We purchased an Igloo brand cooler at Target in Los Banos on the way to the Valley Friday before last. Extra insulated and really kept the ice from melting, the beer cold... Halfway through the week the plastic hinges and latch broke. I was disgusted, so on the way home yesterday I returned it at the same Target but not having the receipt, they gave me a gift card.
Walking back to the truck I thought I should see what type of CD selection Target has. So I purchased a two disc Eagles, Zeppelin, a George Straight, and Jack White. This more than doubled my collection consisting of Toby Keith, Simon and Garfunkel, and U2.
Having 6 daughters I have managed to keep up with pop music at which my friends generally gag.

Why are the coolly-anointed like Beck/Jack White/Lou Reed somehow exponentially leagues better than, say, Sixpence None the Richer/Men Without Hats/Spice Girls ????
Some people like Big Macs, French Fries and Coca Cola, some people prefer a small steak seasoned with salt & pepper, asparagus and an IPA.

An IPA? That goes with sausages and sauerkraut. Asparagus is so overrated. You can now buy it any time of the year. Steak goes with taters and mushrooms and a big tannic red from Europe.
Just as subjective as music preference.

Everybody loves Tweedy so much, and I just gotta say: I don't get it. Some good stuff, for sure, but a whole lot of stuff I just chalk up to different strokes. Jay Farrar, on the other hand...

The vocal melodies start to all run together after a while, but that first Son Volt album was goddamn classic. Love Sebastopol and some of the other solo stuff. I still miss Uncle Tupelo most of all.

i was wondering when someone was going to bust out the tweedy vs. farrar comparisons. apples and orang-has, willoughby. tweedy went his way, exploring his pop leanings and jay just kept writing bad ass nasally country rock. of course, somebody out there probably thinks my taste suuuuuuuuuucks. son volt and wilco are equally great, imo, each in their own way.
pretty cool that tweedy has his son on the drums. tasteful chops for an 18 yr old. wonder if dad gets all surly at him if he gets ahead of the backbeat.

JOEY - Thanks, but... Really, the music I prefer to listen to is so far off from the mainstream, I hesitate calling it music. Not to mention, to sit and talk about this stuff seems to me a total waste unless we're talking the straight exchange of "tastes" of music... Then at least I can say that I participated in something that led me to find some new music.. And to what end...? Too often, I post so I can hear from the higher-minded among us to put in their two cents. No thanks. I got nothing to say about the main stream... It makes plenty of people plenty of money, so it is definitely not a bad thing and definitely not worth questioning at all...
Also, the thread header sounds cliche American to me, I.E main stream.
Ok, so that leaves me out of the pivotal moment in ST history when everyone was talking about their tastes in music.... Something makes me think that, while the thread topic may be repeated into infinity, this thread will never be spoken of again.
Cheers
it's nice to think I have allies on the boards.

So if you haven't heard some music before and someone shares it, you assume they are competing?
