The American Alpine Club has set up a donation fund for John Bachar.

Donations can be made to the American Alpine Club for the John Bachar Fund. People can either mail checks to us at:

American Alpine Club
710 10th St. Suite 100
Golden CO 80401

Or donate online at www.americanalpineclub.org. Click on “support us” and take it from there.

In either case we need to know in the memo line on a check or a note or the comment field in the online option that this is for John Bachar.

Anyone in Mammoth Lakes can still drop off donations at Mammoth Mountaineering and the Acopa shoe offer is still on. Although out of town people may do better to buy straight from Acopa. Wear Acopa.

Peter Croft has volunteered his time and a slide show!!! Date and place to be determined. Think about September 8 ish.

Peter can do on Thursday Sept 21 or Friday Sept 22. No go on Saturday. People have said they want to come from some distances. Is Friday better than Thursday just so people can come from out of town? Can we still celebrate Steves birthday on the 22nd?

I've looked through a few threads here and at Acopa's site and didn't see any info on the "Acopa shoe offer"....I've been thinking of buying some Spectres and if it would be an opportunity to help, I would rather do that than take advantage of a prodeal. Can someone provide a link or some info?

Go Acopa, go John, everyone else, go safely and with joy.

for the foreseeable future, Mammoth Mountaineering will give John the proceeds (after whsle) to John for his expenses, of our Acopa sales. We will cover shipping. you can call the store or email me at dave@mammothgear.com or 760 934 4191.

We have had some overseas people ask (we dont ship out of the US)and another about the B3 that we dont sell. Also, I would like to get our store name out of these posts. All we want to do is help. So, of course, when Acopa gets going again all sales directly through them will also benefit John and Acopa 100%.

Paypal account coming.

Hey everyone,
Please do not be afraid to donate any amount. Even if you can only spare $5 or $20, every act of generosity will help. John has a broken neck and will need extensive treatment. Trust me when I say that the bills are going to be phenomenal.

During our time of crisis he was air lifted to Utah University Hospital. I am afraid to see what that bill is going to look like once it arrives.

Beyond that, thanks for all your well wishes. All of you have helped us with our psychological needs. Losing Steve is very hard to live with.

Best Regards,

Anastasia, glad to hear you're doing better. Yeah, the airlift cost is going to be a big one. Ground RA transports are about $500+ these days to a local hospital, I can't imagine what an airlift across state lines will be.

Just know everyone is pulling for you guys and will be doing all they can to help JB out with this. Stay strong and positive. Time will heal things and people will still be doing all they can to get John 100% again for some time to come. Financially, emotionally and otherwise.

ps - any Eastside benefits? I take it this one's in Golden. How about one in Bishop or Mammoth?

Cool tradboy, I just went back and read the initial post and was gonna change it cause I realized that was where the fund was, not the fundraiser itself.

What about a Labor Day event? Weekend BBQ funraiser and climbing, etc?? People would have a little more time to attend it from out of state since it's a long weekend.

bump.

and also....everyone out there, think very hard about getting yourself a high-deductible health insurance plan. For about $90 a month you can have yourself covered for all expenses above the initial $3500-$5000.

You can also pair it with a Health Savings Account, which allows you to spend on medical treatments and take a tax deduction. And medical treatments can include dental work, prescriptions, doctor visits, physical therapy or even therapeutic massage.

Very worthwhile for anyone to think about. Terrible when events like this happen, but it can allow us all to make sure we will be taken care of if they happen to us.

Insurance is legalized extortion. Most likely, there will be limits on the coverage from his auto insurance, possible exceeded in an accident with this level of trauma and response.

But I speculate.

I'll gladly donate some promo materials for this gig, stickers or a couple banners, if anyone from the event reads this, email grindstonegraphics AT gmail DOT com, ask for Pasha.

Might I suggest since we are all spread across this country that we have several gatherings Sep. 15 to 22.

The AAC is down in Golden, this should provide a venue for us Front Range kids to get together for personal stories, slide shows, and giveaways to support the (financial) burden of recovery.

Sounds like Johns having surgery on, I think, C4/C5. They are going to fuse them. He found out he has significant weakness in his left tricep and they dont like it. He needs another MRI and then they will schedule him in. He is still wearing the cervical collar.

thanks to everyone who has already donated. Offers of fundraisers in Salt Lake City and Illinois have happened. Thanks to Rick Poedtke for the donation tubs at many locations in Mammoth and Larry Arthur at Mountain Tools for helping me with advise.

A suitable venue for Crofts slide show is being secured. We are trying to find the perfect place in Mammoth. We want to find a good place for a lot of people and a silent auction. I'll know more tomorrow hopefully. Any company representative or indivual can email me at dave@mammothgear.com to donate anything. Soon I'll be calling you anyway.

My father suffered damage in this area as a result of a fall. Severe damage to the cord above the C4 area results in loss of ability to breathe. Severe damage lower down can result in quadriplegia. Not an expert but it sounds like John's damage is not severe and they are trying to relieve pressure on specific nerves where they branch off from the spinal cord. Fractures in vertebrae do not automatically require correction. I have five fractured vertebrae myself but have noticed only steadily decreasing intelligence.

Sounds very hopeful.

Fusion C4-5: I know there are a lot of medical types out there and i hope i dont step on toes or sound like a snob. Im a PA for a rehab group in so. oregon(spinal cord, brain inj, etc.) used to do spine surgery.

typically fusions are done from the front. Disc is removed and the small tunnels where the nerves run from the spinal cord to the extremities are enlarged(if needed) to reduce pressure on nerves. Then a small piece of bone is placed between the two vertebrae(where the disc was removed)and a small plate is then screwed into place to hold the adjacent vertebrae together.
Occassionally(esp. with truama) fusions must be done from the back too. The goal is obviously to try and stabilize the vertebrae. The instability is caused by vertebral fractures and/or ligamentous ruptures. Obviously when vertebrae are unstable there is risk of further neurological damage.

The good news is that fusing only two vertebrae doesn't severely impact the function of your neck(at least at the C4-5 level). hope this helps.
I sure hope John is on the mend. While never having met him, i saw him periodically in the valley back in the early and mid 80's. His climbing certainly has inspired a generation. get well, be patient have faith.

Just to keep this rolling...

I'm in the midst of organizing a huge gear raffle that will hopefully consist of the ultimate dream rack, that if all goes as planned, will contain just about anything and everything that you could ever imagine... including guide services (or fantastic partners) and lodging at premier locations.

I started working on this project at about 3:00am Friday morning, and finally quit with the phone calls and emails at about 11:00pm last evening. I will most certainly resume this project first thing Monday morning.

So far, the love and support for those that I have contacted has been pouring in with pledges of equipment from the many gear manufacturers, distributors and dealers from the largest and best known companies, all the way down to the level of local climbing gyms...

As climbers, we are one big family, and when tragedies like this happen to our brothers, we must act.

By the end of the week, I'll have a much better grasp on what all has been pledged and or has already arrived, at which point we'll be in a better position to finalize the details in regards to raffle ticket prices. My dream would be to receive so much gear that the rack (or racks if there are enough multiple contributions) will be valued well in excess of $4,000 retail, thus being able to sell 1000 tickets for somewhere between $25-50 each (obviously value dependent), with 100% of the proceeds going to John's medical expense and recovery fund.

At this point, a very special thanks go out to the following for their love and support in regards to this project that is dedicated to keeping Steve Karafa's dream in motion, by helping his "brother" and business partner get back on his feet:

Tim,
Sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday. Chaos happened. Sign us up for a set of cams, a wad of draws, a rope and a crash pad. The irony oozes out of those last two items so I coudn't resist. I know JB will take their donations with the sense of humor I intended. Besides, despited trying to follow JB's 30 year lead, most of us still use a rope. We all have an infinite amount of respect for John and an infinite amount of disrespect for the state of health care in the USA. God know, I fought my battles with it and, even with pretty good insurance, my medical adventures were heinously expensive. Here's what I learned:

1) Insurance companies make their money by collecting premiums and denying claims.
2) Health insurance companies exist to benefit their shareholders, not their patients.
3) You have to fight like hell to extarct any benefit from a health insurance company.

Let's talk on Monday.

We have a venue for Peter Crofts slide show in Mammoth Lakes on Sept 15.

The show will be at the Village at Mammoth at an outdoor venue. Intrawest was very generous in offering this site for free as they also have a Wine and Jazz event earlier that day. A tent will probably be provided if its cold.

We will have a silent auction as well. Misha from www.Verglasphoto.com has donated a print. Kevin Calder from Mountain Light Gallery (Galen Rowell) has donated a print. And Vern Clevenger has donated a print so far. Also, the raffle will be huge. People have even donated pies. I even think a local dentist is donating. :)

Good work and a cheers to Tim Greene. You are incredible. Its a great idea. BD is flying Peter Croft to Salt Lake City to do a slide show there too.

Donations: See the first post in the thread. The link to the American Alpine Club site is http://www.americanalpineclub.org/pages/page/8. If you click on the "One Time Gift" link, it takes you to an on-line payment system. The system allows you to specify in the notes with the donation that it's for the John Bachar Fund.

The American Alpine Club is a 501(c)(3) organization, and so able to issue U.S. taxpayers with a tax credit receipt for donations.

Just responding to some of the postings I've seen. I haven't read all of this. Regarding the fusion...weakness in the triceps is usally from C7 or the C6/C7 level. Werner asked about the fusion...basically, a neurosurgeon would go in from the front and fuse the C6 vertebra to the C7 (or another level if that is the case). He/she would either use bone taken from John's pelvis or cadaver bone material.

Fairly lengthy rehab (I'm a physical therapist)and the outcome is usually good. Some limited cervical motion.

If he is indeed covered by auto insurance they should cover all the expenses unless there are some extentuating circumstances.

I am very happy to say John does have a “catastrophic” insurance policy from Blue Cross. As many of you know I posted that John did not have insurance.

When I heard of this, today, I was both elated and very distraught. When the terrible news surfaced about the accident I made some phone calls and offered to help if fund raising was needed. It was needed, and is needed. However, I misunderstood and John does have some health insurance.

I sincerely regret misleading anyone and saying untruths about John’s insurance status. I will learn from this mistake. I will gladly honor any donations made. Please contact me at 760 937 1492 and I will make right.

I was asking John about his car insurance and discovered he did not know I had posted any information about his insurance status. Since people have asked, his car insurance was liability only.

John does still need our support and help.

Discussion has begun about a Steve Karafa memorial fund or scholarship. John has pledged all unused money raised will go to this effort or another non-profit charity.

Please continue to support John’s cause, despite my error. It goes beyond money.

Actually when I broke my back in '93 after cratering from 75', BcBs denied just about everything on my claim and paid next to nothing. Morning bump to post the meat of an email I received from DT...

-----------------------------------------------

Hi Tim, I am just touching base. I know everything is going good for you and your end. Ours too. John's seeing our love and its helping, I am sure.

He actually has 5 broken vertebrae in the cervical area. They scheduled him for surgery for this Friday. Because he has health insurance he is seeing some great doctors. The surgery will go in the neck and they will spread the muscles rather than cut them. The operation will be with a microscope and the prognosis is good. The strength to his tricep is expected to return over a few months period. The doctors said most cases would provide 50% to 90% of his strength back in 3 months or so.

I operate a digital imaging business so am able to supply all labor and materials at no cost and will take no profit from this, so ALL of the funds collected except shipping will go directly to John to use towards his medical bills or to send on to Steve's family as he sees fit.

While I'm certainly doing what I can, it's clearly the companies and individuals I've listed that need our thanks, not me!

The following is a post I made on RC earlier today, in response to a request for info about the raffle:

The list just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Looks like some awesome stuff in there too.

You're doin an awesome job there!

Any word yet on when, where, and how to buy tickets for this raffle yet?

Jason }}

I'm not sure yet, as I'm in the midst of planning an expedition for my partners and I, in some far far away place!!! ;~)

Actually, I'm hoping to be able to be in a position to have things in order enough that we can go "LIVE" with the raffle by the 1st of the week...

When I set a goal of $4000 or so, I honestly hadn't expected the response that I've had, and fwiw, that number was easily surpassed about $15,000 ago... What this means, is that there wil actually be multiple winners due to the amount of gear being contributed, which also means that the tickets will be $50 each!

I will be creating a website that features everything being raffled, and obviously stating whom gave what, with links to contributors websites as I've been doing all along. Purchashing tickets will be handled via a PayPal link (sucks that they steal 3%, but oh well), and the "tickets" will simply be in the form of an online database that I will manually update several times a day to show the following format (below would indicate that I personally bought 3 tickets, and it lists the range of numbers):

..............................................................................................
: Tim G -- Jonesboro, Arkansas -- 783,784,785 :
..............................................................................................

I feel this is the easiest manner w/o incurring printing and mailing costs, and it will be closely monitored by a handful of the top industry guys (such as Mal Daly) that have agreed to oversee everything for clarity.

The winning numbers will be "drawn" via a random number generator, then cross referenced against the database to identify the winners.

Anyone having any questions in regards to this, is free to contact me at anytime by calling my cell phone at 870-627-0594.

In light of the past few conversations with "industry insiders" and especially at the suggestion of Mal Daly/Trango, I think we may very well be dropping the ticket prices down to $25ea, 3/$50, and more for more...

Jay Young has further suggested that if the prices are dropped, we should eliminate the 1000 ticket thing and sell as many as humanly possible, both to reach more people as well as fill the karma bank as full as possible for the next person that needs our love and support. I say this, because JB has suggested donating all excess funds to a possible Steve Karafa Memorial Fund, which I feel would be the best possible way to preserve Steve's memory and keep his dreams alive within us all.

I would like some feedback from you all about the above suggestions, and even more so to speak w/ JB at this point if it's a possibility...

Holy Hell!!!

An oil painting client of mine has just donated a 16x20 head & shoulders portrait valued at $2000... She says she'll paint anything from a traditional portrait to a climbing scene to a landscape, if that's what the winner wishes.

Because of dollar value of this single contribution, I would prefer it be set aside for a silent auction that will certainly raise even more funds.

Good news today, John has just been released from Cedars-Sinai Hospital after a very successful surgery. The doctor informed me that it will take six months to see how much function will return and we are all very hopeful. One thing for sure is that John will find a way to overcome his obstacles.

John should be returning home by next Friday. It will take eight weeks for his injuries to heal enough for him to start physical therapy. Until then, I am sure he's going to be a very restless guy despite having a broken neck.

Thanks everyone for your support. It is helping all of us to pull through.
Sending "all" my best,
Anastasia Frangos
P.S.
I did send the hugs and kisses to him.
He smiled. :)

It is official! Dave and Autumn Talsky(Mammoth Mountineering Supply) in conjuction with "BD", have "Officially" scheduled the Mammoth Lakes area John Bachar Fund Raiser. It will feature an amazing and a "Got to Go See" slide show by the one and only Peter Croft, with a "Gear Raffle" to follow, on the 15th of September at 7PM. It will held at the "Events Plaza" located at the "Village at Mammoth". $10.00 admission fee which of course will all go towards the growing fund to help John and his ensuing medical costs. Below is the wonderful poster that has been printed up for this great and wonderful event to help out one of the true modern "Legends" of this life we call "Climbing". Come and enjoy the great gathering of many to help John with what most certainly will be a costly recovery. For further information, contact the folks at MMS, 760-934-4191.

Just wanted to update everyone on the progress of the sale of the limited edition prints of JB. So far the support has been tremendous, we have raised $3000.00 to date, and print orders continue to come in. The On the Lamb edition is nearly sold out, and I have added an additional image of John soloing Outer Limits, which was previously on the cover of the Yosemite Climbing Calendar in 1987.

Thanks to all of you who purchased, we are filling orders as quickly as possible, and have shipped the first ones today. Please pass the word to anyone you think might be interested.

The link, once again:
