Word from today's Gateway Partners' meeting suggests Glacier Point Rd. may open TOMORROW for this weekend!
Of course, Tioga is WAY MORE relevant to climbers, and they'll be pushing it forward... Let's have a lottery on this year's opening date (for autos)!
Mostly sunny for the foreseeable future... Is May 1st a reasonable guess? Maybe closer to May 15 (my birthday!)...
Since weekends often figure in the NPS's doings, I'll take Friday, May 9th, one day before Life Is A Bivouac's B-Day!
Any other guesses?

I have a vested interest in this matter, seeing as how I have to deliver some furniture to Sacramento in the third week of May, and I would dearly love to hit the Valley on my way home to CO. Then I won't have to backtrack to Tahoe.
May 8, FTW.

in 1988 the fractional snow pack on April 1st was closest to what it was this year...
the road opened on Friday, 4/29
a linear regression would have predicted 4/24 (a Sunday)
this year the fractional snow pack on April 1st was 0.33
the regression predicts: 4/20/14 (a Sunday) with 4/26/14 being one standard deviation low, and 5/2/14 one standard deviation high...
of the 34 years in the NPS table, 22 of those years had the road opening on Friday or Saturday...
Here are my guesses:
5/2 or 5/3 about 40% of a chance
4/18 or 4/19 about 32% of a chance
4/25 or 4/26 about 10% of a chance

May 2nd. If they could open it earlier, they still won't cause it costs money to patrol the road and deal with it up there and late storms could create problems so there's not much pressure to let people in before May
Second guess would be the 9th.
Peace
Karl

My vote was for May 23. Reasoning: nothing to do with snow conditions. I think they should be able to open it much earlier, but will choose not to hurry. But if they wait too long people will be really pissed and start complaining about them keeping a major through route closed. The date I picked is a week before Memorial Day, on a Friday. It's like they're saying "See, we're being really nice to you, you can make your Memorial Day plans."

phylp had a string of logic going up to "...See, we're being really nice to you..."
if anything, avoiding the Memorial Day crush (especially with limited parking and no campground or other services open) would be a reason for them to avoid "being nice" they might open it last minute

There were few storms this winter with long intervals between storms which i'm guessing prevented a base from forming...Throw in the above normal day time temperatures we experienced this winter and i bet the pass will open earlier than last year...

I had a good view of Olmsted Point from Clouds Rest about a week ago. The slabs above the roadcut were almost bare and so the plows should easily clear that zone.
I'll say May 7th opening.

The park web page says plowing began on April 16 and plows have reached Porcupine Flat. At that rate, it shouldn't take too long.

Let's see Tioga got 30% of normal snow fall which equals approx 1/3 of the time and energy to open so the plows could have it clear around the first week of May easy. Though I was just skiing out of Virginia Lakes yesterday and from the top of Black Mountain - Conness and her neighbors looked mighty white...

Tioga Road
Plows reached Tioga Pass on Tuesday, April 22, while a few inches of new snow was falling. However, more plowing is needed to widen the plowed portion of road, plow side roads and parking lots, and peel ice from sections of the road near Tuolumne Meadows. Additional ditching and tree work may also be required. The weather forecast calls for snow Thursday night through Sunday night.
There is currently no estimated opening date for the Tioga Road (for either cars or bicycles). The road is closed to vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians when snow removal operations are underway.

If all goes as planned TPR will be open in less than a month. Of course we give the job of rope gun to Mother Nature on that call.
As mentioned, this is Tioga Pass Resort's 100th BIRTHDAY, come celebrate with us. Lynnie arrives on 5/24 (Lord willing and the creek and snow level don't rise.) and so looking forward to seeing and playing with wonderful ST friends as well as family, friends and climbers at large.
Big Cheers!!!
