I am putting together a group of stakeholders and interested volunteers to work on planning and producing the Eastern sierra/Lee vining Ice festival for 2015/2016. Please contact me if interested, we will be holding a meeting in Lee Vining in October, so stay tuned.

hope you're planning some kind of 'ice farming'. we could make lee vining into a climber's destination resort.

Man that's a boatload of people. Sounds cool, but I can't imagine the hordes for an ice festival. Pray there isn't a big dump just before. The avy danger would shut you down.

That's a great idea. Good for local guides, good for getting the rare handful of CA folks into ice a bit. It's too bad there is almost no steep mixed climbing in CA or we could have an amaateur comp to make a little event. My fruit boots continue to collect dust since crossing state lines!

The place is a zoo every weekend. A fest? Not really sure I can get behind this idea. :-/

I was also going to ask what SCE would have to say about this. Does anyone remember when the guy was injured on SCE property at the roadside ice in June and SCE closed it to ice climbing(although it doesn't stop people)???
It is a privilege to be able to access that ice, all we need is some circus to end that. Poor idea in my book.

Didn't mean to sound like a wet blanket in my earlier post but Lee Vining isn't Ouray. Unless you have some way to farm alot more ice and eIiminate access issues, I have a hard time seeing you being able to capably handle the mobs, assuming the conditions cooperate.

Agree it can be a zoo on the wknds. But, Ouray is a zoo every day of the week during the ice season... Great idea with potential, just foresee a few problematic hurdles. Never the less worth the effort. Count me in for any assistance.

Why ice climb on fragile glass when you can boulder or sport climb on good rock?

There will be a lot of snow this winter, however the Pineapple Express may cause some of it to melt. Does the Pineapple Express effect help inthe formation of climbable ice?
A Pineapple Express is driven by a strong, southern branch of the polar jetstream and is marked by the presence of a surface frontal boundary which is typically either slow or stationary, with waves of low pressure traveling along its axis. Each of these low pressure systems brings enhanced rainfall.
The conditions are often created by the Madden-Julian oscillation, an equatorial rainfall pattern which feeds its moisture into this pattern. They are also present during an El Niño episode.
The composition of moisture-laden air, atmospheric dynamics, and orographic enhancement resulting from the passage of this air over the mountain ranges of the western coast of North America causes some of the most torrential rains to occur in the region. Pineapple Express systems typically generate heavy snowfall in the mountains and Interior Plateau, which often melts rapidly because of the warming effect of the system.

Have to say I am quite skeptical of this idea. Certainly wouldn't plan for a weekend, that's for sure, due to crowding issues - even parking, and especially room at the ice. On a positive note, I'm not sure much energy has ever been put into seriously exploring the idea of ice farming there.

I've lived here for 17 years now. I've heard this plan sooo many times it's ridiculous. Never gonna happen. It's funny too, all the "planners" are never local. They head back to LA/Bay after a day of ice and think they have a brand new idea. Never gonna happen.

Does anyone know the current conditions of East Sierra ice? e.g., Horsetail falls and Lee Vining? Thinking about travelling up from San Diego next week but want to check conditions.

Because of the (now) 4 year drought - all the new ice has been harvested into tanks for future water use.
Don't waste your time coming up here at this/ or any other time in the near future. Thank you.
