Bold thieves steal hiker's keys, drive cross state to burglarize him

By Matt Markovich Published: Sep 5, 2014 at 8:00 PM PDT Last Updated: Sep 5, 2014 at 9:55 PM PDT

SEATTLE -- After spending six days backpacking in the North Cascades near Hannagan Pass, a West Seattle couple returned to the parking lot at the trail head to find their red Volvo had been burglarized, along with three other cars.

The thieves took everything of value, but they didn't stop there.

"They took my clothes, my fiance's cellphone, which was under the floor mat, they even took the floor mats," said Adam Cox.

The thieves also took the car registration -- which had Cox's West Seattle address on it -- and they found his house keys stashed in the car.

"When I saw that, my fiancé said they were probably going to the house," said Cox.

But their home was a four-hour drive away. The thieves has also cut and removed the cord connecting the battery to their car. Cox and his fiancé, Michelle Drisscol, called for help and eventually made it back home. As soon as they walked in they realized the thieves had already been there.

They took everything of value inside the house, including backpacking, hiking, and fishing gear, a computer monitor, DVD player, clothing, a diamond ring, and Cox's brand new 2014 Black Marin Lombard Cyclocross bicycle.

"Most of my favorite things were taken," said Cox.

When he looked out his back window, he realized they had also taken is 1997 Nissan Pathfinder that had a dead battery.

Cox found his dead battery where the Pathfinder was parked and assumed the thieves had time to install a new one before stealing the SUV. He says neighbors may have seen the thieves trying to jump start the Pathfinder.

But it was the discovery in his bedroom that make Cox believe the same people who burglarized his car targeted his home.

"My house keys that were there at the trail head that were in my center console, I found in my bedroom linked together thrown on the floor," said Cox. "That's the proof that it had to be the same guys."

Wow. We had a string of car break-ins at the Gunks this year, which initially seemed to be the opposite of this case. Window broken, something small taken, wallets apparently not found. On the presumption that the would-be thieves were disturbed in the act, nobody thought to cancel their credit cards. The thieves had taken card numbers, driving license details, etc. etc...

There are thieves who break into your home, car, etc. when they know that you are not there. They should be beaten to within an inch of their lives. Then there are the ones who enter your home knowing you are there. Typically these bastards are armed and want you to tell them where the valuables are, the combination to the safe, etc. If they try that on me I hope I am quick enough to blow the first one in half with double OO in the 12 gauge. The rest get the pleasure of the .357.

Of course if they turn tail and run it's illegal to shoot them. I totally get that. They shouldn't be too hard to ID on the surveillance cameras.

The other day I had a guy in a van stop me by my driveway asking me where I got the "This premise under video surveillance" signs, as if they were fake. I said they came with the cameras. He drove away.

Lotta Aholes out there.

I was just thinking about this very scenario the other day, since I have been parking my truck outside and realized I need to bring my garage door opener in with me instead of leaving it in the truck.

last big roadtrip with a lot of gear in the truck, I left a pair of worn tighty-whitey undertrousers just visible in the front compartment. not exactly an appealing target.

then I realized that carrying around a pair of my old man's whitey tighteys is not exactly appealing to me.

What do you Yanx do to keep thieves at bay?

I hesitate to blow my cover but I have a motion sensor in the vehicle hooked
up to a tape deck so that if someone breaks in they're gonna hear a high def
recording of a rattlesnake buzzing from a couple of speakers so they won't
be able to localize it. It even scares me.

the only time I have had a car broken into was in Canada, we had headed up to the French Generals for a week and came back to find the glove box broken, fortunately they didn't think the gear we left in the car was worth taking.

no wallets there in... fortunately...

that was in the early 1990s.

I've been lucky otherwise, I guess...

For my part, I'm astonished that someone hasn't done a stake-out of these monsters in one of these parking lots.

We did that at Stoney Point a long Time ago. Surprise a few of those f*ckers with a bat and the word gets around...

Mike Hoover used to leave his poisonous snake permit in the little window of his front door, and when he moved into the Eagle Rock house the first thing he did was get up on the back roof and shot two 30/06 rounds into the back lawn "I just wanted all my neighbors to know that f-;^er is crazy, now I won't have any problems"

a good friend had a perfectly dialed complete rack with cord stolen after he set it down on the back step, just to go back inside for 45 seconds, GONE....

i had a whole shop cleaned out, who loses 40K worth of gear???
Thank the North Hollywood Boyz, they were getting access to tag freeway overpasses.

weird, what i miss most, was stolen from the car, a Marmot Warm II parka.. i went to pay for gas and when i got back, Gone.. don't leave it unlocked at all.

I have been lucky, but I drive beaters usually. I keep my registration and proof of insurance on my phone, I think I will hide the paper copy in my trunk. come to think of it, I only have a PO box listed on my registration.

I am amazed by the number of people who keep credit cards in their vehicle console.

We had gear thieves at the Leap a few years back. Not so much lately. Everyone knows who it was. A local junkie from Kyburz. He wasnt a climber but he sold alot of gear. The as#@&%e would hang out in the bar at the lodge. He would camp in his vehicle and hit peoples cars while they were on routes. He went to jail for other stuff I think. I had my cargo container robbed by tennants' Norteno friends. We know who. All my Grandmothers cedar furniture, my Dads paintings, gutars, huge (5-7lb) crystals, glassware from my old lab, my Doctoral thesis notes and data, everything. I could go to war with the gang and get my sh#t back. Cops are no help. If they thought I was coming for paybacks, the cops would be guarding them. See my post about pit bulls. I got three left.

I onetime saw a friends distinctive Saab at a trailhead in L-worth Washington and proceeded to fill it up with boulders. Good sized ones. I was strong (not too smart). Filled it up to the bottom of the windows.

Saw the person a month later in Seattle and asked him how he was and if he'd had anything happen lately. Turns out he hadn't been to Leavenworth in months......

That totally blows Dwain. Meh..

First month we were in our new place some random small stuff got stolen out of the yard. We erected a full perimeter fence so the shady neighbors can't scope out the yard , and all the ladders that are stored outside are locked together with a massive cable.

Trailhead breakins- Both at Malibu Creek and Stoney Pt... I never keep anything in the car and just leave the doors unlocked . Twice I've come back to my unmolested vehicle when the cars parked on either side had smashed windows.

Someday, just maybe, climbers et al will collectively get it together and take a geezer (like me) with them to sit at the TH to watch over peoples cars & stuff (not just their own) in exchange for beer, food, $,.... What the hell else am I doing? Blah Blah. Consider the user fees for almost everything these days. Sure it's another fee, but whats free these days? Or keep dealing with stolen goods and smashed cars?

I smell an app needing creation here. TH sitters R US?

Another option is being dropped off. And that has a price too.

I once noticed my BD daypack was missing out of my van. It might have happened at the rest stop I was at. Went to go brush my teeth after dinner and...WTH is my pack(with toothbrush/paste inside)? Or, it might have happened when I stopped at a Starbucks earlier that day. When I wne to go back to the car, I was going to give Teddy a walk and....the door wasn't locked. Usually I am really careful, but I missed it that time.

Either way, I was very lucky that I had my wallet with me at the SBucks, and then it was sitting int he console elastic pocket on the doghouse when at the rest stop. They got my hairbrush and an in need of replacing toothbrush and squeezed to almost empty toothpaste, and that was about it. Well, the backpack was of value to me. I had to admit it pleased me to imagine them thinking they were sure to score and being pissed off to find nothing.

The TrackR device will allow you track something like a ladder, but it is hit or miss as to its effectiveness. It depends on connecting to a phone running the TrackR app in order to send location data to you. Could be any phone running TrackR that sends the data.

Cheap, but is most useful for keeping track of your keys, theoretically once a lot of people start using TrackR it will work better.

Dwain- rather than a tracking device- it might be worth an additional investment to back up your cable with one of the cut-proof types. That... or a pit bull .

...someone stole the stick shift transmission out of our car.

OK... that's ^^^ really weird. Junkies get all kinds of "ideas" when left to their own devices.

A buddy of mine has an idea for an anti theft device. Invent a fake stick-shift and phony clutch pedal.
Most of the current generation of hoodlums don't know how to drive a manual transmission.

Another "weird" one.. I bought a carton of milk 2 days ago... I ran into the post office for one minute to drop a box on the counter. When I got back to my car the milk was gone.
Who the fVck steals milk? I guess it WAS "organic"- roughly the same cost per ounce as bullion.

Long ago an idiot broke into my brand new car and mangled the stereo and carved up the entire interior - the total damage was about half of the cost of the new car.
Then I put a fake AM simple radio looking cover over the front of the stereo, which worked quite well. Another guy installed a flashing red LED to look like a burglar alarm, (before these were common).

Tami said she was surprised no one had staked out the parking lots to watch for the thieves. A few years back some folks did that at Exit 38, sport climbing area just outside Seattle. Thieves had been breaking in using a slim jim, scanning credit cards from wallets, and putting everything back. You get more time to use credit card numbers if people don't know they've been stolen. So people staked it out and tried to confront the thieves, turned out to be a crew with lookouts and Russian accents. Likely Russian Mob, folks were lucky to not get shot. Cops were no help at all.

Be careful about cornering thieves.

you guys are paranoiacs-- worried about the absolute worst case scenario of a car break-in.... if you had the same mentality about rock-climbing, you'd be tying into three ropes for every climb!

On average, there is 70 reported car break-ins a day in san francisco... I would imagine that 99+% of the break-ins involve nothing more than theft of contents within the car.

Its easy enough to make breaking into a car an unsurvivable enterprise. Just put a sign on it that says "You may want to stand way over there if you set off the motion alarm" to keep the innocents away.

Seems to be a correlation of rampant theft with liberal controlled areas--guess the idea is that the "little people" are just righting some social injustices and the bourgeoisie hikers/climbers are getting what they deserve by having their ill-gotten possessions reallocated to more deserving folks.
(Now there is marked auto theft from some right-wing tweaker infested parts of the US too, I admit, but as a generalization, more libs -> more property crime. Think Canada, Europe, California, etc.)

The insane (at least from US perspective) theft from autos in BC has been well known since I got into climbing early 90s (and probably long before then). As I recall, when visiting BC, standard operating procedure is to remove everything of conceivable value from your car, leave it with windows rolled down, and hope the local criminals aren't sufficiently malevolent to vandalize.

what do you do when you are on an extended road trip and living out of your vehicle? I skipped some places on my last road trip because I had heard that there had been break-ins. That sucked.

I'm not sure which is worse, thieves or the vandals. A friend had all four tires and his spare slashed while he was on an extended backpacking trip. 20+ miles of dirt roads from anywhere.

Be careful where you park your house too. In our houses at Finnskogen thieves have broken in two times the last year. There is nothing of great value in the houses, but the thieves don't know before they have tried, do they... The first time they broke in they damaged one door. The second time they chopped their way through one door with an axe and damage three windows. The last time they also signed our "cabin book" with the signature you see below.
