Right now Americans are extremely stupid.

I second Goatboy Smells' list of American comedians. I would add only one, ok two: Lenny Bruce and Margaret Cho. Sexual humor has always been popular in America.

 I tend to think they are simple minded idiots (like me)... whenever a problem arises Americans will choose the simplest answer/action...
It will take a ton to get America to swap your observable notions noted above "Right now Americans laugh at sh!t they shouldn't.

Avery,
I enjoyed Flight of the Conchords but it got boring. We like edgy . When it's good here, comedy offers irreverent jabs at convention and pomp. It's even funnier if the object of the humor get's a little bit butt-hurt. That's why "F*#k Avery" actually gets laughs. What you Brits in Canadia and Kiwiland need to remember is that politeness is often fake-ass bullsh#t. Hence "F*#k Avery" is really a tilt of the hat to our struggling kiwi-Brit pomp taco.

I remember the Cosby Show being right out there on the edge. So I understand what you me.
Since the inception of HBO American TV has been running around like a kid in a candy store. Heavy doses of sex, violence and bad language.
British TV was doing this 30 years ago along with style and imagination.
US TV is totally devoid of imagination. In the US, if you want to be critically lauded then simply turn up the excess quotient.
