Supertopo is great site, but it's in grave danger of becoming irrelevant. Sure, plenty of folks are posting, but climbing is becoming a very distant second to mindless babble.
Worst still are the sometimes savagely abusive messages being posted, which I know for a fact are turning some folks away from the site.
Fair enough, we all like to engage in a bit of tit for tat banter. I've both received and given the odd acid remark. But there is a big difference between light weight banter and obscene abuse.
I myself am preparing for some flak after proclaiming I would not initiate another thread.
I unconditionally surrender. At this very moment I'm standing beside my computer holding both my arms high in the air.
This issue, however, is too important to pass without comment.

We are more than just climbers...

"Haven't been around a campfire with crappy wine arguing the state of the world recently have ya?"
Interesting comments Todd and I will certainly take them on board.
Perhaps some crappy wine really is all it takes to lead a full and happy life
But I know of specific cases where people on this site have been obscenely abused and have taken it very much to heart.
I'm sorry if this upsets you.

ST has been on the fast track to hell for some time now. Ever since I've been posting here (7 years or so).
When is it ever going to hit bottom? Could it possibly suck even more than it already does? LOL!
It is simply a matter of what you choose to pay attention to.
I do a lot more face palms these days, and a lot less reactionary posts.
It is just entertainment . . .

I agree with your sentiment, Avery. At the same time, I think the best way to deal with abusive posters is to starve them of oxygen. They crop up in virtually every thread on every subject, and only gain impact when they're responded to. I think it's best to let their comments twist in the wind, and sound puerile in their isolation.

Avery, I shall explain once again: This forum is not necessarily about climbing, it's about climbers and what they think about everything under the sun.
While some of the great bits of American climbing history are deep in this stream of drivel making it the most authoritative site in the world, it is the drivel coming from the fingers of some great American climbers.
You can post up great sensible factual info. There it is. Nothing to discuss. It bobs up with a few complements and sinks like a stone.
You can blurt out a thread that you think US President Obama is Muslim Antichrist and you know this for a fact because aliens are broadcasting this into your brain and your post will float for weeks, reappearing for long periods months later. People have something to say about this, and usually it's not kind. AND it will come from many real good American climbers (though many are has-beens).
Supertopo is doomed to persist.
Class is a matter of viewpoint.

What's all this about? We have lots of class. It may not be high class, but it's still class.
I find it significant that people like Donini, Bob D'A and Warbler -- still climbing hard after all these years -- also still frequent this forum. Now if I could only get them to agree with me!
OK. I get tired of the ad hominem attacks that inhabit so many threads. And I give Avery credit for attacking what he doesn't like without attacking specific people. That often takes rather a great deal of self-discipline to make clear that it's behavior, not people, to which we object.
That said, it doesn't take me very long to skip the noise and read the signals. Besides, sometimes, the noise has an entertainment value of its own.

OMG, it is a public forum, with lots of people posting. Some post useful stuff, some post garbage. Interpretation of what is useful and what is garbage is very subjective, and again, this is a PUBLIC forum. SOOOOO to make it better, bump things that are useful to you, don't open threads that you find useless and offensive. It is quite simple. YOU ARE NOT MAKING THE FORUM BETTER BY STARTING ANOTHER WHINING THREAD THAT INVOLVES NO FKING CLIMBING MATERIAL!!!!!

Sorry Survival, I remember you mentioning John Dale. From a Kiwi point of view he was a guy that sprang from nowhere. I remember him soloing the Shelia Face of Mt Cook (3000 ft of thoughtful alpine climbing) in two and a half hours. I've never met him and haven't heard his name mentioned here for years.

John Dale is the real thing, trust me. I saw him do some sh#t on the P.O. that normal humans don't do.
He still springs from nowhere. He is a dedicated husband, father, climber, and sheepf*#ker.
I haven't seen him face to face for 30 years, and I would do damn near anything for him.
Thanks for answering Avery.

I initiated this thread because a friend of mine got obscenely abused, and took it (understandably) very much to heart. All I'm asking for is a bit decorum among the exchanges.

Do you have any pics from the POW climb you could possibly post?
I tell you brother, it's all true. There was John Dale climbing Tangerine Trip, with an Italian that didn't speak English, and then climbing the Pacific Ocean with me and Bob Williams. There were CRAZY nights at the Mountain Room Bar, trying to figure out where the money was coming from, and who was going to pay for the next stolen round.
Brother, I'm telling you it was the best of times. John and I fixing pitches while we mistakenly let Bob buy the wall food. We ended up with Sarah Lee Cakes, and a half case of Coca Cola. Luckily there was enough weed and cigarettes to go around. This was before Bob found Jesus and was born again.
Intense, beautiful and fun, all the way around. One of the best moments was when John finished the big hook traverse up high, found a good crack, and screamed "This crack's gonna get as#@&%es".
Avery, I hope I can find some pictures for you, but I make no promises.
Find John and he will confirm everything I have to say.

To be truthful, Supertopo has always been this perilous and all the other things everyone is saying it has become.
If you think it is worsening, it isn't, perhaps just more populated. if you really want to see how bad groups like this can get, just look back at rec. climbing from the 1990's and early 2000's.
And this is actually human nature, sorry to say. When you don't see one another, you might do unspeakable things to that person with only the slightest urging. The Milgram experiments and similar research have shown us this over and over.

Individuals make the decision to be classy or not. I ignore a some people who are not worthy of my time. Plus I have concluded that worthless/mean people don't even deserve my anger. Instead I will always pay attention to a few that are extremely awesome. I'll take their influence over my life and leave the rest.
I also know that trying to herd people into acting better, you really will have better luck herding feral cats.
Instead be classy and... Classy people will relate to you, hang out, surround you. Being an ass... Well, if you like being surrounded by asses go ahead. Being one is a sure way to keep a crowd of asses up close and personal.

Hi Anastasia, interesting comments.
If you regard yourself as in anyway classy then stand by for some flak, it's sure to come your way. All I asked was for some common courtesy to be shown to fellow poster's and all manner of insults came my way. I agree with everything you said, but you might have stepped over the line by attempting to introduce some positive, intelligent thoughts. I already see the mindless elements emerging from the shadows.....

How many people out there think this thread should continue?
Let me know how you feel about, what's it to be?
As the initiator of this thread I will ultimately have the final say.
Speaking from a strictly personnel point of view I don't think there's much to be gained by continuing. But I will happily bower to the will of the people, whatever that may be.

I recently found a copy at a thrift store. It was the issue we passed around in high school. I enjoyed reading it just as much this time.

Whats all this nonsense about me being two different people. I'm just the one single, solitary person. We're both in agreement on that.

Hey Dingus and Locker, have you ever thought about becoming a pair of comic-singers. You should give it some serious consideration.
Incidentally, Anastasia appears to have made you guys almost coherent.

I like how this thread started with a kiwi saying we have no class & now we have a kiwi on the same thread saying the classiest things. Oh the irony!
If your statement is true Matt I hope to never become a man.

The irony is not lost on me, Ryan. I've had enough of the stupidity on this thread. Unless Hawk and Kakapo get their act together and attempt some civilized behavior, I'll delete it.

I agree Todd, where is the class?. When ever I've thought about deleting this thread Ive been talked out of it.
Perhaps if you took another gulp of that "crappy wine" you mentioned earlier in this thread things might appear a little more classy.

Lol, Avery is catching the beat for sure.
After reading this thread and saying some dumb shet on it as well I've come to realize that class may be on somewhat of a sliding scale. Especially on the internet.
Edit- well that sounds not too bad Matt. I'm hoping to go bouldering in the am if I don't stay up on supertopo all night & then go to work to save some $$ to go to California as well lol. Maybe go camping on the day of The Lord.

"Svengali?" You give me too much credit Locker. Ha! I am trying to manipulate a two year old to go to bed and I'm failing. I so could use a little selfish time with the husband. Then again maybe my kid is more able at two than most here so I just might appear "convincingly skilled."
