Border crisis: Why the surge in illegal border-crossers with children?
US Border Patrol is struggling to cope with throngs of mothers and even unaccompanied children, apparently drawn by rumors that the Obama administration will let undocumented families stay. Critics say Obama's policies are in fact largely to blame.

A recent wave of migrant mothers with children, as well as unaccompanied children, crossing the US southern border is, to President Obama, an “urgent humanitarian crisis." To critics, the surge of humanity on America's doorstep stems at least in part from Mr. Obama's own policies that appear to lay out the welcome mat for illegal immigrants.

With the surge in needy immigrant families, makeshift camps are springing up at Arizona bus depots, and the US is opening military barracks in Texas to house the growing number of unaccompanied children.

According to press reports, rumors are flying throughout Central America that parents won’t be detained by the US Border Patrol if a child is by their side. That's true, for the most part. They are sent to live with relatives, or anywhere else, until their deportation hearings (usually within 15 days).

The Border Patrol, in an internal memo, acknowledges it is having to take its eyes off securing the border and busting human- and drug-trafficking rings in the Rio Grande Valley sector in south Texas to focus instead on a wave of migrants, mostly from strife-torn Central American countries like Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.

After Arizona officials complained about the Border Patrol shipping migrants in from Texas and dropping them at bus stations, the Department of Homeland Security on Friday halted that policy. The US has instead begun housing unaccompanied migrant children on military installations in Texas and California, under the supervision of Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Craig Fugate.

The new wave of illegal immigrants may also affect the politicking in Washington over immigration reform, given that the emerging crisis appears to be drawing into question the government’s ability to contain the border. An adequately sealed border is a key sticking point in negotiations between Democrats and Republicans over a proposed immigration reform measure that includes a path to citizenship for certain illegal immigrants already in the US.

“For those who are friendly to migration, this gets highlighted for the same reason they highlighted DREAM-ers: There’s a very clear moral proposition” around protecting innocent children, says Allert Brown-Gort, an immigration policy expert at the University of Notre Dame, citing a proposed law to give legal status to undocumented young people brought to the US as minors.

“The other side wants to highlight … the idea of migrants on the other side with catapults, just flinging their children across [the border],” because the US has been signaling that it’s become friendlier, under Mr. Obama, to undocumented migrants, Mr. Brown-Gort adds.

Critics say Obama’s 2012 executive order that lets young people brought to the US illegally as children apply for a two-year deferral from deportation, as well as the Bush administration's 2008 decision to close a major detention facility in Texas, have helped to create conditions for a new wave of illegal immigration.

Some migrants are telling reporters on the border that they’ve heard in their home countries that there’s a “new opportunity” to emigrate to the US illegally and stay indefinitely, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Cindy Carcamo on Friday.

“The word has gotten back that [the Obama administration] is letting people stay – not just unaccompanied minors, but women with children – which is creating an opportunity to sneak in and get while the getting’s good,” says Mark Krikorian, director of the Center for Immigration Studies in Washington, which backs "low migration."

“What it means is they haven’t locked down the border, and all this talk about how tough the administration is on enforcement is being exposed as false," he adds.

The border patrol just tripled its projection of how many “unaccompanied alien children” are expected to cross the border. New estimates project 90,000 so-called unaccompanied children will try to cross this year and as many as 165,000 will try in 2015 (up from about 13,000 in 2012 and 24,000 in 2013).

Overall, illegal immigration from Central America is now inching toward 180,000 people a year – about half of the flow at the 2005 peak, but up from 130,000 two years ago.

Children are about 10 percent of that flow, and as many as 70 percent of those children are unaccompanied, Brown-Gort says. Many of the children are 12 and older, and most are boys. At home, boys that age are chief targets of cartels, and rising violence is pushing them to head north.

“It sounds easy to say, ‘Well, they’re being told that all they have to do is show up and everything will be OK,’ but people are balancing that with the really horribly increased dangers of migration,” including shakedowns and sexual violence, he says. “This kind of migration is a big roll of the dice, and not easy.”

Border Patrol Deputy Chief Ronald Vitiello raised alarms about the current policy in an unsigned May 30 memo obtained by the Washington Times and reported by the Associated Press. Releasing mothers with kids and reuniting unaccompanied children with relatives in the US are serving as “incentives to additional individuals to follow the same path,” Mr. Vitiello wrote.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) complained in a recent letter to Obama that the policy has resulted in women and children with few connections in the US lingering in makeshift camps while awaiting deportation hearings, including one at the Phoenix Greyhound station. Meanwhile, churches and nonprofit groups have kicked into overdrive to try to keep susceptible families and children fed and safe in the 110-degree desert heat.

Looks like the war on the border was canceled. Rifleman Ron, why don't you cut off your electronic ankle bracelet and head on down there? Afraid of a drone strike like the rest of the sissy Oaf Keepers?

Dori Monson: Washington taxpayers are going to be hit hard by immigration crisis
June 23, 2014 @ 2:13 pm (Updated: 2:35 pm - 6/24/14 )
Listen: Washington taxpayers are going to be hit hard by immigration crisis
KIRO Radio: Listen to the 'LOCAL' channel

Taken from Monday's edition of The Dori Monson Show.
You've heard about the immigration crisis down on our Mexican border. You've heard about thousands of illegals, many of them children, coming into this country. But what I want you to know about is how much this could cost you as a taxpayer here in Washington state.

Nobody has picked up on the fact that many of those illegals are about to be shipped here to Washington. John McCain on Sunday, in an interview with a Tucson television station, broke that news.

"This is a humanitarian crisis," said McCain. "These young children, as they're brought up, are subject to all kinds of terrible abuses. Once they reach the border, then as they seek asylum and admission to this country, they are taken to these facilities. They are well treated here. They are fed. They are clothed. They are given showers and other hygienic capabilities. But the fact is, that there's now thousands and we are running out of places to put them."

McCain continued: "Right now, the latest is to even move them to a military base in the state of Washington because of the unacceptable overcrowding, and there is no sign of it in reduction."

So they are moving them to a military base here in Washington, with the ultimate goal from the Obama administration, of them being mainstreamed into our society and granted asylum.

This is all by design because there is the hope that a lot of these people, who will be granted asylum, will eventually become voters. The stats are clear that immigrants who come to this country and eventually get made citizens, they overwhelmingly vote Democratic. So the reason the administration loves this as a strategy is because they see this as expanding their base.

So they're on their way to our neck of the woods. I don't know where. We are checking out whether that means Joint Base Lewis-McChord or somewhere else. But the illegals are coming our way. This is significant to you as a taxpayer for a variety of reasons.

First of all, they all must be educated, which means public school dollars in the K-12 system will have to be expanded for all the illegals coming our way.

Secondly, a story this weekend in The Seattle Times headlined: "Undocumented students seek college aid," said:

"More than 1,600 undocumented college students have filed for financial aid under a state program newly opened to them under the Legislature's Real Hope Act."

So 1,600 illegals would get a free college education. If we're talking about the University of Washington for example, four years college tuition there is about $48,000. Multiply 1,600 by $48,000 and we're talking about a cost to the taxpayers in our state of $76,800,000.

It's also a slap in the face if you are a citizen of this country, of this state, and you struggle to put your kids through college. Maybe your kids were turned down when they applied for a grant. Maybe your kid with a 3.3 GPA was on the bubble and didn't get into the UW because the slots are given to illegals who have come into our country.

The Ron & Don Show
"America is big enough to accommodate every single one of these kids and show them a better life."

Read: Ron & Don's take
Meanwhile, down in Olympia on Friday, we were told about a coming billion-dollar budget deficit here in Washington. Here is the director of the office of financial management here in our state, David Schumacher:

"This is not a drill to impose across-the-board cuts. This is a drill to give the governor the options to figure out where the pain will be least. There's no way that we could get significant cuts like this without their being actual pain, actual service cuts."

So understand they are predicting a $1 billion shortfall, a budget hole in the next two years here in Washington. But we are about to spend $76 million giving free college education to illegals coming to this region.

And it's not just the ones being flown here that John McCain was talking about. I'm also talking about a very sophisticated pipeline within the illegal transporting community. They know which states are either the most friendly to illegals, or turn a blind eye, and Washington is at the top of the list.

This is a real problem. They are talking about massive tax increases because of this billion-dollar shortfall. We're giving free college to illegals. We're flying plane loads of illegals, according to John McCain, from this latest border crisis into our state. Not one person is connecting the dots between all of this except on our show here.

The next strategy coming down the road from the governor and the Legislature is to push for a state income tax. They want a state income tax because they say we don't have enough money, we're going to have to make painful cuts.

How about, you stop making Washington state, King County, Seattle a magnet for illegals coming into this country. How about we stop providing free college education for the 1,600 illegals who have applied, before you make sure the citizens of our state are taken care of.

This is a crisis. We are in a crisis and our region could be hit hard. Other than the border states, the place that's going to be hit the very hardest by this crisis are taxpayers here in Washington.

Given this extreme state of affairs I am certain congress will enact reasonable immigration legislation in the near future.

I thought we already HAVE a viable and "smart" immigration program. Backed by laws. You know,, kinda like obumbly was talking about the other day- to "entice the worlds best and brightest to come here"....Something deeply disturbing has happened to that eh?

Ron, let's solve the problem by deporting a militia member for every illegal immigrant we get. Net result....higher percentage of the population who want to work and a gain in the overall IQ.

Maybe the Mexican Helicopters can do our work for us, by shooting all the illegal gun toting Militia American Haters on our side of the border.

I bet it will make it safer for the Real Border Patrol without them around causing trouble.

JD, a great percentage of militia members are ex US Forces of one branch or another. So your saying we should trade those guys/gals for third world downtrodden for a net gain eh?

My little brigade has many masters level educated people, including Drs, Archaeologists , Veterans that are now highly skilled professionals, Law enforcement officers, etc etc. Maybe you should actually know some before making such a call. Maybe you think that being a Veteran doesnt give one a right to think for himself and just to tow a line no matter what.

Perhaps you think America should have no borders and be open to a billion people today. But that isnt how we came to be nor will it be how we survive on as the best democracy going. It wont be how we stay the country that others call upon for help aid or globalization for that matter- with out there ever being a USA, there would be NO globilization.

And think on this,, i cant for the life of me remember a more heavy handed govt action since Kent State here n America than the 200 plus agents that swarmed a Nev rancher over a couple of hundred cows. And the reaction in 4 other states since then has been largely propelled by that incident. Even the good folks of Murietta CA may have been somewhat inspired by that.

Think on this as well, that the fact there hasnt been ONE arrest over any of these protests. There are lawyers chomping at the bit to defend them should that happen. Laws have been broken alright, but not by militia members and that is the very reason the govt doesnt attempt to force the issue. They KNOW their "tit" would hit the ringer..

Lastly ,, im a militia member, so do you condone the swap of me to Guatemala for some refugee that has maybe a year of school and no viable skills other than general laborer, that felt compelled to start his stint in this country illegally and hasnt a clue as to how a democracy works?

YOU MUST at LEAST reference the author

Otherwise, we may think you wrote it, and we all know you can't write like that, so it gives us the feeling that you're spewing MORE Lies, since you present no honesty by not saying it's a cut and paste

It's best to have author, date AND Link
