I am better off because the Forum has given me connections to a larger community, and new, true friends.
For years I worked from home as a consultant, so I did not have the social network a lot of people have from that.
I never had kids, and all my family is on the East coast, so I never had, locally, a lot of the connections people get from that.
And I am not a member of an organized religion, so I don't have the weekly religious service connections that many have. Satsang and silent retreats are wonderful, but they are not exactly social events.
Connections to a community are important. The Forum is a GATEWAY to community that I went through and found, not just climbing partners, but real friends. Too many to name now.
I am grateful for this place.

Absolutely! I love the TRs and climbing/adventure threads. I am frequently entertained by the social and poly sci threads because I don't take them very seriously. However, I do take each person I've met via ST, either in real time, or through personal communications, very seriously. Each one has meant something dear to me.
I am deeply moved by the life changing events that many have shared. Some events are great celebrations of life, others about challenges and deep despair. I was following Paul's (Disaster Master) thread about his cancer journey when I was DX two months later. His thread, then meeting him and Ruth gave me strength and attitude adjustment of how to navigate a difficult time. Same with Big Mike's, and Ammon's and Jello, and on and on.
The events...many have been mentioned. Lotsa fun at those!
Thanks all for taking the time to share your life's adventures! Even Locker ;).

This place provides a good connection to my tribe.
Amen. It also expanded my contacts and I learned a lot hanging out here. As just a few examples, I've learned about about somewhat obscure routes in which I was interested, and about great routes that I have yet to do. I've obtained useful equipment reviews, and excellent recent information about climbs in YNP, among other places. I even learned a great deal about climate science through posts by Chiloe and Ed. In fact, in that area, I learned enough to change my mind.
Of perhaps even greater importance, I learned that lots of other climbers share my battle with depression, my faith, and the joys of life.
I'm afraid to try to name everyone I've either met or re-connected with here, because I'm sure I'll forget people whose on-line and/or in-person friendship I treasure. Thank you, CMac, for giving us this wonderful virtual campfire -- and putting up with the characters drawn to its warmth.

I think I will say that overall it's been a plus. I've met some great friends and some great climbing partners. Had a great time at Facelifts, Woodfests and Gordon Ranch gatherings. Even had a few heroes become good friends. Had support for my sobriety, even.
My life is by far better off because of ST.

I had not ever bothered in 15years to do any thing on the inter webs (not even porn)
So first there is that. Also it has helped me stop smoking some weed as I use my kids tablet
In the middle of the night
I had not gone to the depression thread or the bullying thing and spanking and Football, some of the politics ...
The things that I see here are mostly great
I have so much fun and it is at 2&3 am when nightmares make me sit up wide a wake that this forum of climbers helps me remember how great you all are. the photos oh man the things that I missed out on and the things my kids can look forward to doing,The trip reports and tips all there with Topos and all.
Damn some how I screwed up and copied and pasted using X not the C and erased the whole stupid story of my stupid fall. karma za bitch now I have to write it again
Which is one of the cures for the PTSD. So all things considered Super Topo to the rescue

For me at least a dozen new friends, climbing & ski partners, downside is people I use to look up to are not really worth that admiration but other folks have took their place on that pedestal.
Folks I've met that try to make the world a better place like Radical, Steve Grossman/Mimi, chiloe, pagenmonkeyboy, Mister E, Em Knot, mike m & his son, Todd Gordon, survival, Brokedownclimber, Captain or Skully, nature and the coolest chick in the room Beatrice Kiddo.
Others I look forward to meeting and probably the only reason I stick around here would be Dingus, tooth, Peter Haan, leggs, drcjefe, Cragman, Mouse from Merced, plus a dozen others I'm probably forgetting.
Overall I don't think I'm better off just because of one forum but I like to keep an open mind and despite the 100/1 ratio of noise to signal this place is not too bad.

Love the Taco! Don't get into politard threads much but I've greatly enjoyed climbing history, trip reports, etc. Met Mike McNeil through the Taco and climbed with him and his son this summer at Cirque of the Towers. We had a great time!

on the whole I suppose I mainly take the stoke, the ganas to climb, to train, to achieve, from this place to make my life better.
I sure would hate to see you bail on the 'Topo, E.
This place makes me excited to go out and pop off new climbs, to go out alone and toprope silly little cliffs. You're part of that, bro.
just think, without the McTopo you would not have seen my proud, proud new five-star dickwrenching mega-classic ;^)

I haven't met many of you personally, though I HAVE met Locker! Seemed like a heck of a guy to me.
I dig the "campfire" here. Lots of folks get pretty het up now and then. Not sure I can muster the same but that's all right by me. I'll save it for when I'm face to face.

I met my wife CG by chance in Josh in 2007 because she was there for a Supertaco sushifest! After that, she told me about the forum and I have since met a number of solid new friends and climbing partners, read many great TRs and enjoyed lots of fun Taco social events - very cool!! The good far outweighs the lame stuff.
