"You can't even explain to people what it was like."
I remember the Gunks of '68. I remember the smells, the sounds, the fear and the sweet bliss of surviving a day of 5.5 climbs. I remember the people in my group and the legends like Goldstone.
I think I could explain to people what it was like but whether they understood would be another question.
In just a few phrases that article brings those days back to me.

I always enjoy a great article about great people.
Never met him that I know of (I'd be honored to), but everything I've ever read about Rich screams one hell of a nice, intelligent man with a deep rooted passion for climbing.

Great article, TFPU.
It's also cool how there are a few other posters mentioned in the article. It must have been a really special time at the Gunks back then.
Much respect.

Great article!
I still remember Rich catching me on a leader fall, close to fifty years ago. I dragged poor Rich threw the bushes, as he was a little too far from the cliff. He had me and a few others laughing as he retold the story, at a Gunks reunion, a few years ago.

I just thought society had collapsed; that this was it; this was the end of days; that everything that climbing stood for was going to go down the tubes into this black hole

This story speaks to what makes Goldstone unusual, so I'll tell it again.
Rich, Evy, myself, and my wife at the time were in Rich's wagon on the way to New Hampshire going
along the West Side Highway. Until it fell down that highway made special demands on the driver. If
you did not want to fall to the street level through the holes in the pavement you had to execute a
slalom course at top speed and in NYC traffic. Rich was completely at ease, both hands on the
wheel, head erect and still making his usual fascinating observations. He continued this
performance as though nothing was happening even as Evy took off her sweater and three beat up
cadillacs full of Bob Dylan types began reaching out of their cars to grab our door sills; screaming
the whole time.
No matter what Goldstone does he is always at ease and perfectly happy to be where he is. I may be
wrong on this, but I think that is probably the goal toward which everyone aspires.

That whole blog rocks, great interviews with some influential folks still humble, respectful and insightful. Such a nice change a pace from the selfies here and other blogs.
