The North American Climbing History Archives (NACHA) and the City of Oakdale are pleased to announce the third Oakdale Climbers Festival happening October 17-19, 2014 in Oakdale, California.

The theme for 2014 is: A Woman's Reach- Adventures in a Parallel Realm.

We will be taking a diverse look at women's climbing history with speakers from several generations coming to share their perspective and experiences.

The tentative speakers list for our third Festival includes:

Audrey Salkeld (Keynote Speaker)
Arlene Blum
Irene Beardsley
Annie Whitehouse
Christy Tews
Beverly Woolsey
Janie Taylor
Sibylle Hechtel
Ellie Hawkins
Barb Eastman-Kimbrough
Jill Lawrence
Kitty Calhoun
Elaine Matthews
Rosie Andrews
Cherry Schacher (Merritt)
Maria Cranor
Carla Firey
Madaleine Sorkin
Heidi Wirtz
Mayan Smith-Gobat

We are still waiting for confirmation from more amazing women so this promises to be yet another extraordinary historical gathering.

On Friday evening we will celebrate the 36th anniversary of the successful 1978 American Women's Himalayan Expedition which achieved the first American ascent of mighty Annapurna by Irene Beardsley and Vera Komarkova supported by Sherpas Mingma Tsering and Chewang Ringjing. Several members of the expedition are going gather to reflect on this grand and momentous adventure after we have the pleasure of watching Dyanna Taylor's excellent documentary film.

Please put our dates down on your calendar and plan on coming to join in the fun.

The Festival is held at the Gene Bianchi Community Center 110 South 2nd Avenue Oakdale, CA 95361

The festival will run from 6-10pm on Friday, 10am- 10pm on Saturday and 10am- 4pm on Sunday.

More details will be forthcoming as we firm up the roster.

Tickets are $25 if you preregister and will be $30 the week before the Festival.

If you would like to use Paypal please register through the Festival website at:

http://www.oakdaleclimbersfestival.com

Your Paypal confirmation is sent directly to me via email and puts you on the list of registered attendees.

If you would like to use a credit card please contact me directly.

My email address is: scgrossman@msn.com

I need the following four items:

1) Credit card number

2) Security code (usually on the card back)

3) Expiration dates

4) Billing zip code

I will delete you information once the transaction is confirmed and send you confirmation via email.

If you notify us a week ahead of the event, tickets are transferable once purchased to allow someone else to claim your tickets under the name that you provide.

the middle of October is prime time in the Valley...

carving out those precious days is a part of the "value proposition" calculation that changes from youthful to "well seasoned" climber;

and so it should be.

Nice theme. I heard Lynn Hill gave a great talk for Stanford last weekend. Too bad she can't attend, but the line up seems great!
November or December would be a better time for the event. October is great for climbing during the weekends. :)

In marketing, a customer value proposition (CVP) consists of the sum total of benefits which a vendor promises a customer will receive in return for the customer's associated payment (or other value-transfer).

Customer Value Management was started by Ray Kordupleski in the 1980s and discussed in his book, Mastering Customer Value Management. A customer value proposition is a business or marketing statement that describes why a customer should buy a product or use a service. It is specifically targeted towards potential customers rather than other constituent groups such as employees, partners or suppliers. Similar to the unique selling proposition, it is a clearly defined statement that is designed to convince customers that one particular product or service will add more value or better solve a problem than others in its competitive set.--Wiki Explains

Reply to V. Muchmacho on behalf of the organizers:
We're sorry Miss Hill cannot attend. We believe you will not miss her by attending. Rather, we feel that you may drive home from Oakdale, should you decide to attend, charmed by the rest of our speakers in the program and, who knows, even more stoked about climbing than you are at present.
Many of us who have heard of your short, meteoric career would also like to meet you and speak with you about your life. So, the proposition is there, the factors to calculate gain/loss are apparent, and we hope you make a wise decision. If we do not see you at the festival, YUR SURELY GONNA DIE!

The dates in October are firm and as late in the year as possible since we had folks chased over Tioga Pass by storms for the last two years with the Festival happening one week later.

The desirability of being around Yosemite in October is one of the contributing factors to our choice. We want people around to attend and want the venue to be attractive enough that speakers are easily persuaded to be in the area if they are planning on climbing.

Whether you feel compelled to attend is up to you, of course. All we can do is offer you an attractive entertainment option.

I am very proud to announce that we will be finishing up the Friday night presentations with an hour devoted to the 1978 American Women's Himalayan Expedition.

On October 15, 1978 Irene Beardsley (then Irene Miller) and Vera Komarkova became the first Americans to summit Annapurna supported by Sherpas Mingma Tsering and Chewang Ringjing. This is an amazing climb and I am really looking forward to hearing about it from the participants perspective.

Janie took the time to organize a wonderful reunion for the early Tahquitz climbers several years ago and so this Festival finds her now in return. She already had heard about it and was thinking how nice it would be to involved and remembered in this way and I contacted not long after that.

I would like to announce that my very close friend and wall partner Barb Eastman- Kimbrough is going to join us. Barb and Molly Higgins were the second rope of women up El Cap after Sibylle and Bev and first up the Nose among her many adventures.

great program tonight

Audrey Salkeld provided a wonderful history of woman climbing from the 1800s to the 1940s

my earliest memories of Audrey was reading the "People" section of Mountain magazine. Her talk ended with a poignant memoir of Nea Morin, whose book lends its title to this year's festival.

This was followed by a fantastic presentation by Annie Whitehorse, Christy Tews, Arlene Blum, and Irene Beardsley (left to right) recalling the 1978 American Women's Himalayan Expedition to Annapurna

this was a great recollection of that expedition, with the members recalling the details and addressing the audience questions at the end. A unique event to experience, climbers getting to sit around and talk about climbing.

The rest of the program should be great also, looking forward to it!

^^^^¥What Ed said. I was edge of my seat for both presentations.
The fashions of the women climbers in the 1800s was nothing short of "how'd they do that" .... very interesting ... up to and including the necessity to 'resummit after one of the earliest women climbers had left her skirt on top and they were entering a village.
Of great interest was the great difficulty the Annapurna women had in obtaining permits. Yet their male counterparts had little difficulty. Much of the difficulty lay in the American Alpine Clubs reluctance to recommend them. Also interesting, but not unexpected was the great criticism they got for Sherpa use yet all the men's teams used Sherpas.
Looking forward to another great day
There was good attendance last night and folk hung out long after the posted closing time.

Sorry I couldn't be there and please post more photos and reports!

As for the Sherpas themselves, they too were reluctant to work on an all women's expedition in the beginning. A few months later when I returned to Nepal and talked to them they were all enthusiastic about women's expeditions and were hoping for more. "Women are much safer than men" and "Women don't get angry and shout as much as men" were two of the comments I heard.

And of course Annie marrying a Sherpa and taking him to the U.S. marked a turning point in the way the Sherpas saw themselves in the long march from British servants to becoming the international guides they aspire to now days.

what an incredible collection of climbers and their amazing stories...

Today was packed...

Irene, Arlene and Janie Taylor-Levy talked about their climbing and many ways that their lives were shaped by it. Wonderful to hear Janie's recollections of the "Golden Age" of Yosemite climbing.

Beverly Powell-Woosley also discussed those early days, and the SoCal scene. All these fresh new perspectives.

Elaine Matthews and Cherry Schacher recalled their time with a lot of focus on the 'Gunks

and Rosie Andrews talked about a lot of her climbing in the 'Gunks and many of the other places she was active... great stories involving Werner Braun and an incident in Red Rocks with Annie Whitehouse that I'm not retelling here...

of course I have this slightly mixed up in order as Maria Cranor

talked, and her focus was on a very interesting direction of her path, including Black Diamond and the way that company invented itself.

Jill Lawrence provided an incredible perspective of her cutting edge climbing and especially the various women climbing events in England sponsored by the Pinnacle club, and meeting other women climbers, as well as her extensive collaborations with many other climbers

Sibylle, Ellie Hawkins and Barb Eastman-Kimbrough described their experiences growing up and climbing, lots of Yosemite-centric stories and remembrances

Barb's story filled in a lot of detail for me beyond her famous ascent.

All these women were definitely kicking ass in their climbing, quite inspirational, really.

The final talk tonight was a quick direct talk by Kitty Calhoun who told some incredible tales of a few of her formative climbs...

her notable quote regarding the arrival at a base camp where they could see the climb for the first time "...my partner and I had agreed that if we couldn't say something positive then we wouldn't say anything at all. We didn't talk to each other for a couple of days..." what a prelude to an epic.

I was always curiuous about Janie Taylor since Layton had a story about Royal telling him to come out to Yosemite and if he could climb as well as Janie, then he'd buy him a beer. Layton used to relish telling everyone in Colorado that Royal never bought him that beer so it became a joke for awhile. "You put up a new route? That's nice, but can you climb as well as Janie Taylor?".

Of course I'm sure she never knew, but we knew that she was the first woman in the Valley to climb 5.9. Her feat caused Chuck Pratt and Frank Sacherer to solemnly proclaim that a woman might be able to do 5.9 friction climbing, but no woman would ever be able to climb a 5.9 crack. Bev Johnson was of course the first woman to break that barrier.

Wonderful gathering all around. Thanks again to Steve and Mimi for organizing all and making it run right.

I was especially impressed how the presentations weaved in family, work, friendships, causes and the social milieu of the days when, of course, they had to swim up several waterfalls as many male climbers doubted and resisted and diminished them in so many ways. We all know there is much more to climbing than climbing and we begin to get the bigger picture as we stumble through the years trying to mesh the flat and vertical worlds. But how refreshing to hear and see that big picture through the eyes of articulate, forthright women of the walls and mountains.

A complete success. Thanks to each and every presenter. Bravo.

another great day...

Carla Firey told the amazing story of her family's role in the development of the Northwest mountaineering. Her father and mother Joe and Joan Firey played a large role in that exploration, and Joan was a member of the 1978 American Women's expedition on Annapurna.

This is a story partially told in Alpinist 47 article on the Picket Range... but that is only a part of the story of the Firey's participation. Carla very modestly touched on her own accomplishments in the Wind River Range and Yosemite.

Annie recounted her life in climbing... and got us all thinking about the obvious issues of men and women working together in close quarters for long time periods... with a hilarious telling of an advertising layout that never saw the pages of the climbing rags, lesson? you have to watch out when Mal is ordering drinks!

there are many other important tangents off of that climbing life too.

There was an extended video clip that Steve made of an interview with Lynne Hill, wonderful that her telepresence was at the Festival, her spirit loomed large in the ether.

The three final presentations gave a demonstration of just how bad ass the current generation of climbers are... from Mayan Smith-Gobat's projects on Yosemite big walls, free

which I can only look at admiringly, not ever going to be able to touch it... which was the same thing watching Madeleine Sorkin's equally stunning free pushes up The Captain

and finally the kinetic, enthusiastic story telling of Heidi Wertz's climbing life, so much fun to hear about after years of only catching glimpses of what she's been up to

What a great festival, thanks so much to Steve and Mimi, and to all the people who participated and made it an extraordinary event. Many new friends made, and many acquaintances remade and strengthened.

The Oakdale Festival was amazing this year and hats off to the ladies for stepping up and proudly letting those present know about themselves and their accomplishments.

Audrey Salkeld did a stupendous and admirably thorough historical survey of women's climbing history going all the way back to get the event going and then Team Annapurna blew everyone away with their engaging and intimate discussion of the ground breaking 1978 American Women's Himalayan Expedition on the 36th anniversary of their success. Very inspiring to feel the power of these women and the unique bond that they have forged in the high mountains together. Still leading by example decades later.

Plenty to admire and appreciate about each and every speaker on Saturday and Sunday with the last panel of Mayan Smith-Gobat, Madaleine Sorkin and Heidi Wirtz providing the perfect bridge to the present. Mayan's video of climbing the Salathe Headwall had everyone's undivided attention.

The service orientation and projects that many of the speakers have initiated were perhaps the most impressive aspect of their presentations.

Good friendship, mutual appreciation and respect filled the hall with glory as it has for the past two years and many friendships were renewed and rekindled and new ones started.

I will be savoring this Festival for a very long time and thanks for the praise and support coming from the ST stalwarts. Mimi and I really appreciate it!

The lucky folks in the house had all they could want and everyone that stayed home missed a fantastic and memorable gathering.

We will hopefully be back in Oakdale in two years time for more historical fun.

This really was an event that has resonated deeply with me and I am so happy I got to be there for much of it. I very much concur with the synopsis that many of the previous posters wrote about. It was a very meaningful and significant event.

I was absolutely taken by Audrey Salkeld and her presentation. In fact, by 10:30, long after the posted closing, people were still asking questions and wanting to talk more. The early climbing exploits of the women she talked about were nothing short of striking. Trailblazers hardly begins to describe the uniqueness of what these women did.

I was especially looking forward to the discussions on Saturday. These were women who are my contemporaries as to generation (I can't come close to them in climbing). I knew of some of them, especially the women who climbed Annapurna and had "heard" of some of the others. These were women that were just doing something that they loved. Some stumbled into it, others, like the Annapurna women were very calculating about what they were going to do. It was evident there was not ego involved and none of them, with the exception of the Annuapurna women, felt like they were doing anything that would result in lifelong recognition. Clear to me the was that the Annapurna women and the other climbers entered into it with just a passion to do it. The Annapurna women knew, of course, they would be recognized in the media but it was clear this had little to do with their motivation to do the climb. They all had a love, a passion, a great interest in doing what they did.

My biggest "take away" was that these women, some even older than me, continue to live a rich, robust and rewarding life. They went on to have wonderful careers, families and know how to shake every last nugget out of living. Climbing did not "define" their lives, rather climbing became part of a much larger definition of their well lived lives. They certainly don't live in the past. Their lives appear to be as vital now as they were then. If ever you wanted to see women who know how to live in the "here and now" this was the group.

Unfortunately, due to travel plans I was not able to be there Saturday night and Sunday. Luckily Ed and others have done a great job summarizing those discussions.

Bump for a memorable gathering that I am still savoring.

A wealth of experience, wisdom and inspiration in every speaker that came and shared themselves with us. We are very fortunate to have such a splendid community to draw from and this Festival really delivered. I asked everyone to put their climbing in the context of the rest of their lives and was beyond pleased to hear how well they handled that assignment!

Big kudos to the speakers for directing their energies into service projects to help out and share their passions with folks that can benefit and truly appreciate the deep grace and compassion that we can offer each other in the infinite present.

Some ideas: A catered dinner (Simple one) out on the patio with live music so everyone who attends can have some relaxed interaction with one another. Also more vendors to promote and sell stuff outside before you enter the event. Instead of one theme, some varied topics under a very general theme. But I'm sure you and Mimi have already thought of all these things.

Have you asked for suggestions on this thread or any thread here on ST just what people might enjoy as topics or other ideas they'd like to see at Oakdale? Even if it is every other year I would love this gig to go on. You guys have done an awesome job.

Lynne- We have a local rancher who offered to let us have a party on his spread next time around so we are likely going to do something along those lines on Saturday night.

In response to feedback from the last two years we took a long lunch break to give folks time to have a relaxed meal and visit. Socializing and meeting new people are a big part of the glue that makes these gatherings so rewarding with respect to community building and fostering climbing culture which is central to the NACHA mission.

We are always open to advice and suggestion as to creating the best possible experience as this is always an adventure.
