The first Tahoe 200 mile ultra run is slated to kick off from Homewood on Friday September 5th. The route circumnavigates Lake Tahoe and ends back at Homewood concluding Tuesday September 9th.
This is a major ultra event and is drawing athletes from all over the globe.
For anyone that would like to be a part of history, volunteers are still desperately needed to make this happen. Aid station staff, pacers, drivers, medical support, timing staff, you name it we can use it.
If you are interested in helping out please contact the Race Director Candice Burt, at Candice@tahoe 200.com or the Volunteer Coordinator Richard Kresser, at Volunteer@Tahoe200.com
For more info on this amazing event go to Tahoe200.com

No comments from the ST gallery?
ST will commend this outstanding event and applaud those who endeavor to complete this course.
The truth is,
The harmful effects to the athletes who participate in this activity is disturbing. How modern society can foster such self-scourging sadists is incomprehensible. I will participate in any intervention attempts that can be organized. PM me to buy a "You can be Saved from Yourself" t-shirts, $15 each to help raise awareness

Common guys! Real Science usually involves testing to destruction.
Medical types are drooling in anticipation of some 1st class data
siphoned out of collapsed ultra-marathoners.
Most climbers who have pulled over the top of some test piece and collapsed
in exhaustion never had the benefit of a medical team pouncing on them to
with needles and butt thermometers to measure 'real EAC data.!
EAC = exercise-associated collapse
1)evaluate the characteristics of runners with exercise-associated
collapse!
2)study the time of onset of collapse, temperature, cardiovascular status,
and incidence of readily identifiable medical conditions of those
in the process of collapsing during the run.
3)majority (85%) of runners with EAC collapsed after they had completed
the race; Yes most cases of EAC (85%) occur after the finish line!;
runners collapsing during the race are more likely to have a readily
identifiable medical condition than runners collapsing after the finish
line; (iii) runners collapse most frequently near cutoff times for medals
and race closure times; and (iv) 16% of EAC casualties and 19% of control
runners have identifiable biochemical abnormalities.
Maybe these studies will lead to better sports drinks and nutrition bars.

$850 seems like a lot to a climber, unless you are going to do an 8000m peak or something.
But marathons often have substantial entrance fees, and this is the only 200 mile event in the US (and the first time it is being run).
With all the support people and work required to get permits to run the race, you could think of the fee as more like climbing with a guide.
Compare to the Badwater Ultra (135 mile, Death Valley to Whitney Portal), where the entry fee is $995.
http://www.badwater.com/reg.html
The current entry fee to the Western States 100 is $370.

I've done some centuries on the bike, and it's always hard to get over the fees. I try think of it as riding with a caterer. I gain weight on those things.

Wish I was in shape, and had sponsors; that's 4 times the farthest I've run. But I'd do it, be slow, and be happy about the whole thing.
Good luck on this!

I completed a 50 mile road run to celebrate my 21st birthday. I'm 55 now and still have not forgotten how wiped I was at the end of that thing.
I'm gonna skip this one (yeah...like I could run anywhere near that far now).

A little over a week to go until this kicks off.
Still looking for volunteers.
With so few runners spread out over such a long distance the logistics to pull this off are tough. Anyone interested in helping out would be welcome.
You don't have to commit to days on end, even a few hours would be great.
Anyone interested in pacing, should know you don't have to be fast, most runners will be moving between 2-5mph and toward the end they may be slowing down to a crawl. Just need to keep punch drunk runners headed in the right direction.
As to why? As climbers haven't we seen the bar continually being raised? Nose in a day, to nose in a few hours. One El Cap route in a day to multiple? Nose and Half Dome to Nose, Half Dome and Watkins? We are all testing our limits.
Support and positive energy goes a long way.
Hope to see some of you out there.

Interesting. I'll study the site this afternoon.
Maybe I could assist in some way up around the Spooner Summit TRT area
at that time.
Wish I didn't have the jitters about participating in something so
long and grueling because it sure sounds like fun!!

Don't get too excited about "breakdown" or "collapse" of runners in this race. Ultra distance runs were being held long before the start of the internet and today there is a very full calendar of races all year round in the U.S. and in other countries. Volunteering lets you see each runner up close and personal and can be an inspiring weekend, plus you will make new friends.

Apparently the unsupported FKT on the JMT went down recently too. I think the time wasn't too much longer than Pantilat's, which makes it something of a more impressive record imo.
I can't believe how much these ultras cost. $850??

There was a time when I thought ultras were cool. Not anymore , not after finding out that both Paula Newby Fraiser and Dave Allen have developed nearly identical major immune disorders..If one does a little independent research on the effects of these types of events on the human body I doubht you will remain interested in pursuing them. I know a gal who won the western states 100. She had her hips replaced before she reached 50.. All the latest research regarding marathoning, ultras, tri-athalons is coming back very negative..not only for joints but especially for the heart..no to mention the kidneys and the liver as well...burn up a knee joint just say I have done an Ultra? Give your self heart damage doing an ultra? Not me baby. Check out Dr Mercolas website..integrus research on any subject regarding human physiology and more...

Congrats on an epic loop.
As you said,
http://www.ultralive.net/tahoe200/webcast.php
now shows 60 finishers and 30 drops (under 100 hours).
It also shows 200 registered, 7 did not start.
So that leaves 103 "MIA".
Presumably some of these hit the 100 hour cutoff and maybe finished
unofficially. Or maybe dropped without confirmation.
