I was totally uninformed until this guy made this post that generalized the beliefs of a few thousand religious extremists as those of 1.6 billion people and now I know how terrible they are! I am way more informed now. Thanks, HFCS! I can't believe I took the word and actions of the hundreds of millions of Muslims over those of a tiny minority. Your approach seems much more reasonable.

ISIS needs a guy or a whole crew of guys just like Werner and Merry.

Those pickups with the guns in the bed would all look better with decent decals.

The good news is, they're drawing guise like the Boston bombers, out into the open. They live on welfare and repay us so.

Well HDDJ, tfpu. it's nice to see that, like JB, you're so informed. To read a post like yours sure gives me comfort and makes me feel proud to be an American.

I'm sure like most other Americans, you've read the Koran, you've traveled these countries, you've studied seriously comparative religions and theologies and, as part of that experience, discovered for yourself that, hey, traditional fundamentalism of Islam is much more like gentle, humble Jainism and nothing at all like the worst 16th century fundamentalist Christianity.

Yeah, last night I don't know what I was thinking. Shame on me, since Islam really is the "religion of peace" and, if I might add, even the religion of enlightenment regarding science and women's rights and general human rights and most other things - just as anyone can readily see from its people and the language they use to express themselves. Again, what was I thinking?! How "alarmist" that was! Clearly, in reality, they're on the leading edge of culture and everything. Just see, the majorities are evolutionists, they value science education, they have moved past superstitions of old. So... forgive me, no worries, my friend - and hakuna matata to you and everyone. Let's all go climbing now.

Again, I'm very comforted knowing you're one of those who actually gets it. Thanks.

ORIGINAL FIRST POST...

Incredible. The VICE News folks get inside Syria to hang out with the Islamic group ISIS.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsCZzpmbEcs

Many on this site think the crises playing out today in Iraq /Syria and Palestine are NOT about religion. Insofar as this is you, please read the Koran (it's a simple read, two days), get informed, and realize the majorities of Muslims in these countries / cultures are in fact traditional fundamentalists. Then, finally, please, reconsider your mindset. Young people esp, both presently and in the future, cannot afford to be uninformed on these growing developments.

Fundamentalist Islam is not "a religion of peace."

I'd suggest heading back to the "Mind" thread where you can put words together in no particular order and sound like you're saying something deep.

Politics, it is clear, is not in your wheelhouse.

Meanwhile, President Obama has reacted to ISIS in a responsible and measured manner. The world changes around us, we don't have control. Certainly not to the level most think we do.

Now everyone go back to chopping wood and climbing and let the experts handle this.

It's a shame that someone like HFCS ends up placing himself on the side of the fundamentalists, by propping them up and making them more powerful than they actually are, and trying to tear down those of peace who practice Islam, which are by far the majority.

https://www.ted.com/talks/imam_feisal_abdul_rauf

What he confuses is the issue of religion and the issue of culture. All people have both, and it is easy, apparently, to blend the two as one, when they are quite distinct.

What's obvious here is several posters, including yourself (Ken M) apparently, are failing to distinguish between (a) traditional fundamentalists of Islam (numbering in the tens if not hundreds of millions) and (b) jihidi Islamists of Islam (growing tens of thousands, say, and certainly NOT just a few thousand).

Nowhere did I say traditional fundamentalists (of Islam) were jihadi Islamists aka militant Islamists (of Islam). So get your facts straight, your concepts straight, your language straight.

Why don't you think about it, or read up on it, before posting. Further, are you or anyone else here actually suggesting we in America should not try to be more informed by above linked videos (taken at great risk by westerners, btw), for instance? or by (caring enough and) reading the Koran (the very conceptual foundation of most billion-plus Muslims)?

The relationship between the fundamentalists and the militants (for example, how the former are easily manipulated by the latter) is the one that we seem to be "turning the blind eye" to - to put it charitably.

What he confuses is the issue of religion and the issue of culture.

This is laughable. I've been following these areas and their intersection my entire life. Have you? I've visited the middle east several times. In college, I had an Iranian girlfriend (yes not Arab) for more than a year often visiting her fundamentalist family regularly; thus had the opportunity to become quite familiar with their fundamentalist beliefs; in undergrad school, many Iranians (in particular young men) were in my major and dorm and we often consumed many hours late in the night philosophizing about the Abrahamic religions and their underlying theologies and what we all really really believed. Can you say anything similar? Where do you get your views, Salon or Slate?

The tragedy here, Ken M, is that you seem to be "presenting" with a theological illiteracy concerning Abrahamic Islam - both regarding fundamentalists and jihadis - quite akin to the illiteracy that America at large presents regarding science. A topic I'm pretty sure you can relate to. That's your part in the "shame."

by propping them up and making them more powerful than they actually are, and trying to tear down those of peace who practice Islam, which are by far the majority.

Do we come from the same planet? Do we watch the same news broadcasts?!

What's your strategy? Ignore them? (Turn a blind eye to them?) - the jihadi militants, that is. "Trying to tear down those (fundamentalists) of peace..." (You mean like Malala, say)? Yeah, no hyperbole there, lol!

Perhaps types like you ought to be grateful there are types like me in the world, or you'd already be living under some kind of caliphate, Islamic or otherwise. Food for thought.

But do any of them actually climb?

Sh#t man, I climbed at Rocklands last week, didn't realize how out of shape I am. Firstly, funky (but solid) some sort of quartzite, barely got up a sort of 5.6 (VS or so) route, unroped, my nephew asked me if I wanted a hand.

Yeah the hand of God, or Jesus. Or Mohammed (sp?), or Bush, Clinton, Obama, Putin, ISIS, whatever, just give me a hand paying the bills. I am yours, a free spirit willing to sell his soul for a few shillings.

Just get the creditors off of my back. Allah be praised.
