Handa Cvic..... Just dont get one with carb.

I have a 2001 ....5 spd... and it gets 40mpg on the road, about 31 round town. No weird parts (batterys) just a basic car.

I think I need a lot more info from you. Assuming you'll be using it for work and play I'd go with an 87-89 Toyota van with manual trans and 4wd. Should be able to find one in that price range. They get about 22mpg and last forever. My 2wd has 337,000 on it and runs great. Removable bed platform in the back for trips. Take out the bed and tons of room for work related crap.

I've got a '98 Merc Sable wagon with 135k on it, strong V6, all power, leather, etc. You can have it if you want to come out here and run the crown, base, and some oddball door and window trim in my cabin. Hell, I'll even throw down for the plane ticket out here, hang in California a while, then drive it home.

I just sold my honda odysee for three grand. Of course the transmission was out and I owed 5 grand on it. Only got three grand because I bought a brand new one. That I will pay forever on, but it has a warranty and gets 40 mpg

I'd take that offer also.

However

If you don't

Get a S Series Saturn with under 150k miles (2door 4 door or wagon)

$1500 max for a car under 150k miles that will go 250k easy with minor maintenance and easy cheap repairs. Stuff that will always happen at that milage in any vehicle.. alternator, starter, water pump, radiator, occasional sensor. Nice thing is the engine and transmission and electrical on them tend to be stout.

Can get 42mpg on highway depending on model and never less than 33mpg even with automatic and the dohc engine.

I paid a premium for a 2000 manual wagon (very hard to find) in great condition with 120k miles. $2100 .. did a fifth gear swap from the sohc transmission and get 39MPG higway and 31 in town.

Easily as reliable as toyota, subaru or honda and for 1/2 to 1/3 the price in condition/milage.

Had a civic and loved that car. Also loved the crv but prolly have to spend more than that. In about 89 I bought a 4 year old yugo with 40,000 miles on it for $400. Drove it for 4 years and put another 40,000 on it and sold it for $250. If you can find a yugo definitely buy it. It came with its own wrenches and a heater.

Early 90's Jeep Cherokee--not the best mpg, but good enough and they'll go anywhere and haul plenty of shite (tow stuff, too). I ditched a mid 90's Suby for one and haven't looked back; that 4.0l six will last pertnear forever and is easy and cheap to fix...

...fwiw :-)

edit: fun to mod up, plenty of parts out there, everywhere AND you can sleep in it at the difficult spots to get to

My 1998 Subaru Legacy Wagon was the most economical car I ever owned. $2800 and 250k+ miles with regular care to it. I got 30k miles on it with the need to replace an interior dome light and then sold it for $1800. Might have been just good luck. I called it a "poor man's Mercedes." Up to 32 mpg if I used ethanol free.

I'll sell you my 2005 Civic Hybrid.

200,000 nearly all highway miles. It's made crass country trips from New England to Squamish, Oregon, and at least 2 (lost count) voyages to Wyoming.

Very well maintained on a regular maintenance schedule. Tires are getting worn, co2 sensors (useless) are getting finicky, and the suspension is shot.

PM if interested.

Someone else mentioned the Jeep Cherokees. The mid 80's through late 90s with the straight 6 4.0 are incredibly reliable and if there is a minor problem easy and cheap to repair. The Jeeps are underpriced compared to comparable vehicles in most areas and 3k or less will get you a good clean one with lotsa mileage left to go usually.

If MPGs dont matter much to you and you really need 4wd then they are great options. DO realize you will be lucky to get 22mpg on the highway and 16ish around town though. Unless you buy a Subaru you generally won't do much better in MPGs with 4x4s.

Problem with Subaru is that even a beat up dying one with 300k miles will go for $3k+ which in my mind is rediculous. A nice one with lotsa life left tend to go over that $3k by a fair bit unless you luck out. Yeah they are good cars but $3k for an almost dead one that is worth in my opinion not much more than it would cost to tow to the junkyard where it will soon reside?

I'm still a Saturn S-Series fan myself. Seem to be the best combination of reliability efficiency and initial price there is for any vehicle available. I have spent a lot of time looking for that sweet spot.

I'm going for it, how can I not? It's one of the most generous offers I've ever received, and I'm a huge proponent of trade for work. It's how I got my last truck actually.

Plus, my dad is moving from NH to CO on Monday, I'll be able to stop in and check out his new digs on my way home. Edge, too. And anyone else who wants a belay slave.

Edit; And, I've never been to J Tree. Stoked! I just need to figure out a compound mitre saw to use while I'm there. Anyone want to rent me one?

So, life and bills are getting in the way. Obviously, if I'm inquiring about a three thousand dollar car, I don't have a lot of money to play with.

The trip is off, I couldn't suss out enough work to facilitate the trip.

If anyone in the inter-mountain west is looking for a quality carpenter, stand up guy, and tall tale weaver, I'm all ears.

Thanks, TBC, Mike M, EKat, and others for your generous offers. Someday.

i agree with the early 90's Jeep Cherokee. you won't get good gas mileage, but those things are sturdy and can handle off road nicely. if you take care of it, it'll last up and over 200k miles.

Thats unfortunate Brandon.. great offer plus the bonus of a bit of climbing in J-Tree.

Regarding the jeeps..One of the better engines made by any company was the jeeps inline 6 4.0 Avoid the V-8s though, not as reliable and eat even more gas.

And as I said if 4wd does not matter then go Saturn S-Series and save yourself a G or two. There are 4 main brands of cars you see all the time still on the road, running strong and 15 years old or more. Toyota Honda Subaru and Saturn. Of those the Saturns are the ones underpriced and only the old Honda Civics got slightly better MPG (sometimes).

I second the motion. A good friend put nearly 300K on her old, carbureted, stick shift Civic. With no major repairs. It was finally becoming downright unsafe with suspension issues and she wanted to take a long drive.
She found a home for it and then got a '98 or so with 150K miles. Her long time mechanic found it from one of his customers.
It's also a stick. Stay with a stick. Hand crank windows. I believe just about $3K.
They don't make 'em like they used to.
