have a good circle of 'functioning love' friends,
the injured DO get left along the way-side...

starting a whole new path, without your 'usual folks around' is very very empty and strange, and enough to make one feel forgotten... :(

FOR SCOTT:

say, scott... climber folks, here, well knit, and long knowing, as to being your friends, ARE here... some may have to be busy, due to work and family, but MANY MANY are 'open trail' and
REACH out and let them know when you are ready for company...

and:
company will come... >:D<

for largo, as to your quote:

hey there say, john... this is very well needed, good post...
the general public, really has no idea... thank you for sharing:

hey there say, ... for scotts sister and family:
if they can read this, or someone can share:

i been thinking about scott, as to this 'waking up and thrashing about'...
and it makes me sad, for him... :(

i was wondering, if there may be something, or some way to help soothe him, as the sedation wears off...

i mean:
many times after brain injury, i know, folks do not remember what happened, as to accidents, etc... (later, some folks even think, they are fine--it is a tricky, thing, the brain)...

BUT IN some cases, the brain does remember, and even deeper, like subconsciously, as to reaction...

so what i am wondering, if this:

could it be that as he wakes up, the fall shock of falling could be playing through his mind, and if someone is there, perhaps to soothe with words, such as:

we got you... we GOT you know... relax, your's safe now...
we 'caught you'... etc etc...

COULD??? this help him through that... ????
perhaps, one could try????

or, perhaps, he is just FEELING stuck:

that as we all know, can cause a 'panic', and more-so, if one is all druggy... perhaps someone, an intimate team, family, etc,

can try a 'ten times say it' --to make a NEW BRAIN THOUGHT...
to grow as to habit, saying:

hang on, relax, we are fixing you up...
relax, bones are mending, that's why your stuck...

i don't know, just something...
brain really LIKE something to ANCHOR onto...
it is really important and:

the 'say it ten times' etc... well, you know...
or make it into a SOOTHING song...

it soothes, babies, as they learn TO TRUST...

and it also, teaches new lessons...
(you know, one two buckle my shoe, etc, like sesame street
stuff, as to brain repetition... )

praying for AN ANCHOR,for scott...

edit:
oh my, a friend and i were talking today, about brain injuries, and it reminded me:
i neglected to add:
sometimes, too, seizures can be causing someone to
thrash, when they wake up from sedation as well,
it would all depend on the nature of injuries, etc, but i
would think doctors would know then, as they are watching
to see what is going on at these times...

so i was just addressing, 'in general'

sure hope it is not anything serious, as they
try to wake him up... :(

hey there say, chief... as to your project thoughts about the video things:

not sure, but isn't it possible, also to make a youtube page that

if it is????
then, he'd just have to have someone sign him in to it, and he could all the videos that folks would load up there...

trouble, is, i reckon, though that everyone would have to have the sign in page???

is that kind of thing possible?

would it not clog a phone, then, as you 'load only one at a time'
?????

i do not know a lot about how youtube pages uploads, users sign in, stuff
works, so it was just a wonder???

BUT, i got the idea, from a gal at a fan-site and SHE puts
up videos of the places that the gals visit, but
i think folks have to sign in, or HAVE THE LINK,

From the descriptions people have given about his condition I think it's safe to assume this isn't something that he is going to "wake up" from. You're looking at slow progress each day while the brain heals and you never know just how much or what kind of damage was done until enough time (not typically just days).

*edit* I want to clarify that by saying he isn't going to "wake up" I mean it won't be a sudden recovery, not that he won't recover.

Hi All,

Its Dave Lane Here. I Have never posted on supertopo before or for that matter anywhere else. I'm so old schools, no Facebook, no Twitter, Linkedin don't bother.

Scott got such a kick that I'm the only guy with no aps on my phone.

I was with Scott on the job and asked Perry to post about Scott's accident. I just wanted to say thank you for all the support for Scott. Scott's Mother and Sister check in on the thread and its a big boost to them to see Scott's climbing community sending so may good Thoughts.

There were five of us on the rigging crew including Scott. We were pre-rigging to fly camera for the production when the accident happened. All of us were first to attend to Scott on the ground. It was a truly horrible thing to see a friend so badly injured.

Just a word of causation, posts about the how and why of the accident, workman's comp and productions stepping up to the plate are kind of hard to read for those of us who are still very much living the moment and keep in mind Scott will hopefully be reading all your supportive post soon.

I did not really intend to say all these things but there you go, I guess its starting to really weigh down on me now. After the accident the Producer shut down the set. It was really deviating for all the crew. A lot of the crew witnessed Scott falling including the five of us just fifteen feet away.

After a couple of days the producers polled the crew to see if anyone wanted to finish the project. We all decided it was better for us to be busy than to focus on the tragedy. We did the job and I think Scott would proud of the end result.

The Production house has been looking after Scott's Sister and Mother very well and the producer and owner of the company have visited Scott on a daily basis.

Scott's condition is still stable and unchanged. They are trying to bring him to the surface slowly reducing the sedation meds and trying to reduce his reliance on the ventilator. At present Scott's not having any interest in joining us. The docs are concerned but say that Scott will decide when its time. It could be minuets, hours, days or even months, only Scott knows when it will be time to join us.

Scott is still in an ICU ward with a very dedicated team looking after him. Scott faces a very long road to recovery and the potential for brain injury is still very unknown.

Scott's in a room full of machines with no room for anything personal, so Please keep up the good thought, hold onto those cards, record the videos msg and pray to your gods and when the time comes that Scott decides to join us I think he will get a big boost by your support. I know it has already Helped Betty and Lorrie.

Best,

Dave

Scrubbing my flagstone floor tonight and listening to Pandora....James Taylor just came on with "Shower the People You Love With Love." What a classic and what we all need each day. Special love tonight to Scott, and all the people we care about in our lives.

But to be true to my best friend, gotta shower even the sandpaper people in our lives with love.

Yes, thanks to Dave.

I'm a big believer in the idea that our bodies know better than anyone what we need at a given time. If he wants deep rest and breathing help to get it, then that's what he really needs in spite of the medical people wanting quick consciousness and cure.

Again, everything I've read says that people in deep comas often remember what is said around them so act as though he can hear and register every word. Keep the conversation positive, and reassure him from time to time that you know he needs rest, that he's doing fine for the conditions, and that you expect a full recovery.

best wishes coz for a full recovery, and to all of us who work off the deck, take the time to use your safety gear, i'm guilty of it myself, its a pain in the ass to work high with a harness and lanyard, it's bulky and slows you down, and it's easy to blow it off, we recently had a fatality here on the eastside with a scaffold accident. take the time, and if you a superviser/ contractor make sure your guys are working safely.cheers paul linaweaver

Thanks for your update, Dave. Your post is a very sobering one. Having spent 25 years in health care and spending a month in ICU with Dan I now see what
our friend, Scott, is challenged with.

I so agree with Jan about the patient hearing what you are saying. I and many family members spoke to Dan when he was in an induced sleep state. I could see by his face he was hearing. Wonder if Mom and Sister could read to Scott all the encouraging comments from his friends here? Maybe you already have.

For those of you that pray, redouble your prayers.

Still checking this thread daily and keeping Scott in my thoughts and prayers. Having my husband recently in an induced coma for three days I can understand the trials that Scott's family is experiencing, even though I was fortunate that it was only for three days. Scott,

You probably forgot what my husband and I would say while flailing on a climb with you. "Beam me up, Scotty". I'm sure no one else has ever saif that before - HA.

Well, we would like to beam you up to us....or perhaps better to your family, colleagues, and closer friends. We still delude ourselves and count you as a firend. We continue to keep the torch alive.

Apparently Cozzy's been moved out of ICU to a pulmonary ward.
He's responding to what's going on around him but still not clear on why he's in the hospital or exactly who's who.
Probably standard stuff if you land on your head from thirty feet.
All in all, he's making good progress and a complete recovery is still expected.

Am I wrong in thinking that it's probably a good thing that, for now, Coz is "still not clear on why he's in the hospital"? What I mean is, given the extreme nature of his accident and injuries isn't it probably for the best that he doesn't also have the emotional trauma of remembering and fully realizing everything just yet?

That said, I am of course pulling for him to eventually regain all cognitive function.

Thanks to everyone providing the ongoing updates. It's great to hear these encouraging reports.

Much of that missing memory in the near vicinity of the accident can be very related to any meds administered during the initial response, too. I didn't quite realize that until the last pharmacology update in continuing ed....and we like it when patients have no memory of the very intrusive work that has to be done to initially stabilize them.

All the best to Scott and his family.
Got a lot of thx and respect for him.
He recently before my trip to Yosemite, gave me some advice about some gear I had posted pics of.
Tha advice could have possibly saved my life.
Scott doesn't know me except by Facebook.
I have never met him. But there he was, an old pro helping out the new guy.
Thx you again Scott!!
You rock.
Sending huge healing vibes man.
All the best to your family during this time of stress and strain.
Hope to meet ya sometime.

Latest report from people close to Cozzy as of this AM.
He gave a visitor a thumbs up on Friday.
They've downsized his trach so he can speak better.
Still confused and was insisting Saturday he had to leave.
Good day today, he talked a lot and got pretty emotional when told the names of everyone asking about him.
Perked back up and asked for ice-cream.

Oh Yeah! Coz is definitely on the Mend. Difficult to express in words what this whole thing of injured warrior, community coming together, friend healing has meant. Life is a trip. Elevators, escalators, grand ascents, incidents, discoveries, recoveries. But mostly friendships, experiences and lives well lived.

Talked to my friend Fletcher who was there when Coz fell and has been with with him much of the time since and keeping me up to date.
Fletcher showed Coz videos sent by a number of us yesterday and although he's still pretty muddled, he reacted pretty strongly to our messages.
I received a picture of Coz taken today and he's a tough sight to behold.
He's taken a beating, faces a long stretch of rough terrain and will need all of our love and support as he finds his way forward.

hey there say, chief and all...

got the get well quilt done, with all the names on it... will hope to send this tomorrow... so it should get to the p.o. address by
this week after the weekend...

hopefully, something nice to see in the room and later, to hang on to,
through the tough times... and lastly, as a victory blanket for his bed, when he gets home...

thanks for the update...
prayers and god bless...

HERE IS THE QUILT, FROM US ALL...
HOLLY SENT THE T-SHIRTS TO USE...

AND HIS SISTER LORI,
SENT A LIST OF THINGS THAT HE LOVES, AND PLACES THAT HE
HAS GONE... :)

let's all just pray that these bits of love, will stretch out for
the hospital stay, and
bring comfort, for years to come...

a big thank you to my brother, chappy, for the funds to mail this...

and a ps:

thank you to those that contributed for t-shirt idea bits...
say, mouse, the photos that you shared, DID get printed, by my buddies,
but they came
out very tiny, as in inches...

there IS a photo of scott, on here, too...
just that it is one of the tiny white patches, :)

AND LILABIENE... your saying that you wanted added, is getting written right now, on the BOTTOM GOLD ROW... :)

AND GET WELL, TO SCOTT IS GETTING written on the hospital squares...

will put a note to family:
if anyone there, WANTS to sign their name on it, too...

wow, please do!!!!!

permanent marker...
only missed any newer names...

He's taken a beating, faces a long stretch of rough terrain and will need all of our love and support as he finds his way forward.

Let me add my +10,000 to this, and also my $0.02.

It's easy to be sympathetic and supportive in the immediate aftermath of a major accident like this, but if my own experience is anything to go by, the need for that support is actually greater later on, than right away.

If you're strong, and used to suffering, as Coz surely is, then the first stages of the battle are, on one level, just another challenge, another wall to be climbed, and you throw yourself into it. Sometimes you even relish the battle.

But as the days turn into weeks, and the weeks into months, and you lay there still crippled, still trying to psyche yourself up for another day of lonely rehab... That's when someone dropping by with some home-baked cookies (or a bottle of scotch, or just to chat) or someone phoning or emailing really makes a difference.

When Coz is sent home from the hospital, it'll be easy to say "Thank god he's going to be okay." But if his injuries are as serious as they sound, he won't "be okay" at that point, and he'll continue to need the inspiration of your support for a long time after that.

many a good man/woman, is then lost, :(
sadly, after hearty fights... (not all, of course, but yes, very many)...

i was so glad to know that big mike, had a good strong trail, for when he got home, but then, thankfully, he WAS and is now able, to GET outside and
into the 'mainstream' of the life's flow...

that, when not possible, is a whole other MAJOR situation to try to tackle...
and worse yet, if a head jury or seizures, 'haunt one' and folks, feeling award, THEN slowly turn away and onward to 'more fun folks' to be around...

:(

let's get ready for how ever long, our 'piece of the quilt' here, scott, will care to be GLAD to have us all around, along with family and friends...

Last time I pitched off a roof and landed with my face onto a metal table, my brother cracked us both up by saying "you need a shirt that says " I survived Mr Toads Wild Ride". I only had my orbital bone sticking straight out my face. Every time I'd move my jaw the bone would wiggle around and blood would flow. Put a bandaid on it and went back to roofing for the rest of the day as it looked like there would be rain. I'm clearly not quick enough to figure out something that witty for you Scott, but like everyone else, happy to see you are on the path to health again. Congrats on surviving Mr Toads Wild Ride. I went to visit Scott yesterday and was really happy to see how well he is doing. He still has a long road ahead, but he is at a great facility where they are concentrating on his rehab. They are beginning daily three hour physical therapy sessions, and his right leg and left arm have already been cleared of their no weight bearing status! Pretty amazing considering what he went through!!
We visited for a good long time. His memory is still pretty rough, but he did know who I was and we talked about all sorts of things ... Childhood memories, mountaineering, love, family, life, politics, etc. And, he made me laugh several times :) I left feeling very positive about his progress!!

Holly,

Thanks for the update.
Your report is consistent with an email I received a few days ago from people close to Scott
He's apparently in a great facility and has a dedicated team of professionals working on his rehabilitation.
The word miraculous has been used a number of times and by all accounts this is accurate.
With Fletcher back in NC, I've lost that direct connection with Cozzy's situation and expect to talk to others close to him and Cozzy directly in the next few days.
I've been told he'll be in the rehabilitation center for the better part of six months if not longer.
My own plan is to head down from Canuckistan closer to the week of Christmas and visit Cozzy as much as he and his caregivers will allow.
Maybe fit in a bit of cragging in Josh while I'm at it.
I expect we're approaching a time when others will be able to visit Scott and report out with direct accounts and some pictures.
I'll do my best to contribute.

It has been shown that playing music familiar to folks with various mental traumas will activate the neural pathways that were forged when the patient was first loving the familiar Music.
Even folks that did not speak or respond for years would come to life and remember stories from days gone by upon exposure to Their favorite tunes.
The yogis believe that these pathways (aka samscara or psalm scars) are like stream cut valleys in the mind stuff (Chitta) that can easily be cleared of the debris that may fill them, or in the case of injury or disruption to the mental pathways, reconnect and re wire them.

hey there say... just a bump...

holidays are coming--and we sure do not want depression hanging around,
when we can pray for hope, and help perhaps by letting his family know,
we are open to send any cards, if it is not
in the way...

hang in there scott...
you are not forgot...

it's just that we know...
sometimes we got to wait, and let things flow...

but here we are, now...
and how!...

waiting to see whatever your needs may be...
just holler out: 'one, two, three'...

and we'll do our best...
and the rest:

is then up to you...
to climb this through...

the best way that you can DO!!!!

HAPPY pre-christmas, no matter the fog or haze...
happy pre-christmas, as you work through these days!...

spring will come...
and may it be a 'good run'...

that much closer to victory...
and MANY more, for you to see!!...

hey there say, all... bump...
hope his family is bear-up, as well...

you are not forgotten scott...
we hope and pray that your ' fight ' is going at it's best...

god bless...
'tis near the season, to make sure folks know that they REALLY
are loved and cared for...
in the busy world of day to day stuff, sometimes folks don't
get the chance to let folks know...

hang in there...
may spring bring new hopes... as the new year changes and shifts
to 'new growth'...

does anyone KNOW if he is able to have cards, or, if any of his
get well notices have helped him... ?

should we send more, or wait a bit?
thanks for any info...

Scott,

May you have peace and find strength in your soul. Life dishes out all kinds of unwanted challenges.

Shortly after your accident a dear friend was in a bad motorcycle crash. Tom was broken badly and has had surgeries, plates, and screws to put him back together. Last week his arm needed to be redone with bone from his hip and stronger plates. It is a rough setback, he is one of those "always busy and on the go" guys.

This is extremely hard for him, more so because of how he has lived his life. I know Tom is getting stronger in his mind, in his being, in ways new to him.

I don't know you, simply a little about you. The concern from all these folks says a lot, how much you mean to this community.

I wish you healing.

Visited Scott yesterday at his facility where is he re-habing
We visited for a couple of hours;.....it was great to see him and he is doing remarkably great ...considering the severity of his injuries. He has made remarkable progress...but I'm sure it's come from working very hard most all day everyday with therapists helping him;...it's been a hard go so far, and much more hard work in the near and distant future, I am sure.
As for his tramatic brain injuries;.....he seems to be doing remarkably well in this area as well.....I am no doctor, so I really cannot say much about the details of his mental and physical recovery so far. All I can say it was great to see him, the surgeons have done a remarkable job in "putting him back together", and we talked about what Cos and I usually talk about;.....climbing, our friends, joshua tree stuff, life, liberty , and the pursuit of happiness as we see fit....I've know Scott about 30 years now;...a long time. He is a strong, hearty, determined dude with lots of work ahead of him, and lots of adventures in his future. He appreciates all his friends love and concern, prayers and well-wishes, and looks forward to continued recovery and the love and support of his family, friends, and the climbing community.
It was damn good to see him and speak with him;......I am very fortunate to have such an awesome and amazing pal. When we chatted he was in his wheel chair but he's already starting to walk. He's walking with a walker and even walking without any aid for sort distances at this time. I told him he needs to start posting some pics of his handsome mug for the visual learners out there;...he said he will soon.........
I visited an up-beat, strong, brave, psyched, hopeful Scott Cosgrove;......badass and moving forward, and ready to meet any and all challenges that come his way;........the Scott we all know so well and love. I look forward to our next visit;...it will be soon!

I know a few of his friends from joshua tree have visited him lately..
He seems to be doing well, progressing with his therapy, getting stronger, and thinking about what he is gonna do when he get released by his doctors and therapists from the rehab center. I talked to him yesterday on facebutt chat;..he seems upbeat, happy to be alive and progressing well, and looking forward to getting back into "mainstream" life. He was talking about looking forward to driving a car again, and seeing his friends and getting back out and about. He talked about trying to attend the Gilje fundraiser;..which would be totally wonderful if he could. It is amzaing and so very awesome that he survived such a horrible accident, and that his recovery has gone so amazingly well.

c/o 'Pass the Pitons' Pete's post (copy and paste):

Editor: We’re honored to interview you and we do appreciate your time. Thanks for speaking with us, Scott.

Scott Cosgrove: Thank you, talking about myself has always been a great pleasure;;;))) It's something I can still remember, most of the time.

Editor: Where are you originally from and how old were you when you knew climbing was for you?

Scott Cosgrove: I am from the San Francisco Bay Area, a little town known as Belmont. We had large oak trees in the back yard and open space. I started climbing as a kid. I was about 12 years old my first time, when I actually did some real rock climbing.

When I was 14, I started climbing full time. We lived close to Yosemite a (three hour drive) and many of the older kids went there on the weekends. I use to spend summers up there. Yosemite was besides Castle Rock near my hometown my first experience with rock.

Editor: Who were some of your first climbing teachers?

Scott Cosgrove: I did a lot of climbing with a lot of people. My friends in high school helped a lot. But at 18, I drove to Yosemite and climbed with Werner Braun. He showed me how the real pros were doing it, put me in my place, scared the crap out of me and was my friend.

Finally, I started getting better and climbing with Ron Kauk and John Bachar. I'd say those three had the most effect on my climbing. Ron was just natural and went to the same high school as I did. It was such an honor to tie in with. He would just float really hard boulder problems and I'd do them to because it looked so easy. Bachar was so dedicated and cared so much about style. Ron taught me to be mellow and John was a pro and more serious.

Editor: You’ve established big walls in Yosemite, the Yukon Territories and South America’s Patagonia as well as conducting guided trips to Jordan, the Himalayas, Alaska, Canada, Thailand and Australia; you have amassed over 400 first ascents worldwide.

That alone is spectacular! This includes a first free ascent of the Grand Wall in Squamish Chief, British Columbia.

What was it like to travel the world and getting to climb in some of the most spectacular places in the world?

Scott Cosgrove: Traveling around world was a dream come true. I'm big on history and many of the places were incredible. The climbing was also amazing. Patagonia was quite back in 1989 and we had no cell phones, all alone going for broke on the Central Tower. In Jordan, we traveled to Petra and the Dead Sea, drank tea with a Bedouin tribe, and climbed big wall sandstone in the incredible Wadi Rum. In Nepal, I was touring the Buddha monastery on the way to Everest.

I really have come to notice most of the world is pretty close to being the same. People want safety, friends and family. I also learned how amazing and unique the US is. I really wanted to kiss the ground every time I flew home. I'd have to say that the Yukon in Canada is probably one of the last truly wild places left in the world. We’d climb a big wall, freeing a first ascent and saw animals and terrain that have never seen humans. It's purely magical.

Editor: You’ve made more than 28 ascents of El Captain, and have guided El Cap 10 times. You’re also well known for doing the first free ascent of the South Face of Yosemite’s Half Dome, Southern Belle, in 1987. What drew you so powerfully to climbing, Scott? What is it about this sport that drives you emotionally?

Scott Cosgrove: I always wanted to climb. Trees and buildings, anything I could find. My parents were busy people and I had time after school. I tried every sport, but climbing I was good at. I decided at 14 that I wanted to dedicate my life to climbing. I did everything I could and just trained. It gave me friends, family and my own tribe. Emotionally, climbing made me who I was, as a man.

I was shown how scared or how tough I was. The thing I loved the most was being totally absorbed by the climb. Being in a cool location and just flat out being happy. The Southern Belle was a dream I always had, when Dave Shultz asked me to free it with him, I dropped everything and went to the Valley. It was the scariest, most beautiful thing I've ever done. I had never been that at my limit. Back then almost 30 years ago, it was the most feared climb in the Valley. I hear Holland say it wasn't that bad and certainly not a death route. It just cracked me up, how could a 300 fall over dikes and ledge be anything else but death. Pretty cocky and youthful, but just a sign of how petty people can get.

Editor: Can you tell our readers about winning an Academy Award in 2005? How did that come about? And which movies are we talking about? Did you enjoy the experience?

Scott Cosgrove: I was asked to joined my friend Mark Chapmen to work in the Czech Republic and fly a camera in three dimensions over a huge movie set for the movie Van Helsing. After twenty eight non-stop days, our rig was built. It was 120 feet high, 500 feet across and 200 feet across, and had 35,000 feet of tech rope involved. We succeeded in filming the point of view of the bat brides in the movie. That year we built the same rig on Cat Women, Miracle on Ice, and Troy. They awarded us the technical achievement for the Academy awards. It was given to the entire flying camera team.

Editor: How did it feel to receive an Academy Award? Not many climbers can say that, it must have been a wonderful moment.

Scott Cosgrove: Well, I was only part of a team, but it was flattering. I think people thought it was mind blowing, but I was just doing my job. It was less a wonderful moment than I thought. I've won some other awards, including a SAG award for STUNTS and some others. It's nice and I'm proud of it. Still, it's not climbing and prestige never really got me going. People just don't know and I never go around telling anyone.

Editor: A SAG award is really impressive. So, what made you create your own guiding company?

Scott Cosgrove: I had been making a living as a guide for about 12 years and got lucky. I was asked to work with a special forces team in rock climbing. This was 1989 and the group was a very secretive and intimidating bunch. Through the years they grew tired of the person running the classes and wanted to hire me solo. I had moved out of Joshua Tree and back to the Bay Area. I started my guide service to train civilians and the military. Now, I'm exclusively working with the military.

I have a way of teaching climbing that uses very simple and easy to remember technique. It was nice to be my own boss and have the freedom to teach climbing as I saw fit. I also have worked for myself ever since. It's really challenging and rewarding. You have to be honest and let people go, but it's just doing your job.

Editor: Which were some of your favorite first ascents (routes/grades) that are close to your heart?

Scott Cosgrove: I'd say Central Tower of Paine in Patagonia was incredible, plum grade 6 A4, 5.12. We spent two and a half months and only climbed on four days. We lost our tent in an avalanche and all our survival gear. We made a desperate summit bid, climbing ten new pitches on the last day and rappelling in 100 mile an hour wind storm.

Freeing the Muir Wall grade 6, 5.13, was incredible. We wanted to free El Cap by fair means, not resorting to any tricks like rappelling from the top. We climbed about ten new pitches do the upper dihedral - center of El Cap- after 54 days and 21 nights of effort. We couldn't free thirty feet, however.

Also the Southern Belle on the South Face of half dome grade 6, 5.13a is really the best route I've ever done. If it had more bolts, one of the most popular anywhere. It's as good as anything in Yosemite.

Editor: How is your recovery coming along? How are you feeling now?

Would you like to share what happened to you?

Scott Cosgrove: I'm recovering well, but it's a long road and a very tough climb. After getting away with 35 years of climbing, it's ironic to get hurt falling at work.

Editor: Do you have any data for us as to how things will progress health-wise? Many of your fans and students are rooting for you.

Scott Cosgrove: I'm walking already and faster than I thought. I'm doing 5 hours a day of rehab 6 days a week. So, in three months we should know a lot more. I'm hoping just to be able to walk and ride my bike…climbing is just a goal at this time.

Editor: Okay, we’ll switch gears and talk about things you enjoy doing!

Do you like books? Which ones are your favorites? Which are your all-time-favorite movies? What kind of music do you enjoy? I don’t you’ve ever been asked this, so it will be a fun treat for your fans!

Scott Cosgrove: I'm a very avid reader. I've read books my whole life and studied poetry. I read many history books mostly about the first and second world wars. I also read fiction from the good writers. The classics are always on the list. I never had money for a TV and electronic devices were not popular in my day. It was story-telling and reading that filled our days. I can really have conversations about a lot of things. Books have really expanded my mind to the world around me.

I also work and watch movies. I've been working on them pretty steadily for the last 14 years. I do love watching them, but not so much the big action ones I work on. I like stories that are character and story driven. The ones I like the most over the years, The Deer Hunter, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, California, Something about Everything.

Editor: Would you like to add a few words about how climbing is changing so fast and will continue to change? It seems the focus now is on speed, breaking records and grabbing sponsorships.

It seems like more and more folks are joining indoor climbing gyms. How do you feel about climbing gyms, Scott?

Scott Cosgrove: I think climbing started to change as I kind of became more remote. The modern climber seems to want to promote themselves as much as climb. They would focus on what I really always called tricks. I climb a route 3 minutes faster than you and now I’m in the New York Times, was the deal. It was instant glory and sponsorship. In my day, people dream of the first ascent, for being good in every type of climbing.

I tried to hone every skill down to a point where I could go out on virgin rock and find my way. A first ascent often ended up being a waste of time. But some stay with me to this day. My friends who climbed with me on those great adventures are still my brothers.

We shared adventure, suffering fear and finally relief and happiness. I only got press from things that I considered first ascent. The circus tricks gets lots of press, but are really contrived to the actual process of walking up to a virgin wall and climbing it.

I like climbing gyms for training and to hang out with climbers. It's not really outdoor climbing but it makes you strong. The trickster, proxy flyers and slack walkers are great thrill seekers, but full on old school climbers… who knows. If you don't leave a mark as a climber, your climbing is mostly forgotten.

Editor: What are your thoughts on the preservation of nature and climate change?

Scott Cosgrove: Well, global warming is a scientific fact, it is not a belief. The big money folks try to make a political issue out of science, but it's purely idiotic when it comes to the realization that the Earth's health is more important than profits and responsibility. I think the warming climate has obviously changed the high mountains more than the rocks.

The glaciers are melting and disappearing. I've seen it first hand in my years. The lack of knowledge of the Earth and preservation of nature attached to religious or party affiliation is a complete misconception of reality. My hope is that the people will see that they are being manipulated by big money, using what they hold dear. Basically the world is changing and all I can say, is get out and see the beautiful places before they’re no longer there.

Editor: Do you have a few words of advice about climbing that your fans can use as pearls of wisdom from you?

Scott Cosgrove: I would say don’t be competitive, as there will always be somebody better. The person to be competitive with is yourself. Try to improve slowly and safely over time. That way you will get a little better every day.

Footwork takes a lifetime to master and most never do. I would also never scare yourself, never let yourself get into a situation you can't get out of. If you climb safely every day, climbing will seem safe and fun.

It was always my dream to push the limits of climbing and I achieved it for a short time. It came, because I had the ability … but also the hard core training it took. I did it because it made me happy. It was all about being happy.

Finally don't spend time thinking about what everybody thinks. They tend to be envious, jealous and greedy. They're not worth your time.

Editor: We truly appreciate the chance to interview you and learn a bit more about you.

Thank you for dedicating your life to climbing, for sharing your vast knowledge with countless students and for all the hard work you’ve put into your career.

We wish you a speedy recovery.

Scott Cosgrove: It's my pleasure, I always wanted to be a climber and just followed the voice in my head to follow my dreams. I love to share with people and hope some of my thoughts help others.

Climb safe and walk away, live to climb another day. Thanks for having me and good luck with your venture.

Nice interview, and great to see Scott recovering to the point where he can hold interviews! The initial news was pretty grim. Now he's re-habbing, and looking like a better recovery an initially expected is within grasp. Good on ya, Scotty!

I spoke with Scott at the end of May.

He was doing remarkably well and getting ready for discharge from his rehab situation. Over the phone he sounded completely himself: a big improvement. He got his driver's license which is a thumbs-up on the cognitive side of things. They have rebuilt him physically, nevertheless he'll be in pain for a long time. All in all a stunning recovery which will continue I'm sure. We talked about specific details concerning some of his first ascents, recalled old memories and laughed.

This is great, sounds like he's doing very well.

Scott taught me a lot about leading over the course of a few days many years ago. Much the same advice he gives at the end of the interview and it has served me well.

I especially like that part where he says, "My hope is that the people will see that they are being manipulated by big money, using what they hold dear". He's obviously a lot like the people that I like to hang with.
