Boy, talk about picking the wrong day to go on a hike!

http://news.yahoo.com/volcano-erupts-central-japan-hikers-reported-injured-105042669.html

It sounds like this peak is about as popular as San Antonio (Baldy) for day hikes.

"Crisis management officials in Nagano prefecture say thirty-two people had
serious injuries, including at least seven who lost consciousness were
awaiting rescue"

..in the lodge a short distance from the erupting vents at the summit of
Mt Ontake. Stones falling from the sky were preventing 1st responders from
reaching some of the injured.

Many hikers were able to escape the danger zone with the protection
of helmets. Note the build up of ash on the trail railing.

This image was tweeted about one minute before the eruption.

No contact with the sender since.

So this eruption was so stealthy that seismic warning
system did not alert? Someone may be asked to do
some explaining at the volcano dept over there.

....
Hikers video & scramble down Mt Ontake trail running from the Pompeii like approaching ash cloud under a blue sky!
They are overtaken and enveloped.
Ash gravel can be heard raining down.
Suddenly gets very dark.
Coughing begins as the video cuts.

Sincere condolences. Even Everest did not take this many last April.

Pyroclastic flow! Is there any kind of portable gear that
exists to protect against that kind of emergency? Something that a day
hiker might reasonably carry up a suspect dormant volcano.

Thinking those single use fire escape hoods might help, but what
if all the O2 has been pushed away by a great belch of volcano gases?

In a true pyroclastic flow, you're screwed. Temps are unsurvivable short of having something like a spacesuit. Maybe not even then, as they can reach over 1000F.
This might have been more of a really bad ashfall, with some larger ejecta mixed in.
Very tragic.
