Like Gregory Peck, one of the few real men--and never afraid to show it.

Too young to remember the Maverick, but I grew up on Jim Rockford.

Rest in peace, James. America lost another icon...

The theme song is forever emblazoned into my memory banks.

Garner was one of my favorites. He didn't play the Hollywood games, just learned his lines and showed up on time.
His fictional characters always managed to reflect the real man. You always had the sense you were getting something genuine from James Garner.
RIP
Condolences to all his fans.

James Garner was not only a very good actor but genuinely nice person.

In 1964 or 65 he made a move called 36 hours. A lot of it was shot in Yosemite, some of it in the Wawona area.

He was fun to watch between takes as he was kidding around with the crew and very friendly with the employees that wanted to talk to him.

He will be missed, but he left us with many great memories in his long career..

Thank you Maverick!

Later, he joined the National Guard serving seven months in the United States. He then went to Korea for 14 months in the Regular Army, serving in the 5th Regimental Combat Team in the Korean War. He was wounded twice, first in the face and hand from shrapnel fire from a mortar round, and second on April 23, 1951 in the buttocks from friendly fire from U.S. fighter jets as he dove headfirst into a foxhole. Garner was awarded the Purple Heart in Korea for the first injury. For the second wound, he received a second Purple Heart (eligibility requirement: “As the result of friendly fire while actively engaging the enemy”), although Garner received the medal in 1983, 32 years after his injury. Garner was a self-described “scrounger” for his company in Korea, a role he later played in The Great Escape and The Americanization of Emily.

He was the best of TV private eyes because it was fun.

Noah Beery was a good co-star in Rockford Files, as well.

And the car chases and the J-Turn or Rockford Maneuver were cool.

Rockford's car chases clips.

Yeah , on the Rockford Files you can see the noticeable limp and stagger whenever Garner had to run or walk real fast.
He was probably in pain but he's the kinda dude that rarely complained.

It just occurred to me that my old boss at the barrel factory was a real sick gambler (never bet with your heart, Brian).

He named his two boys Bart and Bret.

My old old boss at Curry liked his booze.

Two girls: Sherry and Brandy.

“It was a couple years after I was in Korea that I started [acting]. And I really got serious when I was 27 because ... I had a wife and an 8-year-old daughter who had just gotten out of the hospital with polio. And so I took on that responsibility.”

“I said, 'Well, I'll give myself five years to see if I can make a living at it.' And after five years I was 30 and I said, 'Yeah, I can go another five years on just the reputation I have now' and then I went another five, and another five, and another five, and finally -- at 50 years old -- I said 'You know, I think I have a career,' ”
--Both James Garner quotes

My wife loved the western movies, but hated the indifferent movie with Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster. She felt that she would have made a much better co-star than 'that little tramp ho.' I wisely threw in my hand on that discussion and she was happy.

RIP.

I always thought that of the all TV Westerns Maverick was the best (when James Garner featured). The Rockford Files was one of the best PI TV series.

But his films: some of my favorites. Just to name a few (the ones I have on DVD)

Shootout at Medicine Bend, Sayonara, Darby's Rangers, Up Periscope, of course The Great Escape as well as the two fun Support Yor Local…, The Americanization of Emily, 36 Hours, Grand Prix, A Man Could Get Killed (one of my favorites), Hour of the Gun, an off-beat Marlowe, A Man Called Sledge, Skin Game, Victor Victoria, Sunset, My Name is Bill W., Decoration Day, Murphy's Romance, Barbarians at the Gate, IMO he was the best thing in the Maverick movie, (not that Gibson and Foster were that bad, and James Coburn was good as well), My Fellow Americans (another top favorite, I watch it about once a month, Jack Lemmon and Garner had great chemistry), Twilight, Space Cowboys (another top favorite, but then I am a Clint Eastwood fan as well, and I like Tommy Lee Jones and Donald Sutherland), and a very special film, The Notebook. I have only watched it once (and that's all, not again), it is both sad and uplifting, a lot of Gena Rowlands dementia reminds me of my partner Jennie's dementia.

I know there are other fine moveis by Garner, but the above list are the ones I have.

As a failed actor (me), it was my dream to not only meet him someday, but to act at least once with him. Neither happened.

RIP Mr Garner.
