Vision man...ya gotta have vision...
Topic Author's Original Post - Sep 23, 2014 - 12:29pm PT
I know there are a few here who hung with the incomparable Inez D. (Gnar Gnar) a few years back. Mutual friend emailed me this morning that her phone # was reporting disconnected and no response on email. Wondering if there is cause for concern. Anyone here still in touch?

Thx!

Yup, Drixelius. Tried Ghost...he, like myself, has sort of dropped off the communications the last few years. Just looking for anyone that might have stayed in touch.

Note: I don't have any reason to believe there's cause for concern. Could be as simple as changing phone companies, or just dropping the phone all together and busy not emailing (Gads!!).

I met Inez on rec.climbing many decades ago, and eventually spent a lot of time with her. Incredible person, and a good friend with whom I lost touch when she retired from work and climbing and moved to the east coast about ten years ago.

I think she was working with Allen Steck on a writing project not too long ago, so maybe he knows.

Thanks stich, but those are all old. (last log into MP was 2008)

I also met her via rec.climbing a hundred years ago, and did a buttload of climbing with her until she moved out to West By-God. Maybe I'll turn this into a Gnar-Gnar photo thread.

I suck at distance relationship maintenance type sh*t, so I have no excuses. Just figured here might be a good place to check for random connections.

Really just bumping. Thanks!!!

Correct, I believe they're both dead. She left Berkeley over 10 years ago, so that was probably done quite a while back. There was a newer gmail addy that got no response as well. Still looking...thanks for the info and replies so far. :-)

I last saw Inez at Al STeck's 90th birthday about 3 years ago. She was living in Florida, had left West Virginia. She of course left UC Berkeley about 13-14 years ago, I believe.

Al Steck knows where she is and her email. slimfox@att.net. HIs daughter would also know, ssteck@suddenlink.net

Simply email Al Steck and his daughter and you will eventually get the full deal. She would never go out of contact with Al. If that is unfruitful, let me know.

I sent an email earlier. Thanks Peter. Actually climbed with Allen (with Inez) a bunch of years ago. He's probably the oldest guy to climb The Mace in Sedona (at 69). Don't recall if I've met his daughter, but have met Lee a few times.

We'll get to the bottom of this yet! :-)

Not sure, but I think her mom, The Widow Drixelius, as she coyly termed her, and being back in Austria, might be needing some help from Inez. But it's only a guess. Inez has lead a variety of lives at this point.

Bump.

I'm actually the one looking for Inez.

She moved to Florida three-something years ago, and at that point pretty much gave up climbing. She met a bunch of new people and took up kayaking up the local rivers and streams. They'd pack camping gear and head off into the wilderness for several days at a time, where only small boats can go. Apparently Florida is good for that kind of thing.

Her mom died at least three years ago, although she was still visiting family back in Germany once a year. I'm hoping she's off traveling somewhere but it's unusual that she didn't tell me she was changing her phone number, and hasn't answered my email.

Okay, over N out.

Ran into Inez in the Dolomites in 2006. We were walking past the base of Torre Grande in the Cinque Torre, picking up our packs, and I see this woman with a tech tee on, English writing, from a comp in Berkeley. Small world.

We chat briefly, then meet later at the hut for food and truth serum...(a liter of Vino tinto or three). Great to see her.

Dimly recall her at the City of Rocks a few years back too...maybe with Troutboy, etc.

Tell her hi. Hope she's well!

Ditto here. Wreck.Climbing hookup. Inez rocks!!!

Inez and Allen in Camp Verde on the drive up to climb the Mace in Sedona.
Allen is probably the oldest climber to knock the Mace off at 69 years if I had to guess. And he led the last pitch onsight!

Hey E!! Whassup! Hope you're doing well.

I think LS reported a few posts back that he got in touch with the G-G.
Hopefully she'll check in here, because if she doesn't we'll ALL have to call her!!

I started on wreck.climbing way early on (about '91 or so). Met and climbed with a bunch of assorted crazy people and had a blast. By the time it sort of wound down it had sort of run it's course and I wasn't a playah there no more. But some good memories for sure.

How 'bout that loose cannon on the Column in '94?

Inez high up on the Steck-Salathe. Brutus is somewhere above, dragging rope with him. The sun is on it's way down and I think the thrill is gone. :-)

We topped out at midnight. The day before, Bruce and I had hoofed to the top of Sentinel loaded down with all the goodies for the next night's bivy, so after we summmited, we fished out the goods, broke out the wine, started the fire, grilled prawns and chicken and celebrated in style! Fantastic day with two incredible people!

Can you PM that info as well. Also lost touch with her about 4 years ago. I get to Florida a couple times a year to paddle, so if that's what she is into these days, would love to look her up again.

Hello old friends,

Lord Slime forwarded me this thread and I am touched and thrilled that so many of you remember me and still care about me enough to chime in. I am delighted that all of you appear well, happy and still energetic about climbing and posting.

I am now living in Northwest Florida, loving the weather, the beaches and my kayak...and my dog. Apart from the ridiculous fact that the undersigned will turn 70 (!!!) in December, things change. Nevertheless, despite cronehood I am still kicking vigorously.

A marvelous walking safari in Kenya (100 miles in 10 days) was my latest adventure and now paddling season is kicking in. Paddling isn't climbing, but there is a sense of adventure in reading the river, surprise visits from water moccasins and gators, not to mention the occasional manatee. You'all read me?

A quick word about the person, whose death touched us all, Brutus of Wyde. He was my mentor, my friend and I miss him terribly still. Climbing was a huge part of my life and all of you were actors in this play. I remember you fondly and thank you for caring about me.

Many warm regards from
Inez (Drixelius)

Inez thought that Brutus and I would make a good climbing team, so she introduced us. It turned out he was my evil twin. We were exactly the same age; born on the same day. And we were the perfect team. Brutus took the Wyde leads, I took the thin ones. Here we are on top of the Rostrum after doing the North Face. One of my best partners ever.

This is a photo I've never shared before. Brutus in his tighties "dancing" on the very summit block of Sentinel Rock. I've always sort of wavered on whether it was "too" something, or not, but whenever I look at it, I think something along the lines of "that's a free spirit celebrating life". I took this the morning after we did the Steck-Salathe. Don't even think I was out of my bag yet, I just saw him up there and got my camera out. I know I probably hadn't finished the Mountain Dew that Brutus came over and gave me as a surprise wake-up present. He knew I was a Dew junkie and he'd snuck it up there without me knowing so he could lay it on me in the last place I'd expect. Amazing guy.

Gnaaarling,

It's good to hear from you again. I'm happy to hear that you are well, and not at all surprised to learn that you are still going strong. I wish I had even a fraction of your energy. The "Enfant Terrible" still puts up with me after all these years, and has certainly kept his promise "in sickness and in health, for richer and for poorer". I think I'll keep him around for a while longer.

Halloween without Kraut Soup is not the same. I hope that we will see each other again some day.

Hilde

PS! You can't possibly be turning 70 yet. In my mind you will always be the age you were the first time I met you at Bonnie Springs. Thank you for being a part of that magical trip.
